Should have stumbled in here sooner. I have driven by it many times in the past but was always on the way to something else. This past weekend I was going to breakfast down the way, and had some time to kill with the wait so wondered on down. This is a GREAT local music shop with small venue in the back. So many instruments and a very cozy/warm atmosphere. The converted house is the perfect building for this type of business. The owner (or one of them?) was quick to greet us and show us around the place. I tried out a couple of vintage instruments when I was there and he was very knowledgeable and informative about what I was playing. Looking forward to coming back for a live performance at sometime. They seem to have routine jam sessions as well as touring musicians stopping by the place. read more

Truly a hidden gem in midtown! We stopped by Mountain Music Parlor one day on a quest for used vinyl records. We rang the doorbell and were greeted by one of the owners, Don, and his dog LadyBug. Don informed us that if we were looking for records, we were in the wrong place but told us to come check out what they DID have. Mountain Music Parlor is a cute little shop filled with all sorts of instruments. So many that you'll have to go see for yourself including endless ukuleles, cricket violins, guitars, and more. The most amazing thing about Don was that no matter what obscure musical instrument or accessory we asked about, Don had it! From cajons to violin mutes. He also showed us the performance room where they have different jam sessions including Celtic nights, Old Time, Cowboy, Aloha Ukulele, Open Mic, and Bluegrass. They also have music lessons available for various instruments. I'm so glad to have stumbled upon Mountain Music Parlor and will definitely be getting all of my musical knick knacks from them for the foreseeable future. Wow! We stopped by Mountain Music while doing an urban hike around the area to check out the street art. Renee, Donald & their dog, Ladybug, sold my husband a bass uke. Their shop focuses on folk, bluegrass & traditional american music instruments so they have banjos, guitars, dulcimers, and mandolins but also much much more kit to go with! Straps, cases, stands, metronomes, sheet music, etc. Very sweet people making musicians sound sweeter!! read more

This place is such an unknown gem in Reno. We recently attended a kid's music class (Denielle's Musical Wheel) for our 17-month-old daughter. It was so much fun to meet all the other tots, and parents, and sing/dance/play instruments for 50 minutes. The best part is that they are learning all genres of music from classic kids songs to pop and more. Even my hubby had a great time singing along. Not only is this class highly recommended even after one visit, but the venue also hosts various artists for jam sessions or concerts and offers instrument lessons. I'm so excited to go to our daughter's next class as this place and her teacher will help her experience all that music has to offer. read more

What a great shop! Not your usual electric guitar/amps/drum kits, etc kind of place. It's an eclectic collection of acoustic instruments, some of which I'd never seen before, lots of books and fantastic, friendly service as well as all kinds of lessons. Besides that, they have jams and shows in their own little theater. I found their prices good and their service excellent. they answer any questions I have cheerfully and completely. This is my go to music shop for instruments and lessons. I love the personalized service and generally happy mood there. read more

How did i not know about this hidden gem in my city? Admittedly writing this review with a huge delay, but my health has had me preoccupied. The tickets are very reasonable, they offer bites and sips but not at crazy high prices... in fact they don't have any set prices for this!!!! Its on a donation system. The owners are amazing! Interesting, engaging, and treat everyone like family. I wad so completely impressed by them, their knowledge, friendliness, and support of the arts. There is no bad seat in the concert hall. You ate literally up close and personal with the artists, who also take time to talk to the patrons and ate incredibly personable. This entire experience was absolutely amazing. I'm very impressed with this store. Rene, the owner, warmly greeted us when we entered. Her personality and knowledge is what made this visit very amazing. When we told her we were looking for a ukulele, and that we were novices, she never tried to use that against us to make money or treat us like we were ignorant of music. The only thing that came from our interactions with her, was how much she loved music. She talked about the magic of the different sounds of the different ukuleles, and by the end of the conversation I had learned to hear what she heard. She's a great teacher. She also has a great selection of unique brands, some no longer being made, some directly from Hawaii that she hand picked for their uniqueness. We left with a new ukulele, a pineapple style designed for Daniel Ho. We will be back to join the ukulele club that Rene mentioned! read more

When I decided to take up ukulele lessons, I went straight to this local gem of a business where I met Rene, the owner. Rene was fantastic - she spent over an hour with me, showing me the different ukuleles and strumming them for me so that I could hear the difference between the instruments. Rene helped me pick out a beautiful, zebra-wood Concert size. She gave me a quick history of the ukulele - did you know that Portuguese immigrants introduced the ukulele to Hawaii? Rene even showed me a few chords to get me started. I really appreciated this personalized service - something you wouldn't get at more commercial businesses. And, Rene is such a sweet and fun spirit. I can't wait to "jam" with her and participate in her get-togethers. read more

This is my first ever yelp review so you know it's serious. On top of that, I hate to write this review because I love the purpose of Mountain Music Parlor. I think it is a great business for small community events around music. With that said, I have had a terrible experience with the owner. She really REALLY did me dirty. Let me explain. My parents got me a $60 gift card to Mountain Music Parlor last Christmas (Christmas 22'). I had a full year to use as it expired on December 20th of 2023. Cool. I was away at school in the midwest so I don't check out the place till the fall. So I go in sometime in November and she is frantically running around. She explains she has a meeting in 10 minutes, but I can look around for a little till she has to leave. I get people are busy, especially small business owners so I don't think much of it. I leave soon after, planning to come back at a different time. I come back early December... same story. She has to leave even though it's 11 am on one of her open days. Again, I get it/let it slide. I come back a 3rd time, place is closed even though it says it is supposed to be open. AGAIN, I let it go. I really do get that people/small business owners are busy/frantic - especially around the holidays. The FOURTH time I come back, it is on the day that my gift card expires. I walk in, things are calm, she asks me what I am looking for or if I need any help. I tell her I have a gift card and it expires today. She says "Oh well you better use that". I second that notion ma'am. The parlor has many cool vintage items to look through. I am not much of a musician so I figure I'll use my $60 to pick out some cool things that strike my fancy. I spend 30 mins perusing and picking my items. She takes them from my hand each time I choose something (maybe for fear of me stealing/maybe because I am younger?) Whatever, I know vintage shops do this. Okay bear with me, I am almost done. So I finish up and walk over to her desk where she takes out her handwritten notes and documentations. I give her my gift card (which is a piece of cardstock paper) and she starts looking through last years notes on when my gift card was purchased. As she is browsing she tells me I have interesting taste. I take that as a compliment. She gets to the documentation of my gift card purchased last year and proceeds to tell me it has already been redeemed. I tell her that can't be the case - I simply haven't redeemed it nor have I had the damn chance. She tells me my gift card paper "looks like it has been around the block"; Insinuating I somehow already used it and am trying to use it again. Not only would I never steal or try to pull a fast one on somebody, I would never do it to a small local business. I tell her I am confused. She tells me she can't do anything about it because then it is hurting her business. I tell her my parents bought this last year so I have had the paper for a year (trying to say no wonder the card looks like it has been around the block, it has). She tries to look up what my parents used to buy it with, but since they bought it with cash she can't verify??? I don't even know. Defeated and not really knowing what to say, I kindly and calmly walk out. On my drive home I was thinking I wish I fought harder, but truly what was I supposed to do. So here I am, writing my first ever yelp review and sadly, it is a negative one. read more

My husband and I found Mountain Music Parlor on a date night a couple months ago. We parked near here and we were walking over to Arario while they were playing guitar out front. We stopped to listen, ended up chatting for quite a while with Renee. We chatted for about half an hour and I mentioned really wanting to learn guitar. She made a recommendation for me to take lessons with one of their teachers and I kept the information. I reached out to him and we set up lessons. My first lesson was tonight. It was awesome! My fingers are still sore but I feel like my dream of learning to play guitar is within my reach. He made some recommendations for my guitar (replacing rusted strings...) and gave me some homework before our next lesson. I am so excited! This is a cool place and they are offering exactly what I needed to get started playing guitar. read more

Just happened across this hidden jewel of a music store while trying to find a parking space in Midtown. Wow! What a find it was! They have so many different acoustic instruments in in stock that it was totally fun to look around at everything. Of particular interest to me were their harmonicas, and they have a better selection than any shop I've visited in years! From high-end Seydels, Suzukis and Tombos to entry-level and inexpensive blues harmonicas, they have a great selection! They also have a great selection of Ukuleles(from Soprano to tenor), and they are all reasonably priced. There are also some very eclectic and interesting folk instruments, and I appreciate them promoting this fading genre of music. So today I have recovered from my (positive) shock in discovering this musical heaven, and am letting you know that, if you are into any kind of acoustic music...or if you've had an interest in anything about it, MMP is a must-visit music shop. I should add that the owners Renee and Don are the most friendly, informative, and welcoming store owners I've crossed paths with in a long time. Wonderful. Check 'em out! read more

This place is incredible! A rarity and a gem. They have a ton of rare and beautiful and unique acoustic instruments. Renee was patient and helpful as I slowly played through a ton of instruments. I ended up getting a concert ukelele, which I am very happy about. But they have so much more than just their huge collection of ukes-- they have beautiful guitars and banjos, violins, dobros, a huge variety, all well crafted and some local instruments as well. Vocal lessons in various styles are available too. There is even a small music store dedicated to acoustic music! In addition, the MMP is a great space for recitals and intimate concerts featuring local, regional, national and international musicians. Recently they featured Reno's own The Novelists , The Reno Swing Set and Italy's world renown Guitarist Beppe Gambetta, all to sold out audiences. I moved to Reno last winter and decided I wanted to take banjo lessons. Rene from Mountain Music Parlor set me up with Rick Sparks and he has turned out to be a great teacher. In addition, Mountain Music Parlor is just a great place to be around. I have been to several of their bluegrass jams and really enjoyed them. It is truly a wonderful community of people who all love traditional forms of music and who love to meet others who feel the same way. I walked in looking for a ukulele, and Mountain Music Parlor had such a great selection, I needed help searching for the right one. Rene helped me to do that. There I was, rummaging through the store for everything -but- a ukulele, and she steered me right--even as my mind strayed and an hour into my shopping I had decided, "I'm going to buy a guitar!" Yet she wasn't frustrated with my indecision. In fact, she was more than helpful, guiding me through the vast selection of guitars she had. Yet it wasn't until she informed me that a quality guitar would not fare well for travel, due to the wood drying out, that she asked me, "you came in here for a ukulele right?" I answered, "yes." "Then that's what you should get." So I did! Other interesting instruments you may find are Native American flutes, harps, and mountain dulcimers (an instrument you can't hardly find anywhere!)
