Room was clean, BB in need of upkeep. Recommended sign to warn of slight drop step in entrance. 2 guest almost fell. Sign and porch is indicative of the state of this BB. Even though I'm a native Islander, I recently (two weeks ago) stayed at "The Harbor House" ,with my mother, to recover from surgery. Molly and Meryvn (The owners) are wonderful!! Very accomadating, sweet, and helpful. Originally our room was booked on the 3rd floor, and with back surgery (huge no-no!!) they had no problem changing it 1,2,3. One night with all of the rain we had it get really chilly, but, it's June, so the heat had already been turned off. Mervyn was kind enough to bring up a space heater for my mother. The views are wonderful, as you are right across the street from the bay. You can see it every night, as you go to sleep, and every morning as you eat breakfast together downstairs at the contential breakfast. This was something, I loved. Family style breakfast, (not gourmet, but, nice.) with the other guests where you learn some interesting stories about other peoples lives, travels, and why they're in NYC. The Rooms were turned down daily, and the bed comfy. No phone in the room though, no cable either. There was Wi-Fi access. To your right is the Alice Austen House which is a landmark/historical site and definitely worth checking out. You're also right by the buses, and about 10-15 minutes from the ferry. read more

If you want the Ritz Carlton, look elsewhere, if you want a reasonably priced, clean and comfortable place to stay while you explore NYC, this is one of the best as far as I can tell. There is easy access to nearby groceries and coffee shops, restaurants and delis. Uber's are regular and the harbor master can get you a taxi asap. The night time view of the city skyline is gorgeous, the air is crisp and the feel is pure americana. It's an old house, don't get me wrong, some things work, others don't, but it's comfortable and feels just right. The harbor master that runs the place is an absolute delight and he will sort you out, all you need do is ask. He knows the ins and outs of the NYC area and can point you to curry, shopping or the best views that you could want. When I mentioned the room was too hot, he brought a fan, when i needed to use the stove, he got the gas going. The continental breakfast isn't fancy, but its everything you need from your first meal of the day. Breads, cereals, cheese, fruit, coffee, tea and sugar. If there is something you would like that isn't there, let the harbor master know and he will sort you for the next morning. Also, eating breakfast while looking at Manhattan over the ocean whilst the ferries go back and forth is just fantastic. One thing to note, if you are coming to Staten Island from the Caribbean, just come here, don't worry about why, just come here, when you do and you speak to him, you will understand why and he will make you feel at ease, like a home away from home. For those coming from warmer climates, please walk with neck scarves or throat warmers and use them while sleeping. I underestimated how cold it got here, especially at night and got a bad cold. My young daughter was treated quite badly by the owner/manager Mohammed. I know he has received many stars, but I can tell you first hand that he is rude and use and uses very threatening language. The first two days that my daughter from Costa Rica stayed there, she told me that he was nice but that slowly deteriorated for no reason. On my daughter's last day, she called Uber. She had two very heavy suitcases, Mr Mohammed, the nice guy, did not help her or even atempt to. when I saw her at the airport I couldn't believe that a man that bragged about his daughters would be so indifferent to mine. I called him and asked why he didn't help her mentioned some back problem. In disgusted, in hung up the phone, this unprofessional B&B manager/owner immediately called me back and made the most ridiculous statement that it was my daughter's fault because she didn't ask for help. I then asked Mohammed, didn't you see her struggling with the suitcases? He said yes!! I said what kind of customer service is that? How would you like your daughter to be treated like that? My fiance and I stayed here this fall when the weather was still pleasant during the day but a little chilly at night. The house itself is very cute, and the views from the rooms are very nice to be sure. The neighborhood in itself is not that great... not too much to do in the area and the storefronts look like they could use a pick-me-up, but it is close to the bus on Bay St. and not too far from the Clifton St. SIRR stop. I also was very appreciative of Moe who is very nice and gave us some great recommendations on local places to eat (Bayou and Bin 5 are both excellent). We were given a set of keys--one for our room and one for the front door, so we could come and go as we pleased. However, from our experience, the rooms are small and extremely run-down. Our TV did not work (it turned on, but we were unable to get the Verizon service to work), and the furniture, bed, sheets, and carpet could use some real updating/upgrading. The drapery appears to be original to the house, and they don't really cover the windows completely AT ALL, meaning that the sunlight shone right through each morning as our room was facing east. The bathroom was small, but it worked. Unfortunately the door to the bathroom doesn't fully close as it isn't a "true" door with a lockset that'll actually hold the door closed. Our room was also facing the front of the house facing Hylan Blvd., where there is a nice area with some benches so people can hang out and enjoy the view, which is FINE but not at 2 in the morning, especially if you can't keep quiet. While I was trying to sleep, I heard people yelling, car alarms going off, some annoying loud beeping noise going off at intervals. If anything, you definitely ought to bring earplugs (and an eye mask) if you decide to stay here. There was a small working A/C window unit for our use, which we did to help drown out the The breakfast also left much to be desired. I thought NY bagels were supposed to be the best!? These bagels were... subpar. There was only the option of plain white bagels and plain white toast, corn flakes, instant oatmeal, and some basic fruit (bananas/oranges) along with coffee, milk, instant hot chocolate, or tea. There was also some orange juice and, we were told, yogurt on Saturday when we came down for breakfast a bit later. I would have liked the option for wheat toast/bagels at the very least... They do have a toaster and microwave there for your use, but still. Again, super nice people operating this bed & breakfast that has great views of Manhattan and the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, but in terms of a comfortable stay, I would definitely opt to pay more to stay at another place next time. read more

Stayed here 4th of July weekend with my husband. On arrival, we found the proprietor to be quite pleasant. It's a budget place, so don't expect a luxurious, high-end experience...but the view of the harbor, and Manhattan in the distance, from the front rooms and porch is amazing. Location is everything---we easily took the ferry over to Manhattan, a fun experience. There's also a park right next door. In regards to our third floor room, the bed was quite comfy, and the sheets were nicer than I expected. Window AC unit did the job. Shared bathroom per floor, which was decently clean. Breakfast was minimal (cereals, oatmeal packets, packaged bagels coffee and juice), but hey! You're in NY. Go to Royal Crown Bakery a few miles away on Hylan Ave for a real treat. I stayed at the Harbor House this last October 2013. The house was great there were some upgrades going on but they didn't effect my stay i was schedule for the third floor, but don to physical limitations i couldn't stay in that room. Everyone as so accommodating - they put me in the ground floor in a fabulous room. the house has a great view of the Manhattan skyline and has a nice area all with benches to sit and enjoy the afternoon, They were great in recommendations of restaurants and i was not disappointed. Public transportation was only two blocks away and the ferry was easy access. I could take evening walks and enjoy the peace an quite along with views. I had no problem with noise at night. I would recommend this B&B to anyone - i don't think they will be disappointed. read more

We stumbled across this bed and breakfast during our planning stages of a budget getaway. Being familiar with Staten Island we knew the location was ideal and that the views would be incredible, especially at night. After reading some (but not all) reviews on 2 travel websites I pretty much knew not to expect luxury, modern accommodations, or a gourmet breakfast. With that being known I was perfectly ok with that after all this was a budget getaway and the majority of our budget was designated for doing things in the city so our accommodations just needed to be clean and convenient. I called with credit card in hand to make reservations as I first wanted to inquire about bed bugs. We travel often and have had some negative experiences with these little critters so inquiring about a potential infestation everywhere we lay our heads is standard for us. I'm assuming it was the owner I spoke to as he was friendly until that point. He said "you do know you're coming to NYC right? With a lot of people" of course I do, even more reason for concern as bed bugs are at their worst in big cities. When I explained that this is something I always ask and that it's common in big cities he said "do you think I would tell you"? Awkward silence followed. I had to gather my thoughts as I was stunned by his rude response. When I told him that people actually do respond truthfully and I would expect that from an honest innkeeper he proceeded to tell me about his reviews; but didn't say if they were good or bad (actually are mixed due to condition of rooms). He mentioned that he had reviews on TripAdvisor and that I should look at them closely. I told him I did see the reviews which is why I was calling for reservations but he refused to take them till I went back and read them again. Another awkward silence followed before the end of the call. I was shocked! Thinking that maybe there was some mention of bed bugs I went back and read a few more reviews (again not all of them) as well as checked the Bed Bug Registry for hints of a problem (note: there was a good bit of known bed bug infestations nearby but not at this address). I have no idea why he responded the way he did but budget or not his response did not entice me to book there. For the life of me I don't understand why someone in the bed and breakfast/hotel business would respond in such a negative matter to a situation they don't even have. I would think in this day and age having people ask is not that unusual. We've been asking for years (and we travel quite a bit) and his response and one a few weeks ago were the first proprietors to take offense to this. I just don't get it. Makes me wonder what is in the reviews that I didn't read, but at this point who really cares? read more

I write this review as a warning to women traveling alone who are considering staying here. I made reservations to stay here when I was going up to Staten Island by myself for one one night. I had called about a week before my trip and spoken with the proprietor on the phone to make the reservations. A few days later, I went out with friends and was driving home at just before midnight when my phone rang. I recognized the Staten Island exchange as I had been calling a few establishments looking for a reservation. I picked up the phone and said, "Hello". There was silence on the other end, so I repeated, "Hello?" and this time a man's voice answered and said, "Hi. What's up." I was confused and said, "Who is this? Why did you call me." The man on the other end then said that he hadn't called me, and that I had just called him. It threw me for a minute but I said, "No, you just called me. Who is this?" I recognized the voice as the same voice as the man who had taken my reservation. I asked him straight out, "Is this the Harbor House? Are you the manager of the Harbor House?" He continued to insist that I had called him and would not say who he was. I finally hung up on him. I was very upset and shaking. When I got home, I double checked to see the number which was indeed from the Harbor House and was indeed an incoming call. I called the next day and demanded a refund and told him that I knew that he had called me and that I could no longer stay at his hotel. He continued to deny it and then became nasty and aggressive and accused me of making up a crazy story to get out of my reservation. I assured him that I knew that he was lying and that I was very disappointed and disturbed and that he had messed up my plans by his behavior. He continued to deny it and be nasty until I told him that, if he didn't refund my money, I would review his place on every online site. Ultimately, he did send me a refund and I did end up getting to make the trip to SI. It has taken me over a year to post this as he did refund the money. However, as I reflect on it, I realize that I don't owe the creep anything and instead owe it to other women to post about this disturbing interaction. I shudder to think what could have happened had I ended up traveling alone and staying at his hotel while he had a key to my room. read more

This was our first time to visit New York. My husband found the Harbor House bed-and-breakfast online. We were impressed with the character and location of the house. Moe was very accommodating to our needs and very friendly. The view from our room was great. We could see the Statue of Liberty as well as New York City and New Jersey across the water. Public transportation was only a 5 minute walk away and we felt comfortable in the neighborhood. The heaters were quite noisy at night, but we got used to it by the third night and could sleep through the noise. There's no way we could have gotten such a good deal for lodging anywhere in Manhattan, definitely a good value. read more

Moe is absolutely wonderful and a great host. He is present when needed and you call him if he is not on site if needed. He does not impeded or intrude on your privacy but is nice and approachable if you have questions about the area or just to chat. With as many rooms as there are, all the guests were respectful and mindful in terms of noise level and there was never an issue with hearing people in other rooms while in mine. The price is very affordable and there are a handful of restaurants and delis near by that you can easily walk to. The view itself is gorgeous and literally a breath of fresh air. I was concerned about it being too far away from manhattan but with a free ferry that runs 24/7 nearby it was not a problem at all and of course unbeatable for the cost! The rooms are not up to date and modern but I actually enjoyed that more as I felt a sense of warmth and feeling at home. I was concerned sharing bathrooms was going to be irritating which is why I wanted to avoid a bed and breakfast or hostile type place but there was never a problem there either. My brother, nephew, husband & I stayed here this past Friday - Monday and it was wonderful! We used to live in NYC and my husband is a native New Yorker, so my brother & nephew asked us for a personal tour of NYC. And this was the perfect place to stay. It's quiet, has a wonderful porch, a park is next door, and it's on NY Harbor, so there are wonderful views. We even saw a freighter turn around. It's only a few minutes to the Staten Island Ferry and then you are in the most exciting city in the world! My husband and I stayed in the Manhattan room and loved it! The bed was comfortable, the bathroom was good, and the view was phenomenal! We will stay there again next time we are in the city. Initially my brother and nephew had the Madison room. When I booked the reservation, it had a bunk bed and a sink. When we arrived, the bunk bed had been replaced by a double bed. It was a tight fit for them. The Mr. Moe attempted to rectify the situation, but the first solution didn't work out well. But the next day when a better room was available, the he gave it to my brother & nephew. The room they were given was the Verrazano room! The best room! They were so happy! And the rates! You can't beat the rates! Best in NYC, unless you want to stay in a hostel or flop house!!! Next time we go to NYC, (assuming we don't stay with friends), this is where we will stay! read more

I forgot to mention 1 night I even stayed in the 1st floor room which was ACTUALLY AN APARTMENT. He charged me the reg price he was charging because the other rooms were not available. Like I said below owner told me if he & I knew I was coming back he would of made a special for me. This apartment room featured 2 nice size beds I think they were fulls. A kitchen with oven,stove,microwave, bathroom, etc. So if interested, this room is ideal. & It is very large as well. *Owner was so kind & hospatle(if that's a word lol) he even offered me a deal since I stayed their for a few nights, I did not take it cause I wasn't sure how long I was staying. But he continued to lower the prices for me each night. The first night he even gave me one of the better rooms that is usually more expensive, but he did not charge me that price, with the perfect view of the peer, & personal bathroom w/ shower. He said if he knew I was coming back he would of held that room for me. I highly recommend this place. More affordable than any other hotel (besides maybe the roach motel near ferry). & it is the hotel you want to be at. Alice auston house as its neighbor, beautiful views inside & out. You can walk around feel the breeze enjoy sitting on benches right across the street or explore the area. Short walk up to bay street & hylan blvd where all the stores are. Or if your too tired just call some food for delivery the owner keeps some deliverg friwndly menus near the entrance. Friendly & kind owner. Breakfast included left on the table near entrance, usually included hot water for tea or oatmeal. Bananas. Coffee. Bagels. 5 stars all around thank you for your hospitality sorry I did not write review sooner. Rooms are spacious, the one smaller room I had Did have 2 spacious closets & although that room didn't have its own personal bathroom it did have its own personal sink. This is the best hotel you are going to find in Staten island. And for the price, you won't find a better place this cheap in NYC. House is beautiful inside as well very well kept & antique furniture is also well kept. I did not see a single bug inside either. read more

Harbor House is a quiet retreat, with a magnificent view. I would recommend this place. The view of the harbor and skyline is wonderful. The rooms are pleasant with a home feel. This was our first trip to New York. Harbor House was a few minutes away from the train and Staten Island ferry, then we were in Manhattan - WOW. Harbor House was pleasantly quiet after a day in the City. Moe was more than helpful. We booked a room with a bunk bed, so my son and I could stay in the same room, The bunk bed had been removed just before we got there (I understood it had gotten damaged). We stayed one night in that room with a double bed, then Moe gave us a great room with a queen bed and a private bath. Every accommodation and kindness was shown to fix our room issue. My wife and I stayed at Harbor House Bed and Breakfast in May 2017 and have enjoyed staying here for the past several years. Some friends have asked why stay at a Bed and Breakfast on Staten Island when chances are that you'll be spending most of your leisure time either in Manhattan or Brooklyn? There are several reasons why we enjoy staying here. First of all, you have the most fantastic view of New York Harbor including the Verrazano Bridge and the New York City skyline. The waves rolling onto Buono Beach just across Edgewater Street from Harbor House help you fall asleep at night. Secondly, the rates here are quite reasonable when compared with what you would be paying to stay on Manhattan. We also enjoy staying in a real New York City neighborhood rather than in some glitzy joint in Midtown Manhattan. One of the pleasures of staying at Harbor House are the morning conversations at the breakfast table with guests who come here from all over the world (we have meet visitors from Germany, The Netherlands, and even Russia here). Breakfasts give you enough nourishment (cereal, bagels, bread, fruit, juice, coffee) to get you off to a good running start in the mornings. Moe Mohammad is the innkeeper at Harbor House. He is friendly, knowledgeable, and Harbor House's greatest resource. If something is not the way it should be, Moe will do everything he can to rectify the situation. He is always looking for ways to improve Harbor House and, at the same time, he works hard to make his guests feel comfortable and welcome. Some people reading this might wonder how one gets to Manhattan. It is a simple matter of taking the S51 bus, which runs along Bay Street, a couple of blocks from the B & B. ( you can easily purchase your MetroCards either from the Lucky 7 Grocery Store across the street from the bus stop, or from a check cashing place a block or two down Bay Street). Taking the Staten Island Ferry to Manhattan is a scenic and fun way to start your explorations. Another reason we like staying at Harbor House in Staten Island is that Staten Island offers some very nice restaurants at more reasonable prices that what you would generally find on Manhattan. Bin5 is just a few blocks down Bay Street and then there is our favorite restaurant in NYC, the totally unique Enoteca Maria near the Staten Island Ferry Terminal. There's also Bayou for those who enjoy Nawlins style food. We come here to Harbor House for the view, the prices, the conversations and shared experiences, and Moe's hospitality. We spent five nights at Harbor House in early September, enjoying a 6-day trip to NYC for a total of what it would have cost for a mid-range Manhattan hotel alone. HH is a pleasant B&B right on the Staten Island waterfront with a great view of the south Manhattan skyline and the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. The 120+-year Victorian is not luxe but serviceable and clean. It is very efficiently managed by Moe, who goes the extra mile to call a taxi or print a document for you and answer local transit questions. The roundtrip from and back to Staten Island every day on the ferry was a serene delight -- it's free, operates 24/7 and an easy busride from HH. Overall, if you're looking for an economical way to visit NYC, this is the way to go. read more

My husband and I stayed here for two nights while visiting family in Staten Island. We knew it would be a modest type of place to stay based on the responses we have read. The place itself is a very old house (which could be beautiful if fixed up). We had a nice room with 2 beds and a private bath. The room was kind of what we expected. The beds were not all that comfortable. The best part of the stay was the innkeeper, Moe who was soooo willing to help us in any way to make this an enjoyable stay. I think the issue is not him, but the fact that the owners need to put some upgrades to some of the basic needs in a bed and breakfast. I think this place could be a gold mine since the location is perfect. The inside accommodations need to be a higher grade than they are now. It served our purpose and we thank Moe for his hospitality. Would love to see them fix up the rooms to a little higher level than they are so that we could come back again. read more

If I could give no stars OR NEGATIVE STARS I would.. this one star is super generous and only because of yelp . First, i will start by saying, my Fiance and I didn't even get a chance to stay here, so this review is only based on the horrible customer service. We accidentally double booked our weekend, as we were both trying to surprise each other. So he calls to see if he can change the date or cancel the room. The nasty manager tells him no, we can't change the date and if we want to cancel they will STILL charge us for both nights. So, rather than have him lose the money we decide to keep the plans and go. Fast forward a few hours and we call ahead to let them know we are on our way ( as this is customary for a B&B). The nasty manager tells us, well he decided re book our room with someone else, and switch our reservation to the following weekend. No call, no email or anything... mind you we are in the car, in route to this place!! At this point, my Fiance is now seething mad! Next weekend wont work for us, how dare you tell us NO, then change it on your own to the weekend that you see fit?!?!?!? Then, the rude ass manager proceeds to tell us that he's " doing us a favor because he didn't have to move it, he could have just kept our money".. UMM EXCUSE ME!!! The nerve of this place! First off this place looks like an absolute DUMP, it needs to be renovated, new bedding and a good hazmat suit to give it a scrub down!! The ONLY reasons we were even entertaining this place was because the Victorian house was sold out and the the views The Harbor House provides. Oh but it gets better...so as we are having this back and forth over the phone..nasty manager starts to raise his voice at me. I tell him , as calmly as possible, not to raise his voice as I am a woman, and i'm not disrespecting you. This JERK tells me " if you don't like it have your husband call me" and hangs up the phone!!! So not only did he TAKE OUR MONEY, give away our room and then re book us for the following weekend WITHOUT our consent, he adds insult to injury by disrespecting me over the phone and hanging up on me!! I have NEVER been so disrespected and treated so disgustingly by any establishment or company and its insane that there is no one to report his behavior!! I will advise EVERYONE to stay away from this place by all accounts. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME MONEY OR GAS ON THIS PLACE. read more
