We had a nice room with bathroom ensuite. My friend and I were not able to stay for breakfast but they had a nicely appointed kitchen and island seating area, and other rooms where you could dine. Despite all rooms being filled with antiques, the house had a comfy feel to it. I really appreciated the ability to get into NYC easily and cheaply from this property . The NJ Transit station is about five minutes away (Maplewood Station). You can buy your tickets at a kiosk right at the station. In June of 2024, a round trip ticket into NYC was $15 and it's a 40 minute ride each way. Look at njtransit.com for train schedules - -generally a train every hour. You are dropped off right at Penn Station. When you are leaving NYC and going back to NJ , enter Penn Station from the corner of 7th Ave and 31st Street -- there is a NJ Transit entrance and you will see stairs or escalators and can get downstairs to access fare Kiosks as well as the tracks. (If you enter from other entrances at Penn Stations, it's a bit challenging to figure out how to get downstairs for the NJ Transit tracks)

The attached bathroom was huge and had everything we needed. Erika took great care of us and cooked an amazing breakfast. Very friendly, relaxed and welcoming. We definitely will be back and have already recommended it our relatives who live in the area.

It was fully decorated for Christmas, with Christmas music playing throughout the house and my room even had it's own Christmas tree! I checked-in during tea time and live piano music was being performed in the lobby! My room was clean, warm and cozy. The shared common area had waters, a Keurig machine and delicious home-made treats available. The included breakfast was my favorite part! Everything home-made from the scones, to frittata, fruit salad, lemon cream and clotted cream. It was served in a delightful lavender room with a blazing antique fireplace. If you love antiques and old mansions and fully decorated rooms-this place is for you! Great for a romantic couple getaway, but I just felt like pampering myself for Christmas. Mathis House feels like a warm, cozy hug!

I called them and expected them to say that they had no vegan or gluten-free options. But the owner, Vicki, answered the phone and told me they had vegan and gluten-free tea service, including scones, sandwiches, desserts, and more. I was shocked! My mom and I went there for lunch about a week later. Our waitress was so knowledgeable about the house and the food options and she answered all of our questions. That was the beginning of a long history of coming to the Mathis House. I have since brought groups of friends ranging from five to twenty. We have attended a few Afternoon Teas, including the holiday sessions; Cinco de Mayo, and a Masquerade Murder Mystery. I recently celebrated my birthday there. My favorite thing about the house is how we can view the lovely decorations. The house is decorated to reflect every season. Plus, I love how vintage and classy the atmosphere feels. A visit to the Mathis House is always an enjoyable time!

Everything is made for each guest perfectly ( the rooms, breakfasts, beach passes, etc). Most people there have been going for years because it's so nice. I do have to say though that if you are allergic to cats you may need to consider another place. Pets are allowed there and they have a lot of cats. There are 4 beautiful rooms with 3 of them having excellent views and 2 with balconies and 1 with a little porch. Sunrises are Amazing too.

With our last stay (my weekend birthday gift to my husband) started out with seeing water stains above the staircase and the ever present smell of cat urine which apparently came from the many (eight we were told) cats that roam around. The room was very comfortable and romantic as always but chilly as the doors leading out to the balcony are old and in need of updating with newer weatherproof ones. The toilet dripping constantly was annoying but nothing to complain about but the breakfast area was cold and crammed with the door being left open so that the cats could come and go and stepping in their poop on the floor wasn't the start of how breakfast that was always our shining start of the day should be. All in all, much has decreased with the Seascape much to our regret.

They almost always tend to show more empathy and respect than chains or corporate conglomerates. Unfortunately this business also has a policy and it's to show zero respect for its customers. When the event you are traveling for is canceled due to 60 mph wind and the coastal flooding and torrential rain that accompanies a serious tropical storm, they're not even apologetic about taking your money for a service they don't render to you. It's one thing to have a policy, it's another to hide behind it to exploit someone else. I've never anywhere else seen a deposit required for a one-night stay (note to owners, a deposit is by definition something you get back). Had I booked a room at HGI Express like I was initially planning to, I wouldn't have had to discover that yet another "small business" turns out to be just as greedy as anyone else. I hope other customers are wary that you will be charged whether or not you actually stay in this hotel no matter what extenuating circumstances prevent you from doing so.
