Jeff, you did my girl wrong, and it's not ok to take advantage of females. Imagine if she didn't…read morehave me to talk "tech" with you. Hate to say it, but the guys a hack as a mechanic. He might be a good motorcycle painter, I have no idea, because we didn't need a motorcycle painted. But, he doesn't know what a crankshaft pulley is, or how to work a floor jack to support an engine when you remove the side motor mount to swap a serp belt on a Honda in the driveway... He's just trying to get the trip charge and diag fee. I waited a few years before posting this, so if you can believe it, this is my more thoughtful, peaceful review trying to stick to the facts, and leave emotion out. The ones I started typing two years ago were more scathing. Want more details? Read on.... My girl's car broke down near Medford. Symptoms were a loud noise like a screeching belt, and smoke from under the hood, and a bunch of lights came on on the dash. I'm a shadetree mechanic, but I was in Florida, unable to help, so I went to work trying to find a competent mechanic. Obviously I knew it was a serp belt related issue. I called him, and he talked a great game on the phone! We discussed that it could be as simple as a bad belt, or possibly one of the accessories (Alt, PS pump, water pump or tensioner) locked up causing the issue. I understood. Of course, Honda has the serpentine belt setup where you have to remove the motor mount to install a new belt, and I get it. We discussed this (because I brought it up), and he said it wouldn't be a problem. He said there was a charge to come out and look (maybe $240? - some of that for travel expense), and then he could give us a more detailed estimate once he got his hands on it. He confirmed he has lots of parts suppliers so once he got it diagnoses, he should be able to get 'normal' parts same day. I get it, you don't know what you've got until you get into it. I gave the green light for the diag, and asked him to call me when he got there so I can make the call. Long story short, he came out, cut the serp belt with a knife (he didn't think of cutting it off - I had to ask him to do it), spun the acessories, and said he didn't feel any issues with the accessories, but he couldn't be sure there was not a problem with them (fair). After cutting the belt he said the Alt, water pump, and PS pump turned easily, and the tensioner had a little play but he didn't think it was a major issue.Where I knew he was a hack, is he said he thought the issue was the oil pump pulley. Reason being, it was the only pulley he couldn't turn by hand. I was like.... "Do you mean the ... CRANKSHAFT?". He's like, yeah, the one that drives the oil pump. Still thinking he's competent, I asked him if it would turn with a socket, and if it turned smoothly.. He's like "I don't know I tried to turn it by hand.. Lemme try with a socket". He said "yeah, the oil pump pulley does turn with a socket... ". I'm like "Is it turning smoothly, or does it feel 'chunky'?" (I've figured out he's clueless, so I'm treating him like a 10 year old with a ratchet..) He says it turns smoothly.... That's when he told my girl he wouldn't be able to put it back together because he'll need a lift to install a new belt on account of the engine mount.... Man, I could do that **** on my back in the driveway with a $20 Harbor freight bottle jack! If I wasn't thousands of miles away... He recommended she have the car towed to his "friend" that has a full shop with a lift to install the belt. Yeah, no thanks. So, He understood the job clearly, We discussed the specific issue of needing to remove the motor mount to install a new belt, and that was the reason he gave for not being able to do anything more than cutting the belt off with a darn knife and spinning the pulleys by hand. NOT TO MENTION, HE DOESN"T SEEM TO KNOW WHAT A CRANK PULLEY IS. To his credit, he was extremely effective at confirming what I told him on the phone, and making sure that my girl's car was LESS able to move under it's own power than when he arrived, and fleecing her out of a few hundred bucks. I bet he gets a lot of "trip charges" and his friend with a real shop gets plenty of referrals. I've worked in the auto industry off and on for many years, and every painter I've ever met ain't right in the head. I think it's all the fumes. This one's no different. Total joker. If anyone really understands how to wrench, I expect all the things I've said will be a fun comical read. For us, it was just a waste of time and money. That's why I never trusted mobile mechanics. There's a reason they don't have a physical shop. I was going to let it go, but my girl asked me to post a review because she said I write good reviews, and she was worried other females might get taken for the same ride. The summation of this saga was we got the car towed ($$$) to another mechanic, who put a new serp belt on the car, and it drove 4000 miles to FL with no more issues....
