MPower Energy has taught me so much over the past month. I have always been interested in conserving energy, so it's only natural I would take a liking to MPower Energy and their renewable energy products. Not only their products, but the assortment of knowledge they provide for free on their blog and website. I learned so much about conserving energy from reading their posts that it got me even more confident in renewable energy as a whole. So I reached out to them to schedule an appointment with their sales team. They were able to schedule a next day appointment, and the next day the sales representative showed up on time. I gave him my energy bill and he explained how renewable energy products could cut this bill by at least half. That's definitely something I was interested in. I know more than anyone that energy conservation is the cheaper route long term. Eventually, saving energy pays for any renewable energy expense by itself. So I agreed to the conditions of the contract and we went from there. Fast forward a month later and now I'm already reaping all the benefits of going solar. I am very satisfied with this company and their ability to be transparent regarding their procedures and renewable energy products. By the time I signed a contract, I was already sufficiently educated enough to feel like I was making an informed decision. The information on their website plus the explanation from the sales representative was perfect for making my final decision. Thank you for standing behind renewable energy, which is something society needs more of a pull towards. Parents: PLEASE review your college student's utility bills ASAP!! Mpower Energy is signing up young renters at supply rates far higher than Duke Energy's default, with no guaranteed savings. They are targeting college students and enticing them to switch using a "100% renewable" pitch. This sounds good to a student but reality hits when they get their bill and their new charges are significantly more. (This just happened on the University of Cincinnati campus - my daughter was signed up in early November) Students: If ever in doubt, use your RESOURCES! Worst solar company out there! To all peoples BEWARED of EMPOWER company rude manager by the name Josh, impolite customer service, the most unprofessional company! When they came out did the installed of their shitty cheap panels & battery pack. The installation crew left nails, screws, metal used pipe, and trash were left behind at our property. The worst thing is the crew put their tool on top of my bass boat. Like it was their boat. We had to go tell the crew a few times. After the installation no instruction the company didn't adviced or educate us on their equipment at all! What kind of company leaving their customers out in the cold! Our cast maybe their equipment may not be good or what. It kept popping our breaker. We call the company they kept giving us the run around finally they send a technician. All he did was flip a darn switch $ charged us a $260 fee. Stay away from this company call MPOWER! Before the installation or signed the contract. The agent by the name Miguel would answered his phone & text at all time but after the installation. He is no where to be found! He will not respond anymore call or text! As some of these reviews said, the sales process was incredibly misleading. The rep made it sound like he was like contracted by the city I live in to help people save money by signing up for a green initiative by the city. So he took my info down and in like 5 minutes flat I was signed up for something I didn't understand. The only reason I signed up in the first place, was that I was assured I could cancel at any time, which I did the next day. Here's my suggestion: have your reps be honest about representing a green energy supplier. If people are receptive, then have your representatives weigh out the pros and cons. First off, they presented themselves as an adjunct of the city. They essentially made out that, through a very convoluted path, the panels would end up being free or at least pay for themselves and lower our electric costs. 1 1/2 years later we are out nearly $20,000 and owe another $32,000 to a bank in Texas, paying $208 a month for 28 1/2 years. When I inquire about warranties I hear crickets. When I inquire about who to call if it breaks down... crickets. When I ask for help filing for the city, state and federal subsidies they sold me on... crickets, nothing. I will keep trying, hoping to avoid getting a lawyer, but I'm not confident... one bit. The sales staff appear to be very green young folk from the neighborhood who, my guess, probably don't understand how they're roping folks into a long term problem... while the ownership, not of the neighborhood, remain forever unseen. read more

They should be stopped from attempting to conduct business. They preyed on my 87 y/o mother who has dementia. Mom thought it was Con Edison upgrading to energy saving equipment. They lied to her. Then they lied to me telling me they have protocols about obtaining contracts from certain ages. Then they asked for proof of dementia and told me the CEO would call me. no call. no nothing!! I called early March and mom was still getting a Con Ed bill. Now after i called in Mar h im told panels are working. Mom still thinks it is Con Edison. Got pulled into this bad service years ago when I was looking for a cheaper alternative, thinking maybe I could save some money on electric. Turns out they lied about charging less than market rate, my bills were consistently $30-40 higher than the market rate. I only realized after speaking to one of my friends about how much my electric was costing me that this wasn't a normal price. So bills that should have been $100 were often $130, some of my bills crossed into $200 and even $300. Now as embarrassing as it is to say I had this service for about 2 years before realizing I was getting scammed, tbh I'm not sure how long I had them, I just know it's been years of being overcharged. Every now and then a rep would call offering a "promotional price" to give some sort of illusion that my bill was going down when it wasn't. I know electric rates tend to be higher depending on season so I would often just think it was normal... UNTIL I go on con Ed's website and do a comparison tool of this supply to the original and saw that I was consistently overcharged every single month for that last 18 months. So I tried to reach Mpower, they were closed that day, tried to go on the website, but the sign in page is a white screen, it only allowed agent sign-ins, but as soon as you click customer sign-in that page blanks out. In my frustration I called Con Ed and told them to revert my Esco back to the original Con Ed, they did. Here's where it gets weird, some random rep calls me and asks why I turned it off, I told her all of this and tell her I do not want to use them anymore, she tries to guilt me into going back "oh you'll be using a service option that isn't as green as ours" "you're going to contribute to climate change" etc (tbh I don't care about "green" if it's not money; I won't purposely disregard the environment, but if it's gonna cost me this much, I'm going back to what's cheaper). I told her I no longer wanted an account with them and that I already had con Ed revert me back to the original. She tries to give me a promotional price and I ended up hanging up. For days after that they would call me after I told them not to and that I didn't want their services. Then I get a notice in the mail that my gas doesn't have an account holder; so I called con Ed to fix it... then today, I wake up and my lights are off. Checked the app and it said my account is inactive?? I call con Ed and they tell me someone put a stop service on my account for November 1st?? Who the hell would do that?? I've lived here for 13 years and NEVER had an issue like that, not until I left Mpower. I told the ConEd rep that I think Mpower had something to do with it because these problems started after leaving them. Of course they can't say, but did tell me Mpower "didn't have the power to do that". However, if they have my name, account number and address, they can pretend to be me and put in a stop service on my account. Can't they? I may have been dumb enough to let them swindle me for 2 years, but I know what's possible even if it's not allowed. Do something about your bad business practices and stop lying to your customers. But definitely mislead me by first just suggesting that the air quality is bad here, and that he only wanted to look at the second page of my energy bill. Then suddenly he was taking down my account number and had me signing up for something I know nothing about and trying to verify stuff over the phone. I called to cancel as soon as he left. A sham with a scam! The kid showed up at my door smelling like weed... and I have nothing against people who do smoke, but first impressions are lasting impressions. If you are going to randomly approach a stranger in their dwelling, don't stink! After a little spritz of Febreze, he gave me some information and wanted to take a look at my latest bill. He told me I could save money during the winter and summer months, which made sense given they have a 'flat rate' - of course, during the spring and fall, when I open up, that 'flat rate' is no bargain. While explaining the rates, he signed me up for their program and I got these emails explaining what was going to happen... after a bit more banter, I kicked him out and immediately cancelled the service. Of course, while trying to cancel... the person on the other end of the phone call was trying everything in their power to keep me with them. After about half an hour of this person's groveling, I had had enough and told them to cancel it! I got the cancellation email about an hour later. Terrible company to deal with, total scam of an organization, even worse on the phones! (And never throw anything away they give you... always keep your receipts! A MPower rep entered my apartment building unlawfully and went door to door. That alone is trespassing! I was told everyone else in the building was signing up for this which was untrue. They made it sound they worked with ConEd which is also untrue. This is not a trustworthy company. After doing some research, I read about a MPower Energy lawsuit which explains why they resort to deceptive marketing tactics like set rates for a year which is a complete lie. They disguise themselves as employers or other energy companies and show up at your doorstep and talk your mouth off to get you to sign up without your explicit permission as soon as they get a hold of your personal information. Scum operation. Got today the girl to my door into apartment building with Mpower tag on her chest. Somehow she already got the copy of my current ConEd bill on her notebook. She displayed it to me, telling that I was chosen by ConEd to be switched to new and much better provider that will give me big savings on all my future bills . She told to me that since she already has all my info, I should sign on the form right now. Girl was very aggressive by promoting her case, but even for a very naïve eye it looked like a perfect scum. read more

Very scammy sales reps- I got a knock on my door near the end of a business day and was given a load of half truths and misleading comments from this rep about this company's affiliation with ConEdison/National Grid. She was super assertive about looking at my energy bills (I wish I hadn't let them look at them), and gave the impression that my cooperation was mandatory. The company also straight up lied about the reason they were soliciting door to door, esp. during a pandemic. They said I missed a message about them from National Grid- I checked ALL of my correspondence afterwards and that was bs. Fast forward a few minutes later, she's coaching me through a phone call meant to switch me over to Mpower's services (in which she had me lie about her not being there coaching me). It was so overwhelming that it took a few minutes to come to my wits and realize this was a whole scam and a half. Other reviews talk about how late these reps show up, and if I had to guess it's because they don't want you calling soon after they hook you in order to cancel. Luckily I called them 10 minutes later and firmly told them to cancel any service or connection to Mpower. I also made sure that I got a cancellation number and an email confirmation (very important!). Also had to make sure my National Grid service wasn't interrupted... NOT A GREAT USE OF MY TIME ON A WORKDAY. I reported this company to my building's ownership because if I was able to get scammed, I can only imagine how this affects older and more vulnerable tenants who wouldn't know to question or stop these disingenuous tactics. I'm hesitant to call the cops or anything, but I hope there's an government agency in NYC that would have some power to deal with this kind of problem. read more

I heard a knock on my door, to what appeared to be a young guy in his 20s dressed informally, with a Mpower badge attached to his shirt, and holding an iPad with an empty form ready to be filled out. He began with a claim that my building is high in carbon emissions. He proceeded to offer me an alternative to switch to Mpower. Then he asked me for page 2 of my Con Ed bill. Here's what he did wrong. 1. He did not properly present Mpower objective, mission, and overall goal. 2. I know that he knows there are terrible reviews about Mpower on the internet. The best thing he could have done was to create an argument why they are still a great solution, and why the reviews are not representative of the company's overall value. 3. He was trying to sell me the company's service but did not offer me any value. The company seems to be doing something positive by offering clean energy. The least they can do is brand themselves with a stronger sense of trustworthiness. I hope they rebrand, and work on their brand, and marketing strategy. Guy and girl came by at 5pm, said my building was flagged for carbon emissions and residents were getting sick, said they needed to see page 2 of my ConEd bill so they could mark my unit as "all good". Once i saw the "MPower" logo on the girl's fleece, I knew this whole thing was a waste of time so i told them I was on a really important call and they said they'd come back over the weekend. Hopefully they won't but if they do I'm not answering the door. Two ladies came late at night, claiming that the carbon usage in my building/area was too high and that it was over the safety limit and that they people were "getting sick." They said I had been contacted by a company but I did not respond, so that was why they were here. They asked for the electricity consumption rate on my ConEd bill, which I unwittingly shared with them. Then they asked for my name and phone number so that they could switch us to their renewable energy service. They had a pamphlet and showed us their affiliation with ConEd on her pad and how they had a 5-star rating on Google (I was unable to find that rating on Google myself later). I asked for the pamphlet because I wanted to read about it more before making a decision, but they did not give me the pamphlet, saying that they wanted to save it for people who actually signed up, and thankfully they left without further pressing. The experience was very sus and I would not recommend giving them any information, especially with all the bad experiences other people had here on Yelp. I later looked them up and it seems like MPower is a real company with some real connections with ConEd. However, for a renewable energy company, its reps seemed to be long-winded, its recruitment tactic less than stellar, and its approach definitely watered down their credibility, leaving you with a less-than-clean taste in your mouth. read more

I thought other New Yorkers should be made aware of this door-to-door scammers from Empower who try to scam you into switching energy companies. Some people seem to know about this company already, but for people who are new to the area, like me, it seemed believable. There was a well dressed young woman going door to door in my neighborhood. She represented herself as belonging to the parent agency of my electric provider and asked to look at my energy bill to make sure that I was getting the newly-lowered rate customers in this area are supposed to be getting, since there was an "error" and "some customers were accidentally getting overcharged and hadn't properly fixed it on their bills." They claimed this "fixing" would be greatly expedited if they did it for me. They then called their managers to, in their words, make sure the new discount was applied to my bill- at this point I told them I'd call ConEd because I needed to return to work. The woman got really irate and started cursing at me saying I was hindering her from doing her job and that her supervisor would be mad! She said I was trying to get in trouble. After she left I looked it up afterwards and realized that she completely misrepresented their affiliation: they are in no way affiliated with ConEd but are a competitor company. What MPower does is take your information from you and use it to change over your energy provider to them. I don't know if their company is any better or any worse, but people should be able to make their own decisions and not get pressured by this misinformation. Made me think that they were affiliated with my energy company and offered a lower rate than my current rate per kWh, but I noticed in the fine print it's an adjustable rate for a few months, and an insanely high fixed rate. They come at you really fast and lucky for them, they caught me tired at after work. Can't believe I fell for it. When I called to cancel (got a poorly worded email confirming a "cancellation request"), the operator gave me some spiel about how we're helping Ukraine by not buying Russian gas (my energy provider is a power plant) and "it will help with inflation" or something. Sketchy sales reps come to your door in the evening and position themselves as needing to check your energy usage because you're in an area in the city that has high carbon usage. They then convince you to sign up for their service without even asking but basically making you provide your information as if they're just checking your usage, not signing you up for something. Then before you know it they make you verify over the phone that you consent to enroll and have to lie on the phone that the representative left but they're still standing right there. Very confusing and awkward and I called immediately afterwards to cancel. The customer service rep ignored my request and tried to get me to stick with it for a month but it seems like I was finally successful in cancelling cause he gave me a cancellation number. Two MPower workers came to my door claiming I was "way over my usage for allowable energy", insinuating I had done something wrong, and demanding to see my energy bill. They also said "your service provider has been trying to contact you for weeks!" (Which is a lie. I keep a very close eye on my energy bills and my email. I have not been contacted by anyone, nor am I in violation of anything) When I told them to give me a moment while I Google their company and check their affiliation with ConEdison, they asked to see my energy bill on my phone. I said no. The final straw was when they offered to make the phone-call themselves so long as I gave them my account number, and then wanted to coach me into what to say to ConEd - Very scummy tactics that may work on the less-savvy. Your service provider is not trying to contact you, and you are in violation of nothing - DO NOT ANSWER THE DOOR FOR THESE PEOPLE This company would do better to just be honest and say they want to sell you a different type of energy. DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE SIGNING UP. They do not guarantee their energy sources and prices can jump after your first few months, so it's literally only guaranteed to be a more expensive option and may have no real benefit to the environment. We signed up before realizing that, and tried to cancel a couple days later. If you find yourself in a similar situation, do not call Mpower to cancel. You will get a letter from PSEG with a special phone number - within the first week of signing up, PSEG can help you completely undo the change. We got there eventually, but first tried calling MPower and their service rep automatically connected us to a general PSEG number that couldn't entirely cancel our account (we would have had to keep MPower for 2 months). read more

When I failed to supply that they returned with their supervisor. 7:45pm and they got a rep to call me, when asked if the salespeople have left the premises, I was instructed to lie and say they had left as they stood in front of my door giving me hand signals on what to say. Finally, I wanted to clarify if they were indeed affiliated with ConEd and that's when the rep apologized for the salespeople not clarifying this and hung up. I almost got tricked into signing up for an independent supplier without my full knowledge and consent. Poor tactics from this company. If they were just upfront on what they're selling I would've really considered it especially as it was a clean energy company. So disappointed in their tactic.
