The first impression on entering the 1st floor Morilles dining area above the iconic Yellow House pub is one of tired and faded glory. Old, yet elegant, fixtures and fittings wouldn't be out of place in an Edwardian drawing room. That said, the service was friendly and attentive and the place was buzzing on a Wednesday night so they're doing something right. In keeping with the old fashioned vibe I ordered a very 1970s paté starter which, whilst clearly commercially produced, was tasty enough. My main was monkfish with a spicy chickpea side and a couple (literally) of clams. It was ok. Not memorable in any way. As I write this the day after, I'm struggling to recall if it was indeed chickpeas on the side. Unusually, they had a choice of French or home-cut fries. I went for the former which were excellent. My companion chose a cheesy starter which looked vile but she was happy with it. I could only think of those nasty fondant dipping things we all had along with our 'hostess' trollies back in 1976. She also had fish - sea bass - for main which, again, was declared to be excellent. I'll take her word for it. The wine was a very good house Chardonnay so the bank remained definitely unbroken on this occasion. Nice enough experience although badly in need of a refresh. read more
