I've seen Dara for the past year and I am never disappointed with my cuts. When I visit, I like to talk out my styling ideas with her and she always gets my hair on point. My latest visit was a clean up. I am trying to grow my hair out and the layers were getting sloppy. I was in and out of Shampoo Dolls in under 40 minutes. Another perk of seeing Dara is I feel like her cuts always grow out well. This is especially important for me since I live far away. I can't always make the recommended return visits after 8-10 weeks. This location has it's own parking lot which is especially nice if you arrive during peak shopping hours. I've been seeing Jesse since 2010 and will never see anyone else or "cheat" on him. He is very personable, professional, and talented. I have had super short to very long hair and Jesse knows exactly what to do with each style. He is great at shaping your cut to compliment your features and face shape; he's also a color genius. I ALWAYS get compliments on my haircuts and it feels great to hear people tell me that my hair looks amazing. I followed Jesse to this salon, since he was at a different place just a while ago. When I went the last time, the facility was still under construction but functional. I cannot wait to go back in a few weeks and see the end result. Everything looked great when I went, so I know it will be that much better. The salon is HUGE and roomy and clean in its slick design. The shampoo station is great too, with a reclining chair that your stylist or shampoo person can control with a remote. I recently sent my boss to go see Jesse at Shampoo Dolls and she absolutely loved him and booked her next appointment right away. Her hair turned out great and he made it more up-to-date with color and style. I always recommend Jesse to family and friends. There are very few I trust to style my lions mane, let alone cut it. After so many bad experiences I'm so happy I found this salon. Beautiful setup and everyone is extremely friendly and helpful right from the start. Nicole did an amazing job with such an extreme cut. I came here on a Wednesday evening and saw Nick for a cut and color. Service was great, which makes sense since it wasn't as crowded as I thought it would be. Though it could've been because their 20+ stations are spread out and plentiful. They offer complimentary wine, which is a nice touch to the whole pampering experience. Also, after checking in, they gave me a robe to change into using one of their changing rooms. After waiting a few minutes, Nick called me back. It started with a wash and a gentle head massage. He then put the toner in my hair to blend my grown out highlights with the rest of my hair. Turned out fine right after (as this review is being written a couple weeks late). I think the toner has slowly faded because Im starting to see my brassy colored highlights again (hence 4/5 stars). He might've not wanted to leave it in for long because I was 6 months pregnant and expressed my concern about the dye touching my scalp. Overall, it was a good experience. I just wished the toner would've kept my brassy, grown out highlights darker for a little longer. read more

Pualani has been my stylist for about 5 years now (since 2007) and I would seriously follow her to the end of the earth for my haircuts...like they are that good. I walk in knowing I'm going to get a good haircut, and always leave knowing that I have a great haircut. Since I've started going to Pualani I've experienced at least 5+ new hairdos and Its because shes so versatile and up to date on style that she can make anything happen for you. The location is a little difficult to find at first If you're used to walking around the Row, but once you find it you'll actually find the new location quite convenient. The place itself is great, huge space, great decor, great music, just an overall comfortable place to be in. Now gentlemen dont let the name fool you though, even though the place is called Shampoo Dolls its definitely suitable for men, hahah. I've been getting OK cuts from another unnamed salon at Santana Row for the past year now and still hadn't found a salon in the South Bay that I could call mine. As an SF transplant, I regularly got my hair cut at Yosh for Hair (Gina Khan Salon) and just never settled into a groove with a salon down here. Shampoo Dolls might just be changing that. Things started out a tad rocky when I got there five minutes before my appointment (and also five minutes before opening) AND entered the wrong side of the building (I entered the building from the entrance on the Winchester side of the building but apparently the main entrance is on the side of the building facing Santana Row). When I walked through the doors on the second floor, I was very impressed with the space, but I approached an empty receptionist desk (there was a computer) and stood around waiting for a bit assuming I was just early. I saw two stylists roaming about but neither said anything to me so I waited. Finally, I asked one of the stylists if I was in the right place and she said no. The receptionist desk was on the opposite side of the building. Thanks for letting me stand there awkwardly for a few minutes. It would have been nice if there were a sign directing me to the other side of the salon or something... Anyways, after checking in and robing up, I was greeted by Paola. I told Paola I needed way more movement in my long hair. It just felt heavy and flat when I prefer fuller and thicker hair. My prior two cuts at the other unnamed SR salon were blase; I asked for the same thing but never truly got it (it wasn't BAD tho). But Paola worked wonders and did an AMAZING job with my hair. I love that she took her time (cut ended up taking 1.5 hours total but I'm ok with that) and communicated with me the whole time, but not in a way that made me question where she was going with the cut. As a customer, I like to tell a stylist what I want as an overall look and then put things in the stylist's hands since they are the experts (as opposed to someone who wants me to tell them the whole time how I want my hair cut, I know nothing!). Paola was meticulous with my cut and blow dry and I'm very appreciative. Overall, loved the space, loved my cut, enjoyed my experience, and would recommend this place to my friends. read more

This is a great new location for Shampoo Dolls. I used to go to their older location, but now it seems everyone has transferred to the new one. It's really spacious, modern, and well decorated. There are tons of stations and a large waiting area. Since Joanne switched careers earlier this year, Dara has cut my hair the last few times. The transition was pretty much seamless and Dara does a really great job. I also happened to run into Joanne during my first visit to the Winchester location and it was really nice to see her and catch up. read more

Just started going to Shampoo Dolls a couple months ago (this one just opened) and I really love it!! I actually followed Jesse here from another salon and have "been with him" since 2010. When I first started coming to him I had hair down to my waist and I went straight to a pixie cut. Not everyone can cut short hair and he is WONDERFUL! Everywhere I go I get complements on my short hair. Now I don't even have to bring in pictures I just let him do what he thinks is best and I've never been dissappointed. He's done my color too and again he cuts into it beautifully. I "cheated" on him once and that was proof enough for me that it's truley a craft to cut a short style well. He's a lovely person and I enjoy all our appointments so much. Only tip is that the store still doesn't have a sign so it can be easy to miss so be sure to call ahead and get instructions of where to park. The store is beautiful, modern with great light. My stylist: I started going to my stylist, Pualani when I moved to the Bay area just under a year ago. I am so incredibly happy with how she makes me look every visit! I always get compliments on both my cut and my color for several weeks after going to see her!! The salon: Pualani recently moved to Shampoo Dolls from another salon in Santana Row and I am SO happy she did! I would follow Pualani just about anywhere...so it's a bonus that this salon looks awesome - and it's still under construction! It's big, open and the music and people are great! This is a (long overdue) review for Nick M. I've been coming to Nick for over a year now, and out of all the years I've been getting my hair dyed, cut, and styled professionally, he's the ONLY person I've come back to more than just once or twice, much less for over a year. His customer service is amazing. He always offers me water, tea, coffee, and even wine, which really adds to the relaxing experience I always have at Shampoo Dolls. I also love that whenever I need to wait for a little bit for my dye to set in, he always asks me if I want a magazine, then asks if I prefer gossip or fashion :) Also I have always appreciated how he'll engage in conversation when I want to, but if I'm tired or have had a stressful week and don't feel like talking, he doesn't force small talk or anything. And NOW for his incredible talent. He can really feel out a person and determine what their overall style is - for example, he could tell right off the bat that I want something somewhat natural looking; not too "edgy" (obviously nothing wrong with that, just not my style); and very well blended (aka not streaky or with chunky highlights). He always does *exactly* what I am looking for, but somehow seems to make it look even better than what I imagine. Also I really appreciate how at the very beginning of each appointment, he'll tell me what he kind of has in mind for me, and will ask me what I think about it, and we'll work together and figure out something I feel comfortable with, and he as a professional thinks will look good. He also gives me good tips on how to make my hair look "salon quality" even at home. And he will suggest good products for my hair without being pushy at all. I can't rave enough about Nick. He is insanely talented, and yet his prices are very affordable considering his skill set. I've been to stylists who have charged me much more for a much less satisfactory job and experience. This is by far my favorite salon in the Bay Area. I moved here in 2006 and since have tried a ton of salons and stylist. Not one compares to Aj. He is an amazing stylist. You know you have found true talent when the stylist can not only give you an amazing cut/color/Fox others mistakes...But also when he can cut your boys hair, and give your tween daughter a fabulous cut as well. I am one of those girls who has never been satisfied with a salon. I have cried in salons since I was seven. During my teenage years I cut my own hair because of these trust issues I had with stylists. Now that I am 20, I decided to be an adult and try out an actual salon. During the summer I had a gift certificate to Shampoo Dolls. I was paired up with Moni. I'm naturally an edgy person and she gave me a deep purple, slight a-line bob (drastic change from my usual long locks). I was in love, and I received compliments left and right. 6 months later I wanted just a basic straight cut so I went to my moms usual guy. I left in tears because my cute a-line turned into a mushroom looking bob that ended up too short. I called up Shampoo Dolls and after hearing my story Moni was able to fit me into her tight schedule the same day. And then WAAALAH! more mushroom head! I am a young broke college student and this salon might be a little out of my budget but it is completely worth it! Usually since I am young I do not get the same treatment as the older professionals, but that is not the case with this place. I have never been so happy with results, the people and the service. First off the salon has a warm welcoming vibe, I'm always greeted very genuinely by the person at the front desk, offered a drink right away (I always go for the white wine!) I instantly feel like it's time to relax and to be pampered. Second, I have known Nick for about 10 years and I've always seen the passion flowing through him as a stylist. I've seen him grow in his profession and trust him fully with my hair (because let's admit that isn't easy to find). and I mean literally from playing with my hair in high school to having my hair treated with such integrity at the salon. Zero star for never receiving an apology from the stylist. 2 stars for the manager/owner/senior stylists who corrected the problem at no cost but only after seeing my firm determination of getting it fixed that night or I was not going to leave. I believe you have left out a crucial detail: there was no intention of refunds until my review was created. I am not going to argue anymore because there could be many factors involved, but one cold, hard fact is that my hair was not the color that I asked for, the bleach was left in way too long, and is still damaged to this day. Nasser is absolutely fantastic and does an amazing job on my cut and color every time! I really see a transformation of my hair whenever I walk away from the salon. He takes the time to really understand your hair type and lifestyle and factor that in to his cuts. I personally don't have a ton of time to do my hair each morning, but the way he layers my hair makes it so that it drys nicely on its own, and works with the natural waves of my hair. On my color, he is always doing unique colors and highlighting styles that allow me to feel variety while still keeping the highlights very natural to match my look. I would highly recommend him! My hair came out completely different from what I had in mind. It's better. The staff was incredibly polite and willing to answer all my questions before I booked my appointment. Monica was very attentive and thorough. When I went into panic mode thinking my hair would fade to pink, she offered to cover it with a darker purple before I leave town. I wanted a change but don't have a stylist in the area yet. After finding Shampoo Dolls on Yelp, I booked an appointment with Nasser. I was greeted by a very friendly receptionist who made sure all my information was correct in the computer, gave me a robe and offered me coffee, tea or water. Unfortunately, being a nube I put the robe on like a hospital gown and felt like an idiot! My friend came as "moral support" and the offered her coffee, tea or water as well. Nasser arrived and seemed honestly excited to ensure that I got not only the style I wanted, but that I would love it. Although I didn't book time for a colour treatment he took the time to consult with me on possible colour options and talked me through different possibilities and techniques. He was honest with me about some of the colours I wanted being more "high maintenance" colours. I brought in a magazine with a photo of the hair style I wanted. Nasser was fantastic at working with that, but also making sure the cut suited the shape of my face and me specifically. I went from mid-back length hair to an asymmetrical bob, and was a little shocked at the end result. It was a tad shorter than I envisioned, but Nasser explained why and was very accommodating when I asked him questions about the products he used. Overall my experience was excellent. All of the staff were friendly and accommodating. I would definitely recommend Nasser and Shampoo Dolls to anyone who is wishing to get their hair done right. read more

This is a (super overdue) review for Nick. He is nothing short of amazing and gave me the results I've been longing for. Some background on my hair before I came to see him : In September 2013 I decided to (by myself) go red. And I mean Ariel red. I loved it for months. But the upkeep was insane. And washing hair in ice cold water in the winter was going to send me straight into an insane asylum. So in very late December I decided to try to strip out as much red as I could and go brown. Yeah, wasn't really happening. Because I refreshed my red weekly, that red wasn't going anywhere. In early January I finally decided I had had enough. I'm a person that when I want to do something, I want to get it done right then. And Shampoo Dolls fit me in that afternoon and place me in Nick's hands. Because I deposited so much red, my hair was a work in progress to get it out. But yes he did it. My hair is now a beautiful deep brown (without any red tones - yay!!) with amazingly bright blonde highlights. And what makes the whole experience complete is that Nick is an incredible person. A delight to talk to and very personable. Heck - I even trusted him to put scissors to my hair. LONG unrelated story there but lets just say - it takes a very unique person for me to allow that. I came across Shampoo Dolls while browsing on Yelp for blow dry bars. I needed my hair blown out for an event and wanted something affordable and close to come. I found this salon and the fact that you could book an appt online got me! I made an appt for a toner and blow dry with AJ and I must say it was a great time! My review here is in praise of Danielle, but includes comments on the new Shampoo Dolls location. From my previous review at the old location: "She is professional, friendly, and I always walk out looking and feeling like a celebrity...okay, maybe that's a slight exaggeration. But my hair certainly looks like it belongs on a celebrity." I'm happy to say I still feel the same way about my experience. Danielle, is the best! She has been cutting my hair now for almost 3 years, and I won't go anywhere else. My hair is colored, and could look damaged and lifeless (did before I began having my hair cut by Danielle), but she makes it look sleek and marvelous! I always walk out of there looking and feeling stylish, and I am able to approximate the same look later on my own, which certainly didn't always prove to be the case with other stylists in the past. Danielle is a meticulous artist, who takes her work very seriously. She considers hair type and the shape of your face. The cut is always perfect! She often adds something special beyond what I have asked for, to try something a little different or give the look that finishing touch, and her instincts are spot on! Most importantly, Danielle listens and gives you the haircut you've requested. She also makes excellent recommendations in terms of products. Though the new location is not as convenient for me, I will keep coming back as long as Danielle is there. Thanks, Danielle, for another great cut last Sunday! I am loving it, as usual! Shampoo Dolls is listed in one portion of Yelp as closed. Their first location on W San Carlos is closed, but there is a new location on Winchester Blvd. in a building that is technically part of Santana Row, but set back from the street a little and not easy to spot the first time around. The new location has advantages and disadvantages. Traffic is terrible (par for the course with Santana Row), so allow extra time to get there. Parking is free if you tell the attendant that you're going to the salon, and there is parking in the back too (if the front lot is full), which is nice. The salon itself feels a little unfinished, in terms of decor. It could use more drapery or pillows, and still maintain the minimalist look it seems they're cultivating (could be pushed further toward the "Euro Chic" style that's hot right now - maybe add some sheer, full length window treatments in white - would add to the relaxing, spacious vibe - and replace the wall advertisements that feel too busy with more interesting art work). The location of the reception desk is awkward, and always feels like it's in the back of the salon to me (there are two entrances, and they apparently want you to enter from the back parking lot Santana Row side, though the Winchester Blvd. side feels like the front). Feels unfriendly when you walk in. They should find a way to resolve this situation. Also, they seem to be having problems with their product orders since they moved. They are often out of whatever I'm trying to buy, and I sometimes have to buy my products elsewhere, which I'd rather not do. A big plus is the fact that their prices have remained pretty much the same. That's nice, especially considering the fact that this much larger location must be more expensive to run. I would recommend this salon, even with the minor suggestions for improvement...especially if you ask for Danielle! Shampoo Dolls is a professional salon with nice ambiance and moderate pricing. It is well run. I rarely have to wait more than a few minutes, and on the rare occasion when I do, I can expect a great cup of coffee or bottle of water while I relax in the spacious, comfortable waiting area, listening to a good mix of music. I love their diverse selection of magazines, which includes not only the typical hair stylist choices, but also the latest issues of Vogue, Cosmo, Elle, etc. Shampoo Dolls offers luxury for those on a modest budget (not dirt cheap prices, but modest, meaning mid-range). I should add here that I color my hair myself, so my "modest" rating is based on the cost of the cut only, which is about mid-range for nicer salons with experienced, serious stylists. If you're accustomed to super cheap cuts (with the unpredictable results that go along with the low price), Shampoo Dolls may seem Pricey to you. This review is for Nasser! He is the best hair stylist in Shampoo Dolls if you want someone who is good at details with your hair and have a good taste with style. Every time I go, he does an amazing job with my hair! I feel like I don't just get a hair-cut. I get an artwork from him :) I get so many compliments with my hair ever since I start coming to him. I also recommend two of my friends that are very picky with hair stylist, and they are happy with Nasser too. He knows how to handle Asian hair and give the look that you want.
