I have driven by this place many times but did not realize they had a small restaurant because it is very small and tucked well back on the property. They proprietor Marie was superbly friendly - the place is quite quiet and secluded - there was one other customer while I was there. I ordered the Oysters and the Hot (Butter) Lobster Roll - the oysters were super fresh and delicious and the Lobster roll was all big chunks of lobster and the best I've had in New York! Absolutely perfect! This place is clearly all about the quality and freshness of the food - it's not the place you'd go for a date but it is certainly one of the best quiet eating spots here! We bought the French board for 2 which had lobster salad, scallops, shrimp, asparagus, tomatoes, arugula, seaweed salad, and sweet potato fries. All made fresh and stayed fresh until we made it home 2 hours later because they gave us an ice pack to keep the container chilled. The setting is not for everyone but the food was top notch. This place is the definition of a hidden gem. Their primary business is as a supplier to restaurants and stores, so you will be surrounded by the sights and smells of farmed sea creatures. If this bothers you, by all means go away! If, rather, you want the best goddamn lobster roll on the eastern seaboard, kind, generous people who will take the time to share their culinary secrets, or a bag or two full of spectacular oysters or clams, this is the place for you. We stopped by to purchase oysters and scallops. I thought we made a mistake as the dirt road led us to a graveyard of old trucks and vans. It looked like an abandoned junk yard. It took over 20 minutes to receive shucked oysters and scallops. We were the only customers on a cold winter day. Once in our car, the bag of seafood smelled........... Rule #1 Fresh seafood doesn't smell. The oysters were not shucked masterfully, they were hacked. Unable to use for my original purpose. Scallops smelled horrendous, I tossed them. It is with love and dread that I approach this review. I love this place. I am in love with this place. If you do not love this place... the problem is you, and not this place. Lobsters and steamers with corn on the cob and fresh bread respectively, are served in giant e-z foil turkey roasting pans. No bibs. Eat on picnic tables. Bring your own wine, wine glasses, even hors d'oeuvres if you please. It's really a picnic, close to the water, without sand in your food. My grand-mother who has eaten countless lobsters in her days, and who introduced me to the sport of lobster eating, exclaimed this was the sweetest lobster she had ever had. Which is no small praise coming from her. I personally could not sop up enough of the steamers' juices with the warm bread. And the fried clam bellies and strips were also excellent. I only wish we had brought more prosecco. Next time. But there are only a handful of picnic tables. And a vibe as calm and laid back as the summer breeze. This is like no other place in the Hamptons. Fresh seafood, amazing views and you can't get more authentic than this. Come here if you want a super rustic experience, and don't be surprised--you're in the right place. This is a working fish farm and you sit outside at picnic tables right by the water. All the fish is super fresh, and the lobster roll is especially amazing. When my girlfriend and I arrived, they had just pulled the fresh baked brioches they use for the lobster rolls out of the oven. Don't miss it. The steamers are a classic, the corn salad and key lime pie are delicious. BYOB, and bring your own wine glasses if you don't want plastic cups. The Fish Farm is an authentic throwback to when the lifeblood of the East End was commercial fishing. Every place out here tries to replicate a tiny part of this vibe, but this is the real deal. The Fish Farm is perplexing. People don't really know how to rate it on yelp because it really isn't a place that you can sum up easily on this rating scale. What I love about it: The quirky location and nice view. The random animals being raised on site- geese, chickens, fish. The terrific food- lobster, lobster roll, and the amazing steamers (if you go here, get an order of the steamers, huge portion, rich and fantastic) What I don't like: The bugs! Because you are sitting outdoors, at picnic tables, you are often attacked by flies- even with the provided bug spray. We saw many people grabbing their food to go recently, so that may be a good idea to avoid some of the negatives. The creature comforts you expect at a regular restaurant are missing, but the food is terrific, the people are nice, and the experience is unique. read more

Great tuna! Quirky place u need to see. The opposite of fancy. A nice relief from the crowds and froofy Montauk restaurants. It's Just a counter you order at and a few picnic tables by the horshoe crab pool and big fish tanks. It's run by a couple of marine biologists who raise fish (sea bass ...) in big tanks and have some sea pens as well. Kids had fun watching the horseshoe crabs. Excellent fresh oysters and lobster rolls. Also really good mini key lime pies. They also sell fresh fish (and live fish to other restaurants I think), goose eggs from their geese and some produce etc. They also have a bunch of take home / take out options. Definetly worth checking out and getting some fish from. Also it's a good business to support as they do a lot of good work for sustainable fisheries. read more

I used to come here all the time when visiting Amagansett years ago. I visited after 5+ years and am super disappointed. I say don't bother. The owners have changed., so has the service and ambiance. It was never a destination spot, they used to have a litter of barking dogs, and lots of unpaved roads and no parking, but you get to pick your own lobster at a great price. Now its just a dirty place that charges the same as Gosman's for a 2Lb lobster. The difference with Gosman's is that you are not going to get bit by flies and mosquitos and eat surrounded by dirt and garbage. Horrible! I want to give it 1 star but the lobsters were so gorgeous so ... take them live to go I guess. read more

The lobster roll sandwhich is one of the best you will ever have in montauk. It's lemony, just the right amount of mayo and of course lump lobster chunks. The French woman who runs the place is so incredibly nice and everything tastes so fresh. Word of advice, do not let the environment fool you, this place is also a fish farm and upon first appearance it looks very sketchy and smells bad because of all the various animals but just try the food and you will not be disappointed. read more

This is just the coolest place. When you drive up you'll wonder if you're in the right place - you might say it's a bit weathered. But they have really great seafood at extremely reasonable prices and they're very lovely people. I picked up a load of oysters, a decent bag of scallops and some fresh as it could be striped bass and it cost no more than half what it would have cost me in Brooklyn. I was there off season and it wasn't so open - a bunch of stuff was closed that I guess is available in summer - but I'd go there at least weekly if I were living nearby. Sorry i havent had the time to write a long descriptive review so im gonna try to catch up by writing a generic-ish review for a few places, i been traveling so i have tried some great spots thanks to my secret way of reading other fellow reviews. sorry but i do want to give back without getting swamped so here we go. that being said what can i say about this fishery, weeds growing all over, oyster farms, no more sidewalk, bathrooms i didnt catch any but at the very end was some sun faded picnic tables where we nervously ordered a storm of seafood and the first of it came, fresh clams with that salty sweet fresh taste of ocean and the bounciest shrimp coctail was all it too to make us believers! thank you lobster roll (they were closed tuedsays) and thank you crab shack for having a ridiculous no service dog policy so our 4 pound new yorkie would have to sit in the "window open just enough" so she cant escape her misery we were happily forced to head here and we thank you forever. we came back from southampton the next day to get more stuff, everything was delicious and well prepped, we miss you guys! see you again soon! read more

This was hands-down the highlight of my recent Montauk trip. We were having a flight in front of Montauk Brewing Company's tasting room and the guy across from us noticed our room key and turned out to be the food and beverage director for Ruschmeyer's. After talking a bit about restaurants in Brooklyn, we asked him for some legit recommendations and this was hands down the one. He warned us that it was out of the way and a bit rough, but that made us want it even more. A quick glance at the polarized yelp reviews ensured our trip. When you first pull up, you think you're in the wrong place. It's not a tourist trap like the ones on the way. It's a working fish farm that also breeds dogs, geese and chickens. There's a big chalk menu where you order your bounty, and pass the fish tanks and a makeshift pen filled with geese is a little roped off area with picnic tables and umbrellas with a view that turns magic as the sun goes down. We ordered the smoked marlin paté, the french box, and the much-hyped swordfish chili. The chili was kind of boring, so we quickly pushed it aside. The smoked marlin pate came out with little slices of french bread, arugula and cherry tomatoes and is pretty much crack. I'm determined to try and recreate it myself. As we delighted in our rich, smoky sea-goodness the chef brought out our French Box, which was neither French nor in a box. It was a giant wooden plate covered with a seafood and vegetable bounty that made us wide-eyed and giddy. It looked like it came out of Edible magazine, not from a seafood shanty. Spread amongst a bed of arugula and tomatoes were for large bbq prawns, asparagus, lobster salad, chilled shrimp, perfectly seared scallops, fingerling potatoes and fresh watermelon. The Pate and box was a bounty for two, ordering the chili and the perfectly refreshing lime tart were just plain dumb. We slowly digested and sipped the beers we brought as the sun went down, the perfect end to a perfect mid-week escape. For those who are afraid of life and are taking it out on this gem: IT'S A GODDAMN FISH FARM. A real, working farm that grows the food you eat, not a bottle-service white linen date-rape room where asshats try and be interesting before they're drunk enough to bang each other. I'm sorry your douchehampton-issued white pants clashed with the animals and the food-centric vibe. You'd be better off doing another Ritalin bump and getting your anus bleached. I hear P-Diddy's having a white party somewhere, and you're clearly as white as they come. read more

If you spot the big osprey nest on top of the telephone pole along Cranberry Road, then you're headed in the right direction. The birds guard the dirt path leading to the Fish Farm, a ramshackle compound of fish breeding pools, wandering ducks, random dogs and, of course, the Sea Slug Lounge, perched perfectly overlooking Napeague Sound. This is close to the extreme east end of Long Island, where the coast and the sound are located only miles apart, and where the landscape looks like a tundra with ponds and windswept trees and few signs of development. I took my jaded friend from Alaska here one time and he was impressed with not only the food but also the atmosphere and the scenery. And that's saying a lot, coming from a guy who hangs in the bush often. At the Fish Farm, there is fresh fish available at a tiny country store as well as made-to-order entrees such as the French Box (a seafood "medley" of scallops, prawns, lobster and vegies; Clam Bake (with corn, potatoes, mussels, steamers) and the Napeague Surf N Turf (6 oz filet mignon with grilled jumbo prawns). The Sea Slug Lounge doesn't have a liquor license, but leave the girls a tip in the jar and you might get lucky (wink, wink, nudge, nudge). And talk about a place with a view. So, just head out to Amagansett, then make a turn north instead of south toward the nice beaches. Look for Cranberry Road and the big osprey nest. Perhaps the bird is eating some fish, recently caught in its powerful talons. You've made it. read more

The food court is finally open for the season! My wife and I enjoyed a delicious fresh cod served with asparagus and side of thin sliced potatoes. The non-dominating butter/lemon sauce perfectly complemented this dish without adding any heaviness to it. Fresh food doesn't get any better than that! If you value farm to table atmosphere- you will love the ambiance too; how often can you see a disco ball, painted stone, rustic art, wooden tables and naked girl riding a shrimp poster all in one place! read more

So I see that I'm an outlier here ... but I can't let myself be influenced by other people's love of this decrepit establishment. I will say that the food was good - a solid 3 stars for the lobster roll. But having to consume it next to the smell of all those poorly-kept animals made the experience unpleasant. In short, the place reeks. Maybe it was just the breeze on the day I was there? The geese and ducks are kept in small, dirty pens so imagine my surprise when the waitress told us that the fowl were "only for show" and that the owners are "animal lovers." There's also a filthy pool of water with horseshoe crabs in it. Ick. To be fair - this may just be what it looks and smells like to have a menagerie - but I would prefer not to eat a $25 sandwich next to it. It didn't help that they overcharged us by $100 for our meal and it took them a long time to fix it on their credit card machine. We we're here in September, there were no bugs. We sat at the picnic tables on a beautiful September day. The oysters were by far the freshest I have ever had, I think they were probably just plucked from the water before we got there. The food was FRESH and cooked well and we will go back. Looks are deceiving. We have brought in lobsters from there in the past, but this year, we had the "fish farm" prepare a poached salmon platter for 12 people for our Fourth of July party. The fish was cooked perfectly and the platter was beautifully prepared. So glad we chose them and we will continue to support them in the future. read more

If you live for chic and places to see and be seen, go elsewhere. But if you enjoy a totally different experience of having a catered picnic-type experience with fresh seafood, with unbelievable views, then read on. After walking past pens of geese and gander, and past a bunch of cats and huge outdoor fish tanks you order from a doorway in a house on the right. Ten of us ordered many items including the steamed lobsters, swordfish chili, lobster rolls, salad with goat cheese, crab soup, and enjoyed it all with beers we brought with us. It was an hour before sunset, and the tables they have available, (I believe there are eight large tables) all have a fantastic view of the sunset along the bay beach. No music, just the sound of the bay breeze, shells crunching, soup being slurped, and laughter. Since we were going to be a big party we called ahead and Mary faxed us a menu so we could give them a head's up before arriving. We did not do that, and there was still no problem. They were very gracious and charming, the food was great (especially the Swordfish chili !) Just in case there is no breeze, bring some mosquito repellant and wear long pants. read more

This is on the other spectrum of the Hamptons' scene: quaint, smelly, and featuring basic amenities (BYOB on picnic tables). The special of the day when I last visited, striped bass and prawn kebabs were fresh and perfectly cooked. Fried clam bellies were a little sad looking, the strips were a tad overfried (though not particularly crispy), the bellies mushy, and for some reason the bodies arrived separated, not whole. Bluepoints were good, the same as you'd get in any bar. Service was friendly and attentive. I'd return just to try out the other stuff on the menu. read more

Fish Farm is unique and delicious, that's all you really need to know. I'm one star short because I haven't fully reconciled how I feel about feral cats eating fish right next to where I'm chowing face on some seafood, but I will say - as long as they keep serving it up so fresh and tasty, it's a small detail I'm fine overlooking. Bugs, yes, they're annoying, but not unbearable. View is gorgeous, BYOB is tight, staff is colorful to say the least. The whole vibe is as a real as it gets - there's not an ounce of trying to be anything but their quirky, yummy selves here. I recommend the scallops, lobster bisque, and doughy roll that comes with. Please! You folks are nuts. This place could be great if.... They spent some money to clean up the place. It's a smelly, animal infested mess. They cleared the crappy fence and garbage and you could actually see Gardiners Bay. Take down all the brush, clean up the other side, and give me a view! They cooked the food long enough to be edible. my salmon was rare and my swordfish raw! They served quality and quantity enough to justify the prices! $3 an oyster and some were the size of a gum ball. They had any interest in caring about what they were serving or if you were happy. One women takes the order, delivers it and never follows up. They emptied the garbage cans from time to time. Flies everywhere, garbage cans coated with dirt and grime. With little to no overhead and so much potential they over promise, over charge and underperform! What a shame! Someone should drop some cash on this place and it would rock! Yes, this is an incredible place that is not to be missed. If you are confused about exacly what it is, be sure to check out Daniel's B's 14 pictures. That will give you a good idea. If you go during the day, go inside and see all the crazy fish and creatures in the tanks. Also check out what fish they are breading outside. Many of these are wild fish that will be released into the local waters. There may not be any place anywhere that has these kind of fish in captivity breeding. To help with any of the confusion... 1. The fish farm has morphed over the years into a off the beaten path; funky; un-hampton place to eat or grab take out or buy fresh fish, some local, some not. 2. It is NOT a 5 star restaurant. The food is good and they do their best with service. 3. The white geese, reproduce on their own, and are only penned during the busy part of the year as they can be nasty. 4. The dogs (someone referred to them as hunting dogs) are in fact NOT hunting dogs but they are the owner's personal pets, all of which are Champion Show Dogs or on their way to becoming a Champion Show Dog, they come to work with the owners during the day and go home with them at night to lounge about the house. 5. As far as the fish being farmed - most of it on the menu is NOT farmed as one reviewer mentioned. Much of it is in fact wild caught. Although they do farm fish on premisis, it is for releasing into the wild, they do not use the fish they farm for cooking. Also many of the fish you see in the tanks are wild caught and held in the tanks until they are sold, generally those fish (fluke & black fish) are sold live and are transported into NYC. 6. In case no one could tell, the fish farm is clearly not owned by millionaires, it is owned by a lovely couple who work their butts off everyday to keep the place open for business. Marie is a fabulous woman, highly intelligent and she runs the retail/wholesale business (fish market, restaurant orders, prepared foods, catering etc). I'm sure there are things she would love to change about the place, if she had the additional funds to make the changes, but the economy doesn't always allow us to do the things we would like to do but rather to spend the money on the necessary things. Her husband Bob, although he can be cranky he runs the fish farming section of the business and also purchasing live fish/lobsters from local fishemen. 7. Lastly I'd like to just say that yes, at times the FISH FARM has a smell, wether it be from the fish or the geese, yes it has dilapidated buildings, it can be grungy looking, but think about where you are, the beauty of the bay you're about to overlook, there are absolutely no other places like it around, so go to the fish farm with an open mind and no preconceived notions, BYOB & BYOBS (bring your own bug spray) and chill out with friends! :) read more

This place reminded us of "Deliverance"! Between the caged hunting dogs, the penned geese, the young man burning stinking garbage while staring off into space, the other 'employee' moving some hoses around while also staring off into space (maybe that is a requisite for working in such creepy conditions - being spaced), the whole place gave me the creeps and made it impossible to order food, especially with prices as high as Gosman's Dock! The Fish Farm at Amagansett owned and operated by Multi Aquaculture Systems is as special an experience as one could hope for when going to the eastern edge of the continent. The place, which is more of an ongoing event, can be found on the Cranberry Hole back road off Montauk Highway on the east end of town. Just go north and keep going until you see an a row of aging steel industrial buildings and an osprey nest. A carryout restaurant curiously called 'The Sea Slug Lounge' can be reached by parking and walking the short hardpacked driveway at the Fish Farm. It is a true, working farm, originally dedicated only to finfish, but now sporting Ushamwari ridgeback dogs, chickens, African and Emden geese, chickens, Philippine pheasants, regional feral cats, and 22 fish ponds containing blackfish, flounder, lobster, koi, striped bass, black fish, and other regional marine foodfish, including oysters and channeled whelks. The setting is rustic, to say the least. The farm property head ends at the edge of Napeague Bay, which arguably offers some of the most beautiful scenery of the eastern archipelago in the country. The carryout menu includes fresh, freshly prepared seafood comprising a number of dishes featuring the native fish and shellfish that are caught wild in the area or ranched, hatched or raised at the farm. You know it's fresh. You can taste it, as I have, including the spectacular swordfish chili (my favorite), and grilled, broiled, broiled battered or breaded versions of fish. Shellfish are also available. Scuttlebutt from the proprietors indicates they will soon be farming native shellfish a few thousand feet from the shore on a newly-acquired leased area in the Bay. They already are growing and selling striped bass they grow in net pens farther up Gardiners Bay to the north. As with all seafood in the area, you always know that you are eating something seasonal, when it is available, except for the ocean grown fish brought to shore for the winter. The home-grown striped bass have been fantastic the few times I've eaten them, which is probably due to their being grown in the ocean instead of completely in onshore facilities like most hybrid versions available in supermarkets. An eating area near the shore allows visitors a place to eat in the open, surrounded by wide vistas and an everpresent breeze. The overall ambiance is rustic, rural, marine, and real, with flavors to satisfy. Overall, the best place to eat on the East End, and to get food to bring home or to the hotel. One final note: BYOB if you need it. read more
