I got to come here on a visitors pass while some family members were staying and honestly.. it was great. If I was in a different place in life, I would become a member with my boys. The fishing is peaceful and awesome (not much of a challenge for those who prefer natural water but for kids it was a blast), the whole area is so clean and well taken care of, and the best part? The other campers. The people that we met were so friendly and incredibly kind, it's sad how much that means in this day and age. We were with a group of young boys who have never filleted a fish in their own but they were welcome to watch the more experienced people with no judgement and when it came time to step up and try it themselves, an older gentleman got out of his car to show them the ropes. I wish I knew who this man was so I could send him a thank you card. We had a great time and would love to visit again.

Backing right up getting ready for a beautiful holiday weekend overlooking the lake

What a timeshare! From generations to generations, my family has been coming to Mountain Lakes and it's never a disappointment. Started off with my Mom owning a membership soon after my family grew. My kids had kids, and it was time to get a RV of my own for the grandkids. Over two decades of fun, laughter, and family memories. They are always adding and changing things up from wrestling, bingo for kids and adults, golf cart, parades, spectacular Halloween events, and more! Thank you, Mountain Lakes!

I love Mountain Lakes! I have been visiting mountain lakes since I was a kid and being a member now and to be able to take my family up is wonderful. I have so many memories with my grandparents and now I get to share those with my family. The park has definitely been upgraded over the years and is well taken care of. Very family oriented with the 3 different pools splash pad for the lil ones is pretty awesome as well as there miniature golf course and the amount of activities that are done through out the day the keep the kids off the phones and exploring nature. Not to mention the beautiful lakes. Nothing like a trip up to Mountain Lakes!

    How much

How much do they charge here to stay in a tent overnight?

In July of 2019 rates had gone up from $60 a night to $80 a night per site for guests at Mountain Lakes.

Firepits are allowed but only chemical logs like Duraflame or propane may be used. Absolutely NO wood fires!

    How big are the campsites?

They vary. We have been members since 1985 and started with a camper van and tent. We graduated to a 26 foot travel trailer and recently a 36 foot 5th wheel. We have always found sites to meet our needs and have never regretted our membership. If… Read more

Upon arriving, we discovered the road within the campsite was narrow and very hard to maneuver the 27 ft trailer we had. We had to back the trailer into space 32 and let me tell you it was very HARD. Not enough clearance for tundra truck to maneuver into the site. We ended up having the trailer on the dirt and pavement, and at an angle to fit. This campground is not recommended for anything over 15 feet in my opinion. Also keep in mind it has zero hook up. We did utilize the dump station at Bonita Falls RV campground which was about a mile before Applewhite. Space 32 and 30 have a small incline of space between them so if you plan on having two spaces sided by side for larger groups, these sites won't work out well. Site 32 has one huge pine tree on it and 30 has no shade. The tent space will be right in the sun. Let me say it gets extremely hot by 7 am. The nights were a bit chilly so bring a sweater and blankets. One water spigot is across from site 30. The bathrooms are across from 32 and there is only ONE working toilet for women and for men for all the lower loop sites. That is not ideal considering the campsite was full. I saw portable toilets just at the entrance of the campground. Our site was along a dirt trail which was directly behind and above our sites. This trail had ATV and dirt bikes, as well as vehicles driving by at all hours of the day and night. Some vehicle driving by with loud music at 3 am. We also could hear traffic in the nearby highway. Not ideal but I guess for a location only a short distance from Fontana, you have to compromise. Definitely not the beauty of Sequoia. We we warned about rattle snakes and did see one on our last day and it came very close to my 2-year old grandson. Very scary. We saw deer along the mountain side, and the adjacent property to the campground had some llamas. There is a perimeter fence along the campground that makes it look like you're not really camping. We drove across the street to the Applewhite picnic area. The creek is ice cold and gets very very crowded on the weekends. We enjoyed Friday because it wasn't too busy. It is free if you are camping. Just show your camp pass. The camp host came by with firewood for sale and quiet time was not enforced. I would not return to this campground.

Picnic tables are set up close enough to the water's edge that it makes for a quaint spot to eat and enjoy. Tables are sprinkled around so that there are quite a few yet not too close together, and plenty of shade. Parking is near the tables too, so you don't have to haul your stuff very far. Lots of parking spots up and down the picnic area and each bathroom is within a reasonable walking distance. Very sweet little spot. However, it's not really very clean. Not bad, but seems that the people using the area are inconsiderate. I guess that goes for anywhere in this country of ours, but maybe a ranger or park employee can make an extra sweep of the place to pick up trash. Toilets are pit toilets furnished with toilet paper and and sinks to wash up. There are cute little wood carvings placed around the site and an old shack near the entrance. They've definitely gone the extra distance to make it a cute place for a visit. Relatively close to the city, but far enough away that you feel like you are hundreds of miles up in the mountains. Luckily it was a wide fire trail but it was pretty intense!!! Keep driving until the fire road ends. There is parking and a bathroom as well. It's been recently maintained with what looks like fresh gravel. No 4x4 needed. On my way up I was appalled at the graffiti! It's disturbing that punks can't respect nature and also pollute our water. Once you are on the trailhead it's a steady incline on a very narrow trail. But it's pretty well kept and it isn't overgrown much. I only took the path up to the Stone House camp, which stupidly there is no actual "stone house" also not really a camp I could find unless the camp marker was slightly off? But I don't recommend this trail one bit. The beginning of the trail is cleared and easy to hike down. But once you get to the creek it's hell from there on in and back out. The trail literally ends at the creek. I had to cross the creek a few times repeatedly. There are huge boulders and a lot of loose rocks. There are also a lot of downed trees, and don't get me started on the gnats! Plus tons of fire ants, regular house ants, and tons of spiders and spider webs! I had repellent on and the gnats were all over me 10 fold! It was hell trying to swat them away while climbing boulders, climbing over & under trees, and crossing the creek multiple times. The creek was roaring like crazy in places and a tad scary to be honest. In one crossing I lost my balance on a slimy rock and ended up in the creek. I finally decided to turn around, and nearly fell off a section of rocks that must have been part of a landslide, because when I started putting my body weight on them they tumbled down and I ended up cutting my leg on a sharp boulder. Trying to make my way out I regretted ever venturing into this mess. My advice stay on the main trail! I never did make it to the stream crossing, so maybe next time. It's all sun and it's extremely warm so bring lots of water. I did 7.25 miles and drank all my 2L water bladder. Watch out for small snakes that look like long lizards without legs. The one I saw was when I was walking back down towards my car on the fire road. There were a few homeless up there, in their cars with a forest adventure pass. I think they stay there during the day until the trail closes. So be careful.
