The music is loud, the English is broken, the other guests seem like they're permanent fixtures, and the food, well, the food is great. My order is constantly the same for two people. - Two quesabirria tacos - One large plate of fruit (lime, Chamoy, Tajin) - A bottle of Mexican "agua mineral" - A michelada Seriously, I can't do this type of meal on a weekly basis but a few times a year brings me so much joy. I came in today for an order of carne asada fries and birria tacos, as I was waiting outside in the " patio " area one of the workers there a girl with a black hair in a braid and red lipstick came over trying to give me an order ( which was not ) mine, since I had placed mine a couple min before she came to me, I told her that was not my order she told me the items I said no not mine, she gives this look like she was mad for me not accepting this order, she goes back inside, the way she looked at me and the attitude she had was incredibly rude, I work as a waitress in a restaurant and this is not acceptable at all, her whole energy the way she looks at customers she looked like she had no idea what she was doing, me and my family are regular customers for more than 3 years! Ok! This place is the local dive bars dream! I see why it's open til 3am. As a result of late nite drinking, there is always late nite eating. Mucha Fruta serves so much more than fruit and so many more people than bar patrons. I came with my wife and son for an extra curricular school assignment to purchase and partake in a Raspado. This is akin to Hawaiian shave ice and a snow cone but the Spanish version. Assignment complete! However, we were all hungry and the menu included everything Mexican you could think of. The menu is so vast but everything we tried on an early Friday evening was so flavorful and distinct. I had two large carnitas tacos that a yelper recommended and it was legit. My wife had breakfast chilaquiles divorciados for dinner which I mopped up her uneaten portion. It was fire! My picky eater son had beef fajitas complete with salad, rice and beans on a separate plate from his sizzling marinated meat platter. I snagged a bite as he was so stuffed he could not eat another bite. It had mucho sabor (a lot of flavor). The place was very clean and the salsa bar very extensive and clean as well. The staff were super nice too but that food was the shining star! Five stars shining bright. So much better than anything you could order at an upscale Mexican restaurant for your dollar. WOW... rarely do I try new things that leave me speechless. After months of drooling over Birria taco tik toks, I finally had the opportunity to try some! These tacos are insanely delicious! One "taco" costs around ~ $4.50. I got 2 because I was pretty hungry but 1 wouldve been sufficient. They are bigger than normal tacos (see attached pictures). Inside is juicy shredded beef and cheese. The outside is crunchy and just perfect. We also ordered the soup to dip it in. Each plate comes with onions and cilantro, radish and pickled onions. Just put everything inside the taco you cant go wrong! We also ordered some aqua frescas. This spot is known for their fruit concoction and juices! The cucumber lime aqua fresca was amazing as well. I ordered 7 birria tacos w/ a side of consome and my total came out to $27 and some change. Mucha Fruta is pretty easy to find and see on University Ave. And for cozy, family establishments such as Mucha Fruta, the location gives you a better sense that the food will be god-damn-good. But for all intents and purposes I give their location a 3/5 because parking is pretty tough to come by and if you do find parking, it may be in the busy University Ave, the crazy narrow/steep parking lot, or tight residential streets. Food - 10/5 This of course balances the score out in my own subjective way and it's probably heavily influenced by my after-night-of-drinking cravings, but asi es la vida amirite? This sweet day I got one quesabirria (two tacos together like humancentipede and deep fried I think) and two birria tacos which this time around appeared to have a soft taco inside of a hard or deep fried taco. The meat to my understanding originates in a stew form (and can also be eaten as such). So when its put into these deep fried taco, you have this crunchy, savory, delicacy that is probably wildly bad for your arteries, but even better for yours oul (and hangover). These dishes come with onions, radishes, cilantro, and lime so make sure to please your momma and eat your vegetables. Overall - 5/5 Damn what a life I would've had if I grew near here for highschool. I grew in SD and never knew about this spot. For those fortunate to travel to central and south American countries, Mucha Fruta is a reminiscent of your best and accessible food experiences after a night out. I went to this establishment back towards the end of November and purchase the fruit salad a breakfast burrito and a drink. The fruit salad for the amount of money that I paid I felt like they really packed in the fruit it was really good I'm not really fond of papaya but I still ate it the best part of the fruit salad is the amount of cottage cheese that was placed on it which makes it so good and they are always really good at draining the milk from the cottage cheese before they put it on the fruit salad .the fruit salad was so big that they had to tape it closed but it still came open which was fine. you get a real bang for your buck at this place. anytime I need a really good fruit salad I always look for them first . You definitely will not be able to finish this in one sitting. I'm picky with my shrimp burritos and this one was tasty. It reminded me of the taco shop burritos from back in the day. Also the green salsa was perfect! I understand it gets busy but it didn't look busy to me for them to take a whole hour for 3 tacos.
