(Love the tomatillo!) many vegan options, including zucchini, cabbage, beans peppers, rice and guacamole. Jalepeno slaw is delicious. In fact I would have liked to be able to buy a pint of salsa to go! Pricing is fair and reasonable-- food is high quality and you get what you pay for :) anyone who thinks this place is "on the high end" of pricing has been spending too much time eating cheapo at McDonald's. (Blah!) in fact I'd say the prices are the same as a chipotle (which is owned by McDonald's). Top notch local canned beer selection; and of course what sealed the 5th star for me was the outdoor dog friendly seating. The young adults working here were courteous and friendly, I was happy to tip them well! Who woulda guessed Morganton, staid, square Morganton, NC - would have such a gem of an outlet for heavy snackage! Stop in here while waiting for your parts or repair next door at Burke Outdoor, or swing by for take-away items for office or family. There's a decent selection of perfectly chilled beer for on site consumption. And what might one consume here? Well, as the name suggests, BURRITOS! As well as TACOS! Delicious NACHOS! (Order these with piping hot queso.) As well as tasty salads! One begins the scrumptious process by selecting burrito, or taco. Then, as you watch, a friendly guy or gal will 'build' your selection as you direct, using super-fresh condiments! Select a drink, and head to a table and chow-down! Seating IS somewhat limited indoors, however, and the two picnic tables positioned outdoors really don't help the overflow during prime chow times. For that reason, it's best to strongly consider the 'take-away' option during busy times. I feel pricing is a bit on the high side for the menu items; not excessively so, but expensive enough to notice. A smallish bag of admittedly tasty nacho chips and two quesos will set you back a quick $7.50, for instance. We're traveling back from Tennessee and needed gas and then the baby woke up so we decided to find a place to actually eat (stretch legs, bathroom, etc) and we ran across this place! The inside is really small and there's no indoor seating due to covid now, but there were large picnic tables outside and most were covered! The menu has LOTS of options! My husband and I both got burritos - 1 steak and 1 chicken. For my 14 month old son we got the beans, rice & queso. Everything was really good! We had SO MANY chips because each burrito came with them AND we got them as a side with queso. You walk up and order much like a chipotle or subway so you see them make your food and get it quickly! There is kind of a grubby vibe (bathroom, physical space) about this place but the food was super fresh, flavorful, and tasted like good ingredients. A fantastic tucked away burrito place in the mountains. This place is fantastic. I've been here a handful of times now when road tripping to the mountains from Durham, NC. Mountain Burrito is just shy of an hour outside of Asheville and my wife and I always plan our road trips around having lunch here.Mountain Burrito is kind of like an independent version of Chipotle. You can make your own burrito, bowl or salad and customize it in a multitude of ways. There's the usual meat offerings of chicken, pork and steak and sometimes something else. There's an incredible selection of salsas that range in heat. Sample as many as possible since they are all delicious. I usually get a steak or chicken bowl topped with a wide variety of things and have always been incredibly pleased with my order. It's also worth noting the staff here is incredibly friendly and down to earth. Even when just passing through they were more polite and easy to talk to than most people at any local restaurants where i'm from. It's just a chill bunch of people who want to sell you tasty burritos and that's something i'm super into. DAAAYYYUUUMMMM!! That was TASTY! Quick stop on a weekend road trip. Hubby had the pork burrito w pintos and the pickled Serrano peppers-loved it!! I had naked veggie burrito, loved it!! Very fresh ingredients-that rojo salsa tasted like the tomatoes were picked this morning w the dew still on them. The mojo sauce too...and it was warm and sweet...not too terribly spicy. Tho now 30 minutes later, I'm still feeling a bit flushed from the sweet slow heat. The burritos are as wide as my face--and only about $8 WITH chips and salsa. The ingredients are all super fresh! I prefer the chicken, not as much the steak my wife had. And the beans, hummus, guacamole, cabbage and cheese are delicious atop the tortilla. The chips are much heartier than most. You have to ask for salsa or you likely won't get any. And we tried a $2.50 individually wrapped cinnamon-apple bread pudding that was delicious. Seating is limited but opens quickly. Parking is ample. Don't miss the turn into the parking lot. Located in one of five strip mall buildings in a cluster, even with GPS, it can be a little tough to find this spot. Don't let that stop you! You must persevere!! Let's just say I listened - Pulled pork, Pineapple Habanero Salsa, Jalapeno Slaw, Rice, Black Beans, Corn, Red Onions, Queso Fresco, and Chipolte Cream Sauce - and then Tonya P said - "You better put some damn fresh jalapenos on that mutha or I'm gonna beat you with a rosewood spoon!" That burrito fed two of us easily. Geez and damn, that was truly delicious! The Jalapeno slices were so large I thought I was eating a green pepper at first...and then I swallowed...and then I couldn't feel my lips or gums for twenty minutes. The homemade hot sauces are really tasty and even the tortilla chips are fantastic. Nice selection of bottled beers and a "Specials" board that usually has a great lunch deal. Let's leave it at this - I would walk a mile in flip flops (two sizes too small), carrying a knapsack full of rocks, in the blazing Carolina sun to eat one of these burritos. I really wanted to like Mountain Burrito... I recently spent one night in Morganton on a trip hiking in the NC mountains. After a quick check at Yelp, I thought I had found the perfect local place for a quick takeout meal to satisfy my hunger after a day of hiking. Since it had been a long day, I didn't arrive until about 30 minutes before closing. They were out of guacamole (one of the toppings for my "naked burrito" I was looking forward to) and some of the other ingredients I tried like the carne asada didn't taste freshly made. The chips were a bit stale. That's probably on me for not making it out til almost closing time. After getting back to my hotel, I realized they hadn't included all the toppings that I had asked for or had used very little pico and salsa that I had asked for. Maybe they had a hard time understanding me since I was wearing a mask... Unfortunately, I was the only person there wearing a mask. Not a single staff member was. The CDC and state of NC has strongly recommended restaurant staff wear masks to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Seems like a simple thing to look out for each other and the community's health. It also makes me wonder what other health safety steps Mountain Burrito is overlooking. (Granted, their state health inspection score looks great according to Yelp.) I almost always prefer local restaurants over chains. I've had much better meals and experiences over the last few months at Chipotle though. Overall - 2 stars for Mountain Burrito and I give myself 2 stars for not finding somewhere else to eat when I saw no one was wearing masks. read more

Awesome! Driving down I-40 towards Asheville and we stopped here based on yelp reviews. So glad we did. Friendly, helpful employees, delicious and fresh ingredients, healthiest lunch option on the road that I've ever come across! I opted for the smaller size and it was plenty for a meal! The chips and salsa aren't anything to write home about. The food is really good and fairly priced. It's a great twist on Mexican cuisine. It's set up similar to a Chipotle where you can customize you tacos, nachos, burrito, or bowl. I would give it 5 stars if the employees were friendlier. I'm not basing this of one experience either, I've been to Mountain Burrito probably 10-15 times and more often than not their is a rude employee there. Great stuff - probably one of the better restaurants/eateries in Morganton. Its a little difficult to find from Fleming Rd., but its next to a bead shop right before you get to Tannery station and the chicken plant. Good variety of fillings and wraps and some really good salsas. A little pricey for what you get and for the area, but in general its a good value. Seems to be a very popular lunch spot. Mountain Burrito is where it's at. I live about an hour and a half from Morganton and I would honestly consider making the drive just for another Burrito. Shout out to Sam J for recommending this place. I'm going to blame it on the fresh jalapeños, but like so many others I cried into my burrito. This place is that good. The only difference between me and the others is that they had some self respect and wrapped up the remainder of their huge burrito, whereas I shamelessly devoured it in one sitting. This place is not huge and like others have said, it is very hard to find. Make sure that you do find it though. Also, it is a short drive once you exit I-40, so it is a great option if you are just traveling through Morganton. It has a typical tex-mex setup where you go down the line picking the ingredients that will be wrapped up in your tortilla. They also steam your tortilla at the beginning (similar to Qdoba). This is always a nice touch. I ordered the recommended burrito: Pulled Pork, Pineapple Habanero Salsa, Jalapeño Slaw, Rice, Black Beans, Chipotle Cream Sauce, and fresh jalapeños. This is the way to go! That burrito was seriously delicious and humongous. It had a nice spice to it and they aren't afraid to bring the heat here. The homemade tortilla chips are delicious as well. The service was excellent and the employees will happily make recommendations. I would highly recommend Mountain Burrito to anyone traveling through or stopping in Morganton. Our food was phenomenal. The guy fixing my burrito recommended adding zucchini in with my steak, and I went with it and it was absolutely delicious. A gem in the mountains. We head here after every camping trip on our way back to Charlotte. We're typically already talking about our orders two days ahead of time. It's a tiny taco pilgrimage. The staff is friendly, the ingredients are fresh, and the food is delicious. They also have enough toppings, salsa and hot sauces to force you to come back and try them all. So, next time you're even remotely close to Morganton, make an excuse to drive through and grab a burrito. Note- I don't have any pictures because my burrito is inhaled instead of chewed. read more
