I really enjoy visiting Mountain Mikes Custom Leather in Idyllwild. My family, kids enjoy every visit we make at his place. He looks like the American Frontiersman that just came down the mountain but is so nice to the kids and speaks perfect Spanish and even can change his tone to distinguish those from Central America like El Salvador and Honduras! I went to mountain mikes on April 9th and really liked the store. I saw the awesome custom work he personally does and really liked it. I saw a Damascus blade there I really liked and asked mike if he can make a handle and knife sheath. I told him I wanted the handle from deer antler. Mike measured my hand pulled out a crate of antlers and I picked one I liked and would fit my hand. I went today (May 5th) to pick it up and I couldn't have been more pleased with it. The knife and handle are amazing and the custom sheath is bad ass. The combination is awesome. I now have a custom knife no one else will have and I will pass this on to my youngest son when I get old and can't grab a hold of it (hopefully never). I have purchased different items from mike and they are all top notch quality read more

I don't know why so many people have given Mike 5 stars. I was very unsatisfied with his services. I hired him to make a holster for my pistol, as well as a ammo pouch that fits on my belt. I brought in the pistol for him to observe and model. We were very specific about the design for the product and we came to an agreement. I was very specific about the design and style for the ammo pouch too, and even brought in a Nylon version I was fond of for him to observe, hold in his hands and model I paid 50% of the cost of parts and labor upfront, with plans to pay the other 50% when I returned to obtain the product. However, when I returned, I observed that he made something quite different for the ammo pouch and I just think he forgot completely about our conversation, the agreement, and the model. Naturally I objected to the product he made. Although it was a very skilled and wonderful product, it wasn't what I ordered. The style was different and didn't function with the same amount of ease as the nylon version I wanted him to model after. The holster wasn't quite right either. It fit my gun, but the section of the holser where the handle met the leather went out way too far so i could only draw the pistol with my pinky finger. We were very specific that this would not be the case at the time I placed my order. So then there was another return trip, and since I was driving from Temecula at the time, the round trip cost was at least $30.00. When I returned a week later, he had made, yet another mistake on the holster. I had paid a high price for the holster to begin with, but he charged me an additional $25.00 to modify the holster to the original order. UGH! So I had to make yet another trip and come back a week later, costing another $30.00 round trip in gas money. The phone case I bought was great. The magazine holsters were a little tight and required some stretching, even though these magazines were brought in at the original time of order to model after. Long story short, $30.00 extra trip + $30.00 extra trip + $25.00 extra charge that shouldn't have ever been there, total of $85.00 extra cost incurred to me because of his mistakes. NOT COOL. Years later I took the holster to another leather craftsman in Temecula to fix the holster again, because Mike designed the holster with a little 'snag' that would catch when trying to draw the pistol rapidly. This was yet another $25.00. Now the total extra cost incurred to me was $110.00 for Mike's mistakes. I will not do business with him anymore. Too expensive, and too many mistakes...too much time and $$, gas $$, repair $$. Mike is overpriced, and full of himself, and he costs his customers a ton of extra cash due to his repeated errors in craftsmanship. -Jeff read more

Man! What a cool little store! There's badass leather work in here, but I am poor, so I bought some leather conditioner for my belts, bag straps and such that Mike makes himself. I also got a cool woven bracelet on the cheap, and my wife bought a dream catcher for her car mirror (making it her third such object, and though I find them ridiculous, this is the best one yet). When I asked the employee (not Mike) about the leather conditioner (which comes in a little tub like pomade), he demonstrated how to apply it, and we had this exchange: Him: "just rub a little on with your fingers whenever you notice the leather looking dry." Me: "Oh! Kinda like Chap Stick!" (which I had been addicted to in the dry air of the high desert, so it was certainly on the brain, and looked the part. And what can I say? I like a good simile) Him: "No, it's for leather. You don't want to put it on your lips." I tried to explain myself, but failed, and trailed off. Paid cash to avoid the CC transaction fee, and we were on our way. Anyway, cool little spot! check it out! p.s. - I gave this $$$, but it's all fairly priced for what you're buying. Leather goods should be expensive. But the smaller items, and non-leather stuff is affordable. read more

Mountain Mike's artistry is surreal. AND.... I can't live without his lip balm and SPF moisturizer. Highest quality natural ingredients, simple, and embedded with with rare bits of knowledge that he has acquired over the years in the natural world.... I know a lot about skin care and he really impressed me with his recipe and enlightened me to one particular ingredient that i didn't even know existed. The moisturizing SPF is so soothing; it hydrates, brightens and plumps my skin, and is very calming. It actually makes for a lovely primer to make up.
