Pricey? Yes. Worth it? Yes! I don't shop here often but when I do, their products are top notch - fresh and worth every penny! It's definitely expensive shopping here but you really do get what you pay for. I come here mainly for their bakery items like their famous jelly roll cake - a must get for the holidays! Their cookies here are baked in house and delicious as well. I often come here during the holidays for herbs as well, since herbs seem to sell out quickly at larger grocery stores. They really have everything that you need here. Butcher section also has great quality meat. As for their ice cream pints at the back of the store - you MUST get some! They are so delicious with unique flavours, some even with an Asian twist. Yes, this place is pretty pricey but you can find specialty products here. Gluten free? No problem! I found the tastiest beef empanadas from Woah Dough! You gotta check them out! I stopped by to pick up one of their infamous jelly rolls. Never had one but heard that it's amazing. The standard one is the mixed berry however they had a lemon & blueberry one so I opted to go with that since hubby loves that flavor combination. We took it to a friend's house that night and it was exquisite! My friends who said that they normally don't like cake now have a new addiction. The cake had the perfect texture to it to hold up all that amazing fresh cream, lemon curd and blueberries and it was also a perfect balance of sweetness. I've been there on multiple occasions while living in Markham usually interacting with the staff in bakery and the cashiers and everyone I have encountered has been lovely. The parking lot isn't massive but it is enough to host all of their shoppers as I've never had an issue with finding parking there. read more

The quality of products and their devotion to local merchandise as well is top notch. 4-5 stars for merchandising. 1 star for the Sunday afternoon cashier who probably is the youngest during that late shift. I lined up, go to her cashier (maybe the 2nd one). I unloaded my basket when asked and before she started scanning I told her I'd like to buy gift cards. She told me can't help me so I would need wait for the first cashier so she can assist. I told her if she can cash me for the basket of goods first. She actually said no and told me to line up for the first. We had to put everything in a basket again. In all honesty, she could have cash me out first but she CHOSE not to, and i lost even more time since I have to wait and cash out on 2 separate transactions as the store is not equipped to do it on one. Gift cards are still paper recorded and given so it's a slower transaction to cash out for that too. I came primarily to get the gift cards for friends who are moving in the area ... The not so good imo is the Black Sesame Bread from La Petite Colline which is available at the Village Grocer. I was so excited to see Black Sesame bread and bought the pack. For $5.75 it comes with five thick slices. Personally, we were really disappointed with the sesame bread which I found to be too subtle or a lack of flavour and a little dry especially around the edges before the crust. The edges on some of the slices were condensed. I thought the bread would be airier. It would be a no-buy again. 2.5/5. I will be back at the Village Grocer again for other treats. read more

Village Grocers carry one of my favourite cake of all times... the jelly roll! I will make a trip up north just for it! In the past, I always order their mix berries jelly roll. When I went recently, I discovered in addition to their mixed berries jelly roll, they had a mango strawberry jelly roll, a matcha jelly roll and a chestnut jelly roll! The staff managing their bakery station told me they have the other flavours only on the weekends. So I guess it was my lucky day! I ordered their chestnut roll since you can easily buy matcha flavoured desserts almost everywhere you go these days. We had it that night for dessert, the cream had a light chestnut flavour and I loved how there's macadamia nuts in there giving it a nice crunch which goes well with the smooth cream inside the fresh cake. Had a nice lunch in Unionville, heard so much about The Village Grocer jelly rolls and since I was in the neighborhood decided to finally pull the trigger. The Village Grocer is like a miniature Lawrence Market with their own and other high quality food products. Cookies, tarts, cakes, pies oh my, hawk tuah I was lazer focused on their jelly rolls. (warning, I'm not talking about the country rap singer) Their regular size jelly rolls are large enough to choke a horse so I decided to get their half size roll which is still large enough to choke a pony. Time for a sweet treats review of the village grocer. Lots of fresh and delicious baked goods and treats available! Food: We tried the jelly roll. The design is simplistic but mouth watering. The cake is soft and moist yet firm enough to hold against all the cream and fruit. The fruit are fresh and ripe. The cream is just the right sweetness to hold the cake and fruit altogether - 5/5. The m&m cookies are amazing as well. The cookies have a great crunch and crispy exterior, the chocolate from the m&ms is tasty. I have lived in Markham for over 20 years and have visited this place numerous times, but the one thing I have never tried before was their jelly roll. I finally decided to try it, and to my surprise, it was extremely tasty and light! There is a good balance of cream and fruit inside that doesn't make it too sweet. The pricing is affordable, and the service is great. However, one thing I noticed is that they no longer serve muffins that have the huge muffin top on them anymore! I come here all the time to get a Caesar dressing I can't find anywhere else. I'm amazed at all the wonderful and fresh products they have. The only down side is it is a little pricey. That's why I gave them 4 stars. But for their service and product range and product quality it definitely merits above 5 stars even. Would I recommend? A resounding yes, if you can afford it. Overall, Village Grocer is a nice 'chic' place for your higher quality goods in Markham. Offering a good range of daily needs for pantry, produce and on the go meals. Produce (meats, deli) are quite fresh and quality is evident. That being said, it can be a hit or miss, but I generally trust the steak selection and freshness offered here, particularly with its price range which is a bit higher than your average grocery shop, but still comparable. A wide selection of pantry items that you wouldnt be able to source elsewhere. Like to browse around here for this reason (of course, pre-pandemic when it was a bit more suitable). Their hot items are a bit average in taste, but they do offer a nice selection. I ordered the chicken parm and felt that it was good but given we had to reheat it, the chicken got quite salty and the batter was not as crispy as intended. Pizza is a hit or miss for us as well. Some were quite soft with their pizza base, and definitely a good amount of cheese. A slice is around $5, and is relatively smaller than your typical pizza shop. They do offer some nicer ranges including feta cheese with spinach and balsamic vinegar for example. Didnt try it but looks good! Overall, i would give the pizza a 3.5/5, probably would be best eaten as soon as its hot/out of oven even after reheating as it got hard and just less pleasant, particularly with hard cheese too. Their croissants are lovely. Buttery and flakey, but be cautious if you reheat it as they can get super crispy which makes it hard after cooling. I would say just keep it lightly toasted if anything. Popular for the fruit jelly roll! Definitely recommend as its massive and priced quite reasonably. I have to say, there's a lot of cream so beware of getting sugar overload. The roll cake itself is airy and soft, but overtime will have that staleness and the fruits do go off within a day or two, so best consumed day of or one day after. Red velvet cake was nice as well. They have a layer of chocolate ganache within the cake itself, which makes it more chocolatey but also sweeter than your typical red velvet. The cream cheese icing is sweet but compliments the red velvet cake, which is very mild in cocoa flavour. Overall enjoyable, but the make itself is less moist and more crumbly, so if you prefer a softer cake, this may be less appealing. read more

The Village Grocer is the store I wish was closer to home, but considering how tasty their ice cream and bakery items are, maybe it's a good thing I can't go every day! First of all, with all the major grocery stores just putting up signs about social distancing, The Village Grocer actually goes to great efforts to minimize the number of customers in the store at one time. They have a great system of having numbered carts, and if they are out of carts, customers have to wait for the shoppers in the store to be finished and return their cart for sanitizing. Only one person per cart. This might upset a limited few customers but I personally appreciate the system. From the pizza counter - hubby devoured the slices of Buffalo Chicken Pizza and can't wait to get more; to the bakery counter - their Signature Jelly Roll is the perfect dessert for those of us who don't like super sweet desserts, but they also have tons of other cakes, pies, bars, muffins, etc, that are made in store, my cart is already half full before I even hit produce and the meat counter! If you are a fan of date squares, this is the place you must try! The produce is by far why I make the trip - they sell Driscoll's Limited Edition Blueberries when in season, and these babies are a dessert on their own! So big and sweet with that tiny bit of crunch that I love in a fresh blueberry. They also sell the best Avocados I have ever had. Buttery and never brown. They seem to procure the best of the produce available both locally and imported. I recently bought 2 bags of Lychees that were the best we've ever tasted. Their meat counter is also filled with top quality, and yes, in the case of Wagyu, high priced meat. But there is also chicken, sausages, pork chops, etc that are reasonably priced for the quality. They make their own ice cream, and all the flavours we have had so far have been incredible. When BlogTO did a review they were a bit low on stock, but since they make it in store, they were able to stock back up quickly. Prices on some items are high, but in my opinion still a bargain for the quality. I would rather spend more and know I will enjoy what I buy, than spend less and have everything end up in the compost because it is inedible, which has been my experience with a lot of produce from the major grocery stores. Love this market place. There's something so country yet chic about it that even if you're not doing any grocery, it's still a nice place to just walk around. The parking lot is not huge so if you come on the weekend during peak hours you might have to wait a bit. The place is very clean and spacious. Very organized and with a good variety of not only your every day grocery items but also other things like flowers and Bakery section. Imagine a charming little farmer's market that sells specialty, gourmet foods. Breads are baked fresh, cuts of meat and seafood are beautiful arranged, and they've got fancy teas and snacks everywhere. This is what the Village Grocer is, but in a nice little building in Markham. There really is no other place like this around unless you go further south into Toronto. When you step inside, it's just a delightful experience. You can smell the fresh foods all around you; a lot of which you can buy and eat right there in their dining area. Visually, it has a rustic and clean appeal, and evokes the feeling of being transported to a rural town market. There is so much variety and I am certain you can get specific things here that are very hard to get in other grocery stores (e.g. foie gras, exotic spices, etc.) I love to come here even when I have nothing to buy. Something I really enjoy are their pre-made sandwiches. I've been able to try 3 or 4 different types and every one of them have been delicious. They are overflowing with fresh ingredients with tons of flavour. One of my absolute favourites is the turkey and avocado. Prices wise is definitely on the higher end but there are not too many competition up where Village Grocer locates. I'm really surprised that i have waited this long to write a review about The Village Grocer. This has to be one of my favourite places to shop in Markham! I was beyond thrilled when Whole Foods opened, but i find myself shopping less there and more frequently at The Village Grocer for some of the same grocery items. Their butcher, produce & bakery is top notch! Bakery - pretty much everything you could ask for! Some of our favs that i recommend: flourless chocolate cake, banana & chocolate loafs/blueberry & lemon loafs etc. Their scones - oh my! Super delish, best i've tried anywhere! Everything is bakes on site in store, made from scratch and tastes like homemade. Butcher - occasionally we buy our Christmas turkey's from there. Available to order the first week of December. Everyone had a lot of praise for the turkey and how tender & juicy it was last year. It cooked so well all the way through. A few other favourites of ours from the butcher are the pork tenderloin and stuffed pork tenderloin. Best place to also pick up some great quality steaks! They also offer marinated kebobs etc. Everyone is very knowledgeable about the cuts of meats that they sell and always happy to help. Produce section - so many choices of fresh local fruits & vegetables. They have a great selection of mini potatoes, green beans, apples, berries etc. It's one of 2 places i like to buy watermelons from in the summer. In their freezers they have a huge selection of foods prepared in store.They have chilli, macaroni & cheese, turkey a la king, scalloped potatoes - way too many to list. We've tried several different items - our kids fav is their macaroni & cheese Soups = Soups are out of this world! Our fav is Roasted Butternut Squash Soup!! Such little ingredients required to make delicious hearty soups with no additives or preservatives. Floral & house ware section - beautiful flowers & great quality. You can also pick up vases and other housewares for yourself or as a gift. The deli counter offers a vast variety of cold cuts (they make their own turkey deli meat!), cheeses, quiches, salads, in store prepared meals. Try out their cafe for a coffee & a muffin or lunch. They offer daily specials (check their Facebook page) and this year they added a sushi counter where sushi is made fresh in store daily. It really is a 1 stop shopping place. That offers quality products and great customer service. I've been a regular since moving to Markham 10 years ago. i really like the products at this store, and the house made ice cream is great. however the cashiers are unbelievably rude. never say hello, always rude to customers, impatient and disrespectful. my partner went in, only had cash was short 50 cents so had to run to the car to grab change.. the cashiers all stood around and said they want to "donate" to him. incredibly rude and disrespectful- as if anyone in the world hasn't forgotten their wallet or been short for change before. I'm shocked. for a small business, I think it's wild that the staff isn't more polite. i get treated better at big box stores. will not go back and will tell anyone who mentions this store how unbelievably rude the cashiers are. seriously, who do you think you are to treat people like that? This isn't the first time they're rude. I've been countless times and every cashier is disrespectful to customers in front of me, behind me, and to me. Won't be going back. read more

Having moved between a few locations, this seems to be its final resting place. With a large enough parking lot off of 16th Avenue, it welcomes people in, and when it does - boy is there a lot to take note of. The produce is great quality, the meats are superb. The bakery is second to none (fruit log cake? Yes please!) You can eat in at the cafe, or take out from their read-to-eat section. That is if you can tear yourself away from the row of nearly one hundred different mustards. This place has everything. The only downside? You'll be paying for it. And it's not cheap. read more

I found out about this place when a friend bought over a mixed fruit jelly roll cake from here. My first impression it was fluffy sponge outside and fluffy whipped cream wrapped around inside with berries. It tasted amazing. It's light, fresh, fruity and presentation is simple and nice. The sponge cake was a bit sweet but soft and fluffy. There was a dusting of powder sugar on the cake. This cake was purchased on the Thursday afternoon right before the long weekend and it was the last cake roll on display, so definitely place an order in advance! This review is complimenting the cake only. Serving size enough for 8-10 people. I haven't been to this location before and it would be a quite a distance drive to get to this grocer. So.. if driving by the neighbourhood, I would recommend this place for pick up desserts to anyone having an event, special occasions or just a craving for sweets. read more

The Village Grocer is a regular stop on our grocery circuit. The store is small, family owned, and family friendly. There is lots of parking and it's not crowded when you shop. One of the best reasons to come here and that many of the items are made in-store. The bakery and dessert section is amazing! All the cakes, muffins, scones, and hot buns are fresh baked, gorgeous, and drool-worthy. They sell day old scones as well which sell out by end of day. They have adorable themed cookies and cupcakes as well. They even have a meat room and their deli meats and sausages are excellent. We often pick up some cold cuts and fresh baked bread (olive loaf, OMG). Love visiting this place! :) read more

My first time visiting The Village Grocer this weekend and I can confidently say it is now my favourite and go-to. All the staff are so welcoming and nice. They have a lot of stuff that I haven't seen in other grocery stores in the area such as COWS butter. The highlight of my visit was their prepared pizzas. My boyfriend picked up a slice with mushroom and cream sauce and another with veggies and sausage. Both were great but I think the fav of the day was the mushroom one. The Village grocer has been opened for awhile now and it's just around the corner from where I live. Awesome selection of cooked foods by their own kitchen. They make soups and mains and freeze them. Love their homemade soup. Although its expensive but it's yummmy delicious. I like the selections of many condiments especially the olive oil selection. It's not a very huge supermarket, the prices are on the higher end but you won't regret if you need to entertain guests as they will be happy. Usually grocery shops don't hold a special place for me, I generally consider groceries a chore. But Village grocer, i actually look forward to going there because it has such a nice environment! They have stuff there that you can only find in very few places in the city, case in point: gourmet un-pastuerized honey from Quebec, Sheldon Dairy, Muskoka coffee beans, I can go on ... Their bakery section is the BEST!! I have eaten my fare share of Creme brules, and I often find myself comparing expensive restaurant's creme brules to Village Grocer's! Why? They taste amazing, the potion size is very decent, and its ONLY 5 bucks! Everything else that I have gotten from their bakery section had been nothing short of amazing as well. TIP: Avoid buying day to day stuff that you can find in wallmart or normal grocery stores, they have the same thing for a tad higher price. I always have lunch at their café - they have a different menu for their hot table every day and lots of assorted wraps and sandwiches - I am obsessed with their turkey avocado wrap and have to get one at least once a week!
