Clay working station

I had an amazing experience for my birthday at the end of July! Molly was my teacher she was knowledgeable and had dry humor that made the class funny and even more enjoyable. I just picked up my piece after the 6-8 week glazing period. I'll definitely be back I think it was worth the price fun for a girls night out or even a date night.

Unprofessional.

I took four stars off for a number of reasons. Let's start with the class. I went with my husband. I'm the crafty one between us, but that still didn't excuse the teacher to laugh at him every time he needed help. Rather than teach him, she'd just do it for him. A student is only as good as their teacher. The selection of what you can do in the class is minimal, which wasn't a big deal because they have plenty of glazes to make up for any lack of sculpting variety. The only star is for the glaze, which is unfortunately a crap shoot. While they can apparently fix those in house, they'd rather give you a product they messed up on. They got blue on the maroon and just left it? Only to find out that's actually something they could have fixed? But if all that wasn't enough, the owner is a drama queen--seriously, read her replies. This is not the type of place you want to go to if you want to avoid that.

Birthday creations, two pottery items
Danielle O.

For my birthday on 4/4, all I wanted was to have a relaxing and fun creative moment. My BF and I booked a pottery class midday @ 1pm. Thanks for offering that on a random Thursday & not a slammed weekend. While our tour & class was conducted by Molly,- skilled artist/teacher of 10 yrs...there were club members creating pottery. Just doing their own thing. Some with headphones on. No one was loud or rude. Lots of convos & instructions going on, but not too distracting. Maybe only up @ the front desk, but they're friendly and trying to help ppl in front of them & on the phone. I'm very proud of my creations & would consider a membership. You book online & reserve your spot for $20 online. You pay in full on the end of the appointment. At the end of the process you pick colors (84 options). The process is to dry out the clay & put in the kiln twice. After about 4-6 weeks you get an email to pick up your items. I'd do it again, for sure!

I took a class here through Airbnb! It was a super fun experience. Molly led us through the entire process and we made two difference pieces during the time together. You have complete creative control which is awesome if you know what you want to make, but can be challenging if you have no idea what to do! This is a great place if you live local, the pieces are ready within 6 weeks, if you live out of town they are able to ship the pieces your way. I recommend you stop by.

This was our first time trying our hand at the pottery wheel. The ladies at Mud Fire made it a super fun and laid back experience. They gave step by step instructions on how to make your pottery. You got to decide what two items you wanted to make. You also got to pick the color glaze. We will definitely be back.

This is an absolute JOY!! I've been wanting to go to a pottery class for quite some time. I found MudFire from a Yelp search and it came highly recommended. Signup was relatively easy. The take a $10 deposit, which is refundable as long as you cancel 24-48 hours ahead. You pay the remaining balance ($45 + optional tip) at the end. When you arrive, you check in at the desk and they'll guide you to the gallery. I waited about 10 minutes and our guide came back to start the tour. She showed us where everything is made and gave us an in depth explanation of the overall process. After the tour was the live demonstration and then hands on learning!!! This was my first time so I made a cup and a bowl. There were so many things we could have made!! After we made our pieces we got to choose the glaze!! There were so many options!! I was absolutely torn because I loved them all. I highly recommend MudFire!! I went alone but this would be a great girls night or date night. Your art takes 4-6 weeks before you can take it home. I'm sure my babies are in good hands!! Looking forward to the final results!

I took a class here while staying in the area and it was so much fun. I believe our instructor's name was Molly and she was so kind and helpful. Pottery is a lot harder than it looks and I loved every second of it- would definitely go again if I got the chance. We were able to make two pieces, choose the colors we wanted (and finish I think) and I got mine a few months later and while I struggled to make them look the best it's nice have something I worked on and didn't give up on

Natalie made sure it wasn't a cup like my plan- SMH

I decided to have a mother/daughter day with my adult daughter at Mud Fire a month or so ago. I didn't post due to the experience, we wanted to make sure our "art" didn't get lost or broken. What would have been a memorable day was anything but. We arrived early as it's minutes from my house, dressed appropriately ready to play with clay. Another couple, checked in after us as we waited, their bubbly instructor met them quickly. We,waited. Finally, 12 minutes after our start time our instructor met us, get name is Natalie, you want to remember that. As we started, unlike the other couple beside us who btw got 2 colors of clay our gal, well she cut out pieces quickly and rushed through the demo. We were both SOOOOO lost. Beyond lost, but willing to try. As we struggled, she offered zero encouragement to the point my daughter started paying attention to the other people. We asked for help and instead of "instructing" which is what you pay 100.00 for a 2 hour session is supposed to be. Instead, she huffed and puffed to the point we just wanted it to end. She would grab our pieces and just fix them. Umm, if I wanted someone else to do it I wouldn't have shown up. About 30 minutes before our session was to end she abruptly decided she was done, as was my daughter, and she LEFT us- seriously who does that? She also failed to explain the colors so we picked them out and then she said "oh, I should have told you, you can't use any of those" SMH vigorously at this point. Overall, the concept is a 4 get attitude and lack of character and instruction a zero, hence the 2. Shameful really that employees can kill a business concept for their patrons. Footnote, I had a tiny(tiny) hole in mine and instead of helping me fix it my cup she said would have to be a planter- horrible.

I took the 4 hour workshop which was mostly metal working. It was an amazing experience. Wendy is an awesome teacher and explained each step of the process thoroughly. She made herself available to the students and did a lot of one-on-one work. Although we all made the same project (a ring), Wendy made sure there were many opportunities to customize it. You determine the band size of your ring, decide to have a patterned or smooth band, whether or not to have a stone set in the ring, and the color and shape of the stone. I left Amalgam with a beautiful handmade and custom ring! The 10am class went until 2pm with many opportunities for snacks and bathroom breaks in between. The way the class works is Wendy explains each step as you go along and floats around the room to help people complete that step. For the complicated steps (i.e. Soldering), Wendy works with students one by one to ensure safety and correctness. When you're waiting for your turn or letting your ring sit in the "pickling solution" as Wendy calls it, you can relax and do whatever. I snacked (bring food or buy it at the cafe right outside), socialized, and studied for an upcoming exam I had; so, bring things to do or not - just a heads up. Remember to wear close toed shoes, and be ready for an easy, relaxing Saturday at Amalgam if you take the 4 hour workshop, which I highly recommend. It's a fabulous activity for mom/dad and daughter/son dates, a girl/guy's day, or plain ol' self care. Location and parking: The studio is situated in a grouping of buildings that kind of look like bungalows. When pulling into the lot, you won't immediately see Amalgam. You will see a small cafe and a storefront with a big letter "D" on it. Amalgam is between those about 100 ft farther back. There's a small parking lot so if you're going to a class, I would highly recommend showing up early to nab a spot.

The teacher is Wendy, who has an incredibly impressive resume in the metal arts. She is very patient and helpful as you go through the process (and believe me, it's a process, involving pliers, soldering, hammers and a dremel) to create a pretty ring. The class is a little long because it's a process. You can bring snacks and non-alcoholic drinks. Or you can walk to the aforementioned bakery if there's a lull in action (ask Wendy first). But it creates a really cool result! Mine is pictured here.

Just a Scottie here to represent. ;)…read more I adore Agnes Scott, and it has truly made me a very strong and capable woman. Yes, it's an all female college in Decatur GA- just a stones-throw from the city. But with all of the wonderful food, shopping, and (lets be honest) beauty, Agnes Scott is a sure thing. All of the professors at ASC have their PhD., and offer incredibly insightful, interpersonal, and unbiased teaching. I don't believe that I could have found a better support academic environment. ASC also has an extremely high rate of their pre-med being accepted into medical school, not to mention many graduates go on to graduate studies, or leave ASC with a job. Socially, it is the type of school where you need to be incredibly open minded. Yes, there are many outlets for the students to go party, meet people of the opposite sex, or not. I would say the most wonderful thing about Agnes Scott is the students respect for one another regardless of sexual and gender identity, religion, race, and background. We have an extremely diverse enrollment, and many clubs and associations for students to become involved in. We work hard here, but many of us also play hard. We do throw many social events, including a fall semester formal, and a spring semi-formal. Agnes Scott knows how to throw down. Sometimes on-campus guest are a little weary of what to expect... but every date I have brought on campus has has an awesome time. Being from a fairly small town only 75 mi. north of Atlanta, I didn't expect a lot of change from my conservative high school. Well, it did. I have become very well rounded, open-minded, accepting.. and driven to succeed. When I first came to Agnes, my class motto was "Take root...grow beyond." And I most certainly have.

I first learned about Atlanta Hot Glass through the Emory Alumni Association, as strange as that may sound. I'm an alum of Emory (in case the comment above didn't make it obvious) and when I received the latest newsletter about upcoming events and goings on, an event about an interactive glass blowing night caught my attention. Fast forward two weeks and my boyfriend and I showed up at Atlanta Hot Glass, owned by Emory alum Susan Chin, and were introduced to the fascinating world of glass blowing. Let me tell you, it's harder than it looks, but lucky for all of us (there were about 20 people there in all), the instructors were fantastic. In addition to helping us make our own blown glass ornaments, they showed us some awesome examples of what you can make once you've gotten more skilled at it. We learned how hot the glass has to be to be malleable (it's kept in a 2050 degree furnace), how hot the 'glory holes' are that melt the glass shards and color the glass (2200 degrees), how glass sculptures are molded and shaped and transferred to the oven to cool down, etc. It was incredible and eye-opening and really fun. I thoroughly enjoyed myself since everyone was so friendly and willing to answer questions and assist us. Susan's cousin was great because he explained to us what was happening as the instructors were demonstrating making different pieces and when I was making my own blown glass ornament, my instructor (whose name escapes me), talked me through each step and why we did it. Atlanta Hot Glass also offers classes, studio time and opens itself up to the public like it did for Emory that night, which is great. Even if you're not sure that's your thing, you can take a course or a couple individual classes to figure out if it might be. A big kudos to the Emory Alumni Association for organizing this event and to Susan for kindly opening her studio to us. It was a fantastic and unique way to spend a Thursday.

After visiting the website, I called and spoke with Susan. She was extremely helpful and gave me lots of information. I chose the "Hands on Experience" for nine people. The process for payment and scheduling was very smooth and professional. Upon arriving, our team was greeted by the instructors, Lee and Jeremy. We were given safety tips and general information about glass blowing. Then we jumped right in. We had a blast! We each created a glass piece (paperweights and ornaments) and had a true "hands-on experience". I highly suggest this activity to large groups and small! For large groups I suggest keeping the pieces simple to allow time for your entire group to have a chance.

But, instead it was a nightmare I literally hated to come in on those 2 days. Most of the staff had a great attitude towards me & was welcoming when I came in but then there was Maria. She tried to seem like she was so nice but she was so rude to me!!!!! She wouldn't even let me interact with the children in the "space" I was provided. Because she was so CONTROLLING & not sure for herself. The whole school knew that she ran multiple workers away from this daycare because of her controlling behavior. Ms. Jeanie told me don't let her run me away & honestly that kind of scared me because I was thinking like what did I get myself into! Catrina Knight let it all happen. She told me out of her mouth that she had to give Maria a year leave in the past because of this kind of behavior. Which is really unprofessional to tell a new employee. She tried to make me stay in a work environment where I didn't feel comfortable or welcomed. Her father Charles tried to give me this speech about how to overcome the disrespect basically. But, it didn't work for me at all. Then, don't get me started on how small & unsafe this place is for the children. During nap time all of the children in the whole daycare sleeps in the hallway that's so unsanitary & weird to me. And not to mention that she didn't pay me for those days I worked which was to be $19 a hour. So when I resigned a couple days after I reached out to her about the process of me to get paid. She ignored me because she was out of town living her best life. But then she replied she asked me for a mailing address for my check which she received. Then I waited a few more days to see if it would be in the mailbox but it wasn't so I reached out to her again. Then in her words she said "The check will be sent 30 days after your resignation date since we did not receive ample notice. The training check will be received by Aug. 4." So, I waited again at this point I'm being very patient with her. It's August 11th & still haven't received a check!!!!! She will not reply to me & it's very inconsiderate. But the moral of the story is don't work here or send your child here.

And not just because of the urban art and Erykah Badu playing in the background. It was more intimate, almost like having a private lesson. We chose our seats & picked our aprons. There was a canvas, paints and brushes already set up. I was skeptical about being able to paint such a complicated piece in two hours.
