I was looking for a nice bottle of wine for the weekend and luckily they happened to have wine tasting and Scotch whisky tasting that day. And thanks to the wine and Scotch whisky tasting I found a bottle of each that I like. The store has so many good wines and spirits and also a lot of variety of chilled alcoholic beverages in the fridge. Manager, staff and the owner are very helpful and friendly. Even though the store is very small but I like the store's layout because it's not too big and very easy to navigate. My friend and I came here because I wanted to purchase a bottle of Amsterdam vodka which Mr. Vino does not carry. We've been here for some time perusing the place trying to find the perfect bottle to purchase. A minute too late a petite woman strolled by and asked if we needed help. Just to be sure I asked if she carried Amsterdam and if it was hidden somewhere else. Unfortunately, she told me no. I decided to go with Absolut Mango flavored vodka. It was priced at $29.99 + tax. My favorite neighborhood wine store in Forest Hills. I absolutely love this place. Please expect excellent quality of wine and liquor for a decent price considering how pricey things can be in this part of the neck of woods. A decent price is $11.99 for less for a bottle of good wine. The staff is beyond helpful and provides that personal customer service touch we all should experience when entering and leaving a store regardless if we make a purchase or not. Been ordering from here for a while. The woman who answers the phone is so nice. She always remembers who I am and my address for delivery. Not to mention, if I'm ever confused about what I want their suggestions have never let me down. One point off because sometimes the delivery is late by an hour or two and I believe they stop delivery an hour prior to closing. read more

A good wine may be all about the grapes, but a wine store requires good customer service communication skills to interact with customers. Upon walking in I specified to the cashier/ sales associate "what do you recommend a red that is under $15.00?" His response was very brash and extremely blatant: "STAY THERE, I'LL GET ONE FOR YOU!!" Okay, like a dog I can follow instructions to stand still while the dude immediately turned his back and walked away without inquiring what genre of red I liked (Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Zinfandel, Sangiovese, Malbec, Chianti, or Cabernet Franc??) or region and country of origin as my preference. He did not heed the hope within my mind as to what I desire in conjunction with his ignorance of my food pairings, nor can the man appease my needs as a customer but only accord to my budget restraint. He immediately handed me a bottle of Malbec which I do NOT like!! Robotic salespeople without the tact and grace etiquette of poor communication skills in customer service. What I ultimately attain was: Cigar Box Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 2010 from Maipo, Chile 13.5% by volume at $11.99. No comment on this bottle as I did not imbibe. This store is losing customers, due to the woman behind the cashier. Customer Service is always key to a successful business. My family has always stopped for a variety of wine or liquor gifts. However, the woman managing the cashier is rude. She yelled at a request to respect social distancing by saying: "if you don't like it, wait outside!" Most businesses in the neighborhood are managing social distancing among customers. So disappointed at the dwindling service. A disservice to the other employees who have always taken care of the customers. read more

I've been eyeing Mr. Vino's selection of Rip Van Winkle and Pappy's Bourbon for quite some time. Same 4 bottles have been on the shelf behind the register for a while. Beginning of this week I decided it was time to treat myself in time for the holiday. Went in and the woman behind the counter (who I now believe to be the Manager) priced them out for me. Mind you, these are pricey, very hard to get bottles of Bourbon. Today I went back with every intention of purchasing the 10 y/o Rip Van Winkle. I was hoping to potentially be able to negotiate a slightly better price, as friends who have purchased these Bourbons in the past have mentioned that liquor stores have some room to negotiate. So, off I went with cash on hand. Asked the man behind the counter to confirm the cost and it was the same that the woman gave me earlier in the week. I then asked him if there was any wiggle room if I were to pay cash. He said he needed to get the Manager --- and yes, it was the same woman I spoke with earlier in the week. Bottom line, she bumped up the cost 10%. When I said I was just quoted an entirely different price not 5 minutes earlier, she rolled her eyes and firmly re-quoted the higher price. I said thank you, you gave me the information I needed, and left the store. A few phone calls later, I was able to secure a bottle at another local liquor store. Perhaps I low-balled my offer to much. However, I was certainly open to negotiation and truth is, if she held firm at the initial price ($450 .... yes, you're reading that correctly!), I would have bought it. However, I clearly insulted her and as such, she bumped it up to $500 even though that is NOT the price in the computer system. I know that because twice this week people checked that system (including her) and quoted me the $450 cost. In a neighborhood chock-full of liquor stores, my suggestion is to shop around. There are certainly MUCH friendlier and more customer focused options that Mr. Vino. read more

Austin Street is rich in ice cream and pastries; not so for booze. Mr. Vino is the more expensive of the two wine/liquor stores within a few blocks, and the selection is slightly better than it could be. It's a safe place to drop in on your way to a dinner party, but you'll pay a few dollars extra for the convenience. Liquor is even more obviously overpriced. $61 for a 1L bottle of Makers! First of all, everything is a bit overpriced - which can be explained by the location. reason for the bad rating, though, is that the idea of customer service escapes the staff working at this store. I'm not the first one to say so, if you just look at other reviews you will see there's a pattern here. The woman at the counter swiped my card, said it was declined, and then shut off the machine. My credit card company confirmed the charge successfully went through. When I asked for her name, she declined. When I asked for the boss' name or number, she declined. The customer service was the worst I could've ever experienced. While Mr. Vino IS a small space (Forest Hills commercial rentals are through the roof, ya'll), they have a decent selection of wines. They also carry other "spirits" for last minute pinches or parties. The staff is knowledgeable and they have wine tastings. The decor makes you feel like you are in a fabulous wine cellar! I can get the same bottle at most other wine stores for $5-10 less.Their staff are not very friendly or helpful. This is an extremely small but neat & cheery liquor store on Continental Avenue, in the heart of Forest Hills. They make use of every precious square inch for their wine displays. I have purchased wine from them in the past, despite their higher than average prices, simply because of location and convenience. Usually the service is good. There was no greeting, no acknowledgment that i am even standing there in the store. I said i would like to try the tasting-- he poured the wine but didn't even look at me. Flashback a few years back. I was super excited to see that a wine store was opening up on Austin street. Why the 3 stars then? I've been pretty disappointed with every wine that I've purchased there, especially after taking the time to speak to the workers at Mr. Vino and purchasing off of recommendations. I enjoy malbecs and have had a fair share of them. After describing the preferential types of malbecs I like, the sales guy was quick to recommend something. It didn't seem like he really listened to me at all when I was speaking. But I definitely knew he wasn't when I tasted the wine. I've been here for a wine tasting and was again excited to walk in on one. Unfortunately, none of the wines appealed to me. Which was fine because everyone has their specific preferences. But listening to the same sales guy describe the wine and tasting it, the description was off. Perhaps it's my palate. Perhaps it's theirs. I'm usually spot on though. read more

Great place in Forest hills to pick up a nice bottle of wine, whatever your preference is. The owner is very nice and knowledgeable unlike some places where you ask if the wine is dry or not and they have no idea. Outside just grabs your attention. In a pinch, you can walk into Mr. Vino and I'm sure they'll have something acceptable. If you're looking for a bunch of high brow know-it-alls, then yea they definitely have that, too. Each time I've ever been into their stores I encounter a level of snobbery that is nonexistent at any of the surrounding wine and spirit shops. My first encounter with them was asking if they happened to carry a bottle of Genever. It is an uncommon spirit and I never expect a liquor store to have it, especially one as diminutive as Mr. Vino. Well, Mr. Vino did not have Genever, but they did have a lot to say. They could have said, "No, i'm sorry" or "I'll look it up and see if we can order some" (like Wine and Liquor Co-Forest Hills or Queensbury Liquors each said, respectively), but instead they started with, "I think you mean Gin. Genever, Nah, never heard of it and you must be mistaken. I think you mean Gin." :: deep breaths :: Genever is a thing. That's why i'm asking you. I'm sure it was a one-time thing. (By the way, two weeks later they were carrying Bols Aged Genever.... deep breaths). Today I was trying to find the recently popular Forty Ounce Wines Rose. I had called and visited two sold out stores after work and called the local Queensbury Liquors (who called their local distributor while I was on the phone only to find out that their local distributor is sold out). I figured I could forget about the Genever incident and give Mr. Vino another try. Since they are snobs, just maybe they might have the elusive "sold out everywhere" 40oz bottle of Rose. I walk in today and asked if they had the 2016 Julien Braud 40oz Rose. They don't have it. I'm not surprised. No one had it. After trying to explain to the woman cashier that I am not, in fact, looking for a magnum 3L bottle, I explain that i'm looking for a cheap bottle of rose in a funny 40oz container, show her the picture, and mention that it's extremely difficult to find. I ask if she could check to see if they can order it. I'm asking because I'd like a case or two for a party. Also, Mr. Vino sells other $8 bottles of rose, so who's judging? I'll tell you who's judging. Mr. Vino is judging. The woman refuses to look up to see if she can order it and says to me "Our clientele would not buy this kind of product." Let it be known that they sell cold rose is a can and single serving rose bottles as well has tiny bottles of liquor. Also, let it be known that... I AM YOUR CLIENTELE. Or at least I'm desperately trying to be. The real lowdown about this place is that it's pretending to be this hip, in the know, local expert niche store; but they only know how to come across as snobs. Perhaps they're trying to only market to the rich kids on the other side of Austin, but they are doing so by ostricizing the rest of the community. They are condescending and they obviously do not care to know nor are they open to learning from their neighborhood cocktail/wine/spirit enthusiasts. Do yourself a favor and walk one more block to Co-Forest Hills. They are nice and friendly and are not pretending to be something they aren't. Or go to Queensbury who has a much better selection and will literally start stocking your favorite wines and spirits if you ask them. read more

I've been to this store quite a few times. Wine selection is good- wide range of quality wines. The spirits there are also very high quality, and not all the ones you see everyday. The store is a bit small, but the staff has always been pretty friendly. The first time I came, I got a free bar of Lindt chocolate. I went for a tasting once as I am on the mailing list, but the vendor was over an hour late...so I can't say how the tastings are but they do occur weekly. Kind of cool if you're in the area for an extended period of time. Also- strange detail- I called to request the price of a specific bourbon as a gift for my friend, and was told they aren't allowed to tell me on the phone. I don't know if that's a law or just a store policy...but good to know (I'm from CA where they sell everything in the grocery store and advertise in the circular so it didn't seem like a strange thing to ask, but you never know w NY). read more

Definitely is a small space, so you may not find the brand you are looking for but you will find a wine you look. Also, it is just so pretty in there and the prices are good. Staff was very friendly. And they have some bottles in the fridge already in case you want to have something to pop open right when you get home (like I did).
