I checked out Mooshoes after attending an event at Orchard Grocer next door. I have wanted to visit the store for a long time so I am sad to say that I was not very pleased with what they had to offer. I noticed instantly that a lot of their shoes were on the narrow side which left me with no choice of shoes. I visited their website and saw that some brands didn't carry larger shoe sizes as well. I ended up talking myself out of a bag that I was interested in as, I have been trying to find vegan shoes for a while now and did not want to buy something I was not in need of. Another thing is that all their products seem to be pretty pricey. I would hope that they are able to in the future offer more affordable products. I heard so many comments such as "even with 15% off, I would have save up 3 checks" (an exaggeration probably, but who knows), "$150 it's not even leather", "15% off what does that cover...tax!?" and so on. read more

Before visiting Mooshoes NY, I had visited Mooshoes LA once before. Actually, it was not long after the LA store opened and it seemed a little underwhelming. There wasn't a ton of product and the store was a bit out of the way, as things in LA so often are (without constant means to a car). The NY store, however, does a lot with its space and is super conveniently located in the Lower East Side. Not only that it, its adjacent to Orchard Grocer (more on that later). If you're looking for vegan shoes, Mooshoes really makes the process a lot easier than the alternative experience online. Sure, most stores have pretty good return policies now, but ultimately, you really want to see, feel, and try on a pair of shoes before you buy it. Mooshoes enables you to do all of this to several brands of Men's and Women's shoes. I was excited to see brands like Brave New Gentlemen, which again, I had previously only been able to see in photos online. Plus, Mooshoes has a small selection of high quality vegan bags (Matt and Nat, for the win), belts, and wallets. They even have some shirts, if you really want to wear your vegan pride front and center. But perhaps one of the best (or, two of the best) things about the store are a couple of store cats chilling near the register. One is a tabby named Georgina and the other a black and white cat named Marlowe. They were super sweet and friendly, and of course, made me want to hang out in the store even longer. And yes, not only is Mooshoes adjacent to Orchard Grocer, they have a direct door on the inside to their counter! So, if you need to both outfit yourself and fill up your tummy, you've got both covered with this amazing combo. read more

I've been buying from MooShoes' online store for almost 10yrs and last week I finally made it into the store and it was heaven! The store is spacious and the selection of kicks for all types of occasions are endless. This is the store my online purchases are shipped from. And it's located in one my favorite parts of NY. I was greeted by a very sweet gal who offered help with anything I needed. Due to my large calves and wide feet I tried on many sizes and styles and she was glad to help each time. We even talked about the problem with buying vegie shoes in that it's never guaranteed to stretch and when I asked her about a certain material she was very honest and said she knew little about it. I admire that a lot. After digging through their awesome selection of boots, stilettos, flats, high tops, mary janes, etc. a little furry being ran passed me. I soon learned the store had three housecats all who were rescued from the streets. They're the cutest babies. Vegan or not, I recommend this store because: 1) cruelty-free 2) great selection 3) awesome staff 4) small business 5) great location! Does it matter what they sell? OK, so you must be wondering why I am now giving Mooshoes a four-star rating, considering what I had gone through to get my boots.... So here it goes. Shortly after my last review, the owner contacted me to personally apologize for my order getting so messed up, and offered to refund me half my order! AMAZING. I have never in my life been treated with such great feedback from an owner regarding a review. She mentioned they recently changed their website and they're still ironing out some kinks. It's really great to see that Mooshoes cares about what their customers say, and I believe that's what customer service is all about. It's nice to know that Yelping actually makes a difference. Wide Selection of Cruelty-Free Shoes I'm not usually susceptible to window-shopping, but whenever I get the MooShoes newsletter, I find myself on the site, adding shoes to my cart that I know I probably won't or shouldn't buy. They have such a great selection and good prices on dress shoes, athletic shoes and casual shoes. More than just the flipflops listed under the category of "vegetarian shoes" on other shoe sites, Moo Shoes really has quality, useful, smart-looking shoes. Good customer service -- if you ever have questions about a product, call them up and they'll talk to you -- I once wondered about some women's boots and a Moo Shoes rep went and measured the inside of the top of the boot and the length of the shaft so I could decide if it would fit over my cyclist's calves. read more

I love this store been going there for about 8 years now. The staff are super friendly and patient and allow you to take your time in making a decision with various shoes and sizes. They have good insight into their products and what materials were used and the process. Super helpful. They also have a super friendly orange cat who will come up right to you and let you pat them. This is a must visit store when you are veg shoe shopping in NYC. For a while, they only catered to high end, 3 figure priced shoes. However, they have recently recognized that there is competition, and they should have some of the cheaper shoes, too. While this may feel like a step back from the quality, I feel that it is a way to make veg shoes accessible to everyone. The displays are as lovely as ever, with wire-secured glass shelving to focus on the beautiful shoes. The concrete floor is hip and functional. The store layout allows you to walk around, taking a look at the shoes, bags, belts and clothing before making a decision. The large mirror in the front is helpful to allow you to have a full view of what the shoes look like with your attire. There are a few seating areas to try on your shoes, but I have never been in this store when those seating areas were filled to the point of your need to stand and wait for your chance to try on shoes. The folks here are helpful and very friendly. They also have none of the snobbery that some high end shops might have, which is always appreciated. If you want to wear your new shoes, just ask to do so as you leave the store. They'll hold onto the box for you and recycle it. You can also ask them to just take your shoes without the box. Cool. This store is in high demand though, from on-line and in-person purchases, that some of the hottest items will sell out of popular sizes very quickly. Be adamant about ordering and buying them quickly or be patient in waiting and hoping for restocking. They always have shoes on sale for the last few pairs of a shoe, but the sizes tend to be the ones that most people do not fit into (either rather small or rather large). I also love that they host community events, as they are an integral part of their community in NYC and for the animals. Awesome! read more

Vegan shoes, accessories and clothing with a wide selection. I've been to MooShoes several times over the years, mainly to buy sneakers and dress shoes. Overall, I've had pretty good experiences. Selection - They have a lot to choose from, but since I wear a larger shoe (12 or 13 in men's) there were some limitations for what I could actually get. Besides that, they had a bunch of belts and wallets to choose from as well as some clothing items. Prices - In my opinion, they're a bit steep, even factoring in the cruelty-free aspect. Most of the dress shoes are over $100. I also bought a belt for $30 and that was a cheap one. I have not bought any other accessories there given the prices. Quality - Overall it's pretty solid. I only had one pair of shoes that lasted me about two months before completely falling apart. Another pair of dress shoes started showing considerable wear after only a few months. Otherwise I've also had two pairs that both lasted me multiple years. The $30 belt I bought is pretty flimsy, but it's still wearable about 8 months later. Service - Hit and miss. I've bad some experiences where the staff seemed uninterested in giving me assistance. I've also had some very good experiences too, especially recently, so maybe things have gotten better. Other thoughts - Some items don't have prices listed and I think it would be helpful to mark them. I couldn't find the prices on the belts and had to ask two different times. Then I was told there are only two different prices for the men's belts. How hard would that be to make a sign or tag, or at least tell me in the first place? All in all, it's great to have a vegan shoe (and accessory) store with a variety of selections. The prices are Manhattan high, but worth it if you want some vegan hard-to-finds. read more

I was so excited to find out that there was a fully vegan shoe store in New York that I made a point to go out of my way to stop by. I've been vegetarian for a number of years and never buy leather goods so finding a good quality, stylish pair of shoes can be somewhat challenging. Checking labels is a pain and you can never be certain that all of the materials are truly vegan. Thankfully everything at Mooshoes has been pre-vetted. They have a great selection of footwear for both women and men that range from "extremely affordable" to "whoa that's pricy". I ended up picking out a pair of canvas flats, some platform ankle boots, and a belt. The boots were a bit of a splurge but they were super cute and comfortable. They've since become one of my absolute favourite pairs of shoes. The service here was very attentive and the two staff members I spoke with were both very knowledgeable about their products. I have been a long time supporter and customer of mooshoes pretty much since their inception. I'm a long time vegan and liked the idea of supporting a vegan owned business, and they had been problem free in the past. This past week I have had the worst experience with them. As with Rik R's review above, they were unwilling to provide a refund for shoes that literally tore apart before leaving the house. In addition their stock was very low and they were unable to find me any type of replacement. The clerk this morning (Jan 31st) was not very attentive, and not very interested in getting me into a pair of shoes. And not her fault, but I arrived 30 minutes before they opened, but instead of offering to let me wait in the store, she watched as I stood outside the store in the cold, then didn't mention it when I came in. Best of luck, but you've lost me as a customer for good. read more

After hearing about the horrors the leather industry inflict on the environment, I attempted to give vegan shoes a try. If you look online, there are a good amount of places where you can purchase vegan shoes. Mooshoes is reputed and well known to vegans everywhere. They also have the best looking collection of things. I was really excited to purchase a pair of Vegetarian Shoes Amber Boots from them. So I did ... received order confirmation, then waited for two weeks. No word. I emailed them, got a reply saying that they had sent me an email about being out of stock in my size and shipment was going to be delayed. I checked my inbox and spam folder. No such notification. Almost two months after the order, the boots finally shipped. No expedited shipment to apologize for the delay. In the two months I waited, I realized Mooshoes marked up the boots ten dollars more than Vegan Essentials. Yesterday I wore the boots out. Disastrous. The boots looked cute but didn't hold up. My feet normally don't secrete sap so when I found some sticky residue on my socks. I had to take 15 seconds to assess the situation. Sure enough, the thin insole had shifted and left me with glue socks. If I hadn't paid 159 bucks for these substandard shoes, maybe I wouldn't complain so much. However, now I feel like a dumbass. My vegan shoe shopping experience: so far, so not good. Vegan shoes have come a long way but shit, why is quality so poor? I really wish they didn't have a cat. I don't know why stores do this. A shop should be accessible to everyone. I'm so allergic and I can't spend more than a few minutes in the shop. I hate shopping, so I was somewhat annoyed that there were so many shoes on display. I much prefer a shoe store that has at most one vegan pair of shoes: it makes decisions much easier. Fortunately, Mooshoes provided a friendly sales person to point to the three best boots for ice and snow, and to the huge selection of sneakers. I chose a pair of boots via the "my mother says to pick the very best one and you are it!" rhyme. For the sneakers, I chose the ones that were most solidly black (since this was the first strategy that occurred to me). Five days later, I am pleased with my choices. You should take my evaluation with a grain of salt, however, because it may have occurred to you by now that I am not the most discerning shoe shopper on the planet. By the way, I have read other reviews that talk about cats around the store and cat hair on some of the clothing. I did not find cat hair on anything, and did not see cats (plural). I did, however, see cat (singular). This cat was humongous, and it occurred to me that perhaps it had eaten the other cats, reducing the total number of cats and cat hair to manageable levels. I tried to pet the cat, and it bit the air a few inches in front of my hand. I took it as a warning at the time, but as I type this now it occurs to me that perhaps the cat was just too lazy to follow through after having previously gorged itself so amazingly. read more

Shoes! I love shoes. And though I won't be a hypocrite and claim to buy all vegan all the time, I appreciate a store that focuses on 100% cruelty free items, allowing me to shop guilt free, and without sacrificing style. So my boyfriend and I just happened to come in here on a day when they were holding an adoption event for dogs and cats. Dogs! Cats! Everywhere! It's not a huge store, but still allowed plenty of space for about 8 spacious cages to be set up, displaying the cuddly friends in need of new homes. We spent the first half of our time there falling in love over and over with big fluffy cats and playful puppies, and kept saying over and over that it's a good thing we don't live in New York, or we would have come home with one of them! I think it's wonderful that Moo Shoes supports this sort of event and really epitomizes what it means to be an all-around animal friendly retail establishment. In addition to the animals, we were treated to a table of freshly baked vegan cupcakes, chocolates and other treats to snack on while we shopped. And shop we did! I somehow made it out of there without buying anything for myself, but that was probably because my boyfriend needed, like really, really NEEDED new shoes, and we focused on the task at hand. The staff was super helpful as he tried on several pairs, and once he made his selection, the very knowledgeable girl at the register chatted us up about other vegan businesses in the area to check out. Super helpful. Apparently, this is a new, bigger location and their inventory has expanded. Plenty of cute shoes for men and women to choose from, and surprisingly they don't all look like hippie shoes! In fact, there is a very nice selection of believable faux leather items, from shoes to wallets and bags. And there are some rad t-shirts emblazoned with vegan slogans for you to ooh and ahh over. It is extremely liberating to be able to walk through a store without having to check labels or research manufacturers' ethics. Mooshoes vends products that are fashioned out of cruelty-free materials--the way all stores should be. You will not find shoes or bags made out of animal parts. My review is mostly based on customer service. I have been a Vegan for about 9 months and so the other day I decided to buy my first ever vegan pair of boots :) I noticed that MooShoes in known for carrying very good quality vegan shoes so after work I headed to their store. I tried 2 pairs of boots and really liked one of them, they were too big on me so I asked for the smaller size. The lady went to see if they had them but they didn't so I asked her if they were going to be receiving any more of those boots in the future, she said that most likely no since they are last season's. I asked her if she knew of any online store where I could find them and she said that would be hard since they (as in MooShoes) manufacture those boots so if they don't have them no one else does. Big lie. I went online and saw that the boots are manufactured by a Portuguese company and that the boots can be easily found on a wide variety of websites (even Amazon.com) and at a lower price!. While I understand that you do not want people buying from sources other than yours; if you are not carrying the shoes anymore and simply can't make the sale why wouldn't you help someone? I will not be choosing another store because they carry the same product (even cheaper), I will be choosing another store simply because you no longer carry that product. Not going back. read more

So the only reason I'm giving Mooshoes three stars rather than two is that they have vegan shoes, wallets, bags, etc. I love that. HOWEVER, I trekked quite a ways the other evening to look for shoes there and made my sister (who is not as into vegan stuff as I am... meaning, she likes leather and she likes a designer label) come with me. We walked in and the two people in the store not only pretty much ignored us, but also started whispering and laughing. Even if they weren't laughing at us, the store is way too small for whispering, ya know? They never asked if we needed help and then they turned the lights out on me as if to say "we're closing soon" which would have been fine if they were closing in one minute, but they had about ten minutes left and I CLEARLY wasn't going to be spending a bunch of time there (the store is small and they could have just told me they were about to close and I would have said "I'm just seeing if you guys have strappy dress shoes that I could wear to a wedding!" and they could have said "oh, we don't" and I would have been out, y'all) So the service from my one experience gets a suck. I like the shoes and I like the two cats that were in there (though one of them was dirty as hell... poor thing). So that's my Mooshoe experience, sadly. read more

The first time I went here, I was in heaven and I think I walked out having spent about $400. But that quickly faded -- both pairs of heels I bought wore down after only a few days of walking (not good). The bag and t-shirts I bought have lasted quite well, but since *shoes* are what I really went there for, shouldn't they have lasted longer than, say, the ones I bought at Forever 21 the same weekend for a fraction of the price? I agree with previous posters about the cats. It wasn't so bad when I first visited, but on the last visit (July 2007), the t-shirts were covered in cat hair. This store is lovely and I love that they have nice vegan wallets and shoes, as well as 2 cute cats as store mascots (or perhaps they are the security guards since they seem to always be on the look out). Mooshoes is located in the Bermuda Triangle of Manhattan where there is the magic of incredible cruelty free shoes and bags (Mooshoes) along with a dazzling ethical boutique to outfit your nakedness (Kaight) and the most orgasmic vegan and gluten free bakery in town (Babycakes.) Seriously, it's in the perfect location for a day of indulgence and tree hugging. It makes me happy. :-) Now, on to the goodness that is Mooshoes. First off, the space itself is airy and bright, with well lit mirrors and a beautiful, easy to navigate layout. Second, there are the cats! Big, fluffy, friendly, cats laying in shoeboxes. (The staff are equally friendly and adorable, but I'm not comfortable snuggling them.....yet. ) Finally, the selection of well edited shoes, boots, bags, and accessories are simply awesome. They are constantly bringing in new inventory and offer great suggestions when prompted for advice. I really feel there is something for everyone at Mooshoes. In terms of price, I'm sure you can find better "deals" on certain items online but they are such a fabulous company to support and they provide truly excellent customer service so I'm happy to pay their reasonable prices. Let me start this review by stating a fact known to my entire family: I hate/loathe/try-and-avoid buying shoes. Specifically, I don't like to buy dress shoes. They're the necessary evil of the work attire (suit, tie, belt, shoes, you get the point), but that doesn't mean I enjoy shopping for them. That said, Moo Shoes is the only place I've found to have a large selection of dress shoes I can buy that are both durable and vegan. I was there in January with my old leather Skechers falling apart and found a great pair of brown lace-ups which were actually more comfortable than any shoe I'd worn previously. I walked out of the store with them the minute I completed the purchase, and I haven't looked back. They managed to make it through the icy Boston winter this year intact! While some reviewers have commented about the prices (these shoes were just over $100), when I'm having to shop for dress shoes in the $75-$80 range anyway at Macy's or Filene's, I'll gladly pay $30 more to support a great business like Moo Shoes and guarantee I'm getting quality vegan footwear. If shoes aren't what you are shopping for, they do have a great line of vegan accessories - belts, handbags, wallets, etc. I got a vegan wallet from db clay over the holidays made entirely from gaffer's tape. It's a bit of a novelty, yes, but the ability to have a nice-looking wallet (again, vinyl Sanrio wallets aren't great in the business environment) which isn't made from leather is wonderful. In theory, I love this store. I'm all for cruelty free fashion. I've been a long time browser of their website which has a HUGE selection of totally cute shoes and accessories, but I've always been a little hesitant to order online without having the luxury of free shipping/return shipping in case of fit/quality complaints. I was thrilled upon moving to NYC to discover that they had a storefront, however, I was disappointed to find that other reviewers were right about the very limited stock of styles and sizes. I observed another customer interaction that made it clear they took custom orders, which is sort of the perfect compromise between online selection and in-store convenience -- but this takes extra time, to be sure. And I overheard that they had forgotten to call the guy to tell him his order was ready. He seemed fine about it, but I was annoyed for him. read more

As a vegan, I've been shopping here (mostly online since I don't live in NYC anymore) for several years. There is a welcome, wide variety of shoes and prices to select from, and their bags are neat, too. I remember a time pre-MooShoes when you had to order from England or Australia, and pay mucho bucks for shipping, if you wanted a stylish, definitely-vegan shoe. It's really cool that MooShoes pioneered the vegetarian/alternatives to leather movement in America. MooShoes doesn't really advertise it, but they are big supporters of and donors to animal protection. Their animal adoption and vegan author booksigning events are really excellent, and one big reason I wish I still lived in the area. Also, I believe their policy is to sell only products made with fair human labor. I've noticed that some (many? most?) of their wallets and bags are handmade by independent crafters. Seriously cool, stylish vegan shoes and more. I guess I expected a slightly bigger selection, but I loved what I saw! I'm particularly fond of the boots they have, and I think the price is fine given the quality of the shoes (if you want cheap shoes that only last a few months, go to Payless). I also liked the purses and bags, although I thought they were a bit overpriced. They also have some great cook-books, and if you're sweet-heart has a sweet-tooth: there are chocolate-hearts for Valentine's day. read more
