Oh boy, I have been very excitedly looking forward to writing this review. I've known what I've been wanting to do, and it's obvious that Murphy is one of the most well-known brands in this space. I first tried to reach out to a customer using the Murphy scheduling portal. My appointment was confirmed, but no one was actually there - twice. Honestly, sounded like an awesome thought, but how many people would be available for free or have the product that I was looking for? I still had questions, so I emailed. They respond - fast, and they're friendly, and helpful, and all of the good attributes. I ended up getting a free book lock (c'mon, this is why we have hidden doors, right?) which I wanted to buy anyway, so worth it. Also was a little bothered by the price tag, and after talking, it was decided that the unfinished door was the way to go - for lots of reasons (ease of shipping, ease of staining, etc). I almost immediately got a call from my Concierge - which was a nice touch. I figured that the exorbitant price tag may be worth it for this type of service. She confirmed everything, made sure I had her contact info, and then before I knew it, the parts arrived - literally within ~2 weeks. It still took me another 10ish days to stain the pieces before assembly - and then still another 2 weeks to start installing in the opening. And that's when things started to go downhill. The gap between the top of the jamb top and wall opening is off by 3". I measure my jamb, it's 79" - mind you, this is for an 82" RO. No problem, right? I'll just call my concierge - oh wait, she doesn't answer. I'll text, she responded like that last time, right? NO, STILL NO ANSWER. Ok, so I'll call customer service - no problem, get a response, they tell me what's up, we're good. Next problem, the instructions DO NOT MATCH the pre-drilled holes for the hinges, nor do the instructions show which hinge is correct. The instructions say to put the silver hinge on the bottom, which is the smaller one. Ok, so I'll try my concierge again. Guess what? NO ANSWER. Great, do some online research. Found some random homemade video online and it directly contradicted the official instructions. Then found some MurphyDoor videos online that confirmed this random video was correct. Turns out, it was the correct move. Oh and a funny tidbit - the instructions...they were 3d rendered. How do I know? Things are oddly placed - if the lines were present, it would be logical, but they're just floating there, appears that they're mounted ...off. They're not. Next problem, some parts, like the Narrow Friction Door Catch, were different. Did the instructions indicate anything? NOPE! Got creative and things worked out. Now it's time for the book latch. It's super cheap pressed wood that doesn't stand firmly, nor does it have the designs that the instructions adamantly state are on the book. Instead, it's just a solid blue box with some painted "pages." The book doesn't open like the instructions state, it's just a box. Additionally, it would have been nice to not install the standard friction door catch stopper on the threshold. The book latch stopper (per the instructions) was supposed to line up exactly with the holes I drilled. Of course they didn't, I mean, right? More new holes! Fortunately, the fresh, now unused ones, were covered. Many of the holes weren't routed/drilled out completely, so I had to spend some extra time cleaning them up. I didn't have a huge issue with this; it was moderately cathartic with the other issues I experienced. The front casing was an easy installation, but nothing in the instructions or any videos online, or really anywhere talked about the back casing. I did some thorough testing for gap checking and had to neatly cut the corner of the bottom of the vertical casing to get it to fit over the threshold. Hope this was the right thing to do, no idea! I reached out on Murphy Door's Subreddit to complain (I thought into the abyss), but Murphy actually responded. Apologized for the issues, admitted to having an updated process, but not updating the instructions, apologized for the concierge, etc. Said it'll be fixed in the future. What good does that do me though? My door is installed - I have already paid full price. None of this is good for me. Now, I know this sounds like a super negative review, and the reason it's not 5 stars is because of the above, but overall, it IS a good product. The wood is solid and the hinges are mature and look like they'll hold a pretty significant amount of weight. It's very good looking and I'm VERY excited to show it off. Just make SURE to get a brad nailer. It's my first time with one, and I'm very happy with it. Totally required for the casing installation. Ultimately, if my concierge was available, This would have been a 4 or 5 star review, but flying blind at this price and the lack of QA makes this product a travesty. read more

I ordered a door on February 6th. I paid $349 shipping and after the fact I received a call to say that it would be dropped curbside. I am in a condo and curbside isn't an option as my unit faces the greenbelt not the street. I requested that it be left my garage instead as that is easily accessible from the street. I was told that would be an additional $250. A $600 shipping fee on an $1,100 door is ridiculous! After 2 weeks of texts and calls they were unable to offer a solution and cancelled my order. Absolutely the worst customer service. I was originally quoted in in writing a 2 to 3-week delivery time frame. It turns out that was just lip service from a salesperson trying to make a sale because once it went into production I was told it would be six plus weeks. Even after showing proof of what the prior representative told me they did nothing except tell me that if I paid $600 I could get that delivery window. Once I finally received my bookshelf there was some damage, albeit not minor. Been a simple fix if the touch up paint bottle they sent had not leaked everywhere and I had some touch up paint left. I purchased a custom order at the end of January and the custom bookcase doors arrived mid March completely wrong. It was very difficult to get a hold of anybody from Murphy door and 69 days later I'm still left without the correct doors. The customer service has been the worst I've ever experienced. The sheer lack of care is evident. It takes weeks for me to get a response from anybody via email and nobody ever answers the phone or returns my voicemails. I am still waiting for answers and a resolution to their mistake. Be very aware if you are ordering anything remotely "custom". read more

This has been an awful experience that has been very expensive and exhausting for a door. I was told by sales Andrew that normal delivery is 3 to 5 weeks but if I paid $600 I could cut that in half and get a " rush status " on door and receive by 12/19. I started reaching out to customer service a week after placing the order because I had no confirmation on delivery date or that door was even in production. After speaking with Valerie , Nick , Elijah , Andrew in sales and customer service I was finally able to speak with Tim, head of customer service. Tim guaranteed me a refund for $600 and an expected delivery the next day. This was on 12/18. on 12/19 I never heard from him. I still have no refund and no expectations for delivery on this expensive door. After calling several times I was finally told if they sent in a "request " for my $600 rush back it would slow it down even more. This makes no sense as both the rush period as well as the usual 3 to 5 week period have passed, not to mention that shows poor communication between the service , sales and production at Murphy Door . I don't wish this type of experience on anyone. Nick who just spoke to me was literally raising his voice at me that nothing is guaranteed. Do not make the same mistake I did. I don't think the company is fraudulent but their incompetence is not too dissimilar. I bought a queen Murphy bed with one side cabinet. Damaged parts, missing parts, and phantom parts have all been part of the experience. I've asked the company for a link to provide a review on their website and two weeks later they can't figure out how to do that. Below is the summary I provided of all the issues I encountered. Incorrect Instructions Step 5 involves attaching bottom side trim pieces. I raised to your team that I was never provided bottom side trim pieces. After two weeks of back and forth I was told that my model didn't include trim, since it has a cabinet on one side. First, why wouldn't I have trim for the side that doesn't have a cabinet? Second, and more importantly, why would you provide instructions for a different product? If my product doesn't have this piece the instructions shouldn't mention this step, or at least flag that it isn't applicable if you have a cabinet on either side. This error in instructions also arises in steps 22 and 23, causing confusion. Quality Control Issues Step 10 involves connecting the headboard to the center brace. The center brace is not flush with the headboard and has a bow to it. Additionally, the predrilled holes for the headboard do not align with the holes in the center brace. This required me damaging the headboard to widen/move the holes. I also had to use commercial grade clamps to rectify the fact that the headboard and center brace could not sit flush. Missing Parts Step 27 involves attaching the magnetic catch. These were never included with my product and you had to ship them separately, delaying my setup. Missing / Incorrect Parts Step 30 involves attaching the handles to the bed. The screws provided were not long enough. At this point I saw no reason to work with your company anymore and went to the store to buy the correct screws and all other parts needed from here forward. All additional items below that were missing were paid for personally. For your benefit, the screws would have likely been long enough if I didn't have the model that included shaker trim, as that added 0.75" depth. Missing Parts Step 31 involves securing the bed to the wall and studs. You did not include the necessary lag screws. Missing Parts Step 32 involves securing the brackets to the bed with the small black screws. I did not receive enough of these screws. Missing Parts Step 33 involves securing the top cap with 1 1/4" screws. I didn't receive any screws that were this Phantom Parts The instructions depict a part known as "Bed Stops." I received these but at no point did the instructions tell me what to do with them. Inadequate Instructions Steps 38-42 involve attaching the top, bottom, shelf and drawer stretchers to the side panels. After completing these steps I noticed that only one side of the shelf and deck panel is finished. Unfortunately I didn't have the finished side facing forward and had to take it apart and redo these steps. If you are only going to finish one side, it should be noted in the instructions to have this side facing forward. Missing Parts Step 45 involves attaching the back using 1 1/4 truss head screws. These were not provided. The bed is already installed so I am unable to take pictures of the backside of the shelf with my own screws Missing Parts / Quality Control / Incorrect Instructions Step 46 involves attaching the cabinet to the bed using 1 1/4" screws. I never received these screws. Missing Parts Step 47 involves attaching the cabinet top cap. Same as step 33, I did not receive these screws. Quality Control Step 53 and 54 involve attaching the drawers using premarked holes. My drawers do not fit meaning that the premarked holes are not aligned. Missing / Incorrect Parts As noted in step 30, I did not receive adequately long screws to secure handles to the drawers and cabinet door. I bought my own machines screws. Missing Parts I did not receive any shelf pins or cabinet bumpers. You can see my own shelf pins and no bumpers. read more

Terrible customer service. Purchased a bookcase door and after waiting 4 weeks it arrived damaged. I immediately took pictures and sent them over. Customer service reverted that they can either send me $200 or they can send a door carcass but that will take another 4 weeks. I told them that my contractor can fix it but he quoted me $350. Murphy Door stated under their terms and conditions they use a one standard rate and will not pay per contractor's rate. So pretty much what they are saying is if their item arrives damaged. The customer still has to pay more out of their pocket to pay a contractor to either fix the damages or to have it replaced with a replacement. Don't waste your time and money. Find a local cabinet maker to build. We custom ordered a black bookcase door. First off, the cabinet doors came scratched up so they offered to send new ones. Ok, then as we were hanging the door we realized they had everything backwards and they told me to not use the clips that came with the molding and to glue or nail it on. As the new cabinet doors finally came we realized they were bigger than the old scratched up ones and they won't fit on the door. I have been working with customer service for months and they are not fixxing my issues. Never again. We are ready to burn it and order from elsewhere. Spent way to much time on this. We liked our Murphy door/bookself although the system often needs adjustment and we have to remove the door from the frame to make it work properly. I ordered a Murphy bed with side bookshelves in November, they finally sent it in late February and the shipper wouldn't deliver it. After several phone calls with the shipper and Murphy, we were informed the shipper refused to deliver and it was going back to Murphy. It was damaged and now they expect us to wait another 3 months before it is shippped again! We already moved everything in the room the bed would go into so I've asked to cancel. we purchased a Murphy book case door in unfinished white oak. it turns out the door is not made of solid oak, but MDF with oak veneer. the website has done everything to obscure this fact and requires you to click into the technical specs to get this information. If they were being honest, it should say something like white oak veneer or white ok finish. It does not! even the receipt says "wood type: white oak" rather than mentioning anything about MDF or veneer. Why does this matter, you ask? when trying to stain the door, the veneer had some weird reaction with the MDF where the exposed MDF part of the shelf touched the back of the book case. it gave the back of the book case unsightly streaks along the exact lines the shelves had been touching (shelves were removed and stained separately). we have tons of experience staining oak doors, and this has never happened with any of our existing solid or veneer oak doors. Overall ridiculously pricey for what it is, which I guess is why they work so hard to mislead customers into thinking they sell a solid wood door. read more

I ordered two outswing double bookcase doors and the directions are not clear on how the middle bracket resting bolt sits since it fits into the turning bearing as well which is not where it goes. When I tried to go online to verify, since I did not want finish the installation and do something incorrectly, the directions or videos for some reason they could not be reached. Murphy doors might want to consider making their directions on this issue a little more explicit. When I finally did connect with a Murphy Door expert she was great. She verified the info, explained in detail how the brackets work and how the resting pin sits and why. She should be the instructor in the video! Her explanations were perfect. read more

After 2 anxious days (like a kid at Christmas), I reached out to to Customer Service to see the status of my order. We are getting 2 doors from them, they have been wonderful with all the information. On a total different project, I had some questions about MDF and knew I had learned recently some further information about MDF, and I wasn't sure where, but I had seen a quality video about MDF somewhere. Even the professional contractors said this was the cheapest built yet most expensive door they have ever installed. It is made from a super low quality mdf and thinly glued veneer that cannot withstand the brush of a hand or a towel before breaking. Multiple the problem by 100 if you have any humidity in the air. The entire unit began to sag within 2 months of install. Their customer service is non-existent, and I've even filed a BBB complaint for improper and inaccurate advertising. read more

Winner of the worst purchasing experience award for our entire home renovation project. We purchased a shoe rack door and found that the actual delivery timeline was more than twice what was quoted in their "estimate" at the time of purchase (the downstream impact of their delays cost us more than the door itself!). Try to get in touch with customer service and be prepared for even more delays and endless excuses like "estimates aren't guarantees." - yes but they they should set a reasonable expectation, right? Wrong. They offer an alternative to pay for expedited production but seems like a nasty way to squeeze customers since they rush surcharge only means they meet the standard delivery estimate they provide. Or even better... the price listed on the website is lower than what they quote over the phone/email. "Oh, oops I guess we need to update that.". It almost seems like a joke. Once you actually receive the product, don't be surprised at the poor quality of construction. Neat idea but very poorly executed. It seems like this business is run out of someone's garage as a hobby. I've never dealt with a company at this high of a price point with such poor customer service and quality. Ordered a build yourself Murphy Door, sizes did not match what was given online so door wont work for me and im out $2k+ I called the help number and talked to several agents. After the Second one I got her to admit that the website measurement i was given was wrong. She apologized and said they (Murphy door) should the website. Thats great but im still out $$ and you guys did nothing to try and make it right. 5- 1/4 door says 3/4" Protrusion on website its actually like closer to 3 inches!! I waited a long time for my murphy door and have installers here now to put it in and it is missing two key pieces...they sent two of the wrong parts. I am on hold with their customer service team right now and it is going on 30 minutes I have been on hold! This is the most frustrating experience that I have had in a long time. On top of this...my installers say the instructions are very vague and not very helpful. If you are going to charge almost $3,000 for a special order door and make people wait almost a month to receive it...you need to make sure the parts are all in the shipment. A really excellent custom made storage door. My laundry room had no storage space so I ordered a Murphy Door with 3 shelves up top and cabinet doors on the bottom. It is perfect to organize my laundry supplies and household hardware type stuff. The fact that it is a door is a huge bonus. Nothing falls off the shelves when I open the door. It swings smoothly and easily. There is a ball and socket that keeps it closed and I got the optional lock bar kit as well to secure the room beyond. I got the paint grade version and white paint option. It is flawless. So now all the supplies that were laying on top of the washer and dryer have a place in the laundry room door. It is one of the best things I did for my house to make it more organized and less cluttered. Having a hidden room beyond the door for my plumbing and mechanics tools was just icing on the cake and the optional key lock bar setup keeps them more secure. Nobody is going to pull on the Murphy Door anyway if they don't know what it is. But even if they do, they lock keeps it from moving at all and you will second guess that it is anything other than a built in set of shelves. It was a lot of money. But when you figure it is custom made, fulfills the function of a door and a cabinet, and disguises an entire room in the house; it is a really great value. I am glad I did this. read more

The product arrived in perfect condition, the videos and manual were invaluable, as was the information my contractor received when he called the company for some further guidance. He had never installed a Murphy Door and now feels like a pro! Everyone who sees the door at first has no idea what it is. They just assume we needed some extra storage in the modestly sized bathroom. But when we open it into the adjacent kitchenette they are truly surprised and comment on how they have never seen but wish they had one. In short, the door is perfect. World class customer service! The door itself was delivered in perfect condition, but there was an error in my order and I received the wrong jamb size. Carrie was very quick to identify their error and provide options for correcting the mistake. In this case, the only viable solution was for them to simply send a new replacement door. Obviously, getting the correct door the first time would've been ideal, but mistakes happen. Murphy (Carrie) did not hesitate to own the mistake and ensure that the order was corrected; Even if it meant they ate the cost of another door. I bought two doors for 3600 each with drawers for two children's rooms. I will never forget this day. The materials used are low-grade sawdust, which break very easily even from their own weight and for this reason all connections and door hinges sag, there is nothing left to tighten and strengthen with new screws. The drawers at the bottom have the cheapest guides that do not have any special rigidity, and since the door is on ONE and weak hinge, they also sag and have a slight tilt downward and often open on their own, and when they open, if you close the door a little faster or it will slam and the drawer opens, you will not be able to open the door and leave the room until someone closes the drawer for you. (From personal experience, my wife sat in the closet for 2 hours while I washed her car.) For this money, the door should be made of solid wood wood and high-quality steel hinges. I highly recommend thinking 10 times. read more

Constructed of MDF, worse than IKEA furniture. Customer service sucks and does not stand by their product. Door is way to heavy and warps under its own weight and their install tips will only get you so far. Bought their best door and am very disappointed. Could have built my own with hard wood, for half the price. Complete garbage, buy at your own peril. read more
