Located in the heavily industrial area of Emery Village, I found this location serendipitously. I wasn't looking for anything specific but I remembered a Caribbean food place I was at a long while back saying they only carry Tin Nel's patties. As I was heading to a client, I saw the sign! :D Literally!!! LOL!!! Made a note to go there for lunch. I actually didn't make it there for lunch - ugh.. oh well. Clients first. I did finally get there mid/late afternoon. I didn't expect much to be left. The least I can get is hopefully some patties to try. Walking in, there really isn't much to talk about. The hot table seem to not have been used at all - maybe lunch wasn't hopping during these Covid times. I asked what they had, to the gal who poked her head out the door leading to the kitchen (I assume). She asked what I wanted, a bit dry and not really all that happy to see me. I asked for a couple of patties and a small jerk chicken meal. She disappeared and reappeared shortly after. She arrived with plastic bag all tied up and ready to usher me on my way. Paid for the food, and away I went. I kind of felt hurried out because maybe I'm Asian... yeah... pandemic fears! I'm sure being a Canadian Korean who hasn't travelled to Asia since I was a teenager - who by the way has a great command of the English language and excellent enunciation (even through a mask) could count for a bit of courtesy... AND... maybe not! I kept my manners. Used, please, thank you, and goodbye ... to the young gal. I don't quite remember any pleasantries in return. Anyway.. this is a food review right!?! RIGHT! OK... first of all. The flakiness of the patty was pretty good. The filling was quite tasty - I just wish there was more than a thin paste of it. Skimping on the filling isn't going to win any awards but then again, I don't know if that is the norm. The jerk chicken was OK overall - nothing to to rave about but still something to write about. I expect some heat when having Caribbean foods. Maybe they took one look at me and made it mild or it's their standard seasoning. They could have at least asked me - I do speak the language... Keep in mind, there are so many Asians in Jamaica... We do make our way around the world. Teehee... Nonetheless... I really wanted to like the place. I'm a huge fan of Island Foods. Will I try this place again? Perhaps I will give them another go on the patties - but for the food, not a total hard pass but pass indeed. I guess my search for the best patties continues. I'm really glad that Fairview Mall has a Cinnabon :) it is near one of the entrance, so you can smell it right when you walk in! I If you plan to share on the spot, a regular size cinnamon bun is good for sharing with a friend. If you plan to grab a quick snack, I'd recommend getting a mini size cinnamon bun or the crispy cinnamon sticks! I absolutely love that warm and gooey cinnamon sauce that is rolled into the bun. So guilty, but damn, it is so good!

The Mill Street Cheese Market also has a variety of jellies and sauces to make that special meal even more special. Try the "Gruyère de Grotte" (cave aged Gruyere), it's top notch. The "Fromage grand crème" is also one of our favorites. It's superior than a three crème brie if that is possible. It's like the gods of cheese making descended to earth and decided to show us mere mortals how to make a real brie. The "Red Fox" is also awesome and so is the apple-wood smoked cheddar. Want to taste before you buy? It's ok, just ask. Don't forget your Montreal Bagels, and a fresh goat cream cheese to go with that. Not to mention the crackers, baguette and the various jellies. Service is friendly and pretty quick despite how busy it is at times. The prices are similar to Auntie Anne's and Wetzel's Pretzels (currently where Auntie Anne's use to be). Unlike Auntie Anne's andd Wetzel's Pretzels, Mr. Pretzels almost always has pretzels and both bites readily available while making them at the same time. Hotdog bites comes with free dip (though sometimes whoever is at the cashier may not mention it). Additional seasoning/toppings and dip for the regular bits is extra.

Piping hot, generous amount of seasoning, and a great portion size for a snack. Service very efficient and preparation time is super fast. I was in and out in a couple mins. A fantastic alternative (at least for me) to less healthy options like deep fried foods and sweets.

Choices are…read moreamazingly plentiful, I was able to find not just the normal cuts of beef, but even frozen beef bone marrow, foie gras, etc. Also I was able to find a pretty wide variety of Italian ingredients including many types of flour for pasta and pizza. Probably this store has some Italian background? They also have a wide selection of prepared meat items, for instance I saw they had ready to bake Beef Wellington :D However, I'm not too sure about the taste as I tried their breakfast sausage and it turned out far too salty for me. The other side of being a specialty store means...not having that much choices for other types of items. Produce choices are satisfying enough but of less variety than bigger supermarkets. I somehow liked their packaging of using ziplock bags for salad leaves and other produces, it saved me a bit of fridge space. Seafood choices are very limited. Being a person with a diet that stresses heavily on seafood and white meats, that weekend I did end up going for a second grocery trip to get all the items I needed. The store had very few customers during my visit. It has the feeling of a neighborhood grocer that serves only who knows this place - I happened to hear a customer talking to the butcher and it sounded like the customer had been coming to the store for food for a long time. Not a bad place at all if knowing what to expect from a specialty store.

In between the 2 green-roofed buildings. It's at the very end, #42. "Factory" is a bit deceiving. It's more like Roasted Nut Closet! Only 1 person is allowed in at a time and that's probably for the best as *maybe* only 3 people can fit inside. It's basically a window and the owner is behind plexi scooping the nuts you want. The lady behind the plexi was very helpful and honest. She said they didn't have macadamia nuts, BUT if I were to buy them elsewhere, make sure they are fresh. I appreciate this because I have purchased rancid nuts before! ha ha, not fun as macs are $$$! I thought that I'd feel pressured to buy in such a small space, but atmosphere was relaxed. I believe they also offer samples as I saw a couple inside chewing on something. I decided to buy 1lb of mixed nuts are they were DEVINE! Soo fresh. Expensive nuts also included in the mix, so they don't shaft you with peanuts. They also sell freshly roasted coffee. And according to their sign, nuts are roasted...daily. A pretty long line formed while I was waiting outside as well, so I think that that's a really good sign!

It is hard to see what is in stock so you will need to ask for what you want and how much per lb. A very helpful woman allowed me to sample the cashews (under my mask) to help me decide how much I would get. I like the lightly salted option - not too salty, but more salt than plain. They also had plain. I went home with: Lightly salted roasted jumbo cashews Lightly salted roasted pistachios in the shell Honey roasted cashews Wasabi peas Oriental mix Tasty, freshly roasted nuts. Also, high praise from my husband on the pistachios. I swung by the Cheese Boutique on my way back home. I am well stocked with snacks and treats for Christmas company.
