I can't recommend this business enough. I brought my 2010 Nissan Maxima to Don's Auto Repair in East Passyunk after a really frustrating experience at a dealership. At the dealership, my car passed emissions, but they refused to give me a safety inspection sticker unless I agreed to replace both front hub bearings plus do an alignment for $1,618.71. When I asked for proof the bearings were actually bad (wheel play, stethoscope on the hub, etc.), they couldn't show me anything concrete just "it's the noise, trust us." I walked away instead of approving almost $2,000 of work. When I went to Don's, I did not tell him what the dealership claimed the problem was. I wanted to see what he thought it was. All I told Don was that my Maxima had a loud roaring noise above ~30 mph. He took the car in and within 9 minutes found the real issue: it was ONLY the front LEFT wheel bearing, NOT both. From there, he then gave me the option between a brand-name wheel bearing and an off-brand (the cheaper one only saved about $40, but it was still nice to be asked instead of told) Don explained clearly what was wrong and that the left one was shot and absolutely needed to be replaced, and the right one could wait. Don replaced that single left front bearing in about 3 hours. Don charged me almost $1,100 less than I would have spent following the dealership's recommendation. A nice surprise: Don does not charge a credit card fee, which I honestly can't say for anywhere else I've been ever. My car is now quiet, the noise is gone, and it was fixed right the first time: with one bearing instead of two, no guessing, and no pressure. If you're tired of feeling like you're being sold to instead of helped, go to Don's. He's exactly what you hope a neighborhood mechanic will be: honest, efficient, transparent about options, fair on price, and actually interested in fixing the problem without damaging your wallet. I had a flat tire over the weekend, and I called Don's on Monday morning, dropped off my car, and picked it up in 90 minutes with prices that are genuinely unheard of. I had already reviewed Don's Auto a couple years ago, and I've continued taking my car to them for yearly inspections. Yesterday, however, the lever that pops the hood of my car was malfunctioning, making it so that I could not completely close the hood after the battery had to be jumped. Living in Kensington, I was concerned a hood that was clearly not shut properly would be an invitation for problems. I called Don's and they were able to get me in within the hour! My car needed battery change. Called couple of places like Blatt tire, Toyota dealership etc and most if them said they would charge to check if there was any other problem. I already tested the battery and knew the problem was in the battery. Also, the charges were very high at other places. I called Dons and was asked to bring the car. They said it would take 1 hour to change the battery and complete state inspection. The prices were fixed and displayed on the board. No haggle. They put Interstate battery which has 2 year warranty. I was ok with that. Completed the inspection and didn't charge extra for the stickers like most other places do. My only issue is that waiting area could have been a bit more cleaner. I didn't wait much longer and left the car and came back to pick it up. But didn't feel comfortable waiting. They had masks so that was good. Also, the directions are missing. So you don't know where to leave the car. I left it on the side wall blocking it completely and it was there when I got back. Luckily no tickets but that was risky. Having said that am happy with the service provided. They were honest and upfront. I will come here again. read more

I have been going to Don's for over 20 years now. My daughter started go there when she was in college and lived a few blocks away. At her recommendation I started using their services and my son did as well. We all agree one of the main reason we continue to go to here is his honest business practices as well as the fair pricing. Whenever I call for an appointment I can get in quickly. One example of his honest business practice I'd like to share is when I moved back up to the area after living in Texas for 3 years. A couple of months before moving I was told at an auto shop there I would need new brakes soon when I went in for an oil change. I mentioned it a couple of times to Don and he finally asked why I was so worried about the brakes. After telling him what I was told in Texas he shook his head and said he'd let me know when they needed to be replaced. Six years later and they still haven't been replaced! He and his wife have become like "family" as we share stories with one another. They are a great family business and worth the drive to go there. I can't recommend them enough! read more

This is a small family owned business and I've been taking my car here for a few years now. It's best to call ahead of time and schedule an oil change if you can - it does get pretty busy. They are so friendly and the wait time for an oil change/car inspection is fast imo. If you don't feel like waiting in the waiting area, you can walk around the Italian market or stop by Paris baguette. They usually call you 10-15 mins before your car is done and if there are any other issues with your car, they will call you first and ask if you would like it fixed. No hidden charges! So a few weeks ago I had the wonderfully pleasant surprise upon arriving to my vehicle that my battery was dead as a fucking door-nail. Fml. I guess my whole foods trip would have to wait. I'm not exactly......woke in terms of like, car shit. Who even changes batteries? Do AA batteries work? No I'm kidding, I'm not that retarded. Obv phone call to my Dad informs me that I should just bring my car to a mechanic. I spent the next week feverishly researching car places (obv on yelp bc how else do you get information) and calling every place in the vicinity with good reviews to inquire pricing. As cheap as physically possible being the goal. If I remember correctly, this place had the cheapest price $145 I think. One of my favorite colleagues generously/dopely assisted me on St. Patty's day of all days in getting my car started, major success in the fact that we didn't electrocute ourselves. Without notice, I brought my car to this place to get my battery replaced and time was of the essence because I had a busy day ahead of me (St. Patty's day remember..). Literally 15-20 min elapsed and the car was ready, new battery installed. Staff informed me of the warranty, and ensured that if my new battery died within like 2 years they'd replace it for free. Car still works a month out so dope! Glad I came here bc they fixed my shit in a good amount of time. read more

My car unfortunately got a flat tire and I had to get it fixed. I called the repair shop At 8:30am when they open and they told me I can come in the afternoon to get my tire patched. From the telephone call, the employee was very kind and respectful and service once at the shop was amazing! My car was ready under an hour. They also checked the pressure on the remaining tires. When searching for an honest, reliable auto-mechanic, I turned to Yelp to find help. When I found Don, I read the reviews and couldn't believe it was real. I checked google, I checked reddit, I checked the regular internet (i dunno, Yahooanswers or something?) and it was the same thing - good, honest, reliable, fast. So, after taking my car out of another shop for a failed inspection I went to Don's. I wasn't disappointed. Pros: Prices are fair and competitive, especially for the City. Don is honest, upfront and you deal with him directly. He seems to thrive on repeat business and good word of mouth. It works. His shop isn't special on the outside, but the experience, pricing and speed are worth it. I saved about 25% on repairs going to Don and we discussed future repairs. Speed. Don is far faster than any non-corporate mechanic I've ever experienced. Really surprised and I even told him to take his time. He was even up front about taking me on a Saturday and not getting work done until Monday (the horror!). I'm not a regular driving so this was nbd to me. Open until 6pm. Great for those of us working a 9-5. Also open Saturdays until 3pm. He takes Sunday off. Cons: The Parking is miserable. It's worth noting that you can pull up to/in front of his garage for a few minutes while you drop your car. He welcomes it and then puts your car into his shop. I think part of the speed is the lack of parking requires it. There is no place to store cars long-term. It's a bare bones interior. That's fine and you probably won't sit too long. You're so close to the Italian market and some other stops that it's not worth staying at Don's. That's fine. Other notes: The reviews are real. Tons of 5 stars on yelp. Every thread on the /r/philadelphia reddit includes a host of mechanics people go to, but near the top is a rec for Don's. It makes sense. Conclusion: Great service, fast work, good prices.
