It's hard to trust mechanics and auto repair personel. What with the number of times I've been taken for a "ride," I believe it's generally warranted. So when I arrived to the professional and friendly staff, well, I could barely believe it. It's not fancy, but they have their routine nailed: -Offer you a paper (National Post/Vancouver Sun) and a coffee or a tea -Introduce themselves (I had a very nice guy who was training) -Take your contact info -Offer their selection of oil changes on a menu -Change your oil (that's what you're paying for afterall!) -Top up fluids and air -Check the lights, the signals -Grease the door hinges They also made suggestions for what filters needed to be changed. They weren't pushy about it and when I said I'd do it soon, they added comments on my invoice so I'd remember. Thank you for not trying to upsell me. You can read a lot of mixed reviews about this place below, and I will say that they are all true. If you go to this place, they are friendly, helpful, and will help you with a problem. They will check all your tires and fill them up if you drive in, and they won't charge you or try and sell you anything. I had a leak in my tire, and they did some sleuthing and showed me how it was actually a bent rim. When I brought in the rim, they told me it would be $40 to replace it. Unfortunately, the company shipped the wrong size, so they couldn't install it. However during the tire change they noticed that my tires were worn out, and they thought they looked about 5 years old based on the wear. They were shocked to learn the tires are only 1 year old, and they gave me recommendations on how to go to the place I bought them and try and get them replaced. They also didn't charge me for all the time they spent taking off the tire, putting on my spare, etc. I just came back and grabbed my car. All that being said, the stories about them being pushy with upsells and showing you dirty car pieces and letting you know you need to replace them is also true. It's easy to walk in for an oil change and walk out with a $180 bill. That happened the first time I was there. The key is that you just go for an oil change, and say no to everything else. I have a different general mechanic I use in Vancouver for regular maintenance, so if I'm concerned I bring it to them. So that's the breakdown. Not to happy with service. Normally the place isn't bad but seemed to help people in no particular order. Parked in a bay right away still took over an hour for straight oil and lube. Also had to ask to top up window wiper fluid and check tires. Had to ask for decal of next visit never got offered hard copy of receipt. UPDATE - changed my review to one star because when they yanked out my glove box to change a filter, they broke a mechanism inside and really f***ed it up. Holy smokes. This place. I will never go here again because of the intensity with which they try to upsell you. But I will give a narrative account of yesterday's service with both good and bad so you can choose for yourself! I needed an oil change before a road trip and saw the big disparity in reviews here. Some were great and others claimed that the staff tried to pressure them into paying for services they did not need. But, I know not everything is as it seems so I decided to give it a shot. I rolled up at 4:45 PM on a Sunday and was helped immediately. For efficiency purposes, they do not have you get out of your car. They told me this and then asked me if I would like some coffee or hot cocoa! And they handed me a newspaper. Off to a good start, right? I was quoted $60 all told on the phone, but even though I gave them the make, model, and year of my car, when I got there they said it was going to be at least $80 because my Toyota runs on synthetic oil. Later, they even told me it was going to be somewhere around $120 and made a big deal about giving me a cheaper oil to bring it down closer to $80. As soon as they took a look at the oil, they said it was seriously dirty and that my engine was in danger of damage. I needed an OIL FLUSH right away. I was freaked out and forgot that I had an oil change just 4000 miles ago so I agreed to the $60 service. Next, they start checking all my fluids and doing the actual oil change. There were a lot of people moving around my car very quickly. I was told that my cabin filter was filthy. It did look kind of grungy, so they "gave me a deal" on a new one for $20. On top of that, I was told my transmission fluid was on its last legs. Have you ever gotten it changed or topped off since you bought the car? I told him I was religious about getting my milestone services and that I have never missed an oil change. Oh, they said, it's a service you have to ask for. It looks like this one has never been changed. By that time I was getting really skeptical... Especially because I heard The guy in the maintenance bay beside me explaining the same thing to the woman parked there. I told him that I would hold off and check my maintenance records. To which he replied, you can do that but you may have a problem with your car. You mentioned you were just about to go on a road trip and you wouldn't want to be held up would you? After a few more minutes I was told that my rear differential fluid was nearly depleted. It would make a huge impact on my car's ability to maintain all wheel drive. He could give me a deal and change it for $80 or so. At this point I was having none of it. Although he really pushed for these additional services, I held my ground and said I will check my records and come back the next morning if need be. Finally, he told me my WIPER BLADES are falling apart and that it would be good to replace them. He could give me a one day deal of $30 per blade. Coincidentally, I had just spoken to my mom about New wiper blades and where to get them... since I bought the car from my parents (who bought it new in 2011) a few years ago. My mom said that She is able to get wiper inserts from the dealership for less than $10 and that ensures The original blades are on with no aftermarket modifications. I mentioned to the guy helping me that I was making a stop at the dealership for inserts next week and he insisted that they didn't sell them like that anymore. They only sell the blades, and his was the best deal I was going to find. Once he realized that I was not going to buy anything additional, it seemed like the work was done much slower and the technicians focused on other clients. Most notably, one guy had come over to clean my windshield. But he kind of just lazily moved a wiper across one side... Not actually cleaning anything... And then stopped as soon as he heard me pushing back. Finally, I got out of there for about $180, all told. This morning I called the dealership where I bought my car and was told transmission fluid only needs to be changed a few times over the life of the car and that mine has been inspected just in December. Oil flushes are nearly unheard of. And I would not have needed a top off or a change or a flush of my rear differential fluid. Moreover, I have gotten a complete service in March and should not have needed anything but oil... which should not have been dirty. I would be very careful about going to this place. It appears that they must be paid almost exclusively on commission. The technician who mainly helped me, Robert, was very conversational, very pushy, and completely insistent that I call next time and ask for him and make sure he was at the service center because "some guys will try to upsell you really hard." read more

Scummy, scummy experience. Came in for a basic oil change and the technician told us we needed to change our transmission fluid as it was "totally black". He also advised us not to drive the car until we did, and that the $120 service was conveniently on special today. So glad I did my own research instead of listening to this place. Turns out this was a lie, and the information he was telling us applied to automatic transmissions, where as we have a manual. Also, it would have taken him longer to check the levels in a manual, suggesting he didn't even look at the transmission fluid. I'm guessing the guy assumed we had the way more common automatic version of our car, didn't look, and must have thought we were ignorant. Looking to get your car fixed? Want someone to break it even more for you? Than this is the place for you! I needed an oil change, and decided to go get one from Mr Lube since it was near my work and my house. It had always seemed busy to me when I drove by and so I figured that they could be trusted with an oil change. I went in on a Saturday and it was packed, tons of cars. They have three lanes so I got into the shortest line up. They offered me coffee and a newspaper and cleaned my windows for me, which was really nice of them. I requested an oil change and asked them if they could change one of my headlights because I had been too busy to go and buy one myself. While they were doing the oil change they began to pressure me into getting all kinds of other things done. Because I do not know a lot about cars, and I had been neglecting my car lately I agreed. Now I know I shouldn't have gotten anything they recommended done besides the oil change and I felt stupid and ripped off after. Since I am a positive person I tried to turn to it into a positive by figuring I wouldn't have to get a couple things done for a while. So pleased with my service I was driving along and my car got stuck in second gear (I drive an automatic), of course I had no idea it was stuck in second gear but the car was stalling and wasn't going above 40km an hour with about 3000 RPM. It was super scary and awful to drive, later on I figured out that my car was stuck in second gear once my boyfriend drove it and I googled the problem. The next day (Sunday) I went back and complained. They realized that they had put too much transmission fluid in the car, so they drained some out, still didn't work. The car was stalling more then ever at this point, and wasn't going much faster then 40km. Since the manager doesn't come in on Sunday's I couldn't speak to him personally. They assured me however that all repairs that they did would be covered by the shop and I wouldn't have to worry about anything. At the end of the day I had to surrender my car to them so that they could give it to an actual mechanic who could fix it. (The car garage next door to Mr Lube, fixed it for them). Kicking myself for my stupidity I spent the next day, phoning them over and over again asking what was going on and how my car was doing. The manager doesn't come in before 11am by the way, which is just a sign of laziness in my opinion, he also has very bad English skills which is something he should work on because he was not able to articulate himself properly (at one point I thought I heard him say I would have to pay for everything, which resulted in a bit of a melt down on my end) thankfully we were able to resolve the issue. They got my car fixed in two days, and I was able to pick it up on the Tuesday in the afternoon. The car is thankfully fixed and they paid for everything. It turns out that they pulled a wire attached to my transmission, which was causing the problem. Which to me doesn't make any sense because they were changing oils, not dealing with any sort of electrical issues. The "mechanics" working here must really not know what they are doing if they are unable to change oils without ruining a transmitter. Although I appreciate the fact that they fixed my car with no extra charge I am very annoyed that they did this to my car. I'm not sure what kind of training the people who work here have but they should consider practicing a bit more instead of just improvising on people's cars. I would give them one star but they earned a second star because they were able to resolve the issue. read more

When I responded and told him that I'd like a credit or my money back for his "mistake"--guess what? No response. I'm sorry, but they keep digging a deeper hole here. I have been coming here for a couple of years now and I have to say "they are A-ok!" When I pulled in for my last oil change (and every oil change) I was greeted by this guy who offered me several types of newspapers for me to read while I waited..no charge. He then offered me a garbage so I could collect any unwanted garbage in my car. He then offered me a coffee or a hot chocolate free of charge. He then offered me a menu of their services....what? was I at a five star restaurant or what? So with coffee and newspaper in hand I waited merely 15 mins and was pulled into bay 4. The attendant was friendly, fast, and efficient. Now I am no gear head for sure but not once during the whole time do I ever feel like I don't know what their talking about. They always keep a record of me and my vehicle so they know when to suggest doing other maintenance things to the car, and never have they done anything without my consent. Out of any 5 star review I have ever given...surprisingly Mr. Lube is the most worthy... I have never liked taking care of "car" things....getting tune ups, putting air in the tire...I was born without that boy/car gene..but after my fist experience at Mr. Lube I am starting to change my mind... When you pull up to the building a man comes up to the car and tells you which line to drive into...he them come over and chats with you about what services you want..then he offers you a hot beverage..I get the hot chocolate..and a paper!! This is serious old school 1950's kind of service..all the while they are calling me "sir"..no one EVER calls me "sir" ..there is really some nice about the respect of that word... After a short wait you drive in and they fix you all up..change the oil..filters if you want..check the breaks...tires...just make sure everything is ok...them they give you a sticker dated with the next suggested oil change time so you don't forget..I think a lot of people don;t realize the importance of changing their oil often ..so this is brilliant for them! read more

A dishonest shop at all levels. Although I have come to expect the "upsell" when having a vehicle serviced at Mr. Lube, the last time went too far. I unfortunately asked my father-in-law to take my vehicle to the Arbutus Mr. Lube to have the oil changed before he took it on a road trip. He left with a $630.00 bill after being pressured into services that were not required. The employees "checked" my transaxle and differential fluids and told my father-in-law that these had to be replaced based off of the smell and colour. He was told that one of the fluids smelled burnt and he was made to feel that without replacing these fluids, the car would not survive the road trip. However, these fluids had all been replaced 23,000kms ago and at my previous oil change 5,000kms earlier (at a different shop) I was told that these fluids all looked good. I had another 21,000kms to go before they needed replacement. When I confronted the manager about what took place, he tried to tell me that the diff and trans fluid for my car is supposed to be replaced every 24,000 kms. This was a complete lie and a poor attempt to make me go away. There is not a chance that a manager of an auto shop wouldn't know better than this. At a later point, the manager confirmed that these fluids actually should be replaced every 44,000 kms. The manager did refund me a portion of the bill. However, the amount he refunded only reflected the difference in the cost that Mr. Lube charges to repalce differential and transmission fluid versus the shops where I had the earlier work done. Mr. Lube charged nearly 150% more for these services than its competitors. read more

True, they try to do some up-selling, let's put that out there first. Same way Future Shop tries to tell you their extended warranty. However reason I AM a fan is because of their after-care. They don't nickle and dime you for it - in fact it has been free for me on about 4 subsequent visits now: After having gone to them to have various fluid flushes I had to go back in to top up the coolant (I was having issues with the sensor) and while they were at it, they checked out the error code because my engine light had come on. Something my (BMW) dealer wanted me to book an appointment for at a charge for at least 1 hr of diagnostic - turned out to be an O2 sensor. So i had them reset the engine light and went on my merry way. Few weeks later, I went to check my coolant again, they topped it up (free of charge). Next day, I noticed a bit of minor oil leakage and my engine light came on, so I went back in again, they suspected the filter, replaced it free of charge, and while at it I had them check the error codes for the engine light again (seems its still a problem with the O2 sensor). read more

To make a long story short, our recent 4x4ing expedition left us with a punctured tire on a holiday Monday. Almost every garage or dealership in town was closed but we noticed that Mr. Lube was open. Hoping they could fix our punctured tired, we drove in. Immediately we were told that Mr. Lube doesn't repair tires but the technician offered to look at it anyway, free of charge. Instead of sending us somewhere that would cost an arm and a leg to repair or replace the tire, he told us all about repair kits and explained exactly how to fix it ourselves. He didn't charge us a penny for the advice and simply wished us luck. While I can't comment on the quality of the services Mr. Lube provides at this location, I can say that the customer service is top notch. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. P.S. I was enormously impressed with Mr. Lube. I have used them before to have a full fluid change and was offered free fluid top ups. This visit was extremely easy, I was given a tea while I waited in my car. I read some new stories while the tires were filled, doors were oiled, fluids were topped up and windows were washed. My favorite place to go for tune ups, oil changes, etc. The staff are absolutely great- always friendly and quick, and they never try to talk me into doing any extra unnessecary work like I've had other shops do. I went in to change my oil and transmission fluid and they were very helpful and even cleaned my windows while they were working. Went back in after a few days to double check my transmission fluid level as per their recommendation and they were quick to offer me a coffee and check everything before sending me on my way. My wife brought our car in for a coolant flush,as it had overheated (for the first time since we bought it),they charged us $190 and never did it! My father was in the city and checked it out,as we have 2 young kids and can't be stranded. They admitted to doing what they called a drain and top up. Dumbest thing I've heard of. Anyone who knows anything about combustion engines, know that's vehicular suicide, in leaving air pockets in the lines, in summer heat, when theres clearly a partial blockage. My wife brought it back again to actually get a flush. They failed again and did a partial flush. WTF is that you ask? It's when they get a bit of rust coloured crap out and call it done. I'll admit alot came out once I took it to someone who knows anything about doing a coolant flush. It's not hard but you flush it until coolant FLOWS UNOBSTRUCTED THROUGH THE SYSTEM! Unfortunately it overheated again on the way to the mechanic,had to get towed, leaving us stranded again. Not the head gasket it shot(probably more). Now they take no responsibility, saying that followed company protocol,in an attempt to differ blame. So company protocol is incompitance,lie and deny. Mr. Lube's environmental statement is misleading and their dedication to community stewardship equally lacking. Here is the quote as it appears on their website: "The public is encouraged to return used oil products and filters for free to Mr. Lube for recycling." However, last month (May 16) I brought some used oil to the 12th & Arbutus location for recycling but was bluntly refused. When I asked the guy what was up with that he told me that his boss had instructed him only to receive oil only from customers, and he advised me against discussing it with the manager, as I would only get the same answer. Made it sound like his boss was a bully. Seems that the folks at Mr. Lube only want you to think that they are interested in environmental stewardship, when in reality they are not. Meanwhile, I have sent two messages to the company office in Richmond but have yet to receive a reply. Completely ghosted. And after a month I'm not holding my breath. Damaged Propert/No Communication: My first time at this location, and they start opening my car doors without asking, which lead some of my camping gear to fall out, the car is packed. This action ruined my tent, as it hit the floor and was damaged by the grease and oil on the ground. I bought it about a month ago and yet to use it. They have no consideration. The second was the next day when I went to get tires put on, there was no introduction as themselves or asked who I am, they just assumed they knew what I was here for. I had to then fill them in. Got the high pressure up-sell and ended up getting two extra services that were utterly unnecessary. Brought my BMW X5M into get oil change. Waited 15 mins then I was told they didn't have my filter avail. Technician told me they would call me and shouldn't take more then half a day. I've called them 3 times. Each time was asked all this info. They didn't know what I was talking about. This is my 3rd vehicle I've brought to them. Other 2 times were bit better. But on my jeep they give me 10 dollars off a 1000 dollar surprise differential service and oil change Which I thought was a bit of a joke. 10 bucks ! I do have a regular mechanic but that usually means leaving with them whole day. Mr lube suppose to be fast and easy. I came in for a simple oil change. 1.5 hours later I had been up sold a number of services I later learned were completely unnecessary. One comment they made about my transition fluid was shocking. They told me it should be pink and mine was red indicating it needed to be changed. Then they proceeded to pour new, red, transmission fluid into my car! They also insisted that I needed to get injector cleaner. They charged me $150 for this. I could have purchased a $10 bottle at a gas station and poured it into my gar tank myself! I noticed this happened to the woman ahead of me too. It is pretty clear that they take advantage of people (specifically women) who are not experts at car maintenance. I will never return here. Asked how much is would be to change transmission fluid and filter. Was quoted $120. Actually charged $190 after the fill and they told me that it took more fluid than expected. A little bit over a month later a friend also needed her transmission fluid changed. I warned her what happened to me and sure enough, they did the same thing to her. I really hope they enjoy the extra $70 because they'll never see my business again and I'm making it my goal to tell everyone I know. Edit: over the past couple of years I've had two other issues. In one case the oil fill cap was left off. In another, a windshield wiper (during their promotion) was left under the hood. I always check under the hood and the o level when I get home. I felt that the work was done with competence, but since i am an old guy with an old car, they avoided any voodoo nonsense reported by other yelpers. Absolutely horrible. Don't come here to get any service work done to your car. Mechanics are unskilled and rude. They pulled my car in for an oil change and completely stripped my oil pan bolt. They were under my car for over an hour just to tell me that the bolt was stripped. The bolt was fine. Them being under there fiddling with it tells me that they stripped it. They then said they can't replace it and for me to leave and go get an oil change elsewhere. All in all, a terrible experience and a huge waste of time. read more
