I love mother Stewart's. This place was opening as I ended my time at Wittenberg and I'm so glad I could experience it. The beers are very drinkable, which I appreciate. There aren't a ton of options, so I hope they do expand, but they have some wine and other drinks to fill it out. This is a much more relaxed environment than some other places in Springfield. They have a projector to show games on tv, and they have a collection of board games, too. Everyone is nice here - seating is pretty open and you often run into friends here. There are long tables as well as bar seating and a few smaller tables. Hoping Springfield can expand their beer scene. I'd love to see Mother Stewart's anchor a little brewery district someday! read more

Mother Stewarts is on the Ale Trail, so we popped in one Sunday afternoon for lunch. Turns out, it's more of an event center in a really old warehouse, so there's just a bar inside - the food is in a food truck outside. No worries, the crew was super friendly, walked us through the beer selections, and let us know what to order from the truck outside - couldn't ask for anything more! Beer was clean, like cold filtered and had a nice aftertaste as well. Low on the IBUs, so not bitter at all. read more

My partner and I tried Mother Stewarts tonight for the first time as part of the Dayton Ale Trail and they were fantastic! We really enjoyed our time there. Pictured is the Barrel Aged Porter that I ordered first. It was really a good heavy malt base porter that had then been aged in a whiskey barrel. Definitely worth a try. I then had the Disco Dancer IPA. This was my personal favorite of the 2. Great hazy IPA that was well balanced and tasty! The brewery itself is large and open with a big bar. I can see why this is a popular spot, especially during the warmer months. And finally, the service was awesome! The bartenders were more than happy to allow you to try samples and were truly great! As far as brewery venues is concerned this is one of the best that I have been to. The largest stage I have seen at a brewery. Lots of seating. In a very historical building that once saw the likes of Al Capone. Now the bad part is they only have five beers on tap. They have a couple ales and they do have a couple cider guest taps but overall their beer is average at best. They do rotate one tap every season, but five beers is the max that they typically have on hand. If you're looking for a great night out to listen to some live music, and the beer isn't that important this might be your place. I will definitely be back to listen to some music. They also have no food. I did notice a food truck in their parking lot. read more

Fantastic local brewery, 6 to 8 beers of their own on tap as well cocktail small cocktail menu. Their Disco Dancer IPA is hazy, slightly fruity and exceptional. The Witbier and Trucker Pils are also popular. Selection of bourbons as well. Service is walk up at the bar, servers do a nice job of keeping the beer flowing. Inside as well as outside seating. They typically have a rotation of food trucks in the evenings during the week. Food trucks, live music and events almost every weekend. What am I doing wrong? I was sure that I posted a review of Mother Stewart's after I visited. I'll rely on memory to recreate the review. First of all I'm not a big beer drinker. I do support Venues that support live local music. So if you're a local band I suggest you inquire about the possibility of playing there. I was visiting friends and family in Springfield over the Summer. Up till this point I'd never heard of Chris Bingman and the Buttermilk Biscuit Boys. I google them and decided to extend my roadtrip so I could hear them play at Mother Stewart's. I arrived an hour early as I usually do in San Diego to get a good parking spot and seat. The parking lot was already fairly packed. I arrived in time to get one of the last available seats on the patio. After the band did the soundtrack I met Chris. We became imediate friends.I knew he had others he needed to talk to before the show so I asked if he'd be around afterwards. After the show he introduced me to his girlfriend Robyn and invited me to The Madden Road Music Fest. So I have Mother Stewart's to thank for introducing me to Chris Bingman and the Buttermilk Biscuit Boys. Now that Mother Stewart's is on my radar. I'm sure it will become a place I visit on my trips to Springfield. I loved that it was family oriented. There were kids of all ages playing and dancing in front of the stage. From the people I encountered the crowd was friendly.From what I saw there was a variety of craft beers. There was a food truck and some groups brought in pizza. I appreciated that a piece of Springfield's past was preserved by Mother Stewart's instead of being destroyed. I was also happy to see the future generation of Bluegrass musicians dancing on the lawn the night I was there. See you all in the Summer of 23..... A really neat brewery located in Springfield. It feels like an amazing bonus to the locals of the area - but doesn't necessarily feel like a "destination brewery" for driving into - the beer selection just feels a bit too limited for that. PROS: -Beer prices are amazing! Absolutely so. Their regular, everyday prices are the same as some of the best happy hours we can find in Dayton. -TONS of seating. I imagine Mother Stewart's is probably one of the "community centers" of the entire seating. They have the most seating I've seen out of almost every brewery I've been to. Lots of those community table seats, but they also have bar seating and high-top tables as well as four-person low-top tables. And that's just the inside! They have an entire adorable-looking outdoor patio area with even more seating out there. It's impressive! -Brewery itself doesn't sell any food. They do have, quite literally, food trucks outside. They even have a spot for them. The food trucks place their menus on the tables inside, and you can text your name and order, and they'll bring it in for you. (At least, the food trucks that were there when we were!) What a good system - especially in winter! -Parking lot right outside the front door. I imagine the parking lot overflows into other areas during peak times, but it's not too small for the brewery size and the people who will have a DD to drink. CONS: -The beer selection is really limited - surprisingly so for a brewery. About 7 offerings. I imagine this tends to be a great choice for locals who want to enjoy the atmosphere and have found their favorites here, but as a "destination" brewery, we were a bit disappointed. (We drove 40 minutes to get here and then 40 back). -We weren't particularly fond of the beers we had. I think it's likely a water source difference since the beers had a similar taste to them that just wasn't for us. I saw lots of people enjoying theirs, so I think it's just a taste preference - like all beer, really! read more

They say confession's good for the soul, so my soul's FINE, thank you very much, and EXTRA fine, because even though I'm not the biggest "suds" fan on the block, I just LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this place, and everything that it means for downtown Springfield!! We've heard SO MUCH this wonderful addition to our downtown, including all the oddball worries before it arrived, that it would somehow mean "mayhem and depravity" and hoards of drunks roaming the streets (look in the mirror, Springfield...) but there's been nothing but GREAT news coming from this place, and only more ahead!! Lots of special events happening here, including a wide variety of concerts and charity events. You can tell they take what they do here VERY seriously, and have made this a true showplace, both inside and out!! What a great neighborhood gathering place, and hopefully, a great trendsetter for the rebirth of "never-say-never" Springfield!! We finally checked it out on a warm Saturday evening, and things were just as great as we had heard!! Lots of choices for (just about) every beer lover (!!) Let me first say that I really, really enjoyed this place the first year and some of their supplemental collaborations of beers...but as a traveler across the US.... i come in here frequently cuz I love, love, love the space. Their beers are mediocre at best - just saying. You could truly be a "destination brewery" but your beers are sub par after this many years of brewing. MS brew staff, please "brew outside the box" - the 5 mediocre beers you have on tap and explore other ingredients & recipes - you have shown in the early years that you can brew Great Beers! I like the facility and I've heard it's in an old casket factory with all the charm of .... something other than an old casket factory due to the upgrades to indoor and outdoor social spaces. I visited a few weeks ago in October 2020 and found the company appeared to be doing a good job under the circumstances. They offer crowlers and to go six packs. I rather enjoyed the Disco Dancer and took some of their bourbon barrel aged amber ale to a party which everyone raved about. read more

I'm not a 5 star guy unless it is well deserved and this place has it all! My only complaint is that they close too early! Venue: decor is incredible especially given the history of the building it's in. The bar and tables are all repurposed wood from other places of the building and that combined with the perfect balance of concrete and steel just set it off. Very clean and well kept. Wide open so even on busy nights it's not too crowded. Public table concept with a very long and accessible bar. Staff: Friendly and on point. Even though they may seem a bit quiet at times if you watch carefully you will see that they are focused on swift and friendly service. No nonsense and amazing all around! Beer and Drinks: fair prices and a killer value. Given most of if not all the beers on tap are brewed on site they are absolute incredible. Regardless of your taste they have something for everyone. Liquor selection is limited but top shelf at fair prices, can't go wrong! Food: while they do not have a kitchen or menus that always have a quality food truck just outside the door keeping the menu versatile and delicious. They are also open door when it comes to food. Bring in a picnic lunch or anything that sounds good, they encourage outside food! Local Supporter: from local artists to music this place has it all. Art shows, live music, and more! All in all this place is worth spending an evening or two. Great value, amazing venue, amazing environment and vibe. Wow! What a great place! I'm really glad I had a chance to visit last Sunday, as I'd been hearing through the grapevine that a brewery was coming soon to Springfield. It's a huge rehabbed warehouse, and used to contain a casket manufacturer - don't let that creep you out, because it now contains a huge welcoming space with plenty of options and room for events. They have a stage area, an outdoor patio/lawn area, and you can even view the brewing area up close. They bring in food trucks, so no food in-house. The beers here are solid. My husband and I each had a flight, so we tried 8 of the 11 beers currently on tap. Lots of well-balanced brews, and a diversity of styles - not just 9,000 hoppy beers like most places offer these days. It really reminded me of the german style of brewing in the sense that many of the beers were flavorful and smooth without beating you over the head with a bitter hoppy finish. Hey, they do have an IPA though if that's what you're into! I live in Columbus, so this is a bit of a trek to drink here frequently, but I definitely recommend it if you live in the area or if you're passing through town. A welcome addition to downtown Springfield, and I hope this helps to bring in more businesses and interest to these beautiful old downtown buildings. read more

I've been in the craft beverage scene for a long time. Longer than you would probably guess. In that time, I've gone all the way to the bottom of the craft beer rabbit hole and back. I was a homebrewer, a brewing contest judge, and I helped found a meadery in Columbus, Ohio where I lead tours still. I've been a fervent supporter of the American craft beverage renaissance my entire adult life. There are so many breweries now, and they're all trying super hard to be unique. All too often, you wind up with beers that have too much going on, a thousand words of copy on the bottle, and a crazy stylistic twist that doesn't really add anything or demonstrate any finesse. Breweries try to be quirky, cute, or edgy, and in the process they seem to forget that they're supposed to be making drinkable beer. In the old days, before prohibition wrecked America's alcohol culture, every neighborhood had a brewery. Every farmer made beer, or whiskey, or wine, or mead, or all of the above. They were adapting recipes from their homelands to the resources available to them in the new world. We had unbelievable diversity back then. After prohibition, only the big players were allowed to enter the market. It wasn't until the Carter administration that people were allowed to brew beer at home, which sparked the modern craft beer renaissance we're all enjoying today. Craft beer took off. Small breweries exploded in popularity and a lot of people rushed to capitalize on the public's interest. There's a lot of great beer being made, but there's also a lot of noise and nonsense out there. Small breweries are pushing their distribution as far as possible, and we have a confusing glut of very average, similar tasting beers flooding our shelves. I have long wished for a resurgence of the "neighborhood brewery". Local places not necessarily trying to capture the attention of the entire world, but rather trying to create a solid, consistent, high quality line of true-to-style beers that are extremely drinkable and approachable for people that live around the brewery. A brewery that is connected to it's immediate community first and foremost. I believe Mother Stewart's Brewing Company represents that next step in the evolution of the craft beer industry. They don't have crazy names, they don't have super elaborate branding, they're not trying to package it up and sell it all over the world. They're just making really delicious beer and letting it speak for itself. The tap room is absolutely delightful. I won't talk much about it because I feel like other reviewers have covered it. Suffice to say it's a very pleasant place to enjoy a pint. One afternoon, I was across the street at The Commons standing in line at Ramen Rickshaw and I struck up a conversation about the brewery with the guy in line behind me. He said he didn't care for MS because "it tasted like Budweiser". He meant it as a dis, but Budweiser is pretty incredible when you think about it. They produce an exceptionally drinkable, refreshing pilsner that is flawlessly consistent across multiple brewing locations, day in, day out, and the flavor hasn't changed for generations. You have to have a PHD in chemical engineering to be a brewmaster at Budweiser. So to suggest that a tiny brewery like Mother Stewart's is able to pull off something like that is pretty impressive to the mind of an informed beer drinker. I'm really proud that when Springfield finally entered the craft brewing scene, it was done in such a classy way. Mother Stewart's is a real local brewery in the way breweries were meant to be before prohibition stole them from us. What should you try? Everything. Should you come and visit? Yes. Do we care if you don't? No, this is Springfield's place. We know we've got it good and we're loving it. World class beer for regular folks. As a Wittenberg University alum, I am sad that this place was not in business before I graduated. The space both inside and out is spacious, yet still instills a cozy backyard vibe. The beer garden outside is so nice with cafe lights strung and is a great space for gatherings and events, like a food truck rally or reunion. The beer here though is not the creme of the crop - the Witbier is a little flat and the Truck Stop Pils nor the Whiskey River Red Ale aren't as flavorful as others I've had. The few times I have returned to Mother Stewart's, I've hoped that the beer would be slightly better, but that has not been the case. Overall, great venue, okay beer. read more

Had given this brewery a good review but today it plummeted! Yes they had food trucks outside, but the place was not over busy and they had no lager or Pilsner type beers. We asked about lagers or stout and the bar girls told us they were out but had plenty of IPA's, again we enquired if they have anything else similar to a lager and were told we could have an IPA. Really, do they not know what they are serving, lager to IPA is a difference similar to the difference between gasoline and diesel. My husband and I were visiting family in the area, and saw that this brewery had just opened this summer. We have a local craft brewery near us that's doing phenomenally well (but didn't start out with the best planning) and were determined to check this place out while in the area. We were not disappointed. First, the decor and ambiance of the tap room is amazing. They took an old building (casket factory) and revitalized it, keeping the charm of the old bones and giving it an updated look. Some serious thought went into the planning of this place. You have the inside tap room, which is spacious and has plenty of seating. Then there is the outside portion which is also wonderful. Outside you can play corn hole or use chalk (provided) to draw, doodle, or write on the concrete walls around the area. Or, just sit at one of the tables and enjoy good weather. The big garage-door style doors open the outside to the inside, creating a very welcoming and inviting feel to the entire establishment. They've kept much of the older styling of the building, but added a modern twist with lighting and entryways. The bar itself is long and spacious, so whether you're just ordering beer or actually sitting there, you don't feel cramped. There are four-chair tables or long beer-garden style picnic tables available, so this place accommodates varied group sizes well. The actual brewery section is open to view, just chained off so no one can tamper with the goods. But it's really nice to see all the equipment. While we were viewing, a staff member came along and asked if we had questions (which we did) and he seemed happy to give us info. All of the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful. It can be difficult to decide what to try when coming to a new place like this, so these patient people were appreciated! Beer prices are just right. Growlers are available so you can get this good stuff to go. Right now, they aren't bottling yet. T-shirts are available to purchase, which we did. Restrooms are spacious and clean. Plenty of stalls in the ladies' room for when it's busy. As of now, they do not serve food. But, they do have an agreement with a pizza shop a couple of blocks away (Bada Boom) who will deliver to there, or you can go pick it up and bring it back. Menus are available at the tap room. We saw people having food delivered, and we went and got some ourselves (and yes, I do recommend it!) While we're not from the area, it's wonderful to see this downtown being revitalized by it. I hope it does well and is "the spot to be" in Springfield. When we return, we will go there again.
