This 17-acre historic site was once a thriving sugar plantation built in the 1830's out of coquina…read more Coquina is a unique sedimentary rock made almost completely of shells from invertebrates. The walls of the historic Florida fort Castillo de San Marcos in Saint Augustine are made entirely of coquina. It is also widely used to pave roads in the Caribbean and as a base for concrete in Florida homes. This natural product is soft when first quarried and usually left to dry several years to allow it to harden for building purposes. In truth, this place is a victory for the Seminole Indians. They raided it and chased off the overseer of the business just 5 years after its builders Henry Cruger & William dePeyster acquired the land and began sugar production. According to the on-site information plaque, the sugar mill slaves were responsible for helping the Indians stage their raid. I can't imagine the consequences those slaves faced for their rebellion once the United States army waged war against the Indians. The slaves work was dangerous. Aside from clearing land and attending to the sugar cane itself, they were also involved in the production. The Engine House consisted of a boiler, steam engine and cane crusher that extracted the juice of the sugar cane. The liquid was then heated in a series of large kettle bowls until it was thick, cooled to crystallize and then stored. The largest area of the ruins still visible, forming a foundation (but missing most walls) is the sugar storage facility. You can see remnants of the cane crushers gears as well as the various sizes of the metal kettle bowls, also known as a train. URBAN LEGEND has it that people in the late 1800's came across this land after many years had passed and believed it was a chapel or convent built by Christopher Columbus. The information plaques also seem to suggest the owner of the ruins at the time, Jeanette Connor, promoted the theory. Perhaps for tourism and financial gain or status. Also visible are remnants of the crusher and saw mill once located here. FINAL THOUGHTS Ruins are poetic to old history lovers like me who often get caught up imagining what life must have been like when the mill was in full use. Can you imagine being able to go back in time and observe places like this in operation? Of course being African-American I'd also need a cloak of invisibility or I might get put to work! But I'd like to observe just how they managed to keep their joy and faith in the midst of horrific conditions. No one knows what they will say to the Almighty Creator when they finally come face to face with him. Some don't even believe he exists. But I like to think I would request to be placed before an EPIC cosmic-sized big screen and watch just how He created the heavens, the earth and all its creatures, both known and extinct. I'd also like to see a complete recall of historic events and why man has done the things he's done, both great and atrocious. While to some this place was just an old sugar mill, to me it's a place where humans fought injustice, however successful or unsuccessful they may have been. 2016/54

He came to my camper, appeared intoxicated, and was beating on my door while angrily confronting me about a deck that I had no choice to build because the whole place floods and the owners refuse to address it. I told him to get away from me and specifically asked that management come speak with me so the issue could be handled through them instead. Rather than management addressing my concerns about his behavior, I was the one removed from the campground because I told the employee to "get the fuck away from me." I don't deny saying it. I absolutely did. But I said it while telling an employee who appeared drunk and was angrily beating on my door to leave me alone and get management. That's what bothers me most about the entire situation. Management had an opportunity to come speak with me, hear both sides, and address the behavior of their own employee. Instead, I was removed. I later learned that I was not the only camper who had experienced serious problems involving this employee. Since then, I have researched the situation further and found publicly available records that raised additional concerns for me. I'm not going to speculate about anyone's motives or claim that an arrest or charge is a conviction, but I strongly encourage prospective campers--especially families and long-term residents--to do their own research and make their own judgment. Eight months later, I'm writing this because I think future campers deserve to know what my experience was. If an employee can show up at a camper's door apparently intoxicated, beat on the door, initiate a confrontation, and management's response is to remove the camper for telling that employee to get away from them, that's a campground I cannot recommend.

If you're looking for a great outdoor party smack dab in the middle of Bike Week, this is it. The event has everything you're looking for, if this is your thing; bikers & biker babes, motorcycles, bikini contests, live music, motorcycle daredevil acts (Globe of Death), fire dancers, fire jugglers, high-wire acts, stilt walkers, wrestling, full liquor bars, ice cold beer and finally watching the burning bike burn. The party starts at 5pm and ends 12am the next morning. Tickets to get in are $10. There is plenty of parking available but know that Fast Lane Campground is just what it is, a campground, and their parking lot and event grounds is basically a big open grass lot, so if you are disabled or have a special need this might be difficult event to navigate on your own, be sure to bring a buddy. One of the most memorable parts of the event is viewing all of the messages written on the wooden sculpture before it is burned. Nancy and I write our own messages of love to the ones that we have lost and dearly miss. If you want to take advantage of this part of the event I recommend arriving before dark because staff fence off the sculpture 45-min to an hour before burning begins. If you are planning on spending most of the day at the event, I recommend bringing a collapsible chair and claiming a spot close to the fence posts surrounding the burning bike so you can get the best view. There are plenty of vendors on site selling food, snacks, dessert, non-alcoholic drinks, alcoholic drinks, cigars, other paraphernalia, merchandise, biker gear, custom knives and so much more, you basically have everything you need if you didn't bring it with you. This year, I have to say they burned the sculpture much faster than previous years. It was a shame that it burned so quick. I actually wish they would start burning earlier but let it burn longer like previous years because as soon as the bike burned, everyone started leaving. This time around, they started burning the bike at 9:50pm and the rider and most of the bike was completely burned by 10:15pm. I think they used too much fuel too quick. I guess if you just want to get it over with that's the way to do it but I think they could have easily spread the burning out over the course of an hour or more. All-in-all, this is an awesome event that is held annually during Bike Week. If you have never gone, I highly recommend marking your calendar now for next year. I don't know the exact day of Burning Bike but I know that Bike Week is scheduled for February 27th through March 8th, 2026. Hope to see you there!

Life is going along as usual and then this pandemic hits. As a travel nurse, I was asked to leave…read moremy home in the port orange area to go out and help a hospital I had previously worked with in California for 6 weeks and so off I went. The problem.... what do I do when I return to help protect my high risk family members from a potentially life threatening illness? One that I have been exposed to in caring for these patients. An illness that sometimes has no symptoms for weeks at a time. My troubles were laid to rest after an inquiry and short conversation with Micheline Fortier, the resort manager, at Daytona Beach RV Resort regarding the possibility of a short term rental to quarantine. Micheline and the staff at the resort were incredibly generous and informed me that they would have a cabin set up and ready for me upon my return and that they were refusing to take payment for my 2 week stay as a thank you. I was blown away! Thee staff at the resort were extremely helpful and accomadating as my travel schedule changed several times due to fluctuations in the caseload out west. I was expecting a small cabin with bare necessities upon my arrival but was again blown away with the accommodations! It was one of about 20 in a group of beautiful, brand new, modular home type cabins. The unit was stocked with all essential linens, plate ware, furniture, and appliances. I spent most evenings relaxing on the fan cooled, furnished front porch. The park was quiet. Clean and the other guests were all friendly and fun. What I thought was going to be a drudging 2 week quarantine turned out to be a peaceful staycation retreat and I was really sorry to let the cabin go at the end of my stay. I will definitely be recommending the accommodations here to friends, family, and other traveling professionals in the future. And I wouldnt at all be surprised if I stay here for a few days in the future to hideout from life and just unwind. Thank you so much for this wonderful gift and retreat by the
