(Heads up, they do have in and out privileges. There was no wait for check-in, and the front desk was extremely friendly, even sending up a complimentary dessert for our big wedding anniversary. We had a parliament view on the second floor, and it was extremely spacious. The gentleman who showed up with our luggage offered great suggestions for nearby places and things to do. The hotel is equipped with a restaurant, bar and a cafe. The cafe offers some cute bits and bobs to purchase as souvenirs. The front desk suggested taking a hotel tour that is offered through a third party (if I remember correctly), and it was well worth it! I learned about the history of the hotel and the events that happened there. This hotel is just beautiful and needs to be experienced no matter what. I fully recommend a stay here, regardless of how long your stay is, I mean, come on, it's a castle!

We checked into our room on the 3rd floor with a Parliament view that was well worth it. The lobby areas, hallways, and rooms are so nice with a historic castle feel. Only complaint is the lack of outlets compared to other hotels including the Fairmonts in Montreal and Quebec City we stayed at next, but our extension cord helped. The location is perfect and a short walk to Parliament Hill, Byward Market, and the National Gallery of Art. The temporary Senate is also across the street at the Old Train Station. Restaurants were closed but we enjoyed the coffee shop upon checkout. Looking forward to hopefully staying here again.

Pros: Since it's away from downtown, parking at the hotel is only $13 a night. Soap, shampoo, lotion and cups were always replenished. Great room service. Towels were clean and soft. Beautiful view from room since we selected room with lanai, parliament view. They have several rooms with a lanai so we could sit outside to enjoy the view of the parliament over the river and dry some clothes. Air con and outside was quiet and clean rooms. Hotel is walking distance of the museum of Canadian history. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Cons: Room smelled like smoke or musty first walking in. They always gave 1 towel short. Lots of bugs outside, and when I opened the bathroom window, the screen didn't keep them out, so we had gnats on the ceiling while bathing that one night. No breakfast, no safe in room or lockbox, and the room key could not open the exercise room. Overall, I'd book here again because of the awesome view, clean rooms, room service and reasonable rates.

The Good: High tech Rooms, there were so many switches it kind of got confusing going around figuring out which is for what light. Plenty of mood lighting and perfect lighting for when getting ready. The location was great, close enough to most downtown activities yet a little tucked away for a more peaceful environment. I do want to make a note this hotel is located right next to the shelter. To be honest that wasn't an issue for us. They kept themselves, there's always someone in the lobby so no unauthorized individuals can enter as elevator requires key. Staff was friendly from the moment we checked in, they held doors & greeted us each time. The room itself is modern, not much privacy though when it comes to shower, which is slightly tinted so when showering, anyone sitting in the room has full visuals. The bathroom floor is heated which was a nice touch. Found the bedding and pillows comfortable. The room is equipped with coffee pods & machine, creamer & milk in the fridge. Ample amount of towels and toiletries. The Ok: Though the room was cleaned, unfortunately our bathroom was not. We checked in very late so we were beyond exhausted only to come and find urine on the Toilet seat. The door was for the toilet didn't always close properly so not much privacy when it comes to that as well. Tips Overnight parking available on Daly street. (Free)

They very very stern while telling us about how the smoking room is only for cigarettes, nothing else. We agreed but they kept stressing it to us.... We went to the van to grab stuff and started carrying it to the room. The second we walked in, we got a phone call. It was the front desk saying they saw 5 people come in on camera and gave us shit about it. We told them the 5th person is from Ottawa and is showing us around and they felt the need to keep stressing the 4 person rule. Feeling pretty unwelcome right off the bat. There was only a half used roll of toilet paper in the room, a couple towels and no garbage can except for in the bathroom. Not big deals, but just little things that are easy to do. The room itself was alright. 2 beds, hardwood floor, AC unit.. microscopic television that we didn't turn on. Also, there is a mirror covering a whole in the wall behind the TV where there looks like there used to be a hidden room... could be over analyzing but it looks like there used to be a 2-way there o something... The WIfi was terrible as well. Signal dropped every few minutes and was slow. Overall, the rating would have been better if the staff would've been more friendly. Nothing makes you feel welcome like constant surveillance and phone calls.

I verified my dates three times before hitting the confirm button so I know I didn't make a mistake. I received an email basically stating (in french) that they were getting ready for my stay and thank me for booking - no dates or confirmation number. I should have called but I didn't. A day before we are ready to leave, I decided to just call and make sure all was okay. The girl who answered the phone spoke english with a heavy accent but told me yes we were booked at the hotel and everything was fine. I hung up. Then she called me back. Told me that I was booked for the 4th to the 6th. I said no, I wanted the 3rd to the 5th. She said they had no room because it was the balloon festival, but she would talk to her supervisor and call me back. Knowing I would not get a room, I scrambled and made plans for the Friday night, figuring I would keep the reservation for the Sat. night. After a hour of not hearing back I called. The girl after a while remembered talking to me and said - Let me talk to my Supervisor (I thought you were supposed to do that) Coming back to the line after about 3 seconds she said she couldn't help me. I kept the Sat. night and cancelled the Sunday. She also couldn't find my online booking in the system. Was it a glitch. I don't know, but here was no apology or anything given to me. Arrived at Hotel on Saturday to check in. Has been a while since I've been in quebec and my imperfect french was rusty. I said to the girl at the desk - in english, that I was checking in. She spoke only french to me, rather rudely and spoke very fast. She knew I was having difficulty understanding her, she knew we were english, but she continued to speak french. She understood us when we spoke English. I finally had to tell her to speak slowly. After getting frustrated, she rambled something else off to us in french which I just nodded and took my key. At the elevator, it is out of order. No one mentioned that at the desk. Our room was on the third floor. No one at the desk seemed to be interested that there were people trying to get to their rooms. We ended up taking the stairs. I was not impressed. Being so close to the Casino which caters to english and french, with the balloon festival on and having people who only speak English, you would think that they would ensure that the front desk can accommodate both languages.

That explains the mold. Are they ever cleaned? The parking lot is poorly maintained and was a solid sheet of ice. I fell in the parking lot and contacted both the hotel and corporate. I also spoke the the property manager, Papa Diop, and he just smiled and laughed at me. My husband asked him what was so funny. He continuously spoke over my husband and I and showed no concern over my fall or the fact that my children and I had bathed in moldy water. The health department needs to do a thorough inspection of this property because it has seriously gone downhill. This use to be our go to hotel when visiting the Ottawa/Gatineau area but we will never set foot on this property again. I asked the desk clerk for the name of the property owner and he flat out refused to give me the owners name. He Was polite on our arrival day but very rude when we had an issue that needed attention. Do not stay at this hotel. Mistakes happen. Accidents happen. We are all human but when management can't admit wrong doing problems snowball. Papa Diop had the opportunity to fix their shortcomings but instead decided to act rude and unprofessional and laugh about things that no decent human being would laugh at. I am still in total disbelief that this person is managing that hotel. We were repeat customers who have sent several guests there over the years. I haven never complained in the past but this last stay was a complete nightmare. These are not even the only issues we had but I think this says enough. Do not stay here. This hotel has gone downhill.

Budget traveling often requires some sacrifice as to what is basic comfort and security to name…read morebrand properties and the bells and whistles that come with the $$/night rate. For this recent travel to Ottawa, Canada during May 2016, I decided to stay about 10 minutes north of downtown Ottawa, across the provincial lines up in Gatineau, Quebec. I checked out Hotels.com and Priceline to find this gem called Motel Montcalm. Sure, it's not the Marriott or the Hyatt by any means, but to me, it's affordable and very much budget friendly for multiple days and it makes for a nice extended stay worth enjoying. I would say that this property, like most motels, mirrors the Motel 6 or Red Roof brands in the states. The rooms are typically small, but they are worth their rates, since it's very much an attraction for us budget minded travelers to look for in a good nights rest after a day of traveling. The hotels in downtown Ottawa was fairly outside my price range for an extended 5 night stay, so I decided to spend 3 nights here in Gatineau and the rest in downtown Ottawa. I was in town for a nice long holiday (vacation) and to run the 2016 Ottawa marathon for fun. I arrived here on a random Wednesday night around 9:15pm via Uber and it was nice. The service at the front counter was nice, fast, and pleasant. The lady at the counter seemed like she was the owner, but I could be wrong. I received room #108 and I'm glad that it didn't smell like cigarette smoke. The property itself was separated 3 buildings with 2 stories each on them. Thank goodness that I had gotten a ground floor unit, since I didn't feel the need to climb stairs - especially when there's no elevator when it came to these hotel categories. The property had a small swimming pool, which was pretty good. I took a dip in the pool on Thursday afternoon and it was nice having it all to myself. Motel Montcalm is located conveniently at 175 Boulevard Greber, one of the main thoroughfares in Gatineau. They accept major credit cards, which is nice. Hotels.com has properties where you can book the hotel online, but do not pay till you actually stay there, which is really good, when you want to budget things out. Motel Montcalm, as you would imagine, has its own parking lot for registered guests. It's small enough to where you can park your rental car to the door of your unit for ease. While the television did not seem to cooperate with me, the remotes didn't really do much for me either, I didn't bother with it, since the wifi hotspot here is very killer. Strong wifi and it's not spotty at all. Very very good! For the most part, the room is small and very well maintained by the housekeeping staff here at the motel Montcalm. It's like being in my own home, spacious yet, not too big to be a bother cleaning it when you have to. :) The bed itself was kind of comfortable, although you'd need a couple of nights sleep to really make it conform to your body. It's not as comfortable to other beds used at higher tier properties, but it's as adequate as you can get. The surrounding area is very much like small town USA, with surrounding residential neighborhoods, which makes Gatineau a good choice for my stay here. Just be fare warned that the Quebec side has its share of French speaking citizens. I've had my fare share of that experience already. I felt like being in Paris again, but it ain't. The overall experience was decently good. Good room rate for a comfortable basic stay. I don't need all the bells and whistles, but it's always nice to have them! 5 stars for sure. Support local! A+

I wad pleasantly surprised to find a clean room that had quality wireless internet & cable TV. The room was also equipped with a fridge and microwave and was newly renovated. We stayed in room 311 in the rear of the building. I suggest asking to stay in this section of the hotel. A leather jacket was left in the broom, and we realized this after returning home. We called the hotel and they had found the jacket. We were able to arrange pickup of the leather jacket at the front office. It is a simple hotel but was a quality place to stay for two nights. I recommend staying here for trips to nearby Ottawa attractions.

I have stayed in Four Star hotels in other countries, and I wouldn't consider this hotel to be on an upscale, top-notch level. The exterior and interior felt dated and unimaginative. The reception desk was hard to locate. Upon entering through the main doors, you must turn right, then left to check in. The waiting area, near the entrance, had hard, uncomfortable chairs, and sofas. I appreciated the secure, underground, parking garage, but there was a moment of panic when the key card didn't work once, and we were promptly given a replacement at the reception desk. That being said, the beds in the hotel room were quite comfortable. However, the rest of the room reinforced the dated feel. The bathroom was functional, but basic, featuring only a standard bathtub/shower combination, not the separate upscale shower or high-end fixtures one often finds in a Four Diamond hotel. We ordered room service twice, and both times the service was friendly and quick. The menu had a lot of variety, and the amount of food was plentiful, really even being enough for two people. I tried the fish and chips and the risotto and they were both good. We didn't dine in the main restaurant, but we did try to explore the leisure amenities. We wandered upstairs and saw the huge rooms used for conferences and wedding receptions. Unfortunately, the poor internal signage meant we couldn't easily find the pool and spa services.
