I look back at pictures of my hair when I was in my Mishi era and the cut was on point and framed my face perfectly. The color always complimented my skin tone and was blended perfectly. I've been trying for years to achieve an ombre balayage from my natural black to blonde. I finally had success with Emi at Morphic! Prior to Morphic, I had been to a couple of high end salons and their results were somewhere between ok and acceptable, but Emi hit the nail on the head. When I left the salon, I actually felt empowered with my new hair! I never thought I'd say that, but I actually did! It feels effing great to find something you want to express yourself and you finally get it after trying and trying many other times before. Thank you Emi! About my experience: Emi expressed to me this actual delicate process because I'd be going from one end of the color spectrum to the other, so she guided and educated me in how to achieve the look I wanted while keeping my hair's integrity. She explained clearly and thoroughly that I would probably have to come back for a second session to do it *right*. She made it clear to me that if I wanted to accomplish it in one session, I could potentially *fry* my hair, which obviously I/we did not want. Emi takes pride in her work and she shared with me that she likes to do the actual method of Balayage, or sweeping/painting, rather than take short cuts. This method is done only by very few colorists as it takes much more time, but the end result is much more natural. And it showed in the end! Emi and Mishi were amazing! I came from Burning Man having had my hair braided, unwashed, and exposed to the playa for almost three weeks, and they took amazing care of me. I had an incredible scalp oil massage, wash, and cut. I left feeling truly lighter and refreshed. I also loved the vibe/atmosphere with high ceilings, tons of natural light, and lots of plants - it was not only pleasant but helped me relax. If you have thick hair then I am not sure if you'll receive the same quality of service. I'm writing this with a heavy heart, but my experience with Morphic is no longer what it once was. Mishi and I go way back. In fact, she was the one who inspired me to hop on the balyage train after much hesitance. Over the last 6 years, I'd visit regularly and she had always done a fantastic job. In the event of an off-day she would work to make my hair right. She has been awesome and 100% worth every pack of ramen I've had to trade for a real lunch! I've never complained during the times I was excluded from annual promos, asked to blow dry my own hair (occasionally having to leave when it was still drippy wet -- sometimes on cold winter days!), or even having to move appointments back and forth to meet her or her other clients' schedules (sometimes last-minute). I knew my hair had more volume and required more effort, so I've always tried to be as flexible for Mishi as I know she has been for me. A year and a half ago, she decided I needed to be charged a higher rate -- not something I was happy about, but I really loved Mishi and her work, so I bit the bullet. A few months ago, Mishi told me she couldn't work on my hair any longer without an assistant so I could only come in on weekdays. I scrambled to find a way to get the time off, but couldn't make it work until a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately, she was already booked that day but her staff said she could take me in that Saturday. Yay! So a week and a half ago, we did a balyage. But for some reason, there were sections on my right side that were still dark and looked untouched. I came in to have her look at it, and while she said she would pay better attention next time (11 weeks), there was nothing she could do. A large part of why I get the highlighting is because my hair tends to get oily. The bleach balances it out and keeps it low maintenance for the first few weeks. The only thing worse than having to constantly wash my hair is having to wash certain sections while avoiding the bleached parts (which would otherwise lead to breakage). It has been a great 6+ years. I definitely appreciate how accommodating Mishi and her staff have been during my hair journey. However, despite paying more than the average customer, I have been left feeling like less than a customer myself. This review has been incredibly difficult to write because Mishi is as sweet as pie and funny as heck, but I definitely feel the service has diminished. read more

I went to Morphix on and off for years they do amazing work and obviously are extremely popular. I suppose when you are that popular you can become very choosy about who you service. After the pandemic I made multiple calls and emails to book with them but they went unanswered. When I enquired recently I finally was sent a msg that they will be scaling back and only keeping some clientele. It's not that I mind, things change, but it was disappointing to have no one respond for over a year to requests and remaining loyal (I colored my own hair waiting to support them when they reopened). I also have never been dropped by a hair dresser! Especially as a regular and without any accommodation or alternative. They saw me on really short notice, and I appreciate that. But they did not tell me that I'd be seen by someone in training. The mentor was hovering behind him the whole time, and--judging by the amount and type of feedback she was giving--this young man had *VERY LITTLE* experience. ("That section is way too big. You should have half that much hair in your hand right now." "If you hold it this way, you'll cut straight." YIKES.) I showed him four photos of asymmetric layered looks. He gave me a bob. I think because he just learned how to do that cut? My boyfriend called it a he-man cut and I wish I could disagree. I feel like you should get consent if you're going to assign someone in training. I'm super picky about stylists after having moved here from LA-- and I really lucked out to find her (after having been a client of Mishi's ages ago- and being pleasantly surprised to find she has her own salon with an awesome staff). This is a veryy late review for Emi. I came to Morphic in March wanting to lighten up my look (I have dark brown hair and in the middle of winter my skin is really pale, making me look more like a vampire than I'd like). I had never professionally lightened my hair, so it was basically virgin brown hair EXCEPT for the underside, which I had bleached and dyed purple-red over a year ago (I didn't want to study for finals so bad that my friend and I wasted time by ruining each others' hair. Fun.) I had tried to cover up the purple-red color with brown hair dye many times, but since I had bleached it, I pretty much just have to wait until it grows out for it to be completely gone. Emi noticed the purple (covered up with brown dye) immediately, but it didn't phase her at all, and while I originally thought I wanted a balayage, we ended up going a more ombre direction after looking at the inspiration photos I brought. After hours of work, my hair turned out fantastic, DESPITE the shock of the underside coming out bright red/pink when it was bleached (which was inevitable - my fault for the damage I had done to it a year ago). When this happened, Emi handled it so professionally and troubleshooted the issue quickly and without panicking. Most importantly, she was totally transparent about the whole thing, explaining to me what was going on and what she was going to do - she made me feel so comfortable and I wasn't even worried (even with pink hair!). Conclusion - Emi did a skillfully artistic job on my hair, and the level of professionalism that she had when dealing with my messed up dye job was truly impressive and something I won't forget. I've gone to Morphic about a half dozen times now over the past few years. My stylist is Tee Nguyen and she is amazing!! I have naturally curly hair, curls about a 1/2 inch tight. I have always had hair cuts that look great when my hair is styled when I leave the salon, but when it's natural, it just looks blah. Or worse - the terrifying Triangle Head. All of these fears melted away with Tee. The First time I went in she talked with me about my hair type, the different ways I wear my hair, and what products I usually use. As she washed and combed out my hair she educated me on how to tame my curls during the whole process. I was amazed. I've never had a stylist go out of their way to explain all of this. She cut my hair and made me feel gorgeous. When I left the salon it was styled, and I can't find any head shots of me with my curly hair. But I included these two because she also did custom balayage highlights. I had her take my natural brown hair to blonde. Then we went from blonde to red. I can't decide which I love both. Let's just say I'm super picky about every thing I do. I usually do a ton of yelping and researching before picking out a restaurant or hair stylist or manicurist etc. For the first time in my life, I didn't do that. I met Mishi & immediately knew I could trust her with my hair. That's saying a lot, I don't trust easily. Mishi was so modest when I met her, I had no idea she was the owner of this 5 star salon. So when I looked up the place I was wonderfully surprised. My intuition about her was right, you can see how vibrant the photos are, and how they almost come alive. She definitely puts her heart into her work. I didn't do my research before the appointment, so parking was a bit difficult. Since it's in such a popular area of San Francisco. I was slightly late to my appointment, but Mishi was super patient with me and welcomed me with a warm hug nonetheless. She offered me some refreshing coconut water upon arrival, which was perfect because I felt out of breath from my run down Market. I loved loved loved my experience there, there was never a dull moment. Plus, she taught me how to correctly pronounce Balayage, I had no idea!! My hair was a mess coming in, full of tangles, and not looking very pretty to say the least. She was so patient with my hair, combing out the infinite tangles. As she snipped of the hay of my hair, I was really calm and relaxed. Normally I watch like a hawk to make sure they don't over-cut like many hair stylists do sometimes. As I got a more concrete idea of what I wanted, it all started slowly coming together. She gave me the beautiful V-line I'm fond of, with the perfect amount of layers. It's like she read my mind! Even with the dozen of pictures I showed her. Throughout the session, she was really good at checking on me, to make sure everything was to my liking. As she washed my hair & deep conditioned it she was telling me about the products she was putting in my hair. It all smelled so amazing.. & to be honest I got distracted a little by her awesome scalp massage. By far my favorite part of any visit to the salon. So I'll do my best to describe the products, she put a power dose into my hair which is basically a more potent form of a conditioning treatment. It's meant for more damaged hair and has synthetic man made elements that imitate the naturally occurring elements within the hair itself to reinforce and repair the fibers within the hair. My hair is pink, so it's definitely gone through a lot of bleach and dryness. So I would highly recommend scheduling "the works." You'd would be doing your hair a favor! I loved how comfortable I felt with her, not once did I ever feel pressured to do anything or buy anything. She genuinely cared about me, and my hair which in turn made me actually want to buy the products, which I usually never do. One of the products she used, I HAD to take home with me as well. The Okara radiance enhancing spray. It's a leave in conditioner for color treated hair that detangles as well. Sounds like my perfect product in a bottle. The other product I purchased was the Floravanti clarify & shine rinse. I would've never even known about this if it wasn't for Mishi. Its a cherry vinegar detangling rinse, or a mild shampoo. It's perfect for the gym rat like myself who is active often, but trying not to shampoo my hair with harsh chemicals too much. She even threw in a spray bottle to go with it, she's such a sweetheart! She even braided my hair in a beautiful fishtail in the end, now I know where to get my hair braided before half marathons! My hair hasn't felt this healthy in a very very long time. & it's all thanks to Mishi. I'm so glad I met her. When I finally took a look in the mirror I was pleasantly surprised. The v-cut was exactly as I wanted it with the perfect amount of layers to compliment the hair style I wanted, since she knew I was going to my colorist in a few days as well. I haven't been that happy with a cut in years which is why I always dread hair cuts. But she was definitely worth the drive up from San Jose and the scurry down Market and everything in between. So take my advice and make sure to snag her up while you still can, she's only taking new clients up till March! read more

Tee is one if the best masters I've ever met! Besides being friendly and kind person, she is very experienced and highly skilled professional. I came to her with very black hair colored by box color and henna in the past. She was able to make my hair from black to medium brown (my natural color). I recently sat in Emi's chair as a hair model while she painted glorious, shimmery blonde highlights onto my hair using the sought-after balayage technique. So my hair was long overdue for a haircut! I've already made up my mind that I wanted to go short. I was still a little nervous but Tee made my experience so pleasant! She really knows and enjoys her work. It was also a learning experience for me as well. It has took me 8 months to write this review due to my crazy life. But now that I have a moment, I really like to talk about my experience at Morphic with Mishi. I'm gonna be honest about everything, so here goes my experience . I live in San Jose, so for me to drive from SJ to SF to get my hair done is quite inconvenient. But I thought it would be totally worth it if she can get it done right! I had sent a picture of the hair I wanted through their facebook page. Her assistant replied with a quickness, which I thought was really nice. She said she had spoke to Mishi and Mishi thinks that she can definitely do what I was asking for. I was thrilled and scheduled an appt at 4pm. on a Saturday. I show up and we talked about what I wanted done. Basically I wanted a balayage ombre with very blonde ends with even transition between the colors, not a dip dye kind of look. She said I had a lot of color and color correction so it will take quite a while, I would be here till 10pm. Everything she said is true, my hair had all sorts of things going on, so I was fine with that, but when she told me how much it was going to cost me?!?!?!? I was not ready!!!. I won't say the price here on yelp, but let me say, I was shocked. I was prepare to pay a lot cuz her other yelp reviews had said that she was pricey, but I was still a little taken back at how much she quoted me. I contemplated just not doing the hair because the price was out of my range, but then she said that I would still be charged a certain percentage of the service because I had booked up a 5 hour slot and she would be missing out on other potential business. I understand that, I took her time so she needs to be compensated, but I was not going to leave now without getting my hair done. The whole time this conversation was not awkward or rude. We are 2 professional respectable young ladies and we reached an agreement that made both of us happy. Instead of what I dreamed of having, we can up with what I was going to be happy with. She asked me what was the most unhappy thing I had about my hair and I told her all the different shades of color I had going on, she agreed, she said she can try her best to cover up all the different shadings and bleach the ends for a even transition of what a balayage ombre would be, and we reached to a price that we were both ok with. So she started.... and we just started to talk about all sorts of things, and she is a really nice and talented person! I saw some of her other work that she did on her computer and they were all gorgeous. By the time everything was done and fully developed and the bleach has gotten to the shade of blonde that was good, it was like 10pm. Mishi was so detailed oriented the whole time, did not rush me nor took any short cuts, trust me, I would know, I pretty much grew up in a salon. The end result I was really happy with. She gave me a haircut and was really meticulous about cutting, even though it was now 10:30pm and she was prolly tired and wants to go to bed. By the time all was done, it was 10:50 and I had rush out to the garage where I parked my care cuz the garage closes at 11pm there and your car would be stuck until next morning. This was back in August 2013 that she did my hair, and I have to say, my balayage ombre and cut still looks fantastic. I haven't had to touch it up because the more that it grows out, the better it looks actually. It really lasted! Mishi is talented and really takes her time, and her work speaks volumes. Mishi is awesome and I highly recommend her to anyone! I can personally vouch for her -- message me for me to convince you. Comfort Mishi cares about her customers and makes sure they are comfortable. She has this really yummy coconut water for her clients. She also lets you use her iPad which has magazines and netflix. I'm not saying that this makes or breaks her as a hair stylist, but it's nice to know that she cares and these little details adds up to a comfortable experience. Ability as a stylist I think Yelp users amply reflect her ability as a stylist. She's great and she's diverse. She did an ombre for me, which I love and can't stop staring at. The only problem I had with her initially was a communication error, which she took full responsibility of (see below for more details). Follow Up I think this is the biggest part of Mishi's success. She makes sure that all her clients are happy after the appointment. Dozens of stylists can do the ombre look. It's what happens when things don't go according to plan is what sets a stylist apart. I didn't like my hair color and she fixed it for me free of charge. She also refunded me the amount for the haircut because it was something she couldn't fix (requires growing out). She also gives free bang trims for her clients because she wants them to maintain their look and love it all the time. I think this really sets her apart. Price Yes -- she is more pricey than some other stylists who can probably achieve the same look. However, with Mishi, it's just a better experience. You're also guaranteed to love your hair since is so good with the follow up and will fix it if you don't like it. read more

Very happy with my cut by Emi today. While unfortunately Emi was delayed 20-30 minutes with another client, she made up for it by giving me a complimentary conditioning treatment for the wait. I went in saying "I want long layers" and she gave me precisely that. After I looked at it and explained why what I saw wasn't what I envisioned, she happily put my gown back on and gave me the more defined layers I actually wanted. (Turns out, I thought long layers just meant I want layers in my long hair. Heh.) My hair looks so healthy, and is incredibly easy to manage now. The cut lets my natural waves curl a little at the bottom of each layer, making the back of my hair a cascade of waves, as I envisioned. Very happy with my cut and the service. :) read more

I saw Emi for a cut and full balayage highlights and was thrilled with the result! Emi gave me the perfect haircut for the style I wanted and the highlights were painted beautifully. She really took her time to make sure everything was perfect and I appreciate that so much! In addition, she did something no hairstylist had ever done before; Emi gave me extremely helpful suggestions for my hair that really work for me. She suggested that I part my hair differently in order to even out the amount of hair on the sides of my head and I have to say, it's kinda life changing in a weird way, haha. The full appointment took about 3 hours (cut, color, extra conditioning treatments, blowing out, video/photo-taking!). I walked out feeling like a new woman--not sure how to take in the new hair, but definitely really happy about it :) Now that it's been almost 3 weeks since my appointment, I have really grown to LOVE my new hair and the work Mishi did. I've gotten a lot of great compliments about how natural the highlights look (yay balayage!) and how the highlighting has brightened up my face. Although expensive, I felt the $$$ (nearly $400) was well-worth my first-timer's trust and ease that I felt going into and leaving my appointment...and now, my complete satisfaction with my color! I'm glad I went to Mishi! (I just don't know if I can afford/justify keeping up the expensive habit here...) Bottom line: Mishi is fabulous and her passion for the art is apparent. I got my hair RE-Ombre'd!! Didn't think I could love it more than the first time but I DO!! This time we went extra Ombre! Low lights on top and lighter at the bottom. Mishi was super careful with the bleach she used which I totally appreciated and it totally shows cause it's lighter but not fried!! I always get compliments from people and I love it, especially having such a unique hair style that not too many people do. And let me tell you, it's hard to find someone that is amazing at both color and cut, but Mishi is one of those hard to find stylists, for suuure! And I'm a paranoid freak when it comes to getting my hair cut because I love it as long as possible and I like that Mishi cuts ONLY what she has to! No surprises but an awesome haircut to compliment the awesome new Ombre highlights! If your hair has never been MORPHED...do your hair a FAVOR and go visit Mishi...she will hook you UP!!!! read more

I have to say that i was very hesitant to pay over $100 for a haircut, considering the $75 i was paying at previous salons already seemed like a lot. However, that's where my hesitation ended. Although, i did end up having to wait almost 30min past my original appointment time, once I met Mishi and explained how dissatisfied i was with a previous cut and color from another expensive salon, she went right to work on me. I showed her photos of the kind of layers i wanted and asked her if she could do anything to hide the extreme brassiness of my lightened ends, to which she said she could apply a darker brown toner. After about 45min or so i was delighted by just how different my hair looked and how beautifully the layers and bangs were cut, neither looking choppy, stringy or flat. There was the perfect amount of layers and volume. My color unfortunately, could not be salvaged but at least she brought me back to my dark brunette so I didn't have to attend an important event embarrassed by my hair. Although, Mishi is expensive, she was able to correct a bad haircut and color effortlessly, and even suggested i could see her other assistant and sister, Emmi, who she personally trained for several years in order to help maintain my cut but at a more affordable rate for me. I'm looking forward to seeing what her assistant does with my baylayage next month but wouldn't hesitate to recommend Mishi for those who may either need to be saved from a bad haircut or for those who are willing to splurge on the very best! read more

I absolutely love Mishi because she has made me love my curly hair! She does a fantastic job at cutting/styling and an equally amazing job with color. Mishi has been cutting my hair for 10 years. Curly hair requires real expertise and Mishi has it. For the past few years she has also done my color to hide grey. I have finally found my SF hair salon! Thanks Tee for a solid cut. She cleaned up my layers and gave me an update to my style that I love. Dry haircut? Wow - first time I ever had that done. What kind of mad styling skills does this woman have!? Fabulous shampoo? Words cannot describe the absolute treat of a shampoo Tee gave - complete with a scalp massage that nearly put me to sleep! Who wouldn't love a stylist who can make you look beautiful while explaining the scientific reasons why? Mishi is amazingly gifted and always stretching herself. I've been seeing Mishi for five years and she's been able to match hair styles and colors to my every phase and fancy. No wonder she won hair and makeover contests, earning those trips to New York. But Mishi also appeals to my geeky side, explaining hair thickness and growing angles. And I love that she thinks about how hair will grow out. Instead of pushing color every visit, she works with my needs and can even do special coloring so I don't have to color again for months. And time in MIshi's chair is a joy. I love Mishi. I come and see her every so often to bring some new vitality to my hair. My first time with her, I decided to chop my hair to become very short - it takes a lot of trust to do so with a new hair stylist. But I've gone back to her to get a bayalange and now to grow my hair out again. I will admit she does try to sell you items for your hair like shampoo and other items, but for the most part, she doesn't force them on you. Overall, Mishi is great and really knows hair!
