Randomly found this place and decided to stop in. They have recently moved and while looking confused was redirected to their new location less than a block down the road. What makes this place unique is that they have beer and wine available for sale too. There is also an outdoor patio and it looks like they may have music in the evenings. The barista was super friendly and while enjoying my horchata hot brew noticed numerous regulars and such a friendly vibe by all employees. Honestly the friendly and sincere service really makes this coffee shop stand out. Wouldn't hesitate to stop in again soon. read more

The ice cream machine was down for a couple days but Marco and his staff where creative and made popsicles out of their oatly ice cream (vegan, dairy and gluten free) This is a great stop to get amazing coffee and good tasty snacks. read more

Mudd Works Roastery on Glisan in NE Portland is an absolute gem for coffee lovers! From the moment I first walked in, I knew someone had put a lot of care and passion into every aspect of this business. Indeed, the owner Marco really knows his stuff. He has a deep knowledge of coffee, roasting, and the intricacies of pulling a perfect shot for the many concoctions he prepares in his tiny shop. I think he truly loves the craft of coffee, and it shines through in every ounce of Mudd Works. Have you ever seen a vintage Sasa Samiac roaster? I certainly hadn't before meeting Marco. His roaster is the heart of Mudd Works - literally, right there in the center of the coffee shop. The aroma is extraordinary, creating a magical Charlie and the Chocolate Factory sense of anticipation. It's clear something special is being created in the space, and visitors are invited along for the full sensory experience. Feast your eyes upon, touch, smell and taste everything that is being created at the roastery. You'll quickly learn why Mudd Works has built a devoted following who come back time and time again for a perfect bag of beans, and a brew to go! I love my work because I get to witness firsthand the alchemy business owners use to transform vision into reality. I don't know if Mudd Works is exactly what Marco set out to create, but the business that has resulted is a delicate balance of art, creative expression, precision and years of experience. This coffee shop and roastery is something unique that resonates with me, and the rest of the customers who walk through the front door. Additional details: Mudd Works boasts a large parking lot, plus streetside parking. There are a few places to sit inside, but visitors will also find covered seating and tables on the sidewalk in front. The owner is very dog-friendly, with a fresh bowl of water and treats on hand for canine visitors. If a sample is offered, be sure to accept! This place is really, really small. When we visited there were probably 6 customers inside and with that few people, it felt claustrophobic. I could barely turn around and there was no place to sit unless we squeezed in with the strangers at a huge table taking up most of the teeny room. The barista was nice and wanted to know if we wanted to taste coffee before we selected it. I told her that we just needed medium roast coffees and I added a pastry. We sat outside at a table next to Glisan. It was chilly. The pastry wasn't great and the coffee was hair-on-your-chest strong. I can see and understand why people who like very strong coffee like this place and truthfully, the outdoor seating has it's own charm...but we won't be back. read more

Marco carefully selects the coffee he roasts on the premises. Over the many (many!) years I have gone to Mudd Works Roastery for coffee, he has shown his knowledge and skill for choosing a variety of wonderful coffees. He is friendly, kind and courteous. He makes an incredible horchata FROM SCRATCH! And the pastries from local bakeries are quite delicious. There are endless highly recommended coffee shops we've tried in Portland. Many have served up weak expensive coffee, which is so disappointing! Mudd Work has been a rare pleasure! I decided to try Mudd Works for beans, so I ordered a pound of French roast online. The local delivery option said it would take 40 - 50 mins for delivery. I thought it was just a fluke, or a mistake in the checkout process. I went back to work expecting the beans the next day. But nooooo 45 mins later my phone rang and there was a knock at my door and voila! Beans! Now that's service! Bonus I brewed up some French roast this morning and it is delightful. Great small coffee shop in Montavilla. The owner is very knowledgeable and kind. My favorite is the 'Pooh Bear.' A nice frothy oat milk latte with a hint of honey. However, he also offers an horchata cold brew if you're looking for super sweet. The hours are not consistent as the owner is having a tough time finding staff for his shop. You just can't miss with this place. The owner is spectacular and every time I go in I feel as though I am chatting with old friends. The drinks are delicious and well made. If you haven't had the oat milk horchata cold brew you are missing out! There coffee beans are delicious and the advice given to keep in my freezer before use really seals in flavor. 10/10! read more

The best coffee in Portland hands down. I know that's a bold claim in this city, but the owner here consistently brews excellent small batches of coffee from around the world. There's usually about eight different varieties to choose from. The espresso drinks here are also inventive and delicious. Buy a bag of coffee, select the cold brew with horchata as your free to-go drink, and thank me later. read more

First of all, the coffee is good. It's really cool to check out the roasting equipment (it's all visible) and simultaneously drink the product. The owner is a super rad dude who very clearly views his shop and clientele as a community, and is always playing around with new ideas to meet the needs of his customers. Street parking is available. It's a busy area but the shop is convenient for other errands in Sellwood. I probably wouldn't go out of my way based on this first experience, but I wouldn't hesitate to go back if a friend recommended that we meet there. Maybe the second time is the charm?
