I love this place! The staff was so kind, and while it was BUSY yesterday, people move in and out at a steady clip so we had no problem finding a tee to get set up on. Everything is really well maintained and there's ZERO pretentious vibes, which I really appreciated as a beginner. You don't have to wear a fancy outfit, sneakers are perfectly fine, and there's golfers of all levels and abilities. Really nice! They also offer classes, and I think we're going to take one of their group offerings over the summer. We went with a large bucket to split for $16, and got in about 40 minutes of golf fun. I think the prices are pretty reasonable and I appreciate the large parking lot. A lot of sales inside if you're looking for any kind of gear! Wearables, carts, clubs, AND they do club fittings. The shop itself is a little old school and run down, but so is golf, so it is on brand. I never thought I would find myself interested in golf (my parents are both big golfers) but I actually find myself really enjoying it. I am looking forward to continuing my golf journey and many more trips to Big Oaks in the future!

Let me…read moreexplain...Southern Meadows is a tiny 9 hole golf course sitting on a few acres of land off Rt 15 in Rush (between Henrietta and Avon). The course is completely open with a few small bushes and tiny trees planted here and there. They have also jammed in a small driving range, putting green, and clubhouse. There are just as many par 3s here as par 4s and nearly every hole is the same boring straight shot with no obstacles or hills. I love this place because I cant stand driving ranges, it's just too static for me and I like walking around and changing it up on every shot. I like that for $10 (the price of many driving ranges) I can come here with an hour or two to spare and practice with a quick 9 holes. If you come here with that mindset you'll love it. If you come here looking for a proper round of golf you'll hate this hole in the wall.

I currently mix up private lessons with one hour group clinic sessions. She works on two or three things a session so it's not information overload, like I have experienced with some other instructors. Sometimes I pop by the Dome to hit a bucket of balls, and she's always quick to give me a hint or a tip, even when I'm not taking a lesson.

BUT even more to say about this particular location (GolfTec Whitby) because of who is leading it, head instructor, Steve Rodriguez. Let's put to the side for a moment that he's obviously a pro and a guy that still plays the game competitively (which isn't always the case with teaching pros). That's not the magic. Steve is patient & encouraging, etc... good, but not magic. The #1 thing this guy does that makes GolfTec Whitby great is from the moment you meet, he puts you in a non-judgement zone so you can learn faster. Easier said than done because many of us judge ourselves. It doesn't matter your level, your good or bad shots, he's encouraging. He knows when to pull back on instruction and not put too much into your heard AND he genuinely gets excited when you really hit it; "Hello!!!" he can be heard saying... apparently he can talk to a golf ball, tell mine to stay out of the water. To say he helped me improve my swing and overall game significantly is an understatement. No... I'm not going on tour, but I hated the game I loved at times (sounds like some people's marriages). We started with a plan I didn't stick to - I didn't commit to the process. He literally pulled me aside and said, "Look, trust me on this. Don't worry about distance, don't worry about spin, I just want you to stop gripping the club so tightly. I don't want you just coming here going through the motions. If you need to take some time off, do so. But work with me here". In one lesson he even had me turn off tracer path because I kept looking at how far (well not far) the ball went. That's wisdom. That's the intangible. Fast forward the 2.5 years we've been together and the results speak for themselves; I'd brag how my 8 iron now carries ~154 and goes 162 and I take a 6 iron to carry 174 and roll 190 ...but I'd have to tell you how my 8 iron used carry 120 and I would (sorry for what's coming) shank the ball. Shank ... ugh ... the stuff that would make me want to quit more than ever. It's so rare now, but if it happens, I'm like, I know why, and I know what's wrong. But here's the other thing. At least for me, golf has its ups and downs. And there are times where I literally called him up and was done with golf, and other times where I call him up excited by the round in the 70s I shot! (Relax it's from 5600 yards with my 87 year old Dad.) So I guess he's kind of like a therapist ... lol ... more the point is that he cares. He's not there to sell you what you don't need and ring every dime that us golf-addicts are willing to pay; he is there so you can enjoy the game more, go out and do what golf should really be about - having fun. Here's the deal, technology and facilities can separate the probables from the possibles when it comes to choosing a place to invest your dollars trying to learn this damn hard sport... but the true calibre of instruction rests in the hands of the people entrusted to teach it. With GolfTec Whitby and Steve R ... you're in incredible hands. Rob, the other pro, is always so courteous and never sees you without asking how you're doing. When you're there practicing (which is an essential part of my package with the camera reviews), even though he's not my coach, I can ask him a question and he's there to help, not because it's his job per se, because he wants too. Overall, I would highly recommend GolfTec Whitby, and Steve Rodriguez as an amazing instructor for anyone looking to improve their golf game. Note: Now that you read this review... understand I don't often give reviews. Why? I have a social brand in the work I do (professional speaker & author & Fortune 100 VP) and some of my 'hobby' stuff has showed up on SQAIRZ golf and Alphard golf (makers of the Club Booster e-cart) despite not being an amazing golfer. Also didn't tried the food but the place smelled amazing and everything from the menu was reasonably priced. We only saw the bar menu which included mozarella sticks, wraps, among other finger foods. We were trying to go to the range but it's not opened yet so we decided to try their simulator. It was so much fun! Installations were new and very clean. Went to my nephew and his bride's wedding last night and I had no expectations. I've played the…read moregolf course before and knew the venue. The location is phenomenal. It's a great view. We were set up in a large tent adjacent to the restaurant/party house/club house. The main bar was closed (been there before, it's nice). The food was served family style. Each dish was fantastic. More than enough to feed this hungry group. Bartenders were attentive and prompt. What really impressed me were the servers/bussers. They really hustled. As a former restaurant worker and frequent diner, I appreciate staff grinding it out. I want to give a high five. They had a challenge with a storm that come in but pivoted well. I hope that they see this and can know that their efforts were noticed. Thank you so much and I do know that the groom/bride were very happy.

A lot of the holes were pretty straight on and weren't too difficult, although the sport along is very complex lol. The Genesee Valley Golf Course has a north course as well as a south course. We played the north course, front 9 and then the back 9. They offer karts as I'm sure most places do. They have a driving range as well where I was able to get a few practice shots in and get a feel for the club. The staff was very accommodating and informative. Inside they have a little shop where you can purchase merchandise and use the washroom if needed. Overall I had a blast, the scenery was great with the changing of the leaves and the freshly dew grass lol. Would definitely enjoy another round of golf!
