We found Dean's by accident on Yelp when searching for rock/gravel on a Sunday afternoon. Dean's was the only place open that had exactly what we needed. Smaller lot but they have done an awesome job with presentation. They have a little lemonade stand that was not open at the time but I'm excited to check it out this spring/summer. This review is for the firewood delivery service. Recently I ordered one cord of firewood to be delivered between 10:15am- 12:30pm (see screen shot for the order). I even called couple of days ahead to make sure that everything is good with the order. On the day of the delivery, we were woken up by a loud noise at 6:30 AM--the delivery truck has dumped the wood in front of the garage. Both of our cars got stuck in the garage, and as a result my husband did not make to the drive to Seattle for a meeting and I did not make to work on time. This is all due to the lack of communication and irresponsible behavior of the company. I called the company several times without anyone answering during business hours, so I left a message. It's been a week and I have not heard anything from them. Apparently they do not care about small customers like us who want to support local business. This is the worst experience ever and I am very disappointed with this company. read more

While I appreciate the response from Dean Innovations, I am disappointed to see it is not entirely truthful and frankly, disingenuous. " It is interesting because all of the sample tests taken from DEANS of White Lightning came back negative for clopyralid" This is not the whole truth, isn't it? ;) It is like testing a different batch of lettuce for e-coli after an outbreak of it. Unless you tested the batch that you sold, which you didn't, of course it will be different. To come back and say it is negative is really disingenuous. There are MANY people who tested their compost from you and it has come back positive. You know this. That is my issue with your responses. You are in the CYA mode. Maybe your lawyers are advising you. A decent company would have issued a refund, apologize and cover the cost of removing the soil/compost. You know how expensive it is to dig up and then dispose of yards of dirt? Sure, you would have taken a financial hit which your insurance probably would have covered but instead you are not being truthful. Instead you went in to deny deny deny mode. Shameful. Also your wife and your friend write reviews here and other places as if they are legitimate. Come on. I think one of them finally got removed, but be a decent company and human being and do right by your clients when you screw up instead of giving them pennies to disappear and deny the issue actually existed. I could have understood your supplier screwed you over, but what I do not accept is your denial of an issue that many people are suffering and how you responded. I ordered a cubic yard of topsoil and what I got instead was a cubic yard-ish of solid clay. It has rendered the area of my back yard I was filling unusable. If you want to fill your yard with subsoil masquerading as topsoil that will practically turn into a lifeless rock in a month, you should definitely check these guys out. On the other hand, if you actually enjoy getting what you pay for *and* having a usable space on your property, maybe check out one of their competitors instead. I don't think it's possible that they could do worse. DO NOT BUY FROM HERE! I purchased white lightening in mid-May. Last week I top dressed my best performing tomato plant with white lightening. This week it is showing weird deformities consistent with herbicide damage, as are other tomatoes I planted directly in white lightening last week. I have talked to many neighbors who used this product who are having similar issues on a much larger scale. This is a nightmare. Find another place to get soil that isn't contaminated. read more

I have been buying from Deans for 8 years and this year is the last time. I ordered 4 yards of white lightening on March 30th. My plants started to show signs of pesticide damage 11 days after planting. The soil Is being collected by an agricultural investigator because of how many people reported signs of this damage. They are not organic they do not know where their manure comes from. They do not test or keep samples of their soil. They have not reached out to the hundreds possibly thousands of people they delivered and sold this soil to. At 70 a yard you better know what's in your damn soil. I'm so fussy and angry. I had to destroy my entire garden and dig it out. If your tomato plants are twisting abnormally or you are seeing anything strange I encourage you to report this information stop more people from buying this soil. They sold me compost tainted with herbicide. It was supposed to be organic. They were very unprofessional when I asked for a refund initially and avoided me for two whole weeks. I had to threaten to talk to the news station that was covering the contamination before they finally returned my calls. Killed my whole garden and lost about a thousand dollars worth of perennials that I had put into a new garden. Will never use this company again. read more

Very nice people who were quick to make recommendations etc. The issue is "Premium Hardwood Mix' was wet as hell and doesn't burn well at all. I have reverted to trying to dry it on my own which is a pain when I bought it to fuel my wood fired pizza oven and getting it started is incredibly difficult. I am at the point of when I do get it going I cook my pizzas and when the oven is down to a manageable temp (under 350 so it doesn't combust) 350 I am loading the oven with wood in an attempt to try and sort of "kiln dry' it on my own. I might try them again in the Spring and simply put a half cord on a pallet and dry it myself over the summer. Wood is expensive so this was a bit of a disappointing experience read more

I have been ordering firewood from Dean Innovations for 4 years now. I usually get the same 1/4 cord of wood because this is all I have room for. I stack in in the very same place every year. This year was odd, first they said the driver would be there between 7am & 10am. I had a doorbell ring before 6am. He delivered the wood and it was obvious that there was a substantial shortage, by about half. I contacted Dean Innovations and they were so quick to make it right and delivered the missing amount plus some. I searched around Craigslist for a few days looking for firewood to be delivered so I can enjoy some nice evenings by the fireplace with my wife in our new house. I saw what seemed like great deals, only to call and talk to shady characters. Then I stumbled upon an ad from an actual local business, Dean Innovations. Their prices are reasonable, although they do charge $50 to deliver a cord of wood. But you get what you pay for. The wood is dry as hell and the driver who dropped it off placed it exactly where I wanted it (without ruining the wooden fence right next to the drop spot). If you're looking for quality firewood, give Nigel at Dean Innovations a call. They're professional folk and have lots of types of firewood to choose from. Now then, go get yur wood... read more

Dean Innovations takes yard debris now. Don't go there. It is limited. I don't believe they should offer that with their terrible customer service. I walked into the office and didn't see anyone at the front desk. There was a young woman at the back desk. she ignored me and continued speaking on the phone. I decided to get the dumping out of the way and return to pay after. At wich point another older woman showed up and voiced her displeasure with what i had done. They charged me for 1.5 yards for a penalty. That is terrible customer service and i will make the longer drive to McFalrans where their operation is right. I am sure they know who this is and I Do not care. I want my $ back. However the white lightning soil is a great product. I used to spend plenty of money on quality product there. read more

We recently ordered 5 yards of White Lightning planting mix, eager to get it into our newly built raised beds and get planting. It's a busy time of year for them, so it did take about 2 weeks to get the delivery from time of my order & payment. Day of delivery, I called and found out that we'd been accidentally left off the list for that day - Robin was apologetic and did her best to get it to us later that day, but it had to move to the next morning. Without prompting, they refunded our delivery fee (thank you!!!). The driver kept social distancing as she checked where we wanted the soil dropped, and backed up the truck expertly into our driveway to a convenient location for us. The soil is high quality: plenty of organic matter, dark & rich. We found only about 4 tiny bits of plastic in the entire five yards (there's always some, when yard waste is mixed in). Looking forward to a great garden! Advice: do have your all your needs in mind when you place your order. I realized a few days later that I wanted to add in a few yards of mulch, but once you're scheduled (truck space reserved), you can't add other items to the order. read more

So more on the not calling for updates... A couple of days ago one of their trucks pulls up in front of our house and starts to unload bundles of firewood. I told them they must have the wrong address but they assured me the wood was indeed for me. They explained that they were giving me 6 bundles of Juniper since I did not get any Juniper in my blend. Um, awesome! Super stoked to finally get some Juniper in the house and thought it was really sweet of them to make the special delivery. Such a pleasant surprise. But still, it was a surprise. Do not buy soil from this place. I have been a customer for 7 years but no longer. My latest delivery of White Lightening soil that they advertise as being "great for organic gardening" was contaminated with herbicide (possibly more than one) and they refuse to remove and dispose it. They are not assuming any responsibility. This past spring, I had two yards of White Lightening delivered, dumped straight onto a brand new tarp. I distributed it throughout newly dug out beds and top-dressed a number of raised beds, perennial flower beds, a fruit tree, turned it into raised beds and established flowers beds, and added it to freshly dug holes from my blueberry bushes. My new crops started showing signs of herbicide damage shortly after planting. The Department of Agriculture took samples from a number of gardens that had also purchased this soil and tested it for herbicide - all tested positive. Deans received the test results as well and is still refusing to remove and dispose of the soil. They have yet to contact customers that ordered from them and those poor folks have no idea they are eating crops laced in herbicide. This particular herbicide is taken up by the root system and is in the actual plant tissue. On top of that, additional plants, including an established apple tree and formerly beautiful blueberry bush, started showing signs of another herbicide, and the ODA has since come to my home to test those plants as well. There may be multiple contaminants. Those individuals that were affected have lost all their spring/summer crops, and have essentially thrown away $$$ spent on seeds, amendments, starts, shrubs, trees etc. Some of us have lost established plants as well. The cost is so great it's not even measurable from some of us. As a community, we have all individually reached out to Deans since having made this discovery. Most of us received refunds. But I need the soil removed and disposed of properly, I cannot afford to pay the $1k plus to do it myself, nor do I feel it is my responsibility. They need to be held accountable. I'm heartbroken and saddened over the situation. It's truly awful that they haven't stepped up to help and support this community that has supported them for so long. So disappointing. If you know anyone that has ordered from them in the past few months, please warn them since Dean's won't do it themselves. read more

Ordered a cord of 2 year seasoned Juniper ($267). They were able to deliver the day after I ordered it. (Additional $50 for delivery to close-in SE Portland) The delivery driver was very nice and communicated clearly about where he could dump the wood. The wood itself was so dry that after we stacked it all, there was a huge amount of small pieces and bark that had come off the logs to use for kindling. Glad I didn't buy more than one bundle of kindling. I don't think we'll need it all Winter. I think the guys here err on the side of generosity because it looks like more than a cord to me. Good value for the money. I recommend the Juniper. It burns slowly enough that you don't have to throw logs on every half hour like softer wood, and it pops and crackles a lot. Also, order before November 1st if you can, because prices go up after that. read more

Dean Innovation arrived promptly with my order. Unfortunately, there was a misunderstanding. I have a garage but the driver said he would have to dump the wood in the shared access road and he could not dump in the garage or help me put it in the garage or deck due to back injury. I am a 63 year old woman who is not up to moving that much wood. The good news is that Samantha and Shaun at Dean Innovation say I will receive a refund in a few days. I will miss the wood but THANKS FOR SUCH A GREAT BUSINESS PRACTICE. I would highly recommend Dean Innovation but you must be able to stack and move own wood. read more

This was my first time buying from Dean. I had a 1/2 cord delivered and though the wood is good I'm guessing that approximately 1/5 of it was a mix of kindling/mulch. I put a yard debri bin full out at the street. They sold me a starter bundle which I gave away as there is so much kindling in this that I should've never bought that bundle. I already knew Dean's "White Lightening" soil was the best in town, but I didn't know that would also describe their Service! I kinda of "bocked"at the idea of paying extra for each type of soil delivery, but soon learned the value and reason behind it. Your second and third type of soil takes up the space for a complete new delivery. But that's beside the point. I borrowed a friends 2 yr old trailer. It drove nice. But when I got to Deans, Robert was concerned about the Bearings. The trailer seemed wobbly. He highly encouraged me to check it out at Les Schwab saying, "I just don't want you to have a very bad day". So I trotted, trailer in tow, to LS. They said they'd "seen worse" but were even more concerned about the tires. I opted to take both their advice, went back to buy bags of White Lightening and proceeded to order 8 yds of 1 step lower than White Lightening and a beautiful dark brown compost. When it delivered, I got White Lightening How nice! Back to my point. They probably DID prevent me from having "A Really Bad Day" or even saved my life and that of others!! My friends hubby (who probably didn't want his wife's friend to borrow it in the first place) was at first a little offended that I didn't use the trailer after borrowing it, but he shot down to Les Schwab, bought new tires and had his bearings packed. If Robert didn't save lives that day, he saved my friend's family's life, I'm sure. They planned on using it for soil the next day! Need I say more? Forever a Fan! And I'm going to have the best Flippin' Garden you've ever seen this year! I feel I should just add that they were out if the blend that I ordered, and upgraded me. I received a delivery of white lightening soil on 4/3/20 that was contaminated with clopyralid which is an herbicide banned in Washington state and heavily regulated in Oregon. I had to dump ALL of the soil and plants at peak season from my beds because I refuse to eat food with known herbicides in it. Though this could happen to any soil company based on poor farming / composting practices of the people they source from, here's what Dean's actually did wrong: They did not alert the customers who had been affected to this issue when they knew about it. Instead they sent a baited email asking "how people's gardens were doing" instead of owning the problem. It was only when I went on their website that I found out and even then they said it tested below threshold which according to other testing by consumers and the ODA is not accurate. Lastly, there testing / sourcing is clearly compromised. Though they did give me money back from the soil, they did not comp the delivery fee nor offer to help remediate, remove, or replace the soil and in fact refused my request. I found them online, prices were competitive though I had to do all the work. 1/4 cord mixed with a bundle of kindling just over a $100 and I stacked it in my car, then over the 6' fence at home and then restacked in the yard. Now, sitting with a beer infront of the fire waiting for dinner to finish. Wood was dry, lit relatively easiy (first time with this fireplace) and I'm happy. Enough said. read more

PREVIOUS REVIEW*********************** Ordered 1 cord of firewood - half Tamarack, half hardwood. The Good: Delivered on time, at the right address. A true "cord" of wood (no shortages) The Bad: The wood is fairly wet through and through. The Tamarack isn't as bad, but the hardwood is definitely not seasoned. One piece of hardwood still had bark and FERNS shooting out from it (yes, live, tiny plants growing in the supposedly "dry" hardwood). The Mediocre: I was a little disappointed that the driver didn't put a tarp on top of the pile, too, since I left it near the delivery point and asked for him to cover it due to the rain. I realize that was an "above and beyond" request. At the end of the day, I tried Dean Innovations in the hope that spending more money would mean a better quality product. Unfortunately, I would have been better off gambling with Craig's List. I see Dean reads these reviews - perhaps they'll make it right. read more
