I had an extremely uncomfortable experience with Jess. Her tone was incredibly condescending and rude, and she was EXTREMELY dismissive, disrespectful, unprofessional, and visibly unpleasant/hostile. I was literally shocked as it came out of nowhere and this was my first time ever meeting this person. What should have been a simple haircut turned into a tense and uncomfortable interaction. Customer service and basic respect matter, and this fell far short of that. I've worked in customer service over 10 years and never experienced this. After reading SEVERAL other reviews describing similar behavior from this same person, Jess, it's clear this is not an isolated experience, which only reinforces that I'm not imagining how inappropriate this interaction felt. A salon appointment should never leave someone feeling talked down to or unwelcome. I will never be returning and would never recommend her or this establishment to anyone. read more

After over 5 months with no haircut I was looking a lot like a savage. My wife was not happy as well as my daughters and even mom got in on the what's going on with hair. My stylist for the last 3 years has not yet reopened due to covid. My son has been going to Mister Grooming for about 3 years and loves them. I decided to give them a shot. I made an appointment and on the day of the appointment i got there early. The shop is pretty busy and they follow the covid protocols very well. My appointment was with Jessica who was very nice and friendly and did a great job on my caveman length hair. I will definitely go back to Mister Grooming again. Visited here today for the first time to get a full service shave, a steal at $25 with a trim and straight razor cleanup with hot towels. More than a shave, I needed a brand new beard carved out of the overgrowth on my face. I knew that for setting the initial shape of my new beard, I wanted to seek out the steady hand of a highly talented and experienced barber. After soliciting suggestions and reading copious reviews, I ended up at Mister Grooming. I had the good fortune of having Jenn Beers doing the shave, and I couldn't have been happier with the outcome. Despite myself arriving a few minutes late, she never for a moment rushed through the delicate and painstaking process of going over what I wanted (including a patient review of photos), treating the skin with hot towels, pretrimming, and finally shaving and aftershave. Jenn's attention to detail was exactly what you would expect from a master barber with dedication to the craft. She took great care in setting each line and each angle in my new beard, tending to each element from the proper position and approach. She paid attention to the curves and shape of my face and gave me the shave I asked for, but in an application that highlighted my features (and let the beard obscure the less attractive parts). No cuts or nicks, of course. Her steady hand and firm skullcap grip convey the confidence of expertise. The products they used were excellent. The cream provided an excellent glide and the scent, which paired well with the aftershave I can still smell as I write this, is masculine, woodsy, and one I have enjoyed all morning. Not too oily, but provides enough moisture to nourish your face through a Pittsburgh winter. If I had one complaint, and it is a very, very nitpicky complaint, it would be that they didn't heat the cream; instead using a hot towel to heat it up after it is applied to the face. This works, but I prefer the feeling of the application of heated shaving cream. No big deal. If you are looking to set a beard, or just an excellent straight razor shave, I recommend Jenn Beers at Mister Grooming. I'll be back - and on time, next time. read more

I've been coming to Mister for over 2 years now, I have gone to lots of other barbers, stylists, etc, and Mister G&G is by far my favorite. Ali or Zack Dean are my go to, they have never let me down. They give you a classic cut with a modern look, or whatever you want. The environment is super laid back and fun. I always enjoy being here for however long it may be. When you are seated they ask if you want a drink, they have beer, water, and I believe they even have scotch or whiskey these days. The price for the cut you get is very reasonable compared to several other shops I've been to, and I'll continue to come back to Mister to get my hair and beard trimmed up. read more

Since my original review, my barber is no longer at this location. So I do not know any other Queer friendly barbers at this location and cannot say if the shop is friendly. Onto the review: You'll want to call ahead, like before you even need a haircut. Every time I call to schedule an appointment, they are booked for 7-10 days. One star for the complimentary drink, better chug your espresso if you don't want to drink the hairs that are about to fall in. Everyone gets the same hipster haircut: bald back and sides, with a little on top. Don't worry, you can tell everyone apart by the amount of mustache wax they use. If you have curly or coily hair, talk to your barber first! Every time I've gone in each client has had straight or nearly straight hair. I'm not sure if that was by coincidence or if that hair texture is their specialty. read more

Hard to not give this new joint 5 stars. First, the cut itself: solid. My hair situation isn't complicated, but Michael is a true professional - lots of questions about how I like it to look: length, product, geometry, how long it's been since my last cut, etc. Second, the experience: interesting, friendly, and definitely very cool. The space itself is super interesting - it looks like it should be the set of a TLC tv show called 'pittsburgh cutters' or something. Lots of art, kitschy stuff on the walls, awesome set up. The first time with Ali I told her to do whatever she wanted (I'm notoriously bad with haircut directions) and I thought it was the best haircut I'd ever had. Then I went again, tried to get Ali but she was booked-got Zach instead. That became the best haircut I've ever had. I called up on a Monday afternoon and I was able to go in later that night. I will never go to another barber shop as long as I am living in Pittsburgh. The whole crew is inviting, prices are good, and Michael (one of the owners) is great at what he does -- I am sure everyone else is, too, but I've been going back to him whenever I go. I always get a great haircut and conversation when I go in every 3 weeks or so, and I've sent anyone who will listen their way. You'll want to be sure to get an appointment, especially on the weekends, but you will leave there feeling good and looking as good as you can (whether that results in looking model-like or a like someone who wishes that the "husky-boy" section at Sears still existed to make shopping easier, like me, I can't say). read more

I was able to get an appointment on a Saturday with a quick phone call just a few days in advance. I was immediately greeted and asked if I'd like something to drink and felt very welcomed. MJ cut my hair perfectly and then washed and styled it. I first found Mike and the gang through my friend. Mike had been his barber for years before setting out on his own. I was in need of a cut so I took the tip and called down. The woman on the phone was personal and professional. While their website features a picture stating walkins were welcome, I was politely informed that appointments were required. Ok. I get being busy and to the point where you can't accommodate any joe off the street but maybe update your website then. Either wY I got an appointment and went down a few days later. When I walked in I was very impressed with the space. It's bright and warm with a mix of old furniture and punk rockish signs and hangers on the wall. Slightly hipster but not enough to be pretentious. This is very difficult to pull off so kudos. The girl at the front desk greeted me with a warm smile and a choice of coffee, water or beer. She didn't even judge me for going with beer at 11 AM (I had a long night ok?). The actual cut was a pleasant experience as well. The guys and girls working are funny and personable but are quite capable of cutting in quiet. Every time I leave I always leave looking great (at least the top half of my head does). With all this raving you might ask why I stop just short of a perfect score. For me perfection is something you need to hit to get the score. A couple things keep them at a 4. First would be the website I covered earlier. Second would be the fact that I can never seem to be able to get a straight shave. Every time I try to book one I am told the day is too booked and to see if there is an opening after my appointment, but of course there never is. Maybe I just don't like artificially inflated hopes. The final thing would be the price. Personally I feel they are a little on the high side but not to the point that they keep me away. All in all I like Mister. The cuts a crisp and clear at a relatively decent price. I have no plans on finding another barber any time soon. read more

I started going to Mister right after it opened in 2013. I had been without a barber for quite some time, bouncing around to random shops, friends, and whatnot. When Mister moved into the neighborhood, I gave it a shot. It's now six years later and I'd never consider going anywhere else in the burgh. Michael was always my regular barber, and he's a maestro. The man has magic hands. I really don't know how he does it. Every time. I can't speak highly enough of him and his skills. Sometimes when I couldn't get in to see Michael, I got haircuts from other barbers in the shop, and I've never gotten a bad cut from any of them. In fact, I'd say I've gotten nothing but great cuts each time I've been here, and that's six years' worth. All of the barbers are super skilled, attentive, and responsive to customer requests. They've kept me looking extremely sharp these past six years, and I really learned the importance of a great haircut from Mister. I've never received so many compliments before in my life. You really never know how average your old haircuts were until people start telling you how good you look now. You get what you pay for and more here. Plus, everyone is extremely friendly and their customer service is the best. Anytime you have an issue with an appointment, they go above and beyond to work with you. Just recently, I messed up the dates for my cut in my calendar and had to miss my appointment. It was my fault. I had a wedding coming up, and I wanted to get a cut beforehand. No worries. Shelsi and Michael worked quickly to get me in the next available spot. Couldn't ask for more. Beyond looking sharp, the people at Mister became my barbershop family. In today's day and age, it's rare to develop bonds with businesses, but Mister is the rare exception. Michael and the crew at Grooming know me and what's going on in my life better than a lot of my friends do. Getting a haircut here is like stopping by to see old friends. It's a priceless experience. Unfortunately, I'm moving away from Pittsburgh, but I'll always cherish my time at Mister. And any time I'm back in Pittsburgh, I'll be making an appointment for a haircut in advance. Fantastic first experience here with a great cut from Niles. A little nervous as I am remarkably not hip and this place is VERY hip-picture young professionals, lots of tattoos, fashion forward dress and of course great hair on all of the employees- but was met with respect all around and a friendly welcoming experience. Looking for a new place to get my hair cut, I decided to try Mister after a couple of friends recommended it to me. I was not disappointed. Probably the only negative criticism I could level at this place is that if you need a cut on the quick, they may not be able to accommodate you. You'll definitely want to call ahead to secure a time slot on the weekend; I called toward the beginning of the weekday, looking for a Saturday or Sunday appointment, only to find that they were already booked solid. I ended up with an appointment for the following weekend. The overall experience was quite pleasant. They lady at the front desk was gracious, and offered me a drink while I waited. My appointment was in the morning, so coffee and other beverages were offered rather than the beer that is apparently available later in the day. Everyone working there was quite friendly, chatty with their customers, but even more chatty with each other while they worked. There was a friendly, casual vibe that made the affair more relaxing than the experiences I've had in chain haircut establishments. I asked for a basic, no-frills "just make it shorter" haircut, that wouldn't require any product to maintain, and that is exactly what I received. I've gotten compliments on the cut. In no way, shape or form did I test the upper limits of my stylist's craft, but it is nice to see that you don't need to be trying out for a boy-band to make this place worth your while. The cost for a basic trim was $15 (not including tip). Definitely worth it. I will be coming back. read more
