They showed up at her house late in the evening (~8:30 or so), uninvited and unexpected. They told her that they were sent to clear her driveway. Only after they had shoveled it did they tell her that she owed them more than $1000. They didn't even shovel the whole driveway. Should she have asked about the cost beforehand? Yes, of course. But she's very elderly, and didn't think to. In past storms, neighbors have come to shovel her drive without being asked and refused to take any payment. She was afraid not to pay them, because no one else was there at the time and there were two big, young guys demanding money. When we called GWF, I was getting a little concerned myself because the estimate was rescheduled a few times but I'm glad I stuck it out and based on the work I would not hesitate to call them again. The quote was reasonable - a little more than our lowest quote but a few hundred beneath the highest. We signed their contract on the spot though because I felt Gordon honest and upfront over the phone with me and in-person with my husband. They were also able to accommodate our needs and actually took the tree down sooner than we expected. Another company told me it would take at least 4 hours of work and his crew had it down and cleaned up in two. Aside from a missing tree and some scattered wood chips, you really would never know they had been in the yard. I'll actually probably be calling them this fall for some tree trimming.
