Pioneer Park Cemetery is hidden amongst the concrete and the Dallas Convention Center in downtown Dallas, and is the burial ground for many of Dallas' first settlers: hence the name. The graveyard was established in 1857, but burials occurred in that area long before that date. It is also the final resting place for veterans from The Texas Revolution, The Civil War, and the War of 1812. The area is cluttered with historical markers, and even boasts the cities' oldest outdoor sculpture, which is a Confederate Memorial. This graveyard is paramount in Dallas history, and in my opinion, I think you can learn more about Dallas history here than anywhere else in the city, except for maybe The Oak Grove Cemetery. Aside from history, the cemetery is adjacent to the Dallas Convention Center, so it's a good place to hide if you're stuck having to work / attend a convention. Just watch out for nature's vampires: the mosquitoes. That place is a an outbreak of West Nile waiting to happen. Also, there are loads of homeless people hanging out here. I've seen them sleeping on top of graves, or maybe it was zombies, I wasn't about to go check. There is also a high probability this graveyard is haunted - poltergeist style. As the city of Dallas grew around the cemetery, bones were disturbed. Apparently in 1907, the Santa Fe railroad excavated the western edge of the cemetery and an account in The Dallas Morning News reported workers "hauled away dirt strewn with bones by the wagon load." Later, parts of the Dallas Convention Center were built on top of the original burial grounds. You won't catch me in that ho after midnight.

The cemetery dates back to the 1800s. Nice piece of history to visit. Right next to the convention center and a cattle drive monument. Gets a little warm in the summer but still worth the visit.

We were taken to an underground bunker, using an aged elevator - in which we were told "you don't want to know what this and the offices we are going to were previously used for." Ugh. That meeting included a requirement for $1,052 for a 6"x3" plaque on the existing grave marker, being shown how much money we had "saved" (line by line) compared to today's prices, upselling options, and suggestions to pay in advance for our own funerals asap - to save or families from the cost. We also were told about the importance of doing as instructed because graves were being claimed and bodies disposed of by criminals posing as relatives and reselling the sites. It couldn't have been more grim. The graveside site visit (to an unkempt mess, and area that is clearly not maintained in any way (with misaligned and damaged grave markers, broken walls, damaged signage and uncut grass) included being shown available plots in the even rougher areas in case we wanted to buy today, and having to listen to the escorting staff's personal tragedies... instead of being allowed to focus on our own loss. The second bunker meeting ended being asked to hand over the $1,050 because it takes 3 months to get the marker, being told that the flower people were too busy to speak with us, and a reminder that their jobs were in danger if we gave any bad feedback. When we said that we did not need some of the paid for items, the required reimbursement to the estate was promised and has been defaulted on for 2 months despite multiple calls and promises to resolve. Oh, and on the day, they forgot the pall bearer's boutonnières. It took 2 months to get the death certificate - and only then by calling multiple times when they told us thy had been lost in the mail... yes really. We went and got them ourselves in the end. We were left no choice but report this place to the Texas Funeral Service Commission (TFSC). Btw - the flowers ended up being x3 the price they are elsewhere - so we didn't use this place for those - neither should you. Bottom line - Steer clear, and if you're already committed, be ready to deal with a used car lot level customer service.

Another missing review?…read more I've been stopping in here for 30 years and know I've reviewed it before. Oh well. If you like historical cemeteries.... Go! Many prominent Dallisites including,Mayors, 6, financiers, developers etc are interned here. It is a beautiful place. Not taken care of quite as well as in the past but not abandoned either. My favorite grave is of a man named Slaughter. Check out the Texas historical marker photo and picture of his granite tomb. There is a multi-generational family of grey foxes living here in the shadow of downtown that's a pleasant surprise every time I stop in.

Went today & this lady driving a van started following me & my mom & asked us if we were going to a service & we told her no . She drove away then 5 minutes later she comes back & asks what were looking for & told her looking for the florist & all she said it's the first building, didnt say which way that would be so we turned around & she drove away . Again about another 5 minutes she comes back & says ma'am it's the first building again giving no directions like go away if your not going to be helpful & if I wanted your help I'd ask you . She was very rude . So we went inside the mausoleum & asked someone where it was & that lady was very nice & gave helpful directions . Idk if that fist lady was supposed to be security or just supposed to be helpful but she was very rude & not helpful .

The good news is I had met with Janice Demus the week before so was a step ahead! Mrs. Demus was GREAT! She went over all of the details thoroughly, so I was able to make a decision on the funeral arrangements fairly quickly. Miguel Bandy was PHENOMENAL! I often wondered did he ever sleep! He was very responsive and supportive. He made a very tough and sensitive situation very comforting and uncomplicated. I know there were other bereaved clients with families in need, but I never felt like there were - based on the GREAT customer service my family and I received from the moment my dad passed until he was laid to rest! Unfortunately, I was not able to give 5 stars. We paid for the livestream service option and are not pleased with the outcome. The recording is not great. There seems to be some technical disconnects that need to be addressed if they are going to continue to offer this service. Had we known, we would have secured an alternative. We are grateful that the service was recorded, but we would have liked a better product ultimately.

Genna was our funeral director and walked us through every step and helped answer any questions we had. We met with her and she went over what services we would need and how the process would work from getting my dad ready, to getting him to the funeral home, to setting up the day of the funeral and cremation. We told her what we needed for the day of the funeral and also the types of services we needed and she only selected the things we talked about. Not once did she try to upcharge us or nickel and dime us for every little thing. They have a non-denominational chapel that was very nice, brightly lit, and accommodates a little over 100 people, so it's perfect for people of any religion. The funeral day went very smoothly and Genna was there to help in case we needed anything and to ensure things went accordingly. She was there for us from the morning all the way until the end of the cremation (which is done at their sister location ~15 minutes away). The viewing room at the crematorium was also much larger than I expected so that was a nice surprise too. Genna was very accommodating and respectful of people's feelings and religions. She also asked all the right questions to make sure our bases were covered and we had everything we needed taken care of. She's very professional and was very understanding. I would highly recommend Sparkman Funeral Home in the unfortunate event you need their services. I hope I won't need their services anytime soon again, but would gladly recommend them to friends and other family that may. Thank you for everything and for making this difficult time easier for me and my family.
