Unless you're 11 years old, or the parent of an 11 year old, the chances are pretty good that Colonial Music (aka Music & Arts Center) isn't for you. Colonial is the kind of shop that is aimed directly at parents of kids who want to play guitar or violin instead of signing up for marching band and playing trumpet. They can come here, get a cheap, reliable instrument and receive lessons. It's a no-brainer for most busy parents. Guitar Center and Sam Ash, with their long-haired shredders, are nightmares for many parents. They're much more comfortable dropping their little Brayden or Madison off at Colonial. I'm a grown man without kids, so I'll likely stick with Guitar Center. But I'll keep Colonial in mind.

To branch out and try to learn a few things with instruments that I have never played. One of those such instruments is the drums. And I am starting relatively from scratch, I've never played drums in my life. I already had found a vintage Ken 1602 wood/rubber practice drum pad that I remembered friends using in the past. It's great. Picked up some sticks online, but Columbus Precussion has a huge selection too if you need some. So, all I was looking for at this point was an instructional book to start me along the way of learning rudiments of rhythms, how to hold sticks properly, and some other basic skills. Things that I can work on on my own as a self-starter musician project. I found just what I needed and more at this great store. It is well-stocked with full drum kits, snares, and other specialty drums. They also have other handheld percussion instruments. Plenty of general drumming supplies, including the instructional books I needed. Once I told the friendly & knowledgeable staff what I was looking for, they were able to narrow down my choices to a couple that suited my needs. They specialize in drums and related supplies, appears to be staffed with actual drummer musicians, so they can really focus on just those needs. It was a great shopping experience.

I chose a Martin OM-42. It is one of Martin's finest guitars. I wanted to get a professional setup done on this beautiful guitar. I am new in Ohio, having moved here just a year and a half ago. I did not do my homework as I should have, and I brought it to a repairman who did a bad job on it. I could see that he had replaced the nut for some reason and now the strings weren't lining up properly. I thought about bringing it back but I was just sick over it and didn't want him to touch it again, so it just sat in the case for months. Finally I'd had enough. I wanted my guitar back. I did do some homework this time and came across JThomasDavisGuitarMaker. I was hesitant to ask him to even look at another man's bad work. I know Tom is semi-retired from doing any repair work at all. I almost begged him I said there would be no hurry at all. He said he would repair it. And he did. He installed the proper Martin nut. (He told me he had a lot of trouble getting the other one out. The man had used too much glue and made a mess of it.) Besides Tom's expert repair work, I received the guitar like new and setup beautifully. Tom, this is the Martin I dreamed of having as my ultimate guitar. I can't thank you enough and I only wish you happiness in your future work. I'm very appreciative that you chose my guitar as your repair business is slowing down. Good luck and God bless you. He talked me into a passive piezo pickup (uses crystals to convert vibration to electricity and no battery), which I haven't been that happy with because of the high impedance, low output signal it generates, but that is not his fault. I knew what i was getting into. What is worthy of remarking on is how pleasant Mr. Davis' demeanor was and the neatness and precision of the work he executed on my guitar. He is indeed a very skilled luthier who has built guitars for major performers like Leo Kottke. And the price of the work he did for me was reasonable considering the care he took. Maybe someday I'll be able to afford to contract with him to build me a guitar.
