This auto shop used to be very good. But now it is horrible after the management changed. I had a State inspection there, they forced us to change the brake pads! about 7-10 days after brake pads replaced, every time when I brake the car, it makes a hissing sound, it sounds like the pads worn out completely. And they charge 3% credit card surcharge unless you pay them cash!! Will never to go there again!! read more

I dropped by Lei's Auto and told them that my power window is broken. I want to know how much they are going to charge to replace it. At the time, they were about to close, so I said I could drop by the next day. The guy strongly suggested I leave my car there so that they could work on it first thing in the morning. Given we are both Chinese, I believed him. So I left my car there and asked him not to work on it until he gave me a quote. I didn't hear back from them the next day, so I called. They told me it's going to cost more than 1000$ to fix the window. I think it's too expensive and wanted to figure out something else. However, when I went to pick up my car, Lei's insisted on charging me 45$ for the mechanic inspection. I didn't think it was fair, but as a lady who wants her car back, I had no choice but pay the 45$. No one informed me that leaving my car there would cost me 45$. In fact, I think they set me up for this. Have been going to Lei's for a long time. They are always done when they say they will be, as far as I have ever experienced they recommend the necessary repairs but don't add stuff on, and they usually end up doing it for a bit cheaper than other quotes I've gotten. Just trustworthy and very pleasant to work with. It's a bit further for me now that they've moved over to Lancaster Ave and at first I thought I'd just go somewhere closer but I learned my lesson quickly! read more

I think what makes finding a trustworthy and worthwhile garage is places like Lei's. I really wanted to like this place. I had a decent experience in 2019 and I figured I'd try to support this place since COVID must've been hard for them as a business. I even arranged for friends to pick me up or for me to Uber so I could drop off my car here, as my place is far from the shop. I came in for an oil change + my annual inspection. The service done was fine except the mechanic ripped a portion of my tint off. This was mid grade tint that cost me $150 to get done back in December. I wasn't notified and it wasn't until I noticed the problem myself and came back that Terry decided to argue with me over it. He was nice enough to say that he'll pay to redo the tint itself. So I thought, ok fine. From there, all he gives me is a date and a time two weeks out and then assures me that it'll be taken care of. I do as he says and arrive at the time he stated. When I arrive, his assistant manager gives me the run-around of when the guy is going to arrive and how long it will take. I asked if he could call the guy directly or if I could call him myself and he said "we don't have his direct number. Once he's on the road we can never contact him". When I was considering to just leave my car and Uber back to my place, I asked, how will the tint guy know what I want? I was told, "he'll just know". When I asked the assistant manager if he had different shades and darknesses for the tints, he was very vague and said 'the guy will take care of it' - but ok, it should be done how I want it done, especially since you messed this up in the first place, no? Not very reassuring and my doubts continued to grow. So I wait and end up waiting 4 hours that day to no avail. At the end of the four hours, I was just told that "he can't make it anymore, sorry". I was asked to reschedule and I was given his word that everything would be taken care of. The assistant manager schedules me for an appointment two days later, so I oblige not expecting much as these gentlemen have given me no proof to trust them thus far. I call two days later in order to verify that the tinter was coming today and was told that the tint guy called and said he can no longer make it unfortunately. Funny how suddenly they could get in contact with this guy now despite giving me the run-around two days early. I was also told that this never happens and this is the first time it's happened. Funny how that works and I was tired of playing their games. I did everything that was asked of me with nothing to show for it. After some back and forth with Terry, he says he'll give me $40-$50 in cash for me to go get my tint replaced on my own. Now, it cost me $150 to get it done originally and I was quoted at other shops nearby between $150-$180. I told Terry this and he scoffs, "you can quote me at $500 but you're not getting more than $50". Mind you, this is after he gave me his word that he'd have the tint fixed out of his own pocket - as he should have. He then says that it shouldn't cost more than $200 to tint the entire car.. Ok Terry lol. This "mysterious guy" who does tint for you only charges $200 for the entire guy. Rather than argue with a guy who refuses to utilize logic or reason, I take the $50 to have it over with. I did everything they asked + wasted two workdays to have them fix something they messed up. Yet, the best Terry can offer is $50 and no sympathy or concern. From this long story, you can see that these guys lack good communication, dignity, honesty, empathy or even remorse for what had transpired. They sure do love to argue with you though. And they can't be told otherwise, they'll just argue and argue. Just keep that in mind if you're thinking about coming here. It's pretty disappointing considering I was hoping to be a repeat customer here. I'm not sure how they manage to run the business; I'd be too ashamed of myself to conduct business they way they do. Pathetic honestly. TLDR; don't come here. Your time and effort are better off spent elsewhere. read more

Been bringing my car here for the last 3 years. They're fast. They're informative. They're affordable. They tell you what to look out for down the road ("you should replace your brake pads in the next x months," "start looking out for tire sales," etc), but they don't try to push those sales on you while your car is in the shop as other mechanics I've patronized are wont to do. They do what you ask for without upselling. They also call before they replace anything critical that they may notice while working on your stuff, and they confirm pricing and all that jazz with you BEFORE they do it. I know that's something most of us expect, but it's nice that they're really consistent about this. Not only that, but the place won't break your bank. If you need anything replaced, they give you options, and they let you decide. As long as I live in the area, Lei's is my spot. read more

Lei's used to be my go-to shop for oil changes and inspections, after reading many good reviews on yelp. My most recent experience has left me pretty frustrated. I took my car in for an oil change and mentioned that I was occasionally having some trouble with overheating. I had recently had my thermostat changed at a different shop and asked them to just take a look at it. They told me I had a leak in my coolant system and told me to bring my car back in the following week. Over the next two weeks my car was in and out of the shop for a constantly increasing number of concerns that wracked up nearly $1,000 in charges. Suddenly my car began having new problems that hadn't existed before and the check engine light came on. They did numerous fixes and the problem only seemed to get worse. Finally they said they didn't know what was wrong and gave me my car back. I took my car to another highly rated mechanic and had to pay an additional $400 to finally fix my car. This mechanic told me that "the previous mechanic installed a problem that wasn't previously there." He showed me actual parts from my car and the poor workmanship done by Lei's. I am very frustrated that I had to pay nearly $1,300 to repair a problem that they themselves caused. Also, my girlfriend told me that one time when she was there they accused her of improperly installing a car battery and stated, "Well this is what happens when a woman tries to install a battery." F you Lei's. I will not be coming back. read more

I decided to try this garage because of Yelp, and yall did not steer me wrong. Like Casey, my car is old and ripe for overselling, but these guys fixed the problem without trying to take advantage. Great communication: the inspection, oil change and repair took exactly the amount of time they said and cost exactly the amount of money they said (which was less than other city garages). I don't know about other reviews, but Mr. Lei did a terrible, terrible job with me. He botched my windshield, told me I needed brakes when I didn't, and took three days longer than he was supposed to. It was supposed to be a simple inspection. When I took the car to him, he refused to tell me beforehand if my cracked windshield would or would not pass inspection until he got it into the shop, even though he knew damn well that it wouldn't; I found out later that there is a clear guideline that a windshield must be replaced if the crack touches the outer seal. All he had to do was say "no, it won't pass" and order the glass at the beginning of the day rather than waste my time. So I picked the car up from him at the end of the day (after standing in a huge line of utter chaos because they'd taken too many people and hadn't finished anything). He told me it didn't pass, but that he could order a new windshield and do the job. I said yes, thinking that if he didn't know how to replace a windshield, he wouldn't offer to do so. Also, he said he wouldn't charge me again for inspection (the one nice part of this interaction). He also told me that my brakes really needed to be changed, but that they were just good enough to pass. Luckily, I didn't choose to have this repair done at the same time. I later went to another shop and they showed me my brakes and a brand new set of brakes. They looked practically identical. Apparently, the rear brakes on Honda's are meant to last a very long time, so don't let people fool you. I dropped the car off a week later to get the windshield replaced. It took three days longer than it was supposed to, and it still looks like hell. He tried to charge me extra money for the molding on the side of the windshield that HE ripped off in the process of changing. What's worse is that he didn't even mention it until I said, "this looks terrible". They left bits of molding and greasy fingers on my car. They couldn't get my rear-view mirror to stay on and tried to get me to do it myself at home. In sum, yes, the inspection was cheaper. But he tried to add repairs that I didn't need and he was late and unorganized. Perhaps I have high expectations because my parents generally perform my car maintenance, but you really don't have to settle for this kind of treatment. I've met many an honest mechanic, but Mr. Lei is just not one of them. read more

I had my car inspected here and it was only $50, as opposed to the $70-90 or so most other places charge (even Midas half a block away). The employees were friendly and helpful and didn't try to rip me off or sell me unnecessary "fixes" to my car like most other places. Actually, when I got my car inspected last year at Midas, they told me my rear brake pads just barely passed inspection and were really wearing down, but hey! They had a brake service special going on! They were really pushing this but I opted not to get it done, thinking I'd wait until they inevitably failed inspection this year. I went to Lei's this time and didn't hear a word about my brake pads from these guys. I really get the impression that they're not liars out to get your money, and they seem like honest mechanics. The place is good, staff is helpful and respectful. The crew indeed is professional and knows their thing. They were able to repair my car in no time and they did pretty good work. My car is in way better situation now. However they do intend to over charge you in the end, the initial quote wont be how much you pay and they really dislike how they try to over sell you on everything here. read more

This shop has gone downhill in the past two years. I have been a customer since 2009 and was happy with their work, but after David left around 2014 the shop changed. Lei is still in charge, but the people working under him now routinely sell service that is not required. Example 1. I took the car in for an oil change in Jan 2016. I expected to pay for just an oil change, but they told me I needed an emergency brake pad replacement and new rotors. Skeptical, I decided to wait. I return to their shop five months later in May for my annual state inspection, having done nothing to repair the brakes in the meantime. At that time, the car passed state inspection with no mention of the brakes. Example 2. I took the car in for a quote on an exhaust leak. They said I needed to replace the exhaust pipe and muffler, possibly the catalytic converter. Estimated cost $450 to $600, not sure. Skeptical, I took the car across the street to Meineke where I paid $150 for the job. There wasn't anything wrong with the muffler; simple welding of new pipe fixed everything. To add additional insult, Lei's Auto even charged me $25 for estimating the exhaust work when they said it would be $5 to look at it. Lei, you need to seriously reconsider your mechanics. You may be making more money, but you've lost a loyal customer of 7 years. read more

These guys are honest, accommodating and affordable. They actually showed me the broken parts of my car, explained why they broke, why they need repairing, how they would repair it and how much it would cost to make the repairs AND how they would save me money of they could. After going to a nearby chain that wanted to charge me 4 times as much money for a ridiculous amount of work and repairs (none of which Lei's ever mentioned), it was refreshing to get a more reasonable idea of what my car needed and what was recommended. Was looking for a place to get some body work done before selling my car and took my car here after reading older Yelp reviews. Mr. Lei (owner) personally came out, took a look at it, described what he would do to fix it, and gave me an estimate right there - far lower at a reasonable price vs. what other places offered around Philly. They fixed it in a week, and they did a great job - my car looked brand spanking new w/ no blemishes. I even went back a day after because I noticed some minor ?paint stains and he personally rubbed it off for free! Also fixed my back seats (had popped out) and front hood latch (wouldn't open) for free too while I was there. If you are looking for your trustworthy, neighborhood mechanic to get body work or regular maintenance/emissions done, I would 100% recommend Mr. Lei. read more

I was disappointed by them. My SES light was ON, went there for like 4 times in 3 weeks. Changed two O2 sensors, one air sensor, spent almost $1,000. SES still ON and they can do nothing about it. Even charge me more labor fee when change the 2nd sensor. They have no repair skills I guess. read more

Dave is great and just tells you how it is. He's not trying to swindle you out of any more money than you're willing to spend. I called about getting 4 new tires on my 2008 Civic and he offered me 3 reasonable tire options within the price range I was looking for. Price quotes per tire include labor, balancing, etc. Only thing not included in the price was alignment which separately is an additional $80. I've been bringing my car here for the past couple years for the annual inspection and oil changes and appreciate their professional, no nonsense approach to providing high-quality care and service for my car. Lei has a heart of gold, and I will trust these kind honest people with my cars as long as I live in Philadelphia. I was confused about the process of registering my car in Philly when I moved here, and he explained everything and told me exactly where to go. Ever since, I have been bringing my car to Lei's. The prices are fair, the people are knowledgeable and friendly, and they never treat me with the sexism I've faced my whole life at other auto body shops all over the country. Pro-tip - there's a chain link fence lot on Ludlow across from Paul Robeson school, just off of 42nd. If it's open, you can park your car in there to go inside and talk to the mechanic! I took my car to Lei's for an inspection and they told me that I needed to replace my front struts, for which they quoted me $600, and also said that the problem with the struts was caused by an unusual rust problem that they'd have to figure out how to fix. After googling about struts and the signs of strut problems, and also looking for anything on rust issues on my model, make, and year of car that would affect struts--and finding nothing--I took it to another auto repair place that has an excellent record for honesty, and they said that the right front strut needed a dab of oil and was otherwise fine. No rust, no need to replace. What's really shocking to me is that I have been taking my car to Lei's for a few years. Now I wonder if they were cheating me the whole time. read more

Wanted to find a local mechanic for oil change. Went for a routine oil change and found out that there was a leak in the fuel line. Took it to my dealer and the dealer wanted double what Lei's was quoting me. Lei's mechanic found the problems and fixed it much quicker than I expected and they fixed multiple fuel lines leaking and the total still cost less than the dealer's quote. Obviously, I was feel like I pay too much when I go to an auto mechanic, but I had a great experience at Lei's. read more

I can't praise Lei enough. I was a customer for a number of years when their shop was located at 42nd and Chestnut. It was with dismay that I saw it had closed and I thought of my experiences with other Auto service places. One place I took my car for inspection found $1300 worth of "work that needed to be done" before they would give me an inspection sticker. I have never had such a problem with Lei. But there is good news. Their new location at 4527 Lancaster is far better than their old location. There is no problem with on street parking. You just drive the car into the facility. Taking your car in and getting it out is no problem at all. I just had them inspect my car and do a couple of minor things and the total bill was under $100. I found that Lei has a considerable customer base that likes their work. When I was inquiring of shop owners in their old location about what had happened to them, I found that many people had made similar inquiries. In a city where getting things done by skilled people for a reasonable amount of money is always difficult, Lei should be considered a treasure. read more

Lei's Auto & Collision Service Center is everything I look for in a vehicle repair station. They were upfront about what kind of work my vehicle needed and there were no surprise charges. My car needed a part which had to be special-ordered from the dealership and they had it delivered within a day. There was a direct labor charge, not tons of little charges, and the work was done quickly. They were not short staffed, so customers were able to be assisted quickly and fairly. The workers and owner were friendly and they seemed to treat their customers in a personable and accomodating manner. Most importantly, I didn't have to go back for a second repair on my original problem (or another problem caused by the repair!) which, unfortunately, I'd experienced with other car service centers in the past. They are also an authorized state inspection center so if your car is due for its yearly check-up, that'd be a great reason to give Lei's a try! Highly recommended. read more

These people RUINED my Subaru and milked me for a fortune. They said the problem was this and I paid hundreds then they said oh now it's that I paid more money then they said you know what? It's this! More money handed over then one of the shop managers said you can junk it and I'll get you a few hundred$400. They also had an over grown man child named David working the window who played and joked entirely too much and grated on my last nerve. Average service at best -I'll go for an inspection since it's close. Go somewhere else if you need something done right -or quickly. A.C. problem: 3 visits, didn't fix it (ordered wrong parts, lost correct part, "not sure where it is" ...hey, how about a phone call so I don't come in and lose my van for a day -3 frickin' times?!? That was last year. Engine mount bolt missing: another mechanic found the same bolt broken ...is there another problem or they just over-tightened it? Last bill was added up wrong -charged me over $40 extra. Called once at a few minutes after closing because they hadn't called me all day: "Hello, Domino's pizza" -asshole, your number is in my phone. Called back, no answer. Called the next morning "Hello Lei's; hold on"... "tune up took 2 days and I heard the same story that others' have related; "your brakes are almost worn out". Like a fool, I went back to ask about the A.C. this summer -said they would call back with a price. Never did. I went to another place and they found a leak in the system, so Lei's guys had the wrong diagnosis anyway. Edit: After realizing that this place was not going to get any better, I've decided not to use Lei's for anything -not even an inspection. I know West Philly could certainly use a good place that isn't expensive -but, alas, as much as I love my neighborhood, I now only go across the river. 11th street, Don's and Ken's all have shown me what qualified mechanics and organized business owners can be like. I took my car to Lei's for body work and it looks great. I was confident going because he had done an excellent job on my mom's car several years ago. I took it on a Friday and it was all done by Thursday. For the record, I always feel like I'm being hustled by car people. I don't trust any of them. At all. The thing is though, I don't feel like I was hustled at all. Well maybe a little bit, but that's only because I'm paranoid. Replaced four new sets of tires for a Range Rover. Broke 2 Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) sensor and didnt take ownership over this. I had to dish out an additional $250 elsewhere for these sensors (additional 30% from my four tire replacement cost!) Also, records were poorly maintained. Didnt have a digitalized system to track back services carried out on my car. read more

Mr Lei and his staff have take good care of me and my cars through the years. Experience with this shop: I've brought a couple of cars here since 2007 for inspections, brakes, and suspension repairs. Pros: In terms of competency, I think these guys are definitely very competent, more so than others I have dealt with. They also don't give your car back dirtier than you took it in which is also nice. They always show what's wrong with your car and ask you whether or not you want to buy new parts or leave as is. Cons: Depending on who you deal with, Lei or Dave, your experience will vary. Dealing with Lei was not as pleasant as dealing with Dave. Seems like Dave tries to build a long-term relationship vs. Lei who seems like he wants to make as much money as possible on every visit you make to this shop. He's not lying to you but he is also not saying that you can hold off on this repair or maintenance for some time; come back later. Can't blame him for trying to push customers but that doesn't make for a good experience. Conclusion: Compared to the different shops I've tried, they are definitely one of the most competent and honest about what's wrong with your car. If you don't know your stuff though, you might be taken for a ride because Lei might recommend you to perform maintenance that you can hold off on. read more

This place is pretty lousy. Came here just for a brake job. I bought the brakes and brought them here. I was charged 87$ with tax for this very small job and they now squeak like hell. You think for that much money they would at least not make noise. Also the left side of my bumper was off a little. I'm embarrassed for these mechanics. read more

Updated review: they came and got my car out, but at that point I had already missed work for the day. They told me the part would arrive Tuesday, and when I showed up on Tuesday they told me they wouldn't be getting the part that day! It's easy to just call and let me know that... Anyway, Mr. Lei was willing to give me $50 off for my trouble, but was also pretty clear that they thought I was overreacting by asking for compensation for the work they caused me to miss. They showed me the report with the misfire code. I had a bad feeling and told them I have to think about it. It was the worst car repairing experience I had! They asked me $400 for a panel of painting in my rear bumper. When they get done with the painting, I found some scratches on the bumper and also some dust and sand inside the clear coat. I asked them to remove those for me, they said : who cares about those small shit? I also found the mileage changed on my car (gained 30 miles) and some one scratched my leather seats. Now my car is in dealer and I still have to pay more money for repairing! read more

Awesome service! Lei has worked on two of my cars over the past few years, and gotten to know them very well. On one occasion I drove my sputtering vehicle up while he was standing outside. He walked over and *immediately* diagnosed it. Another time after a repair, my car died as soon as I got home. Lei actually drove to my house to look at my car and fixed the mistake right outside my front door. Now, obviously that can't happen very often, but it just shows the dedication to quality, and his dedication to doing a good job. So, that's why I keep coming back! The staff is very informative and always make sure to explain exactly what's going on. They aren't secretive, and don't try to lump repairs together. They have a good philosophy on preventative car maintenance. Because of Lei's Auto, I have learned more about my own vehicles, learned how to take care of my car, and keep it running smoothly for a long time. I still enjoy working on my own vehicle, but I'm not a mechanic. If there's something I can't do, I bring it to Lei. Likewise, I can always ask them how I can *improve* the quality of my vehicle, and they don't hesitate to explain and give me options. read more
