Super lengthy process! I was approved after an extensive period with a long application and multiple screenings/interviews. It's easier to get a job or apartment than this rescue shelter! Then, once I was ready to meet dogs, they told me to sign up for their Saturday adoption days online. You only get 30 minutes to choose what dog you like from just their photos or else you have to wait until the next two weeks to look again. They don't even update the website with the dogs they have available - all of which are pitbull mixes. When I asked about several dogs that had been on the website for a long time, they said he would need a backyard. As a single apartment tenant in Boston who has had 10+ years owning a dog actively walking him every day, I think this was ridiculous as so many people have dogs in Boston and take better care of them than some folks I know from my hometown. Isn't it better for a dog to go to a nice home for the rest of its life than have it be sheltered or move from foster to foster home? Why did you approve me then? read more

We adopted our Luna Sea 2 years ago during Covid-19. So of course we had to do the home visit virtually. And were quickly approved after checking our references and with our veterinarian. The foster who was taking care of Luna Sea noticed a cyst on Lunas head right before we were going to adopt her. The adoption was now going to take a bit longer due to this, while Last Hope wanted Luna Sea to have the cyst taken care of. But the foster recommended for my wife and I to become her foster until the cyst was taken care of. And Last Hope took care of making the necessary appointments for us as well as any payments to have this taken care of. As my wife and I see it: Last Hope went out of their way to help us to make sure that Luna was getting into Forever Home. So here we are now 2 years later. Luna is now 4 and doing very well with us and has become a loving part of our family. We also have a now 14 year old rescue that we have now had for 12 years. Unfortunately his health is declining. My wife and I are firm believers in having a Pet For Your Pet. And we have now decided that since Last Hope took and gave us so much more care and help for us to get our Luna. That it is now time for them to help us again, so we can again give a rescue dog a Forever Home with us. Last Hope K9 does the best they can and work very hard at what the do. I am an approved adopter who tried to adopt 9 different dogs from LHK9. I echo many, many other would-be clients that (A) every dog I applied for was not actually available or had been adopted to other families, and (B) getting an email response often took weeks(!!!). I was determined to rescue from them, often emailing about a dog within an hour of it being listed. I was brought to tears on several occasions after getting my hopes up about a dog only to find out it was immediately adopted to someone else. I gave up after 2 months of continuous disappointments. I understand they give a stock response about how this is a volunteer organization, but my family has adopted multiple dogs from other foster-based rescues and never had such a frustrating, unprofessional, disheartening experience. I suspect the size and ego of LHK9 prevents it from being truly accessible to this community. If you are determined to adopt from LHK9, the only hack is to attend an adoption event. But be warned: these events only have dogs that are the most difficult to adopt (for instance, pitbull mixes, or dogs with known behavioral issues) which was not feasible for us due to living in an apartment. read more

I went through the entire screening process and was fully approved. Every dog I inquired about, I never got a reply. When I emailed them 3,4,5 days later asking about my inquiry, they would say they never got it! Then they would give the excuse tht they are a volunteer organization. MOST RESCUES ARE! I would think twice before adopting a dog from Last Hope K9. And If you do make sure that your dog is in good health because Last Hope K9 WILL NOT SUPPORT YOU. They act like they care so much about the dogs in their care but once the dog is adopted they could careless what happens to it. Within 24 hours of adopting Indie my husband and I noticed that he had issues with his hips. This was a Sunday and it was confirmed by our vet on Friday. On October 21st we took Indie in to get x-rays to see what exactly was going on and the Vet confirmed that it was severe arthritis. Severe arthritis does not happen over night and there is no way that Indie's foster parents didn't notice this, not to mention the medical team from Last Hope K9 who checked him out for a puncture wound. There's a very good chance that Indie will need a hip replacement in the near future. Right now we're trying to manage his pain with anti-inflammatory medicine and fish oil supplements. Thankfully it seems to be working. I spoke to Tracy Crovello the adoption coordinator through email a few times before she went radio silent. A few emails later I still haven't received a follow-up email from her or the assistant director Kristin. Shows how much they really cared about Indie... Bottom line, be very careful when adopting a dog from Last Hope K9. While we love Indie so much and are so happy he's part of our family, we will never make the same mistake twice and will work with a reputable rescue instead. read more

Weeks wasted on the application process, checking out/speaking to your references & a home visit only to find out that it is IMPOSSIBLE to be connected to ANY of the dogs that you are interested in once fully approved. The correspondence is email based and on several occasions the response from the "volunteers" was rude & EXTREMELY delayed, ultimately causing you to miss out on a dog you would have loved to meet/adopt. Be very careful with the representation they make of the dog. In Boston this is a high volume operation. In my case they totally misrepresented the dog. He was not house trained. They said he was a little mouthy, he chews everything and nips and bites, skin has not broken yet but many bruises. Sad way to rescue dogs. They act not much better than a puppy mill. read more

They have a process and it can take time depending on how quickly the volunteers get back to you. I saw a dog on petfinder. Then went on their site and found a couple more I was interested in. The app asks to list names of other dogs if interested. I was contacted via email, had home visit, had my mom's in home cat a rabies shot updated, and was approved. It was a process for sure. The pets that I wanted were no longer available of course. I went on their website on FB and noticed they may be old pictures from the summer. I found other dogs week after week that I found to be interested in and it seems that they are pending adoption, pending a visit with someone else which means unlikely for me and 1st come 1st serve that other person has dibs. I even followed them daily for a while for new dogs but also seemed told not available. Now the person who visited my home says that she went to a fair and got her dog and went home with her dog immediately. Maybe fairs is there thing but their fairs only have limited dogs. I feel like they don't have enough dogs to go around for people who are interested. I'd be very lucky if I ever get a pup whenever that will be? read more

We went through Last Hope K9 to adopt our first dog this spring, and had nothing but a positive experience start to finish. We were drawn to them in the first place because they are foster-based, which means you're able to learn so much about their dogs from their fosters based on the dog's time in a real home environment, vs. a shelter/kennel where a dog's true personality/behavior can be harder to acertain. We especially loved the fact that LHK9 are so stringent/thorough on adoptions (that yes, does take time and effort!), which to us showed that they really care for each and every LHK9 pup from the second they become part of the rescue throughout the rest of their lives (which is also evidenced in other ways too, for example through their active/supportive Facebook community of adopters). So I think it's kind of crazy that there are a large amount of strongly-negative reviews on this page, which IMO seem to mostly stem from either: -People being frustrated that they didn't get what they wanted when they wanted (guys, it's 100% volunteer run, these people have full-time jobs and lives and cannot be on call for you 24-7) and/or -People not being aware of all they were getting into, either with regards to wait times/the adoption process (does no one read the website or emails where this stuff is described in detail?), or with what it means to be a responsible dog owner (sorry lady, being around heavy smoking actually *does* cause harm- I have asthma from secondhand smoke so can personally attest, why would a responsible rescue want to put one of their beloved dogs in that same situation?) That being said, I do think there's always room for improvement, even given their constrained resources- I get that it's frustrating that the dogs posted publicly probably already has a waiting list for them that you may not know about (I think this is likely?), or that you have to poke sometimes and wait a bit to get any kind of info about where you stand (with your application, with your list of dogs to meet, etc.). I also think it would be helpful to be better assisted in matching with the right dog based on our application- you give a list of dogs you're interested in to the team, and while the online descriptions are useful and more detailed than a lot of other rescue/shelters, that's all you have to go on in compiling your initial list (no real additional suggestions or guidance from LHK9, unless you're in-person at an event) so it can be a bit like flying blind- plus you have no idea which of those dogs might even be available for you anyway. We did find the perfect dog for us shortly after approval, but I think first-time adopters in particular might need a bit more of a helping hand? But I still can't recommend LHK9 enough for any potential adopters- as long as you are appreciative that they are 100% volunteer run (so please be patient and expect delays!), are aware that you should get pre-approved ASAP because the process does take some time and effort (and know if you're not approved, that it's for a good reason), and are aware that posted dogs likely have potential adopters in line already (so try not to get your heart set on a specific pup, and be open to others). I'm clearly biased because our pup is the best thing that happened to us, and LHK9 rescued her as a stray when she got hit by a truck which required surgery and took care of her at every step of the way, so we obviously think highly of them. I hope to join their efforts and become a volunteer myself, because they truly have their rescues' best interests at heart and want nothing more than to find the doggos their perfect forever home. This is hard but necessary work, and you see the amazing results in all of the rescue stories- I'm grateful this group exists. read more

We adopted our 2 dogs from Last Hope in 2017. The application process may be rigorous but it's because they want to make sure dogs are being placed in appropriate homes. They are a 100% volunteer and foster-based organization. These dogs have been rescued from terrible situations and high kill shelters in the south. Many of these dogs need a lot of time to learn how to be dogs and adopters who are willing to invest that time into them. They were first strays who ended up at shelters then spent time in quarantine and at least 2 different foster homes. Our 2 may not have been the first dogs we emailed about but those dogs found great homes and our 2 are the absolute loves of our lives. We even chose Last Hope as the charity to donate to in lieu of favors at our wedding because we are so grateful to them for saving our babies. read more

Worst experience could ever imagine trying to adopt a dog. So i filled out their application online. I was put in contact with one of their volunteers. I scheduled an appointment to have my home inspection done. That week i found myself in the hospital being diagnosed with diabetes. I sent an email to their volunteer, letting him know i needed to reschedule because i was in the hospital. His response to me was "not everyone has to be home, just saying." WHAT?!! Sure pal, let me send you to my house while I'm in the hospital so my wife can chase 2 kids around and deal with you casing my house out by herself. NO THANK YOU!. I eventually had my home visit done and began to inquire about dogs for adoption. Apparently there is a way to adopt these dogs before they get posted online. Every dog i was interested in was either pending or had been adopted by the time someone got back to me. The only excuse i got was "we are all volunteers" I'm starting to wonder if in fact my house was being "inspected" for other reasons then dog adoption. Save your time money and energy and hit a local shelter. read more

Great organization! I adopted my first LHK9 pup 5 years ago and he has been stupendous. I recently adopted another dog from LHK9 and the process was as successful as before. Please be aware that this is a rescue agency and you may not get the first, second, or even third dog you are interested in! These other dogs are getting adopted and that is a wonderful thing. Both times that I adopted I missed on a few dogs I inquired about... I then ended up with two great dogs that are so perfect for me and am so happy I did (although I'm sure whoever got the others got great dogs as well :) ). I appreciated the rigorous vetting, as without it I could have adopted a dog who didn't fit in with my family and we'd all have been miserable (with LHK9, we had two home visits with two dogs who didn't fit with the cats, but the third dog was PERFECT!). Though limited only to adoption meet and greets, my experience with Last Hope K9 has been all positive. They host these aformentioned meet and greets at local parks, eateries, and public places all over the city. Fosters will bring their dogs out to meet potential adopters and everyone has a great time. Last Hope has an excellent screening and vetting process for their fosters, so the dogs never go to anyone who wont love and spoil them. When it comes time to find a forever home for the dogs, Last Hope is there every step of the way. It's to bad your policies are so strict. You did not allow us to adopt (Max) because our dog was not spayed. Some email transactions were slow to respond to, but on the last conversation we were told our application to adopt Max could not be approved. Things happen for a reason and we found another dog. He gets along great with our dog and we did not have to get her spayed. We do not agree with your decision and therefore, we will not give be giving your company name to people who are looking to adopt any dogs. read more

I rescued one of my dogs through Last Hope and couldn't be happier! The volunteers with this organization work tirelessly to make sure that the right dog gets to the right family. It takes a little longer to get through the process when working with a volunteer rescue, unlike a shelter you don't get to pick out your dog and just go home. There is an application, a home visit, and a meet and greet. The person who was fostering my dog went out of his way to facilitate things. The volunteer even brought our potential new dog to my house to meet me my other dog. It took several weeks to get through the process, and I ended up with a great dog! He's happy, energetic, and gets along well with everyone. I just love him and am so grateful to Last Hope for introducing us! read more

I can not say enough great things about Last Hope. The process can take a little while, but I appreciate that it helps find the right match and make sure it's an appropriate home for the dog. And your time isn't taken up by them, you basically just fill out the form and wait for someone to contact you for a home visit which takes like 15-30 minutes tops. It is all run by volunteers so it can take a little while for them to respond, especially adoptions but I know you're still put in based on time stamp for each dog. The best way to meet a dog is through an event I would think. That is where I adopted my dog. They have events basically every weekend and a "big" event once a month. There were 25 or so dogs there when I went and they lost which dogs will be there before so you can look to see if the dog might be a potential match for you. I'm so grateful for Last Hope and their sister organization in Arkansas for pulling my dog from a dump site and making sure he was given proper care before I adopted him! read more

I have fostered and adopted dogs before, and have never seen some of the questions that I was tasked with answering. Regardless, I am happy to be thorough. My biggest problem was the fact that I couldn't get anyone to answer about the specific dog I was interested in. Now, I do understand volunteer run organizations, but the question was a quick "yes/no" which would've then let me decide about the wait. I'm sure it's great when things work out, but knowing how many wonderful families are waiting to HELP--you'd think they would communicate in a more timely manner. My husband and I decided last year to adopt a dog, following the death of our 13 year old Lab. I wanted an adult rescue as I felt we had the time and energy to put into getting a dog acclimated to new owners and had no young children in the house. I filled out the long application, gave references and had the home visit. We were approved...and that's as far as we ever got. Every time I emailed about a dog, it had already been spoken for -- and I was emailing daily. I think part of the problem is this organization rescues a lot of pitbulls. Any dog that is not a pitbull is besieged with requests. Often, more than a week would go by between my repeated emails and any response from the organization. The one time I did get a response on a dog, she turned out to have so many issues (not listed in original posting, such as extreme separation anxiety, food aggressiveness, medical problems, etc.) that I decided not to pursue her. We ended up adopting from Save-A-Lab in Rhode Island, which I strongly recommend. It's also an all-volunteer group that pulls labs and lab-look alikes from high kill shelters in the South. This group was very professional, prompt and completely open in the posted description of all of the rescued dogs behavioral and medical issues. We got a wonderful dog very quickly and couldn't be happier. read more

Last Hope K9 seemed like a promising rescue organization after seeing many of their dog pictures listed on Petfinder.com. After completing the extensive application in early September and passing the reference checks, we had an on-site visit on Oct 2, 2017. The home visit coordinator came to our house and seemed a bit reserved while asking many of the same questions we had already answered on the application. When she asked what kind of dog we wanted, we said we were open to most breeds, but we wanted a larger dog. We also mentioned that we had seen quite a few rescue Pitbulls online, but had some concerns as we had heard that home insurances might not cover this breed of dog. She retorted that she had two pitbulls and had no problem with insurance. Later when she asked if the dog would be sleeping on our raised bed, we indicated that we we didn't know yet. She then said that we should consider getting a step because if the dog jumped off the bed, he/she might get hurt and we would have to get accupuncture and physical therapy for the dog. Say what? In our final closing remarks with her, I mentioned that we picked her organization because we really wanted to provide love and help to a dog that was truly in need. She then indicated that she would pass along her notes to the adoption coordinator and we would hear back soon. I followed-up with a thank you that night while Last Hope K9 went radio silent. I followed up a week later and again the following week. I then waited 4 additional weeks to follow-up again and referenced the 6-week time span since our on-site visit. The adoptions team application coordinator responded this time in a scramble and mentioned the home visit coordinator was cc'd on the email and there was an event that weekend we should consider attending. I responded that there is no point in going to the event unless we were pre-approved. I followed up 4 days later after the event and heard nothing. After 14 emails in aggregate and well over 3-months, we still haven't heard the final word from them. You would think this organization would have had the guts to just say that we weren't approved rather than leading us on in such an unprofessional manner and wasting everyone's time. After the overall poor experience and communication with LHK9, a one star rating is generous IMHO. Thankfully we found an amazing dog at a different rescue organization. read more

I am very disappointed with this group. They "never follow up" with you. And if you make a big stink over it, then they will reach out and ask what the problem is. And by the time someone eventually reaches out, it's too late and the dog you want is adopted by someone else. Not very happy with this, especially if they promise to get back to you, and they drop you like you weren't that important. Talk about a possible scam here. I adopted a wonderful little Tibetan spaniel from Last Hope. Although I was a bit impatient at the beginning I understand why adoptive parents have to be completely screened. One of the final requirements was for everyone who lived in the home to drive to Boston to meet the dog to insure it was a good fit. I explained my 92 year old mother would not be able to do this as we live on the Cape and the drive was too far. The volunteer handing my little dog was so kind. She offered to drive the dog down and if he did not work out she would take him back. Needless to say it was love at first sight. She went way beyond the call of duty and My mom, "Leo" and me could not be happier together. Great experience!! read more

Super disappointed with this organization. I met a dog at one of their adoption events and was told to apply for him online. I went home and applied for him online which started my whole application process with them. From beginning to end, the whole application process took me about a month. They called my references, I had my home visit done and at the end, almost a month later, I was pretty much told oh sorry someone else put down a money deposit for the dog you wanted. Not one person from their organization ever told me I needed to put a deposit down. Now not one person is answering my e-mails regarding this. Not sure if these people are just out to make money from their animals, but it seems like they obviously care more about a money deposit then placing dogs in good homes. I had nothing but incredible experiences with Last Hope. We adopted our dog 4 years ago and have continued to be involved with the rescue as volunteers. It can be hard to adopt the one dog you see online, but this has to do with the sheer number off adopters and their need for more fosters. The more fosters, the more dogs they can bring up from AR. They have been amazing to volunteer for and their post adoption support and facebook group is a great resource for any new adopter. it certainly helped us in the beginning. I would recommend last hope to anyone looking to adopt from a reputable rescue who follows all mass agg laws! read more

Last Hope K9 claims that they try to match dogs to the best home possible. They say they do this so that there is a low return rate. During the process of approval, you go through this thorough questionnaire, where they ask you what behavioral problems you could live with and which ones you couldn't. Last Hope never checked the dog that I was adopting to see if it had any of the behaviors I answered no to. I am a newbie to owning a dog (so I wanted something a little on the easier side) and also needed a dog where I could leave the house because I live alone and work 8 hours a day. This particular dog that I picked out was part of the prisoner foster program so he was fostered in a prison. The day they dropped the beautiful dog off, they handed me a letter from the prisoner. In it he states that the dog has severe separation anxiety. How come the adoption agency never mentioned this to me or did not know? Either... lack of communication or they just don't care. I kept the dog for two and a half months. During that time, I contacted them many times and they just said there is an adjustment period. So I gave it time. I got a trainer, I gave him plenty of exercise, I used pheromone (sprays, collars, and plug ins), hemp oil biscuits, calming chews, lavender oil, a thunder shirt, a flirt pole, etc. I tried containing him to a crate, a gated room, the run of the house and the garage. You name it, I tried it!!!! I tried everything imaginable to keep this dog because he's the absolute best, but he was not getting over his isolation anxiety and I could not keep him safe when I was not home. I was using day care a lot, but it would cost 600 dollars a month if I had him in it every day I worked, which I just couldn't afford. His anxiety was so bad, I was afraid to leave to go food shopping! And the worst part was, he had motion sickness! So I couldn't leave him, and I couldn't take him with me! Loving the car was another trait that I expressed I absolutely needed. I had so many plans to go hiking and take him with me everywhere. But I couldn't. I did so much car training with him, it's ridiculous. At first he wouldn't go near the car. I got him to the point that he would jump in as soon as I opened the door (because he knew we were going somewhere good). The only part was he would puke if we drove for more than 10 minutes (tried everything here too). I was sooooo stressed out! The match couldn't have been any more wrong! Anyway, why would they give a person who they know lives alone and works an 8 hour job, a dog with isolation anxiety? Hmm...I say... because they just don't care. A few weeks after I gave him back, after the pain had settled a bit, I wrote all of the volunteers an email about my experience and how hurt I was and how I may never get another dog again because this experience really destroyed me. And I was writing them to help others not have to go through this. Did I get a response...no! I wasn't mean in the letter, but I wanted them to know that the experience broke my heart and the dog's heart as well. And if they just communicated with the prisoner/foster, this could have all been avoided. Trust me, it took all I had to give him back. I did not want to. But it was just not possible to keep him safe while I was at work...unless I paid 600 a month for day care.
