The most important thing first:  Mutt & Jeff's is the somewhat official restaurant of Vidor High School. Now for the disclosure:  I am not a graduate of Vidor High School.  My hunny is. M&J's was next door to Vidor High for years (the Orange street location), we drove by it on the way to my inlaws' house.  It was closed for a time, the old building was demolished, then it reopened halfway through 2012 in this location.  Bigger space. If you prefer a locally-owned business, you can't get more local than M&J's.  It's so local, probably everyone working there has lived in Vidor for years.  They live and breathe Pirates and bleed black & gold.  It's the sort of place that gets packed after the game.  If you're from out of the state and you want to get a true local experience, this is the place to go. I first went here shortly after they opened here, and it's gotten so much better since then. And it really wasn't bad then. Now there is more food for sale, and the menu is found on TV monitors located above the cashier. Prices went up a little, but you get what you pay for. The girl is now a Pirate, so we were obligated to introduce her to Mutt & Jeff's. We all had burgers, and she saw first-hand, this is no McDonald's. The food is much better, the atmosphere is fun and potentially rowdy, and she even signed her name on the wall. She loved it. Go ahead, drive south of I-10 across the railroad tracks to Mutt & Jeff's, sit a spell, and get goooood grub. read more

This local restaurant is located less than a mile off of the interstate and is a counter service restaurant serving a varied menu. It seemed to me that the specialize in burgers so that's what I ordered. I asked for the Mutt burger with a 1/2 lb. patty and seasoned fries. With a soft drink and tax my cost was $11.43. The meal arrived in about less than 15 minutes. The burger was solidly build with that half pound patty and dressed with lettuce, tomato, pickle, etc. I enjoyed it and thought it was a 3.5. The fries were seasoned with cajun dust and were hot but they were also standard frozen out of a bag type (3). Overall I gave th3 meal a 3.5 but will round down to a 3 for Yelp purposes. Nice family owned business. Pretty varied menu for a smaller restaurant. I ordered the house salad which was large and had a ton of fresh vegetables and fixings. The tortilla soup was also tasty. My husband ordered the Mutt burger and I was really impressed how good it tasted. The patty tastes like it was grinded in house and the bun was really delicious. Convenient location, excellent service, delicious food, and reasonably priced. All of the qualities of a great location. The big salad w/shaved steak had a variety of greens, tomatoes, onion, and egg. I'm so glad this place is right down the street from a bunch of motels in Vidor. There's not a ton of healthy food options in the area but mutt & Jeff's caters to the salad crew as well as the big burger crew. The fries here are amazing. Thick cut and crispy I dream about those babies. I got the big chicken sandwich with grilled chicken instead of the fried option. It came on a bed of greens that weren't just iceberg lettuce! My digestive system cried out with joy! Complete with plenty of croutons, grape tomatoes, cucumber, melted cheese, and onion. All the sandwiches everyone else at the table ordered looked big thick and amazing too. They're closed on Saturday for sure but I'll definitely be coming back. read more

Come for the food, leave because of the terrible service. Food was better than average for a fast food place. The service was really sucked. The child at the register seemed annoyed that I didn't understand the slang she was using. The back of the house staff were visibly arguing amongst themselves. Mutt & Jeff's ... the indoor restaurant ... say whaaaaat? Oh my goodness, this was a surprise as my sister and I were driving through our old stomping ground to see what Vidor looked like after moving away over 20 years ago. We remember this place as a quick service (walk up and take away) food joint next to the high school where the "cool" kids would get their lunch. We were delighted to see that Mutt & Jeff's was bigger and better than ever ... and as we still consider ourselves "cool", it was imperative that we relive our high school days and stop in. Upon entering, I really liked the place. Its fun with lots of booths, tin walls and everything "Black and Gold" ... after all, it is "mean and bold." We walked up to the counter to look at some menus and were happy to see that Frito Pie was still on the menu, the old fashioned style, (ripping a snack size bag open and pouring the chili in!) This was tempting but age has dictated that perhaps that wouldn't be the best choice for our old lady stomachs. However, it was lovely to see that it was an option. Instead, I opted for the Southwestern chicken salad and my sister treated herself of a shrimp po'boy. Upon paying at the register, I did notice an old Vidor Junior High band photo and actually recognized myself in it... ba ha ha ha, that was a lovely surprise ... also a shock as I cannot believe I walked around with the hair style in the 80's. Geesh! After a good laugh at my expense, we found a booth and planted ourselves in it until a server brought our food. The food did take a little while but it was okay as we weren't in a rush. Also, the food was worth the wait. We both enjoyed our selections very much. My sister LOVED her po'boy and as someone trying to watch their waistline, my salad was pretty darn good too, I didn't even use dressing! So, overall, this was a fantastic experience due to the friendly service of the staff, the flavor of our food and the nostalgia of this place for us ... LOVE. IT. When visiting again, I will definitely be stopping by. I might even drag my other sister along for the ride! read more
