Interestingly, I keep forgetting to do a Review on mother's market! Perhaps because when I go shopping groceries, this doesn't come to mine. But it should! The first thing one may notice upon entering is that there is wonderful clean, fresh natural smelling environment! My daughter wanted to meet to buy a rotisserie chicken saying that it's just delicious. They would be closing in 30 minutes, so there are so many employees here just cleaning, & sanitizing everything Mother's market seems to be one of those places in my opinion that I for one take for granted. But appreciate immensely. Robert in the produce helped us, very nice employee. The isles are always large for wheelchairs, motorized scooters, etc. since especially we're near Laguna Woods Senior citizen area. I heard that this place is really popular on senior day. Not sure if that's Tuesday or Wednesday but everything is 15% off. Hopefully, I'll be able to visit this place more as I intend to eat healthier and fresher. read more

I've been going to Mother's since I was a teenager and normally I love it. But honestly, they have the most inconsistently made drinks at the juice bar these days. The smoothies never taste the same twice, and that's NOT a compliment. I just paid $16 for a smoothie that is supposed to have banana in it, and I do not taste any banana, not even a pinch, I think it was absolutely left out of my drink. Now I've got this giant flavorless smoothie to force down. The last time I got the same smoothie and it was so incredibly imbalanced with the flavors it was insane. Are you people using recipes for your smoothies and actually measuring out the ingredients? I do not think that you are. I think you guys just through stuff into the blenders and hope for the best. There is just no way recipes are being used because the smoothies just never taste right. They are so expensive and they never taste correctly made. Ever. A great little store, kind of like a smaller, more curated version of Gelsons or Whole Foods. The selection is somewhat limited, mainly because it's a smaller store, but they focus on quality. I came in specifically for grass-fed beef sausages, and they only had 1-2 brands of beef and maybe 1-2 of chicken, so don't expect a huge variety. They do have a pretty impressive salad bar and hot food station, and the prices are reasonable for the quality. It's slightly pricier than Aldi, but you're paying for better quality and some unique options you might not find elsewhere. read more

Mother's Market and Kitchen is a grocery store and cafe. Came here for lunch with a friend on a Thursday afternoon, so this review is only for the cafe. Parking is easy as there is a big lot. The cafe is located to the right after entering. There is a decent amount of seating and it was not too crowded. My friend was already seated, so I joined her at the table. I was not greeted upon being seated and the server took about 15 minutes to stop by our table to take our orders. I ordered the Maple Brioche Sandwich with a side of Roasted Sweet Potatoes. Our food came out quickly and the portions are good. My sandwich was dry and was light on flavor, but the ingredients seemed fresh. The sweet potatoes were served in large chunks, but they were very soft. They could be mashed with little effort. Overall, giving Mother's Market and Kitchen a 3/5 specifically for the cafe. Mother's Market is a niche grocery store in southern Orange County. This location is on Paseo de Valencia. It has an Erewhon-type vibe in that employees have a bit of an attitude and shoppers tend to be a little judgmental. The store does carry dietary specific products, including gluten-free options and lactose free options and items like that. It has a moderate produce section with a focus on organic produce and an exceptionally over large vitamin and mineral section. A very small freezer section and a very small refrigerator section as well as some cluttered dry goods aisles balance out the rest of the store. Mother's also has an in-house deli bar and kitchen which provides fresh fare at a bit of a costly price. In Southern California there are a lot of healthy conscious grocery stores. This one is not my favorite based on ambience, pricing, and vibe. read more

I tried to like this place since it's less than 5 minutes from me and carries a lot of products that Sprouts, which is a half-mile further, stocks. There are some excellent products, and a variety of options for the higher-end branded stuff. But their selection is often weak, carrying say two varieties of flour where most other stores might have more choices (meaning wheat, triticale, rice, amaranth, etc.) They're somewhat saved by a decent cafe that serves breakfast and lunch, but very trad. Good place to meet if you have friends nearby, and the only bargain in the store. Meat selection is very weak and, unless you like to spend a lot on vacuum-packed cuts at premium prices, you should probably steer clear of this area. Deli items and prepared food are hit and miss, though some might find the steam tables and salad bar a positive. The staff is competent, especially the produce folks, who stock and arrange their limited and largely organic selections very attractively. I was also surprised that a cashier had to look up organic romaine (which is the only one they sell). Though she said they change all the time, they don't (I worked in retail grocery and have lots of experience). Clerks stock shelves quietly, but I'm not sure they know what stock they have, other than a few perennials, and ask for Quinoa or the pop product of the day and they often don't even recognize what it is. The store itself seems lazily managed, with poor staff training, and sits right next to one of the saddest CVS stores I've ever seen. This small strip mall is kind of a backwater or orphan child of real stores. It's nice to sit here and have a quiet coffee or breakfast with someone, but it's not a place I'll put on my grocery store rotation. Oh, yes -- one positive is that Seniors get a discount on Wednesday, bringing the prices down from very expensive to just expensive. read more

I really want to like this Mother's Market & Kitchen location because it's so convenient to my eye doctor, but every visit leaves me with the same frustrating experience. My husband and I came in around 10am on a Saturday to grab fruit, vitamins, and hopefully order breakfast. Right away, we had trouble finding the vitamins, so my husband asked a young employee for help. The interaction was honestly bizarre--he mumbled every time he spoke, pointed vaguely without explaining anything, and then just walked away mid-conversation. We were left more confused than when we started.he looked like a confused Benson Boone . There was one woman in the vitamin section helping another customer, but she was tied up with him for quite a while, so getting assistance felt nearly impossible. When we finally checked out, the cashier (Reese) barely said a word. The only thing he asked was whether I was going to bag my groceries or if he should. That moment really summed up the experience--like, isn't that part of the service? What's most disappointing is that this isn't a one-time thing. This location consistently gives off a vibe that employees are bothered by customers or just don't want to be there. Because of that, we ended up skipping breakfast altogether. My advice: if you're working in customer service, there should at least be a baseline level of helpfulness and communication. Right now, this store just doesn't deliver that. Found a piece of glass in my vegan chocolate chip muffin about 2 weeks. Fortunately, no damage was done. I didn't cut my mouth, and I didn't break a tooth, and I didn't swallow the glass. Wrote to corporate office to let them know and no response. Why? Guess that would admit some sort of liability. Something glass broke in the kitchen and a chip of glass ended up in the muffin batter. Be aware that they do not have adequate cleaning practices in their kitchen at this location. I will NEVER shop there again. I recently ordered and ate Mother's Grass Fed Baja Steak Burrito. It should have been called the Mother's Baja Rice Burrito. Given the area where the store is my guess is that most reviewers might feel it best to harken back to "the good old days" and those good old days prices - however those days, as we know, have come and gone. I like their little sit down corner when you first enter, on the right. This was the 2nd time I was there. Went to DMV and exploring the neighborhood. Laguna Woods, Ca. I come here often to pick up a hot lunch while heading over to work on my sons house. The convenience is just too good to pass up. The hot lunches are pre made and are placed in a carousel with heat lamps. The best one is the chicken fajitas but there is a disproportionate amount of black beans under that chicken. At least it's not pinto beans or rice, 4 stars. The chicken curry dish is good but a lot of rice, 3 stars. The chicken penne pasta is the one I usually get because they do not often make the other ones. It is good, and it retains heat well enough to be warm come lunchtime. Todays version however had a minuscule portion of chicken, perhaps a few slivers, 2 stars. The beef medley dish is an odd concoction of extremely finely ground odd tasting beef mixed with stuff, 1 star. Chicken fettuccine is pretty good, it has a nice cheese sauce that is flavorful. Skimpy on the chicken though, 3 stars. The tamales are pretty much a failure in that they feature a ground up mystery beef or chicken that is basically tasteless. The ground chicken is exceptionally dry and has an odor reminiscent of canned tuna. The vegan tamale actually has some flavor and moisture. 2 stars. The pizza slices are not too bad for $3.00. The vegetarian one is by far the best, with a generous amount of tasty verges and cheese, and a nice crust. The pepperoni was harsh and gave me heartburn, 3 stars. The sushi counter display looks good at first but be careful. Most of the offerings use a ground up fish paste that is immediately unappetizing. You can select a roll however with a real piece of very thinly sliced tuna on the rice. For $13 you are not going to get a lot of fish, mostly rice, 2 stars. I love their juices, especially the electric lemonade. Unfortunately the juices are prohibitively expensive. You get a small ten ounce container for $7. The Rebel coffee drinks are also expensive at $7.00. Sometimes there is a 2 for 1 offer on the Rebel drinks, but then they go fast. Today I was able to grab a couple for $3.50 each instead of $7.00. Pretty much everything is expensive compared to similar products purchased elsewhere, but like I said it is convenient and really isn't horrible, just average and expensive for average. read more
