Super long wait for super average drinks! The vibe was pretty nice and loved the views from the rooftop (that is what the 3 stars are for).

Very nice vibe here with 2 rooftop areas and an indoor bat area. The place is very lively with lounge furniture and music. Perfect for any season since they offer the indoor bar. When you enter the Elyton hotel there is only one elevator that takes you to the rooftop (r) and make sure that you follow the capacity of 6 people because we got stuck in the elevator over the weekend for having more! (They got us out in under 30 minutes thankfully) but if it happens to you the covers on the top of the elevator do come off if you need air! Other than this we all enjoyed our night! I'd say the pizza was lacking a lot (2/5)... it needed saltiness and texture. It was almost like a tasteless sauce with a glob of cheese on it. Will be back again and maybe I will try other dishes if I'm hungry but probably not. read more

Okay, okay, I have also hung out with my friends here. There is a REALLY beautiful view at the top. I love the concept, but the vibe is "young married accountants taking rooftop couple pictures with their friends." ...I have also taken pictures with my friends up here. Maybe what I'm saying is that I usually feel uncomfortable and out of place at Moon Shine. Disappointing, because I live for good views! Moonshine was a pleasant surprise. The bar is a rooftop bar located on the top of the Elyton Hotel (17th floor I believe). When you enter the lobby of the hotel, there is a designated elevator for the rooftop bar. The bar has indoor and outdoor seating. Outdoor seating overlooks downtown Birmingham and gives you an opportunity to appreciate Birmingham's skyline (especially at night). Outdoor seating is on both sides of the bar (however I did not see other side for other seating until I was leaving)....so be sure to look at both sides to determine where you would like to sit especially if one area is crowded. They have a nice selection of mixed drinks and they serve appetizers or small plates. This is a nice bar to start or to end your night. read more

The pizzas were very undercooked, dried and needed more love I guess. While the food description sounded amazing it was not satisfying. Also ordered the meatballs - nothing to rave about. A great, new addition for skyline views of Birmingham. This rooftop bar in the Elyton Hotel is trendy and modern, with two different viewing areas of the city. The elevator ride going up is an experience-just look upward and you'll understand! Very cool view going up the building and seeing the elevator shaft. The main bar is located just inside, and there is ample seating outside-making it spacious. The drink and food menu is rather pricey, but that is to be expected at such a nice place and hotel. The service is ok-took a little work to get their attention for my order. If anything, go here for a nice view with friends when the weather is cooler in the Fall or Spring. You won't be disappointed with that. read more

Moonshine has a great view, but it definitely does not take advantage of it like it could. There is really only one side of the bar where the view is nice, so that can get crowded. The service is good and my drink was fine, but I can't say it beat out any of the other establishments in the area. I did really love being there on a night when they had a live musician. Bottom line: it's a great place to take out of town friends, but I think the Roof at Redmont is still a better rooftop bar. I can't say it has much to offer that would bring us back over somewhere else. read more

Come up to the rooftop bar at the Elyton Hotel with beautiful people all around you, stunning views of the Magic City at night, and a new perspective of the blimp mooring tower. This is my second time here at Moonshine. It is located at the roof of a historic hotel. I wasn't too impressed the first time and tonight finalizes my experience here isn't quite all that great. When I walked in, an event was taking place. A waiter reassured me that my boyfriend and I could seat ourselves and order. The space was essentially for everyone. 20 minutes later, no one asked us for our drink order or if we wanted to eat. My boyfriend went inside and ordered our drinks as well as a pizza for himself. The pizza as you can see is burnt and was delivered us to us by "kids" 20 minutes after I went to check on it. At that time, the pizza was ready, so it was cold when it arrived. My wine was good, you can't go wrong with wine... his drink was terrible! It tasted like watered down tea with whiskey. Terrible service and bad food/drinks. Don't waste your time. read more

OMG LOVE THIS PLACE! We got there around 5:30 and there wasn't a line for the elevator. We found a comfy couch outside and after about five minutes a waitress got our drink order. We started with the Boosie Fosho drink (first on their menu). It was delicious! The only downside was how slow it took for the waitress to come back. I know it's new so they were backed up, but perhaps hiring more staff would be good. Once she did come back we tried the Daily Pie which was conecuh sausage, kale, mushrooms, and Parmesan and was easily one of my new favorite pizzas in B'ham. We tried another drink (second one listed don't remember the name) and our waitress apologized for the time it took to get the drinks. Honestly the atmosphere is so nice and relaxing we enjoyed our visit. We left around 9pm and the line for the elevators was crazy. Def get there early! We will be back! read more

Came to moonshine this past Sunday to check it out and see what the fuss was about. Another nice addition to the city of Birmingham and the cocktail drink scene. Definitely a swanky place to come with friends or loved ones and hang out. They offer a limited amount of craft cocktails and some small bar bites as well. Aesthetically the place looks really good. Several seating areas for groups to hang and the overlook of the city is this place's bright spot. Great great view will definitely come back I think it will be a huge hit in the fall. read more

This is a great location atop The Elyton Hotel (old converted Bank building). The decor, views and ambience are killer. Staff were friendly. Small wine, food and cocktail list but adequate. I knocked off a star because the crust on my smoked salmon pizza was so tough I couldn't eat it. Luckily I wasn't that hungry. So far so good for this spot that just opened up on the roof of the Elyton Hotel. Stopped in for a bit this evening and had a few drinks and one of thier pizzas. Food was good, drinks were great. Simple concept, executed fairly well. I know they're new, and it may take some time to work out some minor kinks. The bartenders seemed a little overwhelmed in spite of it not being particularly busy, but they still managed to pour great drinks. The views from the roof are really good, and the pizza was well made with what seemed to be quality ingredients. The waitress who came to the tables was friendly and did a great job. The building still needs a bit of work. Like, unintentionally exposed ductwork in the bathroom, loose tiles on the inside bar, just some small things that I noticed that could have been tightened up a bit. I'm sure I'll be back and end up updating this review. My instincts say 5 stars, but the details...they're so important. I think because they're new, that they'll get into a groove and that this should end up becoming a great new place in the city. Go and see for yourself. read more

Went with a group with high expectations. The deck was smaller than expected, but the views were lovely.They appeared understaffed. Our waitress was extremely busy and it took quite a while to get our drinks.They were busy but not packed, there was still seating available. She was very nice and helpful, but got all but one of our party's checks incorrect. The menu is extremely limited, so don't go hungry. This is more of a relax/ chill/ listen to live music place. The small plates they did have were good. We had a veggie pie, a swine pie, and crab claws. Our drinks included Bougie and Underwood Rose Sparkling. I would recommend them all. We were excited to try the Irish coffee cake, but they were out. We tried the key lime pie instead. We were shocked to say the least about the size of the slice. It may have been two, maybe three small bites. Go for drinks, atmosphere and the view, and maybe a snack. Don't expect to be wowed. read more

Dropped by this past Saturday to check out this new gem we have in our city!! This rooftop lounge is on the 17th floor of the new Elyton hotel downtown. Since it opened just the Friday before, there was a line to go up. They were letting people up the elevators as people got off and the line moved quickly. This place was soo city chic y'all! There's indoor and outdoor space. The seating varies from bar stools to couch set ups perfect for conversation settings with a group. The outdoor views of Birmingham were so pretty! This would be a perfect date night spot. Or first stop for a night out. The menu features...moon shine and local craft beer. There's also small plates that are seasonal and are great pre-dinner snacks! I can't wait to come back once the newness has died down! read more

Came here with a group of coworkers after work during the week for some drinks. Its awesome that Birmingham now has a rooftop bar and the hotel below is a great addition to the downtown area. The bar and outdoor area was busy, but not packed so we were able to find a spot outside. The service was slow to start, but once we got our initial drink order in the service was attentive. The drink menu was ok, not huge but had a few interesting cocktail options. We didn't get any food, but the food menu looked very small (about 5 options). Not sure if there is a larger menu, but I would assume the main point of Moon Shine is drinks on a rooftop. I will definitely come back next time I am in Birmingham and would recommend Moon Shine to anyone looking for a great spot for a drink or two. read more

Pathetic. Drinks (martinis) were awful, tiny, and super expensive. Service was pathetic. Actually rude. Food;.there were 4 FOUR items on the menu... crab claws....were just that...CLAWS sans meat. It was as if someone else got my dish, ate the meat and discarded the claws and we got the discards? Pizza was good. We were never asked if we needed anything, or if the food or drinks were good. For a month old venue, you would expect the Management to be engaging or watching. With such a nice rooftop environment, it's s shame service, drinks, and food don't measure up. Great views of Downtown Birmingham! At 92 degrees, it was tolerable outside with a good breeze on the 17th floor. They have a happy hour from 2-7, but had to ask for it. The pizza oven is flaming and Blaze cooks the pizza and flat breads. Bar tender says the place gets busy around 9:30, but closes around 11??? Small elevator to get there, really nice furniture, and complimentary lighting to set the mood. As rooftop bars go, this one is nice! read more

Overall, this was a sub-par experience. For one, the indoor area smelled of strong bleach, and the ambiance was bland. The outside rooftop area looked nice, and the views of BHM were pretty, but it was all marred by the terrible music selection blasting through a crackling blown speaker. Could it get any worse? Finished off our visit with an undercooked pizza with charred black crust and a wedge salad that was served with what tasted like watered down ranch dressing. This has to be one of the worst experiences I have ever had at a bar. Myself and five friends went for a 5:00pm drink on a Thursday night to check out this new bar. I ordered a signature cocktail off of their menu, as did 3 other people in our group. The drinks were so gross every single one of us had to send them back to be remade. My drink was supposed to have rum, rosé, and lime juice. The first drink tasted like pure lime juice to the point I couldn't drink it. After taking 15 minutes to get anyone's attention to have the drink remade, I receive a second drink which tasted like sugar and water. Mind you, my drink should have had ROSÉ, RUM, AND LIME JUICE. No simple syrup. This time the wait was so long another person from our group had to go inside and tell them just forget the mixed drink and pour a sparkling rosé. The time is now 5:45pm, and I have not even had one drink. The bar was NOT that busy at all, but the service was surely lacking. There was only us and one other group of people on the patio. By the time I got my drink, I had to chug it and leave as I only had an hour before I had somewhere else to be. I was charged for the mixed drink, and not one time did anyone come and introduce themselves as a manager and offer to comp anyone's drink. $11 plus tip for an hour of my wasted time and a glass of sparkling rosé. I will never go back here again, and I've already warned several other friends not to waste their time either. One member of our group ordered the tuna dip, and it was not good either. The cup holding the dip had so much olive oil in it, you couldn't scoop out the "dip" with the bread provided. It also had hardly any flavor. Yuck. The other appetizer ordered was a pizza with sausage which tasted pretty good. I would say that was the only good thing I had the entire time we were there. If a bar has $11 cocktails, $14 appetizers, and $7 beers I expect the food and drinks to be good. I also would expect the service to be really good. I found that this place is a waste of time and money. ALSO: I checked my bank account, and I have a $25 charge from Moon Shine that after I had to go out of my way to call them I find out is a "hold fee" just for ordering there. At no point did our server mention this fee, and there was no posted sign stating that information. Although no one else in my group was charged any type of holding fee, AND the person who spent the most money didn't even get a detailed receipt and thinks she was overcharged as well. She lives in France, so she won't have the chance to even go back there to get it straightened out. I hope they're better on the phone than they are in person. read more

After spending nearly $200 at the hotel restaurant, I wanted to enjoy the remainder of my night at the rooftop bar. After waiting in front of the lobby elevator for just over two hours, I ended up leaving. The hotel management said they had a party of 50 coming in and they were running late. Despite that only 15 of those people finally showed up, the fire code allows 123 people. That leaves 73 open spots for other guests. Interestingly, we had friends on the rooftop that sent pictures to us, showing far less than 73. We would have left much sooner, but we were continually told "Just 15 more minutes". The management team orchestrating this chaos were disorganized, inconsiderate, and dismissive. In sum, after spending $200 at dinner, I spent two hours standing in front of an elevator and being told "shouldn't be more than 15 minutes". Unless your idea of a good time is standing in front of an elevator for two hours, go somewhere else. read more

Really cute bar! I've been wanting to go here for what seems like ages although it just opened. I came once before to wait in line but the wait was too long for our party of 11 so we ended up somewhere else. My party of 4 got up there within 10 minutes so that was really nice. It was really crowded. The bar seemed too small to serve everyone there. I know you could be seated and be waited on but it seemed hard to know what was the best thing to do. I waited 20 minutes to order and then get my drinks. Once it reaches maximum capacity, they begin to limit how many people can take the elevator up to the bar. So waiting that long before max capacity was a bit disappointing. When we got our drinks, we walked around to both sides of the open area where you can see different views of Birmingham. Lovely scenery. I'm going to try to come back before 7pm to enjoy it without the crowds. So exciting to see birmingham open newer and neat places! read more

This bar on the roof of the Elyton Hotel offers best combination of service and atmosphere. As far as drinks go, panicked on my first round and accidentally ordered a Moscow mule which turned out to be great. Then for my second round the bar manager, Noah, recommended the Second Self Thai Wheat which is now one of my favorite beers of all time. So props for that. Also, this rooftop bar offers perhaps the best view in the city of the three or four tall buildings that we have downtown, so props on that too. read more

Sorry to say but I went here last weekend and the service was horrible. We basically had to beg the server to attend to us. I can't even recall if she gave us her name which I usually make sure to use and remember. The server who eventually took over for her was great and friendly but come to find out she didn't even work there but was helping a friend out that night. The food was mediocre which was sad because in the past I have enjoyed it. Probably will not be making another trip there anytime soon. Since there is a limit on the number of people allowed in overcrowding is not an excuse. Sorry but way too disappointed to spend my money there until things get better read more
