Every destination has these stores, and almost always they're filled with overpriced crap you buy to show family and friends you thought about them while you were away not thinking about anything. Mr. John's is exactly that shop, only it's surprisingly not as overpriced as others you've probably been in before! You'll find the magnets with every name on them except the one you're looking for, keychains of the same variety, and all manner of other personalized items you definitely never thought you'd be buying while on vacation. The humping pig salt and pepper shakers with the saying "Makin Bacon" across the rump caught my attention immediately. I just can't figure out why that would be a relevant souvenirs of Charleston. They even had pot paraphernalia too! We ended up buying some Charleston kitchen towels and a few magnets highlighting the state of SC. They seemed most appropriate and we felt confident they'd make our friends feel appreciated. All in all, decent souvenirs shop experience. Stop here if you're in the need and the area.

We came in to get souvenirs from our trip, but we should have shopped somewhere else. The colorful shirts caught our eye and the kids really liked them, so we let them choose their shirts. We bought quite a few things and spent a ton of money there. When we got to the counter with our selections, the young woman working there was trying to put a design on a shirt while talk8ng on her cell phone. She seemed to have an attitude that we were bothering her by wanting to check out. She was a bit short with us, but I continued to smile and gave her the benefit of the doubt, thinking maybe she was just overwhelmed. We got outside after our purchase, and the kids wanted to wear their new shirts. We pulled them from the bag, only to discover that the youngest one's had a seam not sewn. I took it back in to simply exchange for one that didn't have a flaw. Again, this clerk seemed like she was really frustrated that I wanted a shirt that wasn't damaged. While I searched through the pile of shirts to find the same design in his size, Grandson came in and said since there were no more blue shirts in that design, he would take yellow. We pulled out the yellow one and the clerk came over with the damaged shirts (there were two with unseen seams) and put them back on the shelf for some other unsuspecting customer! I was shocked! By that time, she had gone past the point of seeming to be frustrated or overwhelmed and was just downright rude. That night, we did laundry. The design on the yellow shirt we exchanged for, came apart, ad though it was shredding. We gathered as many pieces of the design as we could find, with the intention of my daughter repairing it as much as she could. It looked TERRIBLE and we weren't sure we could save it. Clearly these people are not taking the time to make these shirts properly. I paid a lot of money for these shirts, and as we inspected the rest of them, we realized they were ALL going to fall apart in the wash. They were not properly adhered and as my daughter had watched as this woman had done a couple shirts, she noted that she was not following proper procedure for adhering a transfer to the fabric. They have signs up that they will not give refunds, but you can exchange for same product or store credit. My daughter attempted to reattach the transfer on the yellow shirt, as well as attempted to re-press all the others we purchased, but I have a feeling that they may also come apart in the wash, even though we used cold water on a gentle cycle. You can be sure that on our next trip to Folly Beach, we will NOT be shopping in Mr. John's Beach Shop!

Mr. John's Beach Store on Folly Beach is one of my favorite gift shops in the Charleston area. They have many gift items that you cannot find in other stores and the overall vibe and the store is unique too. I have had many successful trips here and have found gifts for many people on my list. Great store.

I've been frequenting Mr. John's Beach Store every summer for as long as I can remember. The man that owns and runs the store now is Mr. John's son. I'm not sure how long the store has been there but it's clearly an institution on Folly. It's a great little store with just about everything you could need while visiting the beach. They have the basics for a great beach day - towels, flops, toys, inflatables, etc. They also have souvenirs if you are looking for postcards, magnets or the like. They include some higher end items too such as jewelry and ridiculously cool porch/chair hammocks. I had to literally pull boyfriend away from those and I must say that I can't blame him. They were awesome. I bought a fab bracelet from there many years ago and still rock it on a regular basis. A trip to Folly is not complete for me unless I go to Mr. John's! I highly recommend checking it out.

Old fashioned beach store shopping. Every little thing you need for a day on the sand - and a little more. A fun place to shop

Ask the Community - Mr. John's Beach Store

I bought a men's patchwork hooded long sleeve shirt about 2 years ago at folly beach and i was wondering if they are still available?

I'm awfully sorry but we don't carry that anymore. If you can send a picture of it to our e-mail (mrjohnsbeachstore@yahoo.com) I'll see if I can source it. Thanks

Sitting on Center Street, connected to the Vacasa Rental spot and next to the Circle K is Islander,…read moreone of the few souvenir shops lining the main strip of Folly. Islander is fairly large, surprisingly larger than it appears from the road. Like most shops they feature a plethora of local branded items from shirts, cups, hats, frames, sticker, magnets, etc...as well as a large variety of toys, Knick knacks and even shoes. Prices are what you would expect with most clothing ranging from $16 - $30. Service left something to be desired. And honestly, the service was non-existent. The cashier was standing behind the counter and was not paying attention to anyone in the store and even when I walked by the counter and made eye contact, she still refused to speak. Maybe she was already tired of the tourist crowd...but If that is the case, then she has a long season ahead of her! Overall, Islander is a local souvenir shop that will do you well if you are after some gifts for yourself or folks back home, as well as any last minute toys or supplies you may need.

If she would have just explained that they don't earn things I would have been fine. But instead she said "you can get a new one if you pay. Did I break it? You broke it so not my problem". Honestly it was just shockingly rude. I won't go back based on the lack of customer service. I'd give 0 stars if that was an option
