In peak summer days the shore is lined with families, food trucks, kids on bikes, boaters, kayakers, and all other species of lake lovers. The waters of Maranacook Lake are clear, pristine, and brisk! The beach is easily walked to from downtown Winthrop, which is lined with cool shops, a subway, couple of eateries. The town beach is clean, nicely maintained, trash receptacles are available, lots of green space to picnic and chill. The boat launch is nearby as is a lovely park with benches and a community gazebo. On the 4th of July this is THE place to be! Amazing fireworks food trucks, and of course the Winthrop PD regularly patrols so you can take your leisure in a safe, monitored location. As a local I love using the beach in the off season. There's always tons of free parking and the Winthrop peeps are just great, kind, people who don't mind sharing their gem of a beach with out of towners who respect and abide the rules. While at the beach take a stroll, explore the neato downtown area, and soak up the sun and fun vibes! Bring the fam and chill on the shore of the beautiful Maranacook Lake. Oh! And boaters if you put in the lake check your boat and trailers for milfoil (a nasty invasive plant) it's the law in Maine. No milfoil in or out of our water bodies. Enjoy!

Very nice area to just relax, take in the view, enjoy the fresh breeze and kids can go for a swim…read more, fish etc.

Unfortunately this feels a lot less magical as the name "Hobbitland" might imply. It feels more Three Billy Goats Gruff. Am I being too particular? As a girl who grew up loving and still loves fairy tales I just want to make it clear that while this walk is great: a) there's nothing all that shire-y about it (more just familiar Maine woods-y), and b) the happily ever after happens at the beginning (what I mean by that: the stone bridges and dam are the first thing you come across, while the rest of the trails are just paths through the woods. Call me spoiled, but I've done plenty of walks and hikes that have some destination that make it worth the effort, does that make sense?). So should you do this? Yes! With Spring there's a thousand green shades, and Fall introduces a million hues of orange, red, yellows. But now that I've done it once I probably wouldn't ever come again. There's far too much else to explore in this great state and there's only so many chapters left in my story!

We arrived at the dog park, and the rules are supposed to be that dogs under 35 pounds stay on one side, and dogs over 35 pounds stay on the left side of the park. There were three dogs over 35 pounds in the small dog area, and their owners did not move. A lady with her two small dogs tried to enter and from the outside said that one of the large dogs was growling, so she couldn't enter. An elderly man arrived with an aggressive and heavy dog and entered the small dog area. At that moment, I picked up my dog and told my husband to grab the smaller one. In less than a minute, the dog was attacking my dog, and if my husband hadn't grabbed her, who knows what would have happened. The owners stayed in the park where they didn't belong, and more large dogs kept arriving, along with about 10 more people. When we spoke to them from outside, after we had taken our dogs out, and told them to read the rules, a woman with curly blonde hair and three large black dogs, one named Stella, said, 'Who are we? That she had been organizing that gathering in the park for five years and how many times had we been there?' It's extremely rude and disrespectful. We are Maine residents, and we have the right to use the park. She should not be breaking the park rules, no matter how many 'years' she's been going there. Everyone was very rude, and there were several dog fights. I recorded everything, and even as we were walking back, the woman was talking about us as more people arrived. Attention should be given to these rules, and especially people who have been living here for years should be the first to follow them, be more polite, and more welcoming." --- I hit videos and pictures to send via email

Nestled in Augusta, Maine, the capitol building is large and appeared pretty plain when we first arrived. There is visitor parking available on the side and in the back of the building. So when we arrived in the back, it looked like a large, unremarkable, white building. We decided to take a peek inside (it was nearly closing, so it was just a peek) and then take a walk around the perimeter. I'm so glad we did. The view from the front is pillared with and rotunda topped. It was lovely. The grounds aren't extensive but well appointed on the pathway leading to the front. We were happy we made the stop!

It's one of the easier state houses to find the main entrance, and the security guard was very friendly since the visitor's desk was not being manned. He gave us a map, along with some advice on what to see, and sent us on our way. I went to the rotunda first, as it is usually the most impressive part of a state house. This one was surprisingly bland. I never thought I would use the word bland to describe the rotunda of a state house, but looking up into the dome that was the only word to come to mind. I went to the Senate and House chambers, and nothing much to see there either. There appeared to be a really cool painting of George Washington, but it was covered to protect it from nearby painting going on. The best part was a balcony with rocking chairs. The Main State House did not live up to my expectations on the inside. The grounds outside are nice, but nothing really impressive there either. The Maine State House does not stack up well against most of the state houses in this country.

We came in Spring, so we took the opportunity to walk the trail behind the house to the Kennebec River. Honestly; this spot is underwhelming, and I'm not sure why you'd come here unless a) you were getting a stamp for your Passport, or b) you were coming here with your elementary school. It's a big rust colored red house that you can look at. It's got a placard that reads, "No, George Washington never slept here but he knew the owner. Two other people who figured prominently in the American Revolution did sleep in this house - Benedict Arnold and Aaron BUrr. Built in 1765, this colonial Federal-style house was home to several generations of the prominent Colburn family. In September 1775, Colonel Benedict Arnold led an expedition of more than 1,000 colonial soldiers up the Kennebec River to attack the British stronghold of Quebec City. The men came to the Kennebec from Massachusertts on board eleven ships which disembarked here at the home of Reuben Colburn, a member of the Maine Committee of Safety. Colburn helped spawn the idea of attacking British Quebec by way of the Maine wilderness and had supplied critical information to General Washington. On Arnold's arrival, Colburn had 200 freshly-built wooden boats called bateaux ready and the expedition used these to carry its provisions and military stores upstream toward Canada. This house was Arnold's headquarters and the launching point for his famous expectation against Quebec. Colburn had assembled a brew and built the boats within two weeks of General Washington's request to do so, but without enough seasoned lumber for the sizable task, the builders had to use green wood which was more prone to fail in the water. Twenty of these craftsmen, including Colburn himself, then accompanied the expedition to Canada, carrying supplies and repairing the boats as they traveled." The Colburn House, carriage house, and barn are open by special event only.
