I went to the other day to pick up some buckets of soil. I had 13, 5 gallon buckets which is 65% of a half yard. They charged me per bucket, which equaled $39. I asked her how much half a yard was and she said $29. Then she says, I guess it's more expensive to do it that way ...as if it was my idea to charge me for more $ for less material. Yeah, it sure is more expensive when you decide to gouge me, intentionally. The only reason why they use a bucket increment is because they have don't have pricing for anything less than a half yard. So it makes sense when you're getting a couple buckets but when your getting enough buckets to exceed the cost of a half yard, yet the amount of material is only equal to 65% of a half yard, why would you charge me for $10 more than a half yard? I'm not using your guy to come lift the soil and put it in my vehicle. I'm getting it all myself. Why would you charge me 35% more for getting 36% less? This is no way to do business. I guess Mount Scott Fuel must be really hard up for money. Portland sand and gravel charged me a half yard when I was getting a bunch of buckets before because that's the right thing to do. It isn't right to make people pay for more than they are receiving, just because you can hide behind a pricing structure, that wasn't even intended for that purpose. Shame on you Mt. High quality bark mulch, with a wide variety of options. Mt Scott is the go-to place if you need mulch for your yard or garden. This is the second year we've used Mt Scott mulch on our parking strip and we're really happy with the results. We had no problems ordering a couple of yards earlier this spring, we were treated with respect, and the delivery was friendly and on time. We're not alone here since our first experience with Mt Scott mulch came two years ago courtesy of a neighbor, who had more mulch than they needed. They're regular Mt Scott customers. Why the wet wood? An eave (to the left of the front door) just isn't enough! Days later it's still wet so it had been rained on for awhile. The least expensive and usually great quality, perfect for my fireplace, is this wood, otherwise I would have bought some from the huge covered area across from it In the parking lot. The less expensive stuff to the left of the front door. I brought it up to the staff and was blown off, they could have warned me about how wet it was! Please get a cover! As a longstanding customer, my attractive order of bark dust from Mt. Scott Fuel Company in SE Portland arrived. As a recent widow, I placed blue tarps at the entry to my driveway. I showed the driver the space where I wanted the product placed. He suggested the tarps be placed back further to where I would start working while keeping the product within the neighborhood specifications. My product cannot invade the asphalt. That was a wonderful idea. Calmly, he offered to move the tarps for me. I was really impressed! Conveniently located in the adjacent neighborhood. I've always gotten good service and they have a huge selection of ground covers as well as soils. Even firewood. It is handy having an open bed truck to have a half or full yard, depending on the item's weight, to haul back home and unload. Otherwise, you'll have to rent a truck or borrow a friend's. Talk to them about bagging-your-own, an option for those who can't get a truck. Also talk to them about home delivery but there is a pretty large minimum order. Mt Scott Fuel is wonderful. We were recommended to order here from friends who just finished a huge backyard renovation, since we all have had weird amounts of time at home during quarantine. They told me that price quotes came in significantly less than from the other well known guys. We ordered the max amount of #10 gravel we could for one single delivery load, which is 10 yards. That delivery showed up at the beginning of our reserved time window and was done in a prompt and professional manner. Our backyard is two tiered and huge, it made no sense to have so much lawn. So once I dug out the grass with my trusty transfer shovel (quarantine stay fit plan), we had the gravel delivered. We used it as the base of our community area. The left side being the cooking, seated, hammock side. The backside being the play area for the kids. The right side being the garden side. Once we laid the landscape fabric down, we spread all of the gravel (SO MUCH GRAVEL) and got our 4x8 cedar raised beds installed. The 1/4 #10 gravel was perfect for our needs. It is a clean product with no fines. It doesn't compact down as much as the smaller gravel but it holds is shape more and will stay relatively solid over time. This morning we finally got 4 yards of 4-way gardening soil delivered. We had the same delivery guy, who is was friendly both times and professional. Again, arriving right at the beginning of the delivery time window (which was a much bigger window this time). 10 yards of #10 gravel and 4 yards of 4-way soil. I just chuckled at this number coincidence realization while writing this. The soil is made up of (1) topsoil (2) composted cow manure (3) bark compost (4)sand. The texture looked great, no huge chunks of wood or natural that'll mess with roots or be too heavy for seeds to sprout and push through. Most of my garden plants have been started indoors already and are hardening off outside. So I expect the transfer to go well. I'm hoping the seeds germinate well in this, too. Since I'm starting a little behind for the planting season. In terms of the service, they've been excellent. They emailed back promptly, the person over the phone was friendly when placing the official order, the delivery guy was friendly and on time. In regard to the claim that they were less than their competitors, true for us 100%. Their gravel bid came in over $200 less than 3 others I got from around Portland. Their soil bid came in just over $100 less. I also love that this company has been around since 1919. A few things I learned with my experience during this time. (1) Every where is slammed with deliveries due to people sprucing up and renovating the backyards they've been stuck in. So expect having to book out for your delivery date. Mt Scott Fuel did have a longer wait window, which was worth it for their prices. (2) You can add different material to the same delivery. (3) I tried to do this for my neighbor and her oversized river rock needs. However I learned that Mt Scott Fuel doesn't deliver their largest river rock size. So if you need that, go to Portland Rock like I did last year for my oversized river rock delivery. (4) Measure your space and figure out the depth you want. They have an online calculator specific to what material you want, so you can figure out how many yards you need. Super happy with my service and decision to order from here. Recommending to all of my friends and will use them once again, when we're ready to re-bark. read more

I rented a 4'x7' open top U-Haul trailer down the street, wheeled into Mt Scott for 1.5 yards of fine Hemlock. I think they gave me closer to 2 yards and I was in and out in about 15 minutes. Mt Scott Fuel completes my yard, front and back. Truthfully, my yard would be nothing but mud and weeds without Mt. Scott fuel company - because there's no way I am going to lug 4 to 6 bags of bark at a time from Lowe's in my car. This place sells by the truck load so I borrow my dad's truck and pay $35 for an entire yard full in one shot. Okay, not really. I have my dad bring me a yard full in his truck. I just help scoop it out with buckets and spread it in my yard. This is a no-frills business. You park, pay, pick out your barkdust, get back in your truck, pull forward and a forklift dumps a yard of bark dust in your truck bed. They do have different varieties of bark dust as well as a ton of different kinds of rock (ie river rock to red rock) for yard enhancement. I'd prefer to lay down bark than continually mow a yard, so having this business a mile down the road is a total gold mine! read more

Purchased a cord of wood and am extremely unhappy. The wood was very dirty. Full of mud and debris. We had four garbage cans full of debris to dispose of after stacking the wood. The wood is so wet that mildew is growing on the ceiling of our shed! And of course it's too wet to burn until next winter. They told us it was "seasoned ready to burn" for $400.00. I have previously been happy to support and talk up this local small business. This morning, however, I was chased down and verbally assaulted by one of their drivers. As I passed their driveway on Foster a truck appeared to be pulling out rapidly, directly into my lane. I honked and swerved to avoid collision. The truck driver then got behind me and leaned on his horn while he followed me. I turned onto 72nd as he continued to lean on his horn, in order to let him go by and get away from him. Instead, he parked his truck right next to me in the middle of the street, got out of his truck and approached my car while shaking his fist and yelling obscenities at me. He shouted that he was a professional driver and knew was he was doing and that I should "keep your f*#king horn to yourself". I shouted not to come near my car and he continued yelling. When he finally got back into his truck two people stopped and checked to make sure I was okay, that was how frightening it was. I called to report the driver to Mt Scott. I spoke with owner Clay Tyler, who was initially quite shocked and concerned and stated that the driver would no longer be working there by that afternoon. I gave my phone number and asked to be informed of the outcome. When he called me back he informed me that he had spoken to the driver and that the driver had given a different story, and that he, the owner, would not be imposing any consequences on the driver. I reiterated that his employee had followed me leaning on his horn and had gotten out of his vehicle screaming obscenities and that if there would not be consequences from his employer that I would file a police report. Mr. Tyler essentially told me to go ahead and do so and that he would not be taking any further action. A business is represented by its employees, for good or ill. What has been represented to me by the owner is that this is a business that protects men who threaten and harass women. There is no other way to look at this incident. And I cannot imagine that Mr Tyler would have been as comfortable letting it go if I were a woman who was part of his family. I will indeed be filing a police report, but it was also important to me to stand up and fight back against men who protect violent and aggressive men. I wanted people to know that Mt Scott Fuel is a company that allows its employees to behave in a manner that is reckless, dangerous and morally indefensible. read more

I really like the place but it seems like most of the bad reviews are around poor quality wood. That's too bad because its s simple business, supply customers with barks sand, rick, soil, wood. I think they should fix the wood issue and customers should know that if they are purchasing soil from a place like this, it probably isnt going to be organic filled with fabulous mychorhizae and all. Its basic stuff and cheap. I've had good results but I blend it with good fertilizers and some quality soil. Overall this place is solid but yes, improvements could be made, like stop selling garbage wood. read more

We recently ordered and received a "unit" of wood chips. I was told the driver would decide where the load would be dropped. When the driver arrived, he would not try to place the load where I wanted all the time complaining that he had "too much on his mind." I said I understood, but this location meant I moved many wheelbarrows hundreds of feet farther. One week later, a PGE lineman dumped a load of wood chips, at the location I wanted, being courteous, accommodating and polite. When I called Mt. Scott back to order another unit and report what happened, the person who answered, said the driver was the boss and it was up to him where he dumped the load. There are other places to get supplies. Do yourself a favor and take your business elsewhere where you might find more accommodating people both inside and outside the office. read more

I bought a "rack" of firewood from them two weeks ago and the wood does not burn... it essentially melts into soot. The wood I bought from Mt. Scott Fuels turned moldy within days in my garage... see the photos. It was wet and absolutely unseasoned. I've had other wood sit in my garage for over a year without getting moldy (I have a very dry garage). This is a six-year-old review, but stick around, please, because it's very relevant. Why, you ask, is it relevant all these years later? Well, because it is a review of garden soil, and we all know that gardening is a sloooooooow process. The results can take years. So, here we go. Six years ago, we bought a house and wanted to put in huge new garden beds because the house came with... none. Well, one, that was something like six feet square, and was all the way at the end of the backyard, sitting there in a tiny, huddled heap. It was a pathetic bed. Really, it was. So we laid out our new beds (cheater's hint: use flour to draw a line on the grass, so that you can see what the bed will look like before you make it). And we called Mt. Scott Fuel to order our garden soil, on the advice of our neighbors, who liked them. We ordered something like 7 yards of 4-way blend soil, which is a lot, especially when dumped at the base of one's driveway. Furious wheelbarrowing ensued. And soon we had glorious glorious beds. Then we ordered something like 5 yards of Medium Dark Fir mulch. Unlike hardware store mulch, this mulch stuck around for years and years. Even the mulch that we had piled for safekeeping into a pile called Mount Mulch was still good, years later when we needed it. We were really impressed. You will be, too. We were even more impressed with the 4-way blend soil. Everything planted in it grew to ridiculous heights. Everything that wasn't... struggled. It was extremely obvious that 4-way blend was a fantastic product. Even now, years later, the plants that are lucky enough to live in the Mount Scott soil look better than their native soil brethren. First of I want to say that everybody that I have talked to is really nice. Three weeks ago I had a cord of fire wood delivered to my home. I got the worst damn cord of wood I have ever . Every damn piece is coated in mud and dirt. The woods been stacked out of the rain for three weeks, and the wood is still wasaaayyyyyy too wet to burn. So for 300 bucks, I got a muddy, punky pile of wood that I really can't do anything with. read more
