I couldnt be more grateful for the work that Mountain Pet Rescue does. In particular, Susan worked with me and matched me with my perfect dog. Thank you so much Mountain Pet Rescue! You gave me the best gift ever!

First day found - taken at vets in New Mexico.

Exceptional rescue! On vacation I found a dog in the desert who was near death. I took it to the nearest vet, two hours away. The poor thing was probably only 10 months old, had already had a litter, and was thrown out on the side of a road. I took on getting her free of ticks, fleas, and worms and fed her every two hours. Then MPR stepped in and arrange for transport and fostering. This poor creature who was so ill and totally abandoned, will have all her medical bills paid for by the rescue and receive training from a professional trainer. She will be placed in a foster home until she is rehabilitated enough to be ready for adoption. Then a photographer will take photos and the rescue will vet potential forever-homes. I've never found such a well resourced rescue! Oh, did I mention they found a pilot to volunteer to fly down to to New Mexico and pick up the dog from me? Amazing, Amazing Amazing!!!!! Thank you Susan and Sybil!

Well, we did change his name, though…read more Max to Maxx to honor the dog named for the meeting room we met in.;-) And he just requested we add another name so he is MISO HAPPY. Because he is. I am, too. ;) Room 19 on 4/19, Patriots' Day. Ortensio as the male version of Ortensia, the hyacinth flower name from the Humane Colorado woman who is from Barcelona. Ortensia orchestrated my having first visit with Maxx. The couple who signed in before me as I was negotiating finding a shoe substitute (it took me awhile) kindly said "He's yours." How right they were. How right was Ortensia. And Miso for the soup I was to deliver but the friend was too sick so I went to the Humane Society instead. Six year old Maxx entered the room. After 5 days of yapping at visitors he quietly sat at my feet for a bit ....and then jumped into my arms and fell asleep as I patted him. With a calm reserve. Welcome home, Maxx! You are safe and well loved. Thank you Ortensia, Jason, the couple, and everyone at Humane Colorado. Maxx says hey and thank you!

We adopted our Boston Terrier, Stella, from the Buddy Center in Castle Rock back in Nov 2012 as a 11month old. She is now 13! We got so lucky as someone else was visiting her when we arrived. Back then you could put a wish list if a breed online and would be contacted if one came in to one of the shelters. Not anymore but we loved that feature. We found a stray Boston Terrier puppy a few years ago and took her to DDFL to see if so anyone lost a pet and since she bonded with us and our other Boston overnight, we asked them please please contact us if no one claims her, and a week or two later we were contacted and then had to adopt her. She is now called Beans and is about 4 years old. We sadly had to put down our 11 year old Bassethound a year prior to adopting our Beans, and took him to DDFL. The hardest thing ever to do, and he was my first pet. They were great with us, let us take a lot of time to say goodbyes. I only wish we were allowed back during the euthanasia, I really didn't like just sending him off like that. They do offer you ashes and paw prints after as well which was very nice.

I had lived in the Denver metro area since the early 90's and am very familiar with the shelters…read moreand rescues in the area. Years ago I had put in an application with Safe Harbor, and my application was approved to meet dogs. I ended up finding my dog at a local shelter before finding one through Safe Harbor. However, I have continued to receive their monthly email, and have always considered them when thinking about adopting. At the time when I was looking, the people who volunteered for Safe Harbor were friendly, warm, engaging people. Unfortunately, this has changed, and Safe Harbor has also now changed my perspectives on rescues at this point. After moving to Utah a few years ago, I have become familiar with shelters and rescues here. Last week, my dog and I had arranged a meet and greet with a dog in a shelter twice. They played together in the yard at the shelter, and we took them both on a walk at the park next to the shelter. I went home to think about adopting him, and when I returned to the shelter's webpage, he was gone. Safe Harbor pulled him from the shelter. I contacted Safe Harbor, and let them know my dog and I had met this dog several times and asked if he was available. I filled out their application. When I finally received a response, it was very rude, stating that yellow labs are popular and they have several people that have wanted one that are already approved adopters. So Safe Harbor takes dogs from no-kill shelters to fulfill someone's wish? In addition, they did not even offer to help me look for another dog within their organization. I contacted Safe Harbor multiple times and they refused to respond. I had no idea that Safe Harbor is more of a dog matching agency, and is not in rescue for the right reasons. Taking dogs from a no-kill shelter where a dog will be adopted is very different than what a true rescue does. Safe Harbor may want to rethink their mission statement. "To rescue, provide a high level of compassionate care and successfully rehome stray, abandoned or surrendered Labrador Retrievers giving priority to those in Colorado."

Their adoption coordinators make a huge effort to insure a perfect match between adoptable dogs and their families. When we adopted her July of 2011, thanks to David S.'s recommendation, she was just over a pound and tiny. The vet said he doubted she was a full eight weeks and she was a tad underweight but she had been spayed and her little baby belly had a little tiny stitch in it which healed nicely. She had a little bit of a goopy eye that she got drops for and it cleared up. Our vet gave her the initial exam for free because she was a rescue and gave her a clean bill of health. We began the fatten-up-baby-Leeloo project and now she is still small, but her proper, almost adult weight. Let's just say, she is the prefect match for our family and my heart is warmed every single time I see her especially when she crawls on my chest to wake me in the morning to point out the fact she is a Supreme Being - the Fifth Element and needs chicken. I hardly remember life without her now.

We applied that night, someone reached out within a couple of hours, and by the next day, he was a part of our family. We've had him for two weeks, and he's amazing. So nice to have the dogs in foster care before you get them. It allows the foster to really get to know the dog's personality better than if they're in a shelter, so they can help match the right dog to the right person/family. Love our sweet Gaucho!

WE ARE SO FURIOUS!! AN ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE SHELTER. DO NOT RESCUE FROM HERE…read more My mom had applied to adopt a cat from this place over two weeks ago. The director said the cat she was interested in wasn't up for adoption yet and she would have to wait. After many days of my mom calling and talking to the lady she basically said that the cat was already hers she just had to wait for him to be available. Today my mom called the shelter again and the director said THAT THEY GAVE THE CAT AWAY!!!! my mom was so devastated. We just lost our family dog and she was so excited and looking forward to getting a new cat. The director said it was because they had heard my mom say she was going to make it an outdoor cat, WHICH IS COMPLETELY FALSE. first, my mom would never do that. She specifically wants a cuddly indoor kitty as a companion, second the shelter specifically said she cant have an outdoor cat and my mom agreed with that part of the contract. It makes absolutely no sense. I could tell from the very beginning something was off about this rescue and I was right. I'm not sure what they're doing over there but whatever it is it's not good. We will probably be getting in contact with a lawyer. DO NOT ADOPT FROM HERE!!!

The shelter itself is an open concept (minus cats who must be separated) and I think that's pretty neat. You get to see the cats in an environment they're used to and they become comfortable/social with humans. You can also check out their personality and see if they fit well with you. The staff working here are kind/you can tell they enjoy what they do! They answer questions and walk you through the very easy adoption process. In comparison to other places, I noticed the adoption fee was about 100$ less, so that is cool. I adopted Spud - also known as " The profesor" ( the name they gave him) last February and he has become a lovely addition to my pet family. He came with a bag of the food they were feeding him, a blanket and some coupons. It took him some time to adjust, I suspect he might've been feral prior to coming to CCS (His left ear is clipped- which I think is TNR program?) but once he did he is the best companion. He also gets along with my senior cat well. The cats here are socialized, sweet and there's tons to check out. Someone for anyone - if you're looking/ready to take that step. I recommend!
