If you are cautious about Covid, proceed with caution here. I arrived eager to have my first massage since the pandemic began and I was hoping this would become my new regular place. I booked with someone who had great reviews. When I arrived, I noticed that he took off his mask for a few minutes while sitting behind the reception desk, with the masked receptionist a couple feet away. He then put it back on, but with his nose fully exposed. I was appalled but figured surely he must be vaccinated if he would be so careless about masking (and mask-signaling in front of a new client) at a time like this. Just as we were about to enter the tiny, enclosed massage room, I asked directly if he was vaccinated and he said no. (This is someone who would have been eligible both by age and profession a while ago.) I therefore told him I wasn't comfortable proceeding, and I left. He was polite, but this was enormously disappointing both on an immediate personal level and on a public health level. We can't force anyone to get vaccinated but if you're going to work in the closest possible proximity to people -- a tiny, closed-door, windowless room in an old building without any evident special ventilation, laying hands on people with your own face a foot away from theirs, you should be extra-diligent about mask wearing, the main proven deterrent to virus spread. I immediately realized that this individual likely belongs to the so-called alternative health community that has been Covid-skeptical. Not for me. I'll add, on a comparatively minor note, that the intake form also put me off because it asked various paternalistic questions about what kind of physical and mental health wellness goals I have, but in a ridiculous and invasive way. Offer your services and let people ask for what they want; don't pose as some kind of condescending guru collective, especially when you're breaking the most obvious and important rule about wellness in NYC 2021. read more

Massage America is a very clean, basic boutique massage experience. When you walk in the lobby is small, but smells great, very warm and with amazing views of Union Square. My masseuse, Pablo was very gracious and kind. He really listened to the type of massage I needed and even spent extra time since I had so many knots. If you are looking for a great massage with excellent professionals, this is the place to go. If you are looking for a luxury spa experience, this is not it, but it is very clean, warm and inviting. read more

Andrea hands down one of the best. I'm a very active person (athletic conditioning, running,) and I would always come in sore/tight in my legs and upper back and leave feeling much better than when I came in. There are a few trigger points that Andrea works on every time I come in and it's pretty discomforting but it releases a lot of the tension I have. Highly recommend giving him a try. I am not one to get massages normally, but with an increasing performance schedule (i am a dancer) and hitting my workouts hard this as a new years resolution, I felt it became necessary. The 2-for-1 special for new clients was also very appealing. My Therapist was Daniel B. He asked all the right questions regarding why i was getting a massage, and made me feel very comfortable. The pressure was excellent, and i was fully relaxed and even fell asleep for part of it. I did not want the session to end. When it was done, I had a chat with Daniel who was very knowlegeable about the body and my issues. He explained the benefits of massage espeically for someone like me. Mandi, Mandi, Mandi! I was in desperate need of a good massage, and the reviews were mostly positive about this place, so I decided to try it out. I was totally pleased. I booked an appointment with Mandi - she was professional and attentive. She is the type of person where I felt comfortable around her right away. She asked me beforehand what I wanted her to focus on, and she gave all those areas good attention. To address some of the negative reviews about this place - the weird hallway and it's not a spa environment, etc: -it's NOT a spa environment. This place focuses on a good massage at a good price with skilled therapists. It's not the type of place where you're going to drink cucumber water and sit in a fluffy robe. If that's what you're looking for, don't come here. I, personally don't need any of that; I just want a strong massage. -the hallway isn't that weird; all these people need to calm down. -The confirmation email addresses both of these things. After a few misses at more spa-like places in NYC, I found a really great and comfortable massage at Massage America. I do a lot of athletics (triathlons & road races) and have been going to MA for about 2 - 3 years when funds and time allow. Its not a spa experience, and thats what I like about it. I am there to loosen up the body and learn what is going on. I found Andrew to be really great. He is attentive and really cares about your physical well-being. He has rescued me from post race tightness and prepared me for races after over-training. Recommend it for athletes (men & women) looking to add massage therapy to their regiment. read more

I started going to Mpower 2 years ago when I was recovering from a concussion and had the terrible headaches of post-concussive syndrome. The massages focused on the scalp really helped me feel better! Even since I've recovered, I always look forward to getting a massage at Mpower. All of their therapists are excellent. I recently went for my first post COVID massage with Chelsea and so glad that I did - walked out of there in the most relaxed frame of mind. Also felt very safe - everything seemed very sanitary. As an athlete, getting massage is a mandatory piece of taking care of my body. At Massage America, there are many great therapists to choose from, all with a variety of strengths. In fact, getting massage here, helped greatly with a fast recovery of a recent knee surgery that I had. They keep me performing at my best level all during ski season. I can't recommend them highly enough. I've never had problems making appointments by phone. Even if my "regular" is not available, I've always been pleased by the therapists that have been recommended by the office. I've been doing business with them for ten years. read more

First massage was great, so I went back today, had a different massuse. She asked me my problem areas, so I highlighted it was my back and neck. Her massage was purely holding down the pressure points. And not rubbing/ massaging anything. I also requested her for a scalp massage and instead of massaging it, she randomly pressed my head and "hair" (not sure what is productive out of squeezing my hair without touching my scalp) - she also spent 0 time on my hands, feet or legs, and never flipped me over - the whole massage was me laying upside down. I was in need of a massage to help with a bad headache and they saw me right away. They even offered me a buy one get one free for first time customers. I have now been there twice. Here is how I would rate each treatment: My first massage would be rated a B- mostly because (as someone else mentioned already) I did get short change 10-15 minutes but overall it was a good treatment and I left feeling better. My second visit was amazing and would give it an A. I received the full time and my therapist was great she worked all the areas I asked for and I am still enjoying the results a day later. I might be signing up for their membership plan to get a monthly massage. IMO give them a try. read more

as they say, 'i wanted to rate higher.' i get a massage maybe a half dozen times a year, so there's some perspective. i like a front desk person and soothing atmosphere. there isn't a front desk so nobody greets you. i went to two different floors, my fault, and sat in silence until someone opened a door to say someone will be with you, but only until i gave that 'deer in headlights' look. mind you i read the reviews, so i felt prepared. the atmosphere was there, soft music, pillows, fragrant air. the restroom is in the hallway and there's artificial plants around. i was just thinking it's not special. i could see myself using m.a. if i had chronic issues or was a dancer and had found an exceptional masseuse here, i would come all the time. but for a special massage or gift, no. in their defense, there were about a dozen shoes lying around, so they seem to do a bang up business!! my masseuse moved very quickly, not a relaxing start. she asked how i liked the pressure i said well let's see as we get started as moderate pressure to me may be too firm for someone else. she was too firm, it hurt. i told her but she kept slipping back to hard pressure. three times she kicked the table, jolting me from the relaxation i was trying to attain. also my ponytail kept getting bumped. hence the rushing only to finish with 4 minutes to go. also, the air was freezing by the end of the session. again, maybe not a big deal to some, but not what i was looking for. afterwards, she couldn't look me in the eye and frankly, i had a hard time tipping, but of course i did and would never not, but i was disappointed : ( read more

I paid for a 60 minute massage but got a 45 minute massage. When I told the manager afterwards he apologized and said that a few people before me showed up late so that put them behind schedule and that was why she had to stop early. Umm, how is that "my" fault? I showed up on time! If a 60 minute massage is $100 (for instance) then 15 minutes is worth $25! I felt totally ripped off. Gregory cares about the people with whom he deals. If there were ever a mistake made (we're all human after all), Gregory makes the situation to your liking. He broke most of them down and I feel awesome 2 days later. I bought a $39 Lifebooker Loot for a deep tissue massage at Massage America in Union Square. I booked the appointment over the phone, even though they have a website, because apparently the deal is only good for apprentice (new masseuse in training) massages which is not offered on the website. That's fine, I don't mind being a Guinea pig for newbies; after all, we all start somewhere. When asked if I preferred male or female, I said either as long as they have the strength to get my knots out. The guy on the phone chuckled and ended up giving me a female. Admittedly, I was a bit lost when I arrived at the building, but it wasn't the first time I've encountered narrow hallways while going to spa appointments. I finally found the suite, and a sign greeted me at the door: "Please take off your shoes upon entering." Okay that's never happened before, but when I walked in, I understood why: the place is quite small, but it has a namaste feel to it. There was no front desk counter, but as I entered, I saw a small female come and greet me. She turned out to be my masseuse. I was curious as to how such a small person would be able to give a deep tissue massage. As it turns out, she ended up using all of her joints to apply more pressure: knuckles, wrists, elbows (yes, elbows!). They kind of got the job done, but the process was a bit painful. She was also a little chatty, but since the elbows didn't exactly get me into a sleeping mood, I didn't mind. It was clear that she knew what she was talking about though; she knew which muscles were tight and why and spent enough time on them to feel a bit relieved. As for the massage oil, she used organic shea butter and asked me if that was okay. It didn't leave a pleasant fragrance like other massage oils, but I use body butter on a regular basis at home, so I didn't mind. All in all, if the price is right, you might see me here again. read more

I have had many massages in my life, some just OK and some wonderful. I have never until today had one that left me feeling achy and cranky. I am sure that Mandy knows the human body quite well but when she asked me what I wanted worked on and I replied that I don't have any pain and just wanted to relax--well, I guess her concentration was elsewhere. The pain of her digging into my muscles produced the opposite effect; I wound up tense, not relaxed. Let's not even deal with the sharp fingernails. I finally spoke up and she said she would lighten up but I didn't notice any difference. This is the first time I was relieved that the 60 minute massage I booked lasted but 50 minutes. Come to think of it, this was not the Swedish massage I booked, something more like pressure point work, accupressure and Thai stretching. read more

I've had massages by Rachel a few times and each time is amazing. I've been to plenty of places who charge way more but nothing compares to the massages I've had at Massage America. Rachel knows just how to deep to go and really pays attention to what my muscles need. You know when you get a deep tissue massage and the person just goes to town without warming you up? I never have to worry about that. Each time I feel like I've had an effective and relaxing massage. My hip pain is pretty much gone! No. Not worth the time or money to go here. The booking process was easy, but we waited four months for our appointment (after buying a Groupon). We booked for two and when we arrived today after three separate calls over the weekend in which they confirmed the appointment then changed the floor several times, the massages were in different rooms. We specifically requested female masseuses and we had a man and a woman -- something they knew ahead of time, we learned, but failed to mention the several times they called us that weekend. The room was cold and the A/C was on, so it wasn't very comfortable. The masseur left his phone on. The masseuse did not use enough force despite our request for the deepest massage. Just not a relaxing atmosphere or particularly effective massage. They also don't include tax in the Groupon fee, as some businesses do. read more

Would really love to get up to a 5-star rating for this place, but had to knock off a star because the scheduling and time management issues persist. Booked deep tissue massages for myself and my husband this past weekend and arrived at the usual 8-10 mins early, and while my husband's therapist was waiting for us when we arrived, mine was nowhere to be found. She actually arrived 10 mins late, causing my massage to start about 15-20 mins late. Unfortunately her lateness had a domino effect on our schedule for the rest of our day (even with some extra padding, given my experience here thus far), and it's quite frustrating that now all three times we come for a massage, none of them have happened on schedule and we've had several different therapists. I was contacted by the owner upon seeing my previous review and was told that this situation would be addressed and was even offered extra time to be added onto my most recent massage to compensate for time lost on previous massages. And of course, I did not receive that extra time after all because my therapist was late! And I've heard nothing from him since. Again, I still believe the therapists here are top notch. I just wish the respect for and valuing of their client's time was more highly regarded, particularly for those of us who make the effort to arrive on time as requested. read more

Update: I've been to Massage America about 10 times since the beginning of the year. My experiences are always excellent and the prices are very reasonable. I wouldn't even consider going for a massage elsewhere in NYC at this point. In addition to being a fantastic massage therapist, Carlos is also a skilled acupuncturist. Over the course of several months I saw him for acupuncture treatment a few times, sometimes for head/neck pain, others for lower back pain. After 1-2 treatments the pain disappeared completely in each case. I'm really impressed because I have been treated by other acupuncturists over the years with inconsistent results. If you're considering acupuncture treatment definitely give Carlos a try. read more

I really wanted to love the massage from this place... I've been really stressed out lately, plus have been having IT band issues that have been causing me a lot of pain, so I was really looking forward to this massage. I read reviews warning you about the weird hallway leading to the entrance - I was okay with that part - the hallway wasn't that weird. What WAS really weird is that when you enter Massage America's suite, there's no reception desk and no one there to greet you, so I just sort of stood there awkwardly for about five minutes until a therapist (mine, coincidentally) came out randomly and found me. And yeah, the water that they offer you out of those glasses? Totally weird, as other reviewers have mentioned. The massage itself was good, albeit a little rough (although I'm pretty sure I should have expected that much from a deep tissue massage, so that's probably my fault), but I would have enjoyed a more spa-like experience... you know, a nice robe, a pair of slippers, maybe. The room was a little cold (I had to ask for a blanket and for the heating pad on the table to be turned up) and could have done with some candles or something to add some ambiance. And afterwards, I was left all greased up and told to get dressed. There weren't even any towels or anything to try and de-grease with. It's not like I would have felt comfortable showering there, but something would have been nice... I had to make do with some rubbing alcohol and tissues (can you say ew?), which didn't even come close to doing the trick. So yeah... all in all, not as great as I hoped, although I did only pay $39 for an hour, because I bought a Lifebooker deal. I probably won't be going back here. read more

Lauren Hauser gave me an incredible massage! I've been a professional dancer for 17 years and had lots of bodywork to deal with the related pains, strains, and injuries. This was one of the best massages I've ever had. I think she used a combination of Thai massage and deep tissue. Seriously, this woman has a gift! She found and released spots on me I didn't even know were sore. I've been having new pain and mobility issues after a car accident last year, and I left our session able to move my neck and walk without pain which hasn't happened in a long time.
