Listen people, if you like REAL food, good brew, and a great sense of community stay here. The neighborhood is great. If you are uptight or want fine dining everynight, I'm sure there is somewhere in Manhattan that can suite you (which by the way is easily accessible from here). Brooklynites are great, i love the diversity. Similiar to the diversity here in Seattle. We stayed in The Vanderbuilt. Beautiful apt, everything we needed, and had tons of charm. The room was clean, and bright. We had 3 large windows in our room facing the garden, which is great because I love having natural light. For people complaining about walking too much, your in NY hello?! New York is a walking city, and really in comparison to Seattle which has tons of hills, New York is easily walkable. The way you are going to experience the real New York is to walk, ride trains, and eat local food. But really the subway is a five minute walk away...we used the Q train to get into city. Anyway I couldn't ask for a better place in Brooklyn. We loved it, and hope to come back soon. Easy walk to restaurants, BAM, and parks. We walked to the Brooklyn Promenade nearby. Great view of the city and Brooklyn bridge. Only downside, we have kids, and unfortunetly so kids allowed (mine are 3 and 7). Bummer is next time we go to NY we will want to bring kids. First off, I was impressed with how friendly Mark was about the area, as well as how knowledgeable. Because of this, and because the room was pretty nice, I'm torn between 2 and 3 stars. I'm going with 2 because of the breakfast situation. I stayed in the O'Neal room with my friend while I was in town from the West Coast for a wedding, and was impressed with how spacious the room was. It was tastefully decorated. No tv, phone, or clock. There was air conditioning--and since it was 90 degrees outside AND I'm a wuss from the Pacific Northwest, I was super excited about this. The two single beds were decent. The shared bathroom was clean and HUGE (possibly the size of my last studio apartment!). There was plenty of hot water with decent pressure. I was not impressed with the IKEA towels, nor the plastic shower curtain taped to the shower walls (what was with that?? until condensation built up, it kept floating up and sticking to my legs: not my favorite sensation). I had looked all over the place for an affordable place to stay over the 4th of July weekend: impossible in NYC!! Prices went up by at least $10 a person at any hotel, and this was no exception. In spite of this, this place was the most affordable and closest to Prospect Park, where the wedding was. However, when there was a possibility that a third person might stay with us--we were told that it would have been another $50/night for them to sleep on the floor. This seemed very excessive, so the friend opted to go elsewhere. Also, the term "Bed & Breakfast" is apparently relative, and dependent on the day. You have to pay an extra $10/day for breakfast (IMO, breakfast should be included for a B&B), and let them know the night before--it's also served when they get moving, not on your schedule. I tried for breakfast the first day, but was told there was no luck as I would've been the only taker. This SUCKED, as there is no real breakfast place within reasonable walking distance. There is a decent coffee shop with pastries about 3 blocks away, but this I discovered on my own, much later in the day. The second day, after my friend arrived, I did score breakfast, which was delicious--fritatta accompanied by fruit, rolls, and collard greens. Totally worth $10. Now, if only you could count on it. Now that I'm typing, I just remembered this incident, which was weird. I'd come home in the middle of the day to rest up before wedding festivities (like I said, it was HOT!!), and heard Mark knock on the room next to mine, and then, when nobody answered, heard him show the room to somebody. I don't know if they were thinking about renting long-term or what. He then knocked on mine, and then apologized for disturbing me when I answered and moved on. Was he going to show my room, with all of our stuff in it, to some random person if I hadn't been there??? I was totally not cool with that. Though it was advertised as such, this place is not really convenient to anywhere. Another friend and I had to walk about an hour to find a drink--not bad, but not what we bargained for. If you like roti, bad Indian or thai food, you're in luck. Otherwise, you're better off taking the subway to Manhattan, of which a convenient stop is not too far away. In total, if you're looking for an affordable, basic, but nice place to stay for no more than 2 people, and don't plan on eating or doing much within walking distance, this will work beautifully for you. THE GOOD: My bf and I were searching for a place to stay in NYC for a few days that didn't cost $400 a night. We found Lefferts on tripadvisor and booked the room knowing very little about the place. When we arrived I was thrown off that no one was there to greet us but it was fine bc to be honest I'm a little anti-social. We met Mark once and he was doing paperwork. It was brief! He seemed really nice and laid back. However even though we paid, I kinda felt like Goldilocks...breaking into someones house and sleeping in their bed. We settled into our room which was the Fitzgerald room. Super spacious, beautiful crown molding, big bed, and a/c (it was humid as hell out). The home in general was beautiful and had a lot of character. I loved the chandelier and the layout. It felt homey. I've never stayed at a B&B and was dreading the concept of sharing a bathroom with other travelers. Thankfully we were the only people renting on our floor the first two days so it worked out! But it went south the last day which I can explain later. We met some other people staying on the top floor and they were really kind. We found the place to be slightly inconvenient for traveling on the train but then again we didn't totally know where we were going and were at he mercy of GoogleMaps which took us to 4 different stops on separate outtings. The neighborhood was definitely diverse so don't think you're gonna be walking around window shopping at Prada and Gucci. It's BROOKYLN! We found two great places for breakfast and dinner near by which was great! THE BAD: The only reason we took away one star was not really Lefferts fault...but the business of a B&B and sharing space. Our second night we got in really late around 4 am. I ran upstairs to throw my bag down and walked down the hall to pee. I saw a dark shadowy figure on the toilet and heard a shriek! I immediately slammed the door and ran to my room. The room next door had been filled while we were gone which is fine! But the woman staying next door refused to lock the bathroom door or turn on the light when she was in the bathroom. So if I needed to use it I wasnt sure if she was in there. I'd knock and wait and she wouldnt say anything and then when I'd try to open the door she's barely whisper "I'm in here". It was creepy! lol She also spent so much time in the bathroom. Literally every time I needed to pee or shower she was in the bathroom. She even had laid out all her products, towels, toothbrush, hair brush all over the bathroom and left her dirty wet wash clothes on top of the laundry basket. It felt kinda gross like I was in her home. Stuff like that skeeves me out! Also the toilet had a lot of issues like running and clogging. But then again it's a B&B. Next time I'd stay in a room that had a private bath. read more

Never got to actually stay here. I sent my girlfriend to scout it out for a staycation. I am an admitted workaholic so we local things all the time. We frequently stay at five star hotels mostly in Manhattan.But since she lives in Brooklyn We wanted to explore something close to her home and not far from my Penn Station office. She was rudely told by some dolt that they dont they do tours. OK i get that ,but there is a way to communicate that without being impolite and offensive. When i made calls to the place during normal business hours the phone went straight to voice mail. By contrast i called another nearby establishment and got a live pleasant person. i will spend my money there. read more

This place is wonderful. It is near Prospect Park and the subway so very accessible. The proprietor is full of energy and service - he even arranged for a car service to pick us up at the airport. The breakfast is inexpensive and well done. The rooms are fine. But I come back to Mark, which several other reviews mentioned - Mark goes out of his way to figure out how to improve your stay - helping you figure out how to negotiate New York. We got some ideas about how to spend our free day - which were better than I have gotten when I have stayed in much more expensive hotels. He is helpful without being intrusive. One more comment of his kind of attentiveness. You sign up for breakfast each night and one morning we did not sign up- he texted us in the morning and said "do you want breakfast?" We said "no" but got a note back suggesting that the long day that was ahead of us - we were going to a wedding at City Hall - might be better if we had breakfast. He was right. I am not a fan of New York City - when I was doing a lot of business there I often tried to avoid it. But Mark made the visit fun. Note the Free WIFI was good and available. The Common Areas were comfortable. I am not sure about the reviews that are negative - it did not sound like the place we stayed. Obviously people are different but from our stay of four days - it was (as I said at the beginning) wonderful. read more

We stayed at a wonderfully furnished new apartment rental on Washington Park Ave (across the street from Forte Greene park!) with a full kitchen and dining room. I can't say enough good things about Mark - he was the perfect host, and we truly felt like Brooklyn residents during our stay. The neighborhood itself is charming -- amazing french and african food around the corner, wine shops, BAM, Mark Morris Dancer Center, the Forte Greene flea market on Saturdays, and the Forte Greene Farmer's Market on Sundays at the park. Traveler's note: we found that the G train completely sucked (the Ghost train?) at the Fulton street station, and that it was far easier to walk a couple of extra blocks to the Atlantic station where you could catch anything. I'm in love. I stayed at Leffert's for the NYC runs brrrroklyn half marathon on 1/25. The location to prospect park is unbelievable. My room was small but comfortable. Down-feeling comforter on the bed, soft pillows... I was out like a light when I hit the bed. They provided trader joe's bath products in the bathroom. Though there is 1 shared bathroom per floor, I didn't have any waiting to use it or anyone else's messes to deal with. Very clean. Mark was very very accommodating. Can't wait for my next race in Brooklyn so I can stay here again. Highly recommend!!!! read more

Excellent place to stay if you are Manhattan or Brooklyn bound. The price is right and the rooms are clean, comfortable and quiet. Walking distance to Prospect Park and subway with direct trains to midtown Manhattan. Good breakfast and plenty of eateries nearby, too. Nice, helpful hosts - they'll make sure you don't get lost on the way to and from the airport and all your sightseeing adventures! No TV or radio in the room, but who needs it? You've got a smart phone - use it. October 2012 - my second visit to Lefferts Manor and even better than the first! Mark, the host, is so cordial and helpful to all guests. I loved being back in "my" room, the McManus room. How about a visit to NY where you can wake up to the sound of birds singing in the autumn colored trees outside your window? Radios have been added to the rooms - I enjoyed listening to classical music when I wasn't listening to birds or scooting around visiting all the well-recommended sites of Brooklyn and NY. Stay here, be comfortable, and for less than half the cost of a midtown hotel room. read more

I was extremely disappointed in Lefferts Manor. It was nothing but a room to sleep, no character, not a warm and fuzzy place. The bed was comfortable, the building was clean, but very run down, and absolutely no amenities. Guests are expected to go to their rooms, behind locked doors. I was sold the idea of a nice breakfast to find out on my arrival that they really discourage preparing breakfast for anyone. Four night stay no breakfast and really no where in the area to eat, other than a small coffee shop near the Metro stop. The area has nothing to offer. No corner store or shops that I wanted to frequent. Would not recommend. The proprietors were nice and friendly but I'd except more from a B&B other than just a bed and a bathroom. read more

Shared bathrooms are a nightmare especially if you are staying with guests who hog the bathroom. And there's no AC here at least if you're staying in the McManus room. No free breakfast or tv. The bathing accommodations are subpar. Besides the bar of soap they leave with you, the shampoo are shared. You're just paying for the aesthetics. It's just better for you to pick a hotel instead that has AC and free breakfast for the same price or a little bit more expensive. Or if you're just looking for a place to sleep in then I'd say it's only ok. read more

My room was very comfortable, clean and quiet. I like the environment so much better than a hotel. The subway stop is close. Brooklyn Museum and Botanical Gardens are one stop away. The host is very warm and friendly. I will come here again. read more

Perfect. We stayed in the other building round the corner in Fennimore St, and I have no complaints. Beautiful original building with period features, original stain glass, intricate wooden floor inlays, rickety old windows and shutters... Much character. We stayed in the Rose Room (the bigger of the two rooms in the building, but the Blue Room is also really nice) which almost felt like a suite. The bathroom is shared between the two rooms so maybe that's why they don't provide a bath plug- I think they don't want guests taking up the only bathroom (& toilet) for long periods. Mark the manager was great, and we could store our baggage after check out. Bed was on the softer side but not too much... Soft white cotton linen. I'm coming back next time I'm in the BK. read more

On short notice, Mark the Innkeeper at Lefferts gave me a great room at a incredibly great price. I hunted for Manhattan accommodations and found them over priced for about a square inch of space. So, I crossed over to Brooklyn which was the smart thing to do. The subway is a short walk from the B&B and the Q express train takes you directly into the city in a matter of 20 minutes. Mark is the best! Here's a list of just some of things he did for me: made arrangements for a car to pick me up at the airport (from the airport to Lefferts is just 1/2 hour by car), had breakfast ready for me, check in time isn't till 1pm or so, but I got my room at 10:30a.m. after a long red eye flight from SF; he gave me an orientation of the neighborhood--restaurants (take the Q to 7th Ave in Brooklyn and there are tons of great restaurants!), stores, subway, directions to various places, car service, he has a ton of books on poetry and shared them with me, he was just great~~no doubt the most gracious and helpful host I've ever come across in my travels, he always treated his guest with the upmost respect and at the same time has a great sense of humor and makes everyone feel at home. My room was gorgeous, twins beds, hardwood floors, beautiful old furniture, lots of natural light, beautiful scenery out the windows, all green and lush. I was in the O'Neal room next to the other gorgeous Fitzgerald room, which no one occupied while I was there, so I had the bathroom all to my self--great shower too! I definitely recommend this beaurtiful brownstone B&B. Between the aesthetic beauty of the building/home, and Mark's awesome-good energy, you can't go wrong at Lefferts! read more

i picked this B and B blindly because of the reasonable price and their willingness to accomodate extra people in the rooms. We had a great experience! Mark and Moni are wonderful hosts, the breakfasts are well worth the extra fee, and we felt very safe and comfortable in their home. The subway is a short walk, with easy access to Manhattan. The home is very old, so expect to see some needed repairs in progress. Our rooms, linens and bathrooms were spotless. I'll be back! read more

We stayed in one of the Fort Greene apartments. The apartment was beautiful and had everything we needed, including a full kitchen! The location could not have been better for us, with easy access to Manhattan and the rest of Brooklyn. Despite the heat wave during our stay, the air conditioned apartment was a perfect refuge. Mark was super friendly and knowledgable about the area, and was extremely attentive despite the fact that we were not at the bed and breakfast, checking in on us through email, which was my preferred method of communication. Our stay at the Lefferts Manor Bed and Breakfast was perfect. Mark and Moni are very special people. The minute that I spoke to Mark over the phone I knew our stay would be Special. Mark had invited us to a neighbourhood party that was so unique for us to meet locals. They were all very interesting, friendly and welcoming people. The rooms are perfect, it's always clean, shower is great. The area is fine, we found a great Mexican breakfast place near the subway that was excellent. The house is charming and very comfortable. Well the website and pictures of Lefferts manor look really charming, but it looks like I will never get a chance to find out what it's like to stay there. I've left Mark at least four voicemail messages and have also sent an email via their website to inquire about a booking in December, and he has not gotten back to me ever. I can't rave enough about the lovely accommodations provided by Mark Osborne. My husband and I stayed in the Washington Suite at the Fort Greene apartments in November 2011 for our honeymoon. We stayed for nine days, and each one was glorious. First of all, after a long bus ride from Boston, then a long subway ride to Brooklyn, we were enthusiastically greeted by our host who proceeded to help us with our bags up the stairs, then give us a very thorough orientation regarding the neighborhood restaurants, services, and subway lines. He was absolutely terrific. He even went above and beyond the call of duty by providing us with (at our request) room darkening blinds (handsome wood ones) and a microwave, to supplement the coffee maker, teapot heater, and fridge that the room already comes with. The room itself was gorgeous, soft colors and tastefully decorated (no dolls or potporri)...big comfy brass bed with the best mattress I've ever slept on, a marble fireplace, a wing chair, a desk, a bureau, and linen closets...with an adjacent room with a daybed, a little table and two chairs, and the above mentioned appliances, all CLEAN AS A WHISTLE! No dust, no bugs (bed or otherwise), no dirt. There was nothing better than lazily waking up in the morning to our Fall season view of Washington Park, making our coffee, and watching all the people walking their various breed of dogs across the street. We didn't miss television or computer. We brought a small transistor radio with us and the first radio station we found was a great NY jazz station...that seemed to provide the best background music for the lovely New York park scene we watched every morning. Really...this place is the deal of the century...and so convenient to everything. Staying in Brooklyn opened our eyes to a whole different side of NY, and we loved walking the various neighborhoods in the morning en route to our Manhattan destinations. Often we returned to Brooklyn for dinner as there were so many funky and great restaurants right around the corner from our room. Lefferts Manor exceeded our expectations...truly!
