Let me start by saying this is one of my favorite places in Tampere, so if you're visiting Finland,…read moreplease do yourself a favor and go. This was our weekly hotspot while we lived in Tampere. Jack the Rooster is a Rock bar which has live music most days of the week. On Sundays (Jam Night) they have a house band which offers a really unique experience. You get the opportunity to request the songs that the band plays, but you also get to be part of the band. For example, you can request a song and then replace the singer for the song you chose. This is really cool because you can replace as many or as few members of the band as you'd like. It's like kareoke for all musicians! You play drums, no problem, replace the drummer. You sing and your buddy place bass, cool, replace the bass player and the singer. It's really a cool idea and always a blast to watch. The musicians in the house band are extremely talented and there aren't many songs they can't nail. There is also a karaoke room in the bar, so no matter what else is going on, you can sing some karaoke any night! Go on a weeknight and you might even get the room to yourself for you and your friends. Now on to the food. The food is great, the burgers are amazing, but they've also got some unique things happening in this area too! First, the death burger. This is a food challenge, so you have to consume the entire burger on 30 mins without drinking any milk. This burger has about half a bottle of Ahjo hot sauce in the burger and even more on top, and trust me, that stuff is HOT! In addition, you have to finish the fries which are sprinkled with naga chili spice. Jack the Rooster also hosts a special dinner night called Hell's night twice yearly which features an original recipe spiced up menu. You can pick your item based on the skull rating, 2 skulls is moderate and 5 skulls will have you on fire. I had the Russian roulette. This meal was 5 meatballs with mashed potatoes... but here's the catch, only on of those meatballs was a 5 skull naga chili meatball. I hit that meatball second and it was so hot I felt like I was on drugs. I had to down pints of milk to bring me back to reality. :) On Monday nights in the summer they host a really cool event, Reggaeta & Makkaraa (Reggae and Sausage). They have live reggae music and free sausages fresh from teh grill! Yes, that's right, free! Might I add, this terrace gets sun alllll day and allll evening. Finnish summer days are long, it barely gets dark before it gets light again.

The huge windows are great for letting the light in. The lamps are just to my liking. The drinking glasses are the ones every trendy restaurant in Scandinavia seems have bought. The counter with all the cakes, pastries etc is beautifully organised. Every detail seems to have been designed and the overall ambience of the place is classy with eye candy for the visitor. I first visited there in June thinking I'd buy a cheap lunch since I came during lunch time. The salad was maybe 11€ and with chicken added around 13€ so I considered it a bit pricey for lunch hour. It did come with bread which was fresh from their own bakery so I did not leave hungry. And the salad was very tasty and if it wasn't for the price I could eat something like that every day. :) I also came here once for coffee with baby strollers and there's plenty of room for that. So even though the coffee is not the cheapest in town, this is a good meeting place even with the "baby baggage". Did I mention the regular coffee has free refills? It does. And you get one Fazer candy with the coffee. I of course picked the Kiss-Kiss candy which is my ultimate childhoold favorite! :) In addition to coffee, salads and pastries, you can buy fresh bread here for taking home. So in addition to being a cafe, it is sort of a Fazer pastry shop ("konditorio") too.

Came here for the sauna but not dinner…read more There are two co-ed sauna rooms, they are definitely on the hotter side compared to other saunas I've been too. I love how you get a lovely view of the city from the window as you sweat. The scenery at night is quite beautiful. The changing area has spacious lockers and nice showers. I wish they have a spinner for drying the swimsuit. In between sauna, if you like, there's a lounge area next to the restaurant, where you can relax with a drink. In warmer weather the outside seating area is great too. There's a small pool where you can go for a refreshing dip. I went in April and, with some encouragement and tips from a local, I managed to do two super fast polar dips in the pool, on a snowy night. Yes, it was insane, but the rush of adrenaline was addictive, lol. (Tip: go into the pool backwards, so you can just kneel down into the water, and get out of the freezing water quick!!) Bring your own swimsuit and sandals, though they do offer rentals if you need them. Also, it's less expensive if you visit earlier in the day.

For lunch they offer a 10 euro special that includes a salad that you make yourself followed by an entree. Today it was beef cheek. It was so tender. Yum! Your lunch also includes coffee or tea. They also have a bar so feel free to order a glass of wine while you dine. They offer an array of pastries as well. Most importantly, 10 additional euros gives you access to the sauna that also overlooks the river. I'm impressed. Make sure you visit for lunch with your towel and bathing suit as this is a mixed gender sauna.
