Calvary Hill Funeral Home

Funeral home staff is very helpful, very business-oriented and very attentive to needs. The…read moreservices are extremely expensive, but they do accommodate you when they can (ie, bringing trays of food in for memorial service rather than pay for their expensive reception). So if you are willing...do the footwork (ie, shop around for your own coffin/flowers/headstone/etc., rather than going the easy route by buying their expensive coffin/flowers/headstone/etc. The only thing I had in way of complaint was I had to follow-up twice on getting the memorial stone installed...we purchased it from an external vendor (saving $$$) but they have to install it.

This is the second issue we've had with this particular business…read more Our family's experience with Calvary Hill, particularly Colton Storie's lack of customer service and follow-through, was extremely disappointing during an already devastating time. Both Calvary Hill and Laurel Land are Dignity Memorial properties. My father had previously worked with Colton on his own funeral arrangements at Calvary Hill, so when my sister Michele was dying, it seemed reasonable to have Colton coordinate her arrangements, even though she was ultimately to be buried at Laurel Land. My father explained that our family had an unused burial space at Laurel Land purchased by his parents. Colton confirmed that the space was available for Michele, proceeded with the funeral and burial arrangements, and accepted a $1,500 deposit on August 22, the day she died. Three days later, when we went to Laurel Land, we learned that heirship requirements prevented Michele from being buried in that space. Colton recommended a 10-day public-notice process, which we understood would allow the burial to proceed if no one objected. We later learned from SCI that the notice apparently would not have resolved Laurel Land's additional requirements. Because we could not risk delaying Michele's burial only to discover 10 days later that the issue remained unresolved, we arranged to bury her elsewhere. The customer service failure became especially unacceptable afterward. My father repeatedly called Colton for an explanation but received no return calls. The unused arrangements apparently were never properly canceled, and my father was later sent an invoice for approximately $15,000 for services that were never provided. I ultimately had to escalate the matter to SCI/Dignity Memorial to have the charges canceled and seek the return of my father's $1,500 deposit. Mistakes and misunderstandings can happen, but failing to communicate afterward is much harder to excuse. Returning a grieving father's calls, explaining what went wrong, canceling unused arrangements, and ensuring he was not billed for services never provided should have been the bare minimum. We chose Colton because Calvary Hill and Laurel Land are both part of the Dignity Memorial network and believed he could coordinate these arrangements appropriately. Instead, our family was left chasing answers and correcting problems while grieving my sister. Families arranging a funeral deserve accurate information, clear communication, compassion, and follow-through. Our family received far less than that.
