OPEN LETTER RE COST OF FOOT XRAY RSFH…read more I wanted to warn everyone about an experience that I recently had at the Roper St Francis Healthcare system. After seeing a local doctor, I went to get an x-ray of my right foot. I had a written order in hand when I got to the St Francis branch in west ashley. After checking in, I was told to sit down. After some time, before the X-ray was done, I was called to see another lady who wanted more information. This was to determine whether I would be authorized to get an x-ray. I was told by this young lady that my co-pay for a simple x-ray of the right foot would be more than $118. I have a comprehensive Medicare Advantage plan that has minimal co-pays. When I questioned the amount of the charge, I was told that the full charge for a simple x-ray of the right foot would be $769, with my portion being more than $118. ........... I found this astounding! When I asked why this was so much, I was told that there was an extra hospital fee added to the Xray charge. This was despite me simply walking in from the parking lot and not using any other Hospital service. I was flabbergasted.....I asked the lady to double-check to make sure that was correct and she called one of the supervisors who confirmed the amount of the charge. Because I had been able to ambulate for a few days despite a likely broken bone in my foot , I declined the X-ray because I thought the charge was extortionate. I was fortunate in being able to seek an x-ray somewhere else, but I expect that the hospital applies this same process to everyone, many of whom are unable to decline. The next day, I called two different locations, and was quoted a cash price without insurance, ranging from $75 to $99. This was the total cost including the Radiologists charge. I understand that our medical system is now run by business and insurance people with the help of the government. The clinical people that work in the Hospitals and Clinics have little to no say so. When I think of our Medical system in the United States, the words shameful and obscene come to mind.

We were given strong reassurance that certain conditions were not present, only to discover immediately after birth that one of those exact conditions was, in fact, present. Communication during follow-up screenings was also confusing. Important findings were shared casually and without context. We were moved through additional monitoring without clear explanation of what was being evaluated, what the risks were, or why certain decisions were being made. The experience felt checklist-driven rather than patient-centered. After delivery, the lack of coordination and condition-specific knowledge became more concerning. We received confident assurances about feeding and care approaches that later proved unrealistic given our child's medical needs. Some staff were clearly trying their best, but others spoke with certainty about issues they did not fully understand. Our newborn was handled and examined at times without meaningful explanation or discussion. For a family navigating unexpected medical complexity, that lack of clarity adds unnecessary stress. There were also smaller but telling process issues. For example, the hospital seemed unprepared to accommodate a vegetarian diet. Food orders were repeatedly incorrect despite clear communication about dietary preferences. While this may seem minor compared to medical care, it reflects broader coordination and communication gaps that were noticeable throughout our stay. That said, I want to clearly recognize the caregivers who made a meaningful difference. Emma, Lauren, Melisa, Susana, Suzi, Emily, Holly, Riley, and Jenn were compassionate, patient, and professional during an incredibly vulnerable time for our family. They treated us with dignity, listened to our concerns, and approached our baby with gentleness and care. Their empathy and steadiness did not go unnoticed. Kerstin, the occupational therapist who worked with us on feeding challenges, was exceptional. She was knowledgeable, calm, and deeply invested in helping us navigate a complex situation. She listened carefully, adjusted her approach thoughtfully, and demonstrated humility and genuine curiosity. That mindset made a profound difference in our experience and reflects what patient-centered care should look like. What ultimately left a lasting impression was not a lack of technology or medical capability, but what felt like a systemic process issue. Too often, the experience felt driven by routine protocols rather than individualized listening and critical thinking. When hospitals rely heavily on standardized workflows without tailoring them to patient concerns, families can feel unheard and underserved. There are clearly compassionate professionals working here, and several of them had a very positive impact on us. However, the broader communication and coordination gaps significantly affected our trust. I hope this feedback is received constructively and used to improve transparency, individualized care, and condition-specific preparedness for future families navigating high-risk pregnancies and unexpected diagnoses.

Dr. Williamson at E.C. Ob delivered my twins and she was such a God send. There were some unexpected developments in the pregnancy and I really feel like I could not have gotten through it without her and the rest of my care team at the hospital. They were all so kind and empathetic, they really went above and beyond. Which is why when we found out we were having another (happy surprise ) we literally moved to be seen here again. Obviously God had opened up other opportunities as well but the pregnancy and having good care was a huge propelling factor in our move and decision to come back to Charleston. My second experience was also fantastic. Not as exciting, more routine but I still got to have Dr. Williamson and everything was wonderful again. I just feel so cared for with them and I wish I could have had these experiences with all of my deliveries. Could not sing their praises enough, and I will always recommend them. I always opt for the early morning appointments to knock it out before having to be to work. They have great hours to accommodate patients. This facility gets you in and out promptly. His staff is friendly, compassionate, and will go the extra mile to assist you with all of your needs and concerns. After my visit to the emergency room, I made an appointment to see Dr. Johanesmeyer. He saw my X-Rays and we discussed his plan of action has including Ankle repair surgery, fitting me with splints, boots, and physical therapy. I have been prescribed pain medication to hold me over until the surgery. He did advice that due to my multiple broken bones, i will experience arthritis. 3/29 @ 6am I underwent Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) is a type of surgery used to stabilize and heal a broken bones. In my case, I had 6 plus broken bones. 2 weeks later I had my post-op appointment. X-rays were taken and I waited for the doctor. Upon removal of my cast and bandages We discovered extensive swelling along with monstrous looking fracture blisters. I was in total shock. Dr. Johanesmeyer Explained to me what fracture blisters were and how to treat them. He also Explained the Titanium hardware in my foot ( I nearly fainted). He went over the process of the surgery along with the incisions he made around the fracture blisters and why. My stitches are neat, and the incisions were all in straight lines. I must say he did a wonderful job. Dr.Johanesmeyer advised me to return in a week to see if the swelling goes down enough to remove the stitches and fit me for a stabilizing boot. He also provided me with pain medication and Gabapentin for my burning, tingling, ice picks, and cold nerve pain. 1.) Office Staff : 5 2.) Location: 5 3.) Before scheduling, I was told my records needed to be reviewed first, which I understood and sent over. I initially misspelled the email address but corrected it shortly after. During my follow-up phone call with Stacey, I was trying to better understand why I was being referred elsewhere instead of scheduling directly for imaging. Unfortunately, the conversation became unnecessarily tense and dismissive. I felt spoken to in a passive-aggressive and condescending manner while asking questions about the process. I understand medical offices are busy and stressful environments, but professionalism and patience matter, especially when patients are already confused or dealing with health concerns. People make mistakes, ask questions, and need clarification. The way staff communicate can greatly impact someone's experience. I hope the practice takes patient communication seriously moving forward, because no patient should leave a call feeling belittled for trying to understand their care process.
