Mt Macedon is a wonderful part of the world and it really deserves a great cafe and restaurants. I…read morehad seen some photos of the Trading Post and was intrigued by the eclectic country general store feel to the place. The building and location certainly have a lot of character and you can sit out the front on the deck, down the side under the trees or inside if you want to stay warm. The menu is simple, mostly pies, quiches and a simple specials board with a soup of the day and items like lasagne with salad. This is all boding well so far, but unfortunately the Trading Post is let down by very slow counter service when you order, reheated food not always warmed right through, some wonky furniture and a chaotic layout. This will be a hit and miss experience. Good some days and annoying on others. We had a bit of both.

The waitress couldn't remember the order of the cakes (because she didn't write it down, ) we were bought a cappuccino and espresso (because she didn't write it down) the coffee was cold and burnt (I have to congratulate you on that one, don't know how you managed that). All of we were happy to ignore, but then came our rude side when we had the nerve to ask for some water. The waitress (you know the one, she never wrote down our order but got it wrong) rolled her eyes and threw the tin basket she was carrying on the bench behind us and stormed through the cafe to get our water dumped the water and the glasses on the table. Now yes it was extremely rude of us to ask for water and we should apologize for asking for such a bizarre and hard to perform task. FYI: The cakes were actually very nice (warmer than the coffee)

Summary: 4.2. Very good contemporary Melbourne cafe. Equal to many or most highly rated places…read more Food, coffee and service are all excellent. Simplicity is the key here. Everything is done well. Nothing is over complicated. Review: The cafe is on the north side of lower Heidelberg road. It's a pleasantly laid out establishment. There are nice wood featured chairs and tables throughout. A wood covered front counter as well. Brick walls throughout too with one small tiled wall. There's a reasonable distance between tables. Nice lighting is also featured. Conventional music playing on the sound system, a bit prosaic for me but I could have just scored the wrong rotated playlist. Maybe needs something a little softer. Overall the space has a nice warm cozy feel that was very likable . I scored a pleasant greeting on arrival. It was hard not to notice the manager and staff interacting well with patrons, which enhanced the nice feel of the cafe. I had a beautiful coffee first off which came out quickly after I ordered it. It was a rich, dark, well made brew with impressive length. No half measures were taken on this long black. It was a beauty. The food is the key though, eh. It's a smallish menu here for all day breakfast and lunch. I found that an advantage as too many menu items can befuddle a simple soul like me. Nothing was overcomplicated and this menu offered ample choice I thought. I ordered the curds and beets dish off the lunch menu. This consists of goats cheese croquettes, heirloom baby beets, beetroot pesto and a frisée salad. It's a rustic looking dish but wonderfully so. It made for a gorgeous lunch that gave me all the freshness, health and flavour I was after when I walked in. The goats cheese croquettes were soft, delicate and exquisitely flavoured. They were really lovely. The heirloom beets of various kinds were excellent too. Tasty with just the right amount of give. Lovely greens with a good dressing as well. The side of peas and broad beans was really delicious too. I could barely fault these dishes which were very good. Maybe a tiny bit more seasoning on both dishes, although maybe many people want to control this themselves. I found myself preferring this cafe to a few of those in the inner north. The concentration here is on substance not style. I thoroughly enjoyed the cafe which has only been open a few months. Based on this experience, it will do very well indeed.

The menu is limited but often changes, today I had the burrito and I'll be coming back again for another serve. The decor is funky and hip and all things cool, the seating is a mixture of long tables where you share with others or small traditional cafe tables and chairs. I enjoy watching and smelling the cooking that goes on, it's like being in a kitchen at times. My only draw back and the reason for not giving this place 5 stars, is the coffee. I tried it once and could barely finish it. So I now avoid it and go for a chai latte instead.

We waited for 1hr and it still hadn't appeared, after asking the waitress to find out where it was she said that the docket hadn't been sent to the kitchen.. waited another 15 minutes for it. To be fair it tasted ok but at $17 I feel that it was overpriced. I won't be going back
