One Star: EXPENSIVE AND INFLEXIBLE I hired Mr. Handyman (Mr. Handyman of Central - Eastern Norfolk County & S.Shore) to install an awning cover on an existing frame at my home for the summer months. Two workers came to do the installation. Although they both worked hard at the task, neither had done such a job before, restarting the job twice and calling a local awning company for advice. Due to their inexperience and a rising wind, the workers had to leave with the work undone. The second day one of the workers returned and finished the task. A total of about 7 man hours of labor were expended to do the work that in prior years was accomplished in 3 to 4 man hours. The owner of the franchise was unwilling to negotiate the cost of the work. I paid for on-the-job training as well as for the actual installation. The cost to install the awning was roughly FIVE times the cost as for previous years. I'll will never I hire this company again. read more

The handyman came to my house to replace a $20 gate lock that could be opened and locked from either side and instead put in a lock that can only be opened and locked from one side of the gate, for more than $300. Also they took the old gate lock without permission so ai can't even determine the correct lock to replace their terrible work with. Also, they ruined the fence with extra holes installing this incorrect gate lock. This was a shady service with awful results. Do not recommend. read more

Not one thing you said was true. Your office said they were checking with you about a refund after I complained on Google. There was no response after that. Another handyman never touched those two drawers. So make sure you get your facts straight. Lastly you never had any intention of replacing the glides with quality glides. I paid 50 per glide. You paid maybe 12 per glide. Mine are all bottom mounted your cheap glides are side mounted. The drawer dose not open all the way. I also purchased soft close. The ones that were installed are not. Job was to patch and repair approximately 2-3 sq ft of drywall. The repair was not done well and left a "gloop" of mud on the ceiling which I will have to re-do. Contacted the office regarding a credit and did not receive a response. The tech also left the bag of trash and misc. materials in the house without telling me. For the amount charged ($800) I could have hired a tradesman plasterer/drywaller. read more

I desperately needed my dryer vent cleaned and couldn't find anyone to do it . I called every local handyman and business in a 15 mile radius that I thought might possibly clean the vent - only one place would do it, for a crazy price. The best and only quote I had was from some HVAC place for $228. Really? $228 to brush the lint out of my dryer? I was at the point of breaking down and buying one of those home kits with a brush to try and scoop out 20 years of accumulated lint, like that would work. For some reason I felt like I was really going out on a limb calling them, but after watching the commercials on tv for months and they were still in business, I figured hey - what's to lose? At least when I finally called Mr. H, the pleasant customer service minion immediately said yes they clean vents, and the only issue was whether they'd come down Rt.3 as far as I live. That being settled, I figured they could charge me whatever they wanted because (a) basically my dryer wasn't drying anything and (b) I was waiting for it to catch fire when I did run it. She ran down their services, gave me a price over the phone, and reiterated that they are responsible for everything from work to clean-up. That works for me, come on over! Ok, enter My Handyman who turns out to be Jim. Who is Insured, competent, non-aggressive, nice to my cat and ready to get my dryer running. He explained the services and price, and listened to my tale of woe and damp clothes. For $145, he took it all apart - vacuumed and swept and scooped and finally all was to his satisfaction. He put the thing back together, ran the dryer to make sure it dried. He left a refrigerator magnet, a checklist for the house, and was gone slightly inside of an hour. Good job, fair price and I will call them again. Next week, I have stuff to fix! p.s. I forgot to say, I'd give them 5 stars except for the price issue: even though they were willing to do the work and at the best price, I still think the cost was steep for what was done. I contacted Mr. Handyman on Thursday and they called me back the next day with an appointment for that morning. I had my front door threshold to be waterproofed by installing a rain drip guard. The handyman (Shawn) went to home depot to get the part and installed it on my door. The door also had to be taken down and the bottom sanded since the door was hard to close. Shawn was very good at explaining what needed to be done and how long it was going to take and the cost required. I had a very good experience and would recommend them for future work. read more

I've been trying to get someone out to replace two rotten window sills since well before the pandamic begin with no luck. No one would call back or when they did the job wasn't big enough. A friend suggested calling Mr. Handyman Central Norfolk County and within 10 minutes Nicole (a rock star!) went over rates (very reasonable), procedures and we scheduled a date/time to have the work done. They even called me when an opening came up and they could come a few days earlier! They emailed me the confirmation and called an 1 hour before the appt. to say John M. was on his way. Courtesy, knowledgeable John went over the issues with the window sills and a few shingles that were affected, what he was going to do and the materials he was going to be using. 3 hours later he was done, cleaned up everything and was on his way. I requested the services of Mr. Handyman to install a shower door. The service technician was not friendly upon arrival. He failed to introduce himself. It was apparent he had difficult time installing the door. After the door was installed he advised me it was the incorrect size. At that point, there was nothing I could as I can not return an installed door. He then advised me of the price. The price was more money than I was quoted from their receptionist. I advised him I was going to call his office to inquire about the quoted price. He then got very angry, stormed out of the house, and left my door wide opened. When I went to inspect the work I noticed there were nails left on the bathroom floor. This is especially concerning as I have a young child. When I called the owner to request a refund and explain my dissatisfaction he was not helpful. I am disgusted by the poor quality of work and customer service I received from this company. I have worked with several general contractors and handymen and they are the absolute worse. I intend on contacting the Better Business Bureau. read more

I didn't have the best experience with this business. There were miscommunications on pricing and when the handyman arrived he didn't bring ANY of the materials to do the job. Instead I was to be charged $160 for the first hour (first hour was $144 plus $15 "Home Depot fee") while the contractor went to home depot to get drywall and plaster to fix a hole. This was eventually resolved with a call to the manager (who was not pleasant to deal with AT ALL). If you're going to use this business please insist that they bring the materials with them so that you don't end up having to pay for their lack of preparedness. read more

Mr. Handyman (Jim Prendergast) was one of the few companies that returned my call (and I called many). After setting up a time to come and do the job, John showed up ON TIME and on the day scheduled! I debated on putting up a review but after months of looking at the disappointing sink install I just felt like I had to. The first guy who installed it was not happy. Lots of expletives flying. Was not happy he had to do a kitchen sink. They send a second guy since I was still have a small leak. He basically tried to band-aid it and not acknowledge what a crummy job was done. I wound up pulling the white gaudy caulking and replace it with clear silicone. (much better aesthectically!) Now the plumber's putty is slowing coming out from under the sink so I will have to pull that and put silicone in its place. Not impressed. Please take my advice and call a plumber for this type of stuff. Maybe they can clean your gutters but I wouldn't hire them for something extensive by any means. And will not use or recommend them. Do Not Hire. Very disappointed after they came recommended to me by a friend. Completely unprofessional, poor communication, prices are steep. First appointment they canceled two hours before the time after I had taken the day off of work for it. We rescheduled for later that same week, my husband took another day off of work, was told they would be able to do the work the date of appointment. The handyman came on time and assessed the project then left to go to Home Depot to find materials needed and said their office would be in touch with a few options/estimates shortly. 3 hours later, never heard anything so I had to call them and was given a run around, was told that the handyman had begun work on another clients project, clearly there was a breakdown in communication and eventually was quoted an insanely high price that they couldn't even explain what it covered. Similar experience to Laura...general lack of preparedness added significantly to the bill; we were even charged an extra forty-five minutes of "travel time" although they advertise having "6 employees. No subs. Charges hourly rate. No travel charges." Additionally home and product (sliding glass door which we paid to have picked up by the company for an extra 1 1/2-2 billed hours) were damaged in the install process and the job remains incomplete while we attempt to deal with Jim (The wonderful manager who wasn't "pleasant to deal with at all" i.e. he left a message in which he obviously calls us a-holes....really!? who does that) I would suggest that homeowners run down the list of local businesses, friends, relatives, and even highly functional pets before relying on this company in their desperation...this is the type of company that forces into existence websites like "yelp" and "Angie's list" and I regret not having taken the time to check their history before asking for their services. I'm baffled/amazed that companies operate in this fashion even when I disregard the a-hole comment (....on my answering machine...like, how dumb can you be?) and can quite confidently say that Mr. Handyman has only detracted from the value of my home throughout the length of our relationship. read more
