During my last class, the instructor and owner spent a significant portion of class time discussing…read morehis personal life -- specifically, a family situation involving his goddaughter's relationship -- rather than focusing on instruction. At one point he physically hit me with frustration about it, which felt inappropriate and uncomfortable. At the end of class, he made a comment about Valentine's Day that included language stereotyping single women. I calmly suggested he consider different wording. His response was defensive and loud -- he raised his voice in front of other students, repeatedly told me not to "accuse" him, and pointed to a pride flag on the wall as evidence of his character. I stayed calm throughout and clarified I wasn't accusing him of anything. The interaction ended without resolution. I left feeling shaken. We crossed paths several times afterward and he never acknowledged what happened. I found the experience to be unprofessional and, frankly, distressing -- particularly because I had chosen this class as a safe, welcoming space.

The quality of instruction was…read moreexcellent, the ratio of coaches to kids was more than I expected, Franco looks intimidating but he's just a teddy bear at heart who has a gift working with young children. He is able to command their respect while being kind, a knack for maintaining their attention, and has a keen intuitive sense of what kids' need -- when to encourage them, comfort them and when to back off. He knows every single child's name and has an amazing ability to run a fairly large class like a pro. He makes it fun by warming the kids up with "animal name" exercises such as crab. His dojo colleagues clearly have a lot of admiration for him and they seem like a tightknit family that work well together. These are just my first impressions. We look forward to enrolling. One item i wasnt fond of: The small studio layout has a column/partial wall in the middle of the space, which is obviously a structural detail that cannot be removed. I guess it has pros and cons. Pro is that it creates two areas when you want to work in a more separate space; con is that it creates two areas when you want to train in an an open space. This is a minor point, however, and certainly not a dealbreaker.

I didn't really feel comfortable, I was a slow learner because I haven't stepped into a gym nothing in over 2/3 years. They don't really follow up with you either. Or give you a remind notice to make sure you will show up. I kinda felt like it was.. like if u come, u come. If u don't, u don't. We signed up for the Tuesday class in Kits. The workout started with a fast pace warmup, then we went into a tutorial on proper techniques and form. Then we went into a full body workout session. I was hooked after the first class. Our instructor, Lydia, is amazing and one of the real reasons we come back (now our 5th month and new location). She is patient yet firm and thourough. If you can't do a move, she gives you another move that is easier, yet still hard. I've never sweated so much! I love it. My cardio has increased, my arms feel more toned, and I love the atmosphere! Classes are throughout the week and various locations! I definatley recommend trying this out!

Our middle son now has his black belt, achieved when he was 13 years old and our 11 year old daughter is aiming to achieve her black belt in the summer of 2017. We are thrilled with the program offered by Purple Dragon Kitsilano. Not only is it a physical work out for the students; the core beliefs and values that we as parents talk about with our kids, are also reinforced. The life skills are tenfold on many levels. As part of our involvement as a family with Purple Dragon, we travelled to Trinidad this last summer for our middle son's black belt testing with a team from the studio. What an amazing opportunity to be involved with such a positive experience. The life lessons our son learned from that one experience, along with the lessons learned over the past 7 years while participating at the studio have been outstanding. If you are thinking of beginning martial arts, certainly consider this studio, we highly recommend Purple Dragon Kitsilano.

I had trouble scheduling the first one as they don't take online reservation. I had to call, leave a message, and wait for a call back. But once in touch, Olivia was nice and helpful. Also, they charged me $19.99 initially but gave me the difference back when I saw their subsequent promotional price. I also got a pair of gloves for free! This is pretty cool. First class was with regular class but they give additional one on one coaching. Second class you join the rest of the group. I am terrible with cardio and core, so the beginning 15min cardio was too much for me. However, the kickboxing part was fun. They try to sell you packages on the first day, which they offer additional discount. I still find it too expensive for me who only wants to work out once a week. It's probably ok for others if you go multiple times a week. Overall the place is clean, people are friendly, but really depends if you like their style of kickboxing.

The space is great, plenty of room to move around and really get into your groove. There are classes 7 days a week, and a membership means you can go to as many as you want, without having to pre-book. I never know when I will get out of the office, so really appreciate the flexibility and timing of the classes.
