Walter with his NG tube in, resting comfortably!
    Liz J.

My cat has had two stays in the Angell feline ICU in the last month and I couldn't be happier with the care he has received. As soon as we walked in the doors to Angell I knew we were in the right place. We had learned at our regular vet that he had a potentially fatal bladder blockage and were directed to Angell in Jamaica Plain. Upon arrival my cat was taken back and seen immediately by emergency personnel. He was quickly diagnosed and treated for his emergent condition and spent 5 nights in the ICU during his first admission. The providers, both doctors and technicians, were absolutely incredible in keeping us informed of my cat's condition, progress and plan of care. In addition, we received daily updates with photos from care coordinators who were supportive and communicative. Unfortunately my cat became ill again several weeks after discharge due to the lingering impact of his initial condition. We immediately returned to Angell and he received the same level of care as he did when his condition was more dire. He was, unfortunately, re-admitted but treatment was adjusted as appropriate given his unique presentation. Again, I was kept informed by physicians, providers and care coordinators daily-often more than once. While my cat is still ill and being treated, now as an outpatient, I am confident that they are providing the best possible care. As a fellow healthcare provider, I know that treatment does not always go as expected but that every effort is being made to promote my boy's recovery. He came home this week (the night before my birthday! What a gift!!). The only drawback of Angell, in my experience, is the exorbitant cost. I am lucky to have the funds and assistance to care for my pet and would spend anything to keep him healthy and safe but I know that finances are a barrier for many. That said, all veterinary care is going to be expensive, especially when treating the variety of emergent and potentially life-threatening conditions that Angell is equipped for. Walter's condition is extremely rare and they have been managing it well, as far as I can see-he is home and getting back to his normal self. Considering the cost of veterinary care, I could not recommend pet insurance more highly. A particular thanks to Dr. Rassias who took a special interest in my cat's care and was more communicative and supportive than I would ever have expected a provider to be. She was available as a resource on weekends, holidays and off hours-a truly exemplary provider. Dr. O'Donnell was also fantastic. Dr. Bent was Walter's internal medicine provider and she was supportive, informative and available whenever we had questions or concerns. There are a lot of negative (but happily mostly positive!) reviews on Angell but I think people forget that, in all areas of healthcare, there are unexpected circumstances that providers have no control over. Your pet will be in amazing hands at Angell and they will do every thing they can to make them well again. I would absolutely take my pets to Angell again but, as much as I love you guys, I hope to never have to see you again!

The facility and waiting area are very dirty. clean. We were there for over 2 hours and there was a large pool of urine on the floor the whole time. No one did any cleaning while we were there. I wish that the internal medicine doctor, Dr Gorman, would have any direct contact with us. It takes so long to hear back from a member of the internal medicine team, and since the person who calls is not a veterinarian, they cannot answer all our questions. This results in multiple calls and longer waiting time for information about our dog without addressing his health issues quickly.

Dr. Sullivan and his team are amazing! I would entrust my ferret McCracken's health to no one else. What I appreciated most about Angell is the expertise of its vets and technicians, as well as their integrity and honesty. I know they will recommend the appropriate course of care based on my pet's condition, rather than trying to get the most money out of me. They have earned a high level of trust in my book after 20+ years.

Negligence, took Cora's life here. She deserved better.

I brought Cora, my young and healthy 6 year old French Bulldog here to the ER with the absolute mildest of nausea symptoms. They told me it would be better to leave her for monitoring and throughout her 16 hours here, she was over sedated to the point she couldn't walk due to a double dose miscommunication, under-sedated due to them having no clue how long IV's fell out for, and forced into unnecessary physical tests that significantly stressed her out and right after they placed a tube through her nose and into her stomach she died, they brought her back to life and then sedated her again and she died. Reading all of the notes, Cora fought for her life against the people who were supposed to be helping her, they neglected her needs and created situations that didn't help her instead killed her. Her blood work was perfect when admitted and all they have done since is lie and change their stories when questioned. If I didn't bring her here, she absolutely would be alive. Also, their positive reviews on yelp and google are 99% fake. They all contain the same verbiage, "What I appreciate most about Angell is...". This is because they would have a 1% positive rating if they didn't falsify their positive reviews. Stay away from this ER.

Don't bother looking on their website because you might fall in love with a cat that you will likely not get. THEY pick your cat for you based on THEIR idea of which cat will be best for you. And you won't get it soon. Here is a direct quote from an eMail I got from Gifford. "We work by way of a matchmaking process, where we seek information from applicants about what they are looking for (or not looking for) in a cat or cats. Based on that information, and once a person makes it through our approved adopter list (which can be a bit lengthy at times), we review cats in care against the applicant's information and offer meet and greets with 1 or 2 cats or pairs of cats we think fit what a person is looking for. We email you their profiles ahead of time and if you want to meet them, we set up a time and if they don't seem quite right, we would try again based on your feedback about the offered cat(s). We don't currently have appointments where people can come meet multiple cats without working through the matchmaking process. If you are OK proceeding with our matchmaking process . . . ." No, I am not OK with that. Talk about arrogance. They also did not tell me if I was on their "approved adopter list" even tho they did say their interview with my vet went fine. And they only other thing they said about wait time was that kitten season was coming up so I shouldn't have to wait too long. I'll get a pair of kittens elsewhere. :-(

Bella the pittie mix was in their care for over a month, during which time they treated the multiple serious conditions this abandoned dog came in with, including surgical treatment for a painful eye infection. When I met Bella at the facility, I got to see her interact with several of the caring staff and volunteers: Bella was obviously very comfortable and attached to them all. It was touching to see each person take a private moment to sit on the floor, pet her and say their personal goodbyes. From the copy of the extensive veterinarian medical records I was given, I can see that Bella's vet care was proactive, thorough, expert, and regular. Perhaps most importantly there was evidence that Dr. Walz sought and valued the insights of the staff and volunteers who provided daily and hourly care to Bella. For example, medication was issued for a finite period based on the observations of the attentive staff (hives with which Bella came into the shelter reappeared after she ate a peanut butter treat, then a few minutes later ate a bee in the play yard). Bella and I have now been together for weeks and I am learning more about her behavioral and trust issues from being abandoned that will take us time to heal with patience and training. Realizing this makes me all the more impressed with how comfortable, safe and happy she demonstrated herself to feel when I observed her in the care of the shelter staff and volunteers.

Shultz was referred to us by one of my co-workers who adopted her dog through them earlier in the year. I never thought to check their reviews at the time, but when I looked them up afterwards, I was shocked to see such a low approval rating here... Initially, I did experience frustration with the communication - I had never adopted a dog before so I had a lot of questions that I thought could be cleared up in a quick 5-minute phone conversation. I could never get through when I called and when I asked via email if it was possible for someone to call me, the request wasn't acknowledged. That being said, they were extremely responsive via email. Even during after hours and on weekends, they got back to me quickly. They didn't always answer all my questions (to be fair, I had a lot of them) but the response time was always good. But all in all, I would definitely recommend Shultz to friends and family. On the day of our appointment the woman who met with us was extremely helpful and patient. She asked thoughtful questions about us and our living situation and seemed genuinely interested in making sure it was a good match for both us and the dog. She also shared good insight into what the initial days/weeks/months would look like as our new pup gets acclimated to his new home. I can confidently say we walked out with the PERFECT dog for us. In addition to helpful staff members, they have a beautiful facility and a great set up for these "meet and greets". My honest review would be 4/5 stars (-1 star because the communication on the front end) but I am leaving 5 stars because I truly don't think this is a 2 star organization.
