But from time to time I get shin splints and in general I think I have weaker shins. So I looking for other ways to get exercise and stay fit that wouldn't be putting so much pressure on my shins, until I can start my PT treatments. I luckily came across April and Charlene From the moment I walked in, I was welcomed and felt like I belonged in the community. Everyone was so friendly and positive. I absolutely love April's energy and her positive, fun personality She always makes me laugh in class and makes sure to encourage everyone at all levels. I have taken Zumba classes many times before and I've enjoyed them, but I've never met people like April and Charlene who were just so down to earth and personable and made me feel so comfortable and right at home Last week we did a fun XMas playlist which was super cute and incorporated great moves, and working different parts of our bodies. I love how April incorporates core and muscle work into her songs I always end up leaving the class smiling and in a better mood then when I started, so that's definitely good thing! Not to mention that post workout glow I really wish April taught more Zumba classes during the week. I would definitely go to her 3x/week for Zumba if that was an option!!

Great instructor, pleasant workout experiences so far, and very close to my residence.read more

There is no margin for error. The scan goes to a facility that makes them specifically for you. I forgot the exact amount, but they're in the neighborhood of $300. Call them to double check. Again, these are custom tailored just for you. A very knowledgeable chiropractor with probably over 3 decades of experience helps you personally with the process. He's great! He's the only one who fits your orthotics. This is for anyone who has challenges with their alignment because of their feet. Ex: You receive chiropractic, osteopathic manual therapy, PT or massage therapy and no matter what you feel the treatment doesn't hold up. You know your somatic practitioner is amazing but your feet are preventing the treatments from fully helping you. Or you just have serious problems standing on your feet. I'm both. I receive monthly osteopathic treatment from my Osteopath. A doctor in a hospital. Though not an MD, a DO takes the same amount of schooling. A DO can prescribe medication and they can perform surgery just like an MD. They are not Nurse practitioners. Or PTs. My osteopath specializes in manual therapy. I highly recommend getting orthotics here. It's a great office. If I weren't seeing my osteopath, I would consider seeing the chiropractor who fit my orthotics. He's also the trainer of the gym. The gym is probably great for someone who lives nearby with alignment issues. Great overall environment.

He would also just sort of walk away while we were counting reps, so I never knew when to start/stop. One time I caught him stretching with his eyes closed when I thought he was watching my form. I also felt fat-shamed, even though I clearly explained up front that I've struggled with eating disorders for years. (Believe me, I already hate myself and feel ashamed, I don't need his help!) I guess some people like it a lot. Honestly, at 62, I felt I was too young too be there! Very nice building and location and friendly support staff. I went about 3-4 times and just didn't go back. No follow-up BTW, even though I am still owed sessions.

I do have a couple negatives that I would like to get out-of-the-way first however. The gym is DARK. Black floors, black ceilings, mostly black walls. Then add dim lighting. It wasn't always like this. It used to be fairly bright and cheerful. I'm not sure what vibe they're going for here. But it's just strange. Even the locker rooms are dark. Add to this the fact that they mostly play house or techno music. It's almost like you're inside of a nightclub. Not a dealbreaker by any means. The gym is absolutely huge. One of the larger planet fitness locations I have been to. It's spread out by very nicely and they have more equipment and machines than the typical planet fitness gym as far as I can tell. The place is very clean and appears to be well managed. All the equipment I used work properly. Of course they have long gotten rid of Olympic weights and bench presses and all that. But there's still a wide variety of weights and machines to fit just about any work out. The dumbbells top out at 75 pounds which is pretty typical for planet fitness. For the price, very hard to be beat. And overall, it's a really good location.

Being a really aggressive, type A personality, I have felt the urge to maul someone at least once a…read moreday since I was 4. Since middle school until the end of college I tried lifting weights, running competitively, dancing, cycling, hiking, every kind of yoga available in the valley (and that's a lot of yoga!), and a myriad of other group exercise classes including spinning, boot camps, kickboxing, step aerobics, and interval training, (sometimes attending 2-3 different classes per day), in attempt to take my edge off and feel normal. The result was: I got in moderately good shape, had a nice toned, lean body, learned about a lot of different facilities in the area, and even learned new moves and techniques that served me well, and still do from time to time. However, I was never able to use any of these outlets to push myself to the extent that I wanted to. I often became bored, and uninterested. I would leave my workouts feeling winded and sweaty, but unfulfilled, irritated, and still bubbling over with a fiery type of energy that made me want to crawl out of my skin. I would spend the rest of the day picking fights with everyone around me, and sometimes even throwing inanimate objects around my house. It wasn't until I joined PVCF, and started attending at least 3-4 workouts a week that this behaviour subsided. Now, not only are there less broken things, and cops showing up at my house, but I am stronger, leaner, and more nimble than I have ever been. I am learning new things, and improving a little more each day. Just yesterday, I was finally able to coordinate my feet well enough to climb a rope. A few weeks before that, something else clicked, and I got a little better at double-unders. For most, attending first WODs at PVCF is a new social situation where you don't know anyone, most of the moves and techniques are completely new to you, very challenging, and you have to perform in front of a room of beautiful, healthy strangers. Fortunately, self-confidence and humility you didn't even know you had will emerge from this experience, and make you a better person. Additionally, having to say "hi" to people you don't know on a daily basis, and learning their names will expand your social skills and community network. Learning where all of the equipment is, how to use it, how to efficiently set it up, and put it back will increase your assertiveness (as you have to ask those around you for tips and info, etc.) Going through the sometimes painstaking process of learning your numbers (the amount of weight you're lifting) keeping track of all of this and writing it down, knowing your reps, is all part of an empowering self indulgent experience that will be unlike any other part of your life. This is where you gain drive, motivation, and competitiveness that you might not have found within yourself before. As you can see, it's really a holistic fitness experience that rivals any other I've experienced here in the five college area. Not to mention there's convenient parking, gorgeous bathrooms and showers, plenty of equipment, room to put your stuff, and access to nutritional support. The management is constantly tailoring the schedule to fit members needs, and rearranging things to improve the space. Also, there are crazy stereotypes running around out there that crossfitters and crossfit trainers are just a bunch of jocks who think that crossfit is the be all end all of the world. This isn't true. Crossfitters are a diverse group of people including kids, tweens, artists, veterans, first responders, colleges students, and people of all shapes and sizes, and all fitness levels. If you are looking for a gym, definitely give it a try before automatically going up the street to BigBox Globo-Fitness, and bring a friend!

Crossfit is many things. It's technical definition is "constantly varied, if not randomized, functional movements performed at high intensity." When I'm asked what crossfit is, I usually tell people it's a mixture of sprint work, gymnastics, and weightlifting. More than that though, it's a community. It's a group of people who are consciously saying no to plodding away on a treadmill at some globo-gym, never seeing the results they so desire. It's about finding within yourself the ability to do hard things and to relish in overcoming obstacles. It's a great gym, full of good, motivated, and supportive people.

The weight room is small but they have a good variety of free weights. I've gone at many different times, early in the mornings, later in the evening, and in late afternoon. At times it can be busy, but I think there is one major thing that cancels our the at-times busy-ness for me -- people there are SO nice. I know that another local "gym" calls themselves the judgement-free zone, but this Y is truly a comfortable place to work out. I've had nothing but positive interactions with people of all ages and cultural backgrounds - both staff and members - in the front desk area, in the weight room, cardio room and pool area, and in the locker room. I was searching to see if there were any deals right now because I had a membership for about 4 months last year and I was really surprised to see the negative reviews on here and I don't think they're warranted. If you want a reasonably priced facility with many different services to help you stay in shape, this is a great local spot for folks in the pioneer valley.
